Vlad’s Contract Comments Spark Backlash + McKenna Shines for Leafs ft. Rob Longley

Today on Off the Roster, Dan Riccio and Lindsay Dunn break down a massive day in Toronto sports as the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2026 playoff push officially comes to an end and the Toronto Maple Leafs wrap up their preseason with a pair of wins over the Ottawa Senators. Rob Longley joins the show to dissect where it all went wrong for the Blue Jays, what their disappointing finish means heading into the offseason, and the biggest story surrounding the team: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s comments about his contract and his difficult 2026 season. After saying players get paid for what they’ve already accomplished rather than what they’re going to do, Vlad has faced backlash from Blue Jays fans, Toronto media and around Major League Baseball. Dan, Lindsay and Rob discuss the comments, the criticism, Guerrero’s performance this season, his role in Toronto falling short of the postseason and what the Blue Jays need from their franchise star going forward. Then, attention turns to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who closed out the preseason with two victories over the Ottawa Senators. The crew breaks down Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, Sergei Bobrovsky, Matthew Knies, Jim Hiller’s comments on Knies’ preseason and what the Leafs have shown heading into the 2026-27 NHL season. Most importantly, they dive into an outstanding final preseason performance from Gavin McKenna, his chemistry alongside Tavares and Nylander, his growing confidence and what his play could mean for Toronto’s lineup this season. With the Blue Jays’ postseason hopes officially over and the Maple Leafs preparing for opening night, Off the Roster has you covered on the biggest stories in Toronto sports.
