00:01:14.207 --> 00:01:15.188
Let's dive in.
00:01:15.950 --> 00:01:17.459
Welcome back to MilesFromHerView.
00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:19.150
I am Kat, your host.
00:01:19.219 --> 00:01:20.629
If you are new here, welcome.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:22.670
I am so happy that you are joining.
00:01:23.049 --> 00:01:26.040
If you have been a longtime listener, welcome back.
00:01:26.790 --> 00:01:32.150
Today, we're really gonna go into what it means to lock in with working out.
00:01:32.750 --> 00:01:39.090
I work with clients, and I am also in this category where I'm the one that holds the calendar together.
00:01:39.400 --> 00:01:49.829
I am the person who makes sure that everybody else has their needs met in my house, who- that they get to where they need to go, that they are set up for success.
00:01:50.329 --> 00:01:53.129
But then where do you fall in?
00:01:53.939 --> 00:02:18.340
It is often that I hear from women that by the time that they're done typing the work email with one hand and packing the lunches with the other, every single appointment, every practice, and you're the person who shares that information with everyone, and the person who is reminding each person as they walk out the door e- to ensure that they have their practice equipment, their instrument, their...
00:02:18.430 --> 00:02:22.800
anything that they need, you're exhausted by the time it gets to you.
00:02:23.590 --> 00:02:27.840
So the thing about locking in isn't about cramming more into your day.
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:31.030
It's about deciding you deserve to be on your own list.
00:02:31.780 --> 00:02:42.490
And it's actually making a plan for your own wellbeing instead of hoping you get the time, the energy, the motivation, all of those things.
00:02:42.539 --> 00:02:45.340
Because honestly, no one is gonna give you the time.
00:02:45.409 --> 00:02:55.300
You have to claim it for yourself if you've started a workout, maybe it was this week, maybe in the past, and life pulled you away before you finished, it's not a loss.
00:02:56.229 --> 00:02:57.129
Say it out loud.
00:02:58.060 --> 00:02:59.599
Those workouts were not a loss.
00:02:59.639 --> 00:03:07.360
They are not a loss, and they never will be, because it will not be the first time that life is gonna interrupt you and you're going to leave a workout unfinished.
00:03:07.449 --> 00:03:09.340
I still leave workouts unfinished.
00:03:09.629 --> 00:03:17.250
I have clients that leave workouts unfinished, and we will talk about that more and how to handle that.
00:03:17.750 --> 00:03:24.509
So that is one of the things I hear from women a lot is they want to be able to finish their workouts, and they want...
00:03:24.520 --> 00:03:30.939
They have this vision of themselves that they will get to a point where a workout will never be interrupted.
00:03:31.180 --> 00:03:35.580
They will get to a point where they will always be doing workouts flawlessly.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:39.020
We need to change that mindset.
00:03:39.050 --> 00:03:43.979
Instead of grading yourself on that workout that you didn't finish, look at what you did.
00:03:44.009 --> 00:03:57.680
If you got two lifts in before an important work call, a child needed something, you needed to get out the door, you took a walk and then a pop-up meeting happened, so you had to cut that short, it all counts.
00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:05.719
So we need to stop measuring ourself by some perfect standard that doesn't fit your actual life and start celebrating what you managed to show up for.
00:04:05.949 --> 00:04:15.939
And trust me, whenever you tune into social media, it's going to look and you're going to hear people say,"If you can't show up for a full workout, then don't show up at all.
00:04:15.939 --> 00:04:21.410
You're stopping a workout early, you're not committed." You're gonna hear this messaging time and time again.
00:04:21.930 --> 00:04:24.810
But that is preventing you from moving forward.
00:04:25.399 --> 00:04:35.540
You're juggling a million things, and this is your nudge to give yourself a pep talk that you can build the plan, protect your plan, and lock in.
00:04:35.949 --> 00:04:53.259
This is all tied to what we were talking about last week, getting rid of the idea of falling off the track that anytime something comes up, a work travel, a holiday a big project at work kid illnesses, illnesses for yourself, aging parents.
00:04:53.269 --> 00:05:02.509
You just insert anything here that may knock you off or cause you to fall off track, is it's not falling off track.
00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:07.850
And now we are here in the middle of August, and August is not a deadline.
00:05:08.220 --> 00:05:14.560
You may be returning from your vacations, a slower-paced time at work, kids gearing up to going back to school.
00:05:14.579 --> 00:05:22.019
We're bracing ourselves for the busyness because after all, at least I feel this way, when kids get back to school, it's like happy new year.
00:05:22.279 --> 00:05:24.550
September starts and it's January already.
00:05:24.899 --> 00:05:27.209
But August is a hinge month.
00:05:27.220 --> 00:05:28.589
It's a pivot point.
00:05:28.670 --> 00:05:44.149
Let's get into this practical stuff because the'don't think an all or nothing' term sounds nice, but what you do on a random Tuesday when you're tired and the workout just isn't happening, here's the real how-to.
00:05:44.500 --> 00:05:52.199
So we're gonna go into five ways to keep your fitness in your life without letting it take over or become another thing to stress out about.
00:05:52.699 --> 00:05:56.699
So number one, schedule it like it matters, because it does.
00:05:56.910 --> 00:06:01.160
Surely, you may have heard this before, but we're gonna reframe this.
00:06:01.769 --> 00:06:03.319
Put it on your calendar.
00:06:03.649 --> 00:06:11.259
Put it on your schedule We need to stop treating them, whether we acknowledge it or not, that it's just a bonus.
00:06:11.259 --> 00:06:15.970
It's just a what happens when I'm feeling motivated, when I have energy, when I have time.
00:06:16.829 --> 00:06:20.850
Because to be honest, all three of those things are not going to intersect at the same time.
00:06:21.069 --> 00:06:22.899
If they do, you've hit the jackpot.
00:06:23.740 --> 00:06:32.339
Put it on your calendar, just like you would with anything else, for your career, your kids, your home life, everything.
00:06:32.490 --> 00:06:35.470
Put it on and block it out.
00:06:35.819 --> 00:06:49.819
I do understand, and we will cover this, that things come up, and this is where we celebrate those unfinished workouts, getting two reps in, getting two sets in of a exercise, getting two exercises in, walking for two minutes, walking for twenty minutes.
00:06:50.149 --> 00:06:50.579
Okay?
00:06:50.810 --> 00:06:56.250
But you need to start by scheduling it on your calendar and making it a non-negotiable.
00:06:56.269 --> 00:07:04.629
Now, I'm gonna put a little asterisk with that non-negotiable, okay, is we need to frame it out that this is the time that we are working out.
00:07:04.829 --> 00:07:08.069
And again, we're not focused on this all or nothing, at all costs.
00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:11.449
So it's the time dedicated for you to work out.
00:07:11.449 --> 00:07:12.610
So plan around that.
00:07:12.860 --> 00:07:16.189
You plan this for your family, you need to plan this for yourself.
00:07:16.490 --> 00:07:21.709
So the action step here is open up your calendar and block out your sessions for the next week.
00:07:22.209 --> 00:07:27.759
Number two, build a minimum viable workout I've talked about this one before.
00:07:27.779 --> 00:07:31.410
We have to plan the bare minimum.
00:07:32.370 --> 00:07:43.069
That does not mean that you cannot do more than that, but why we plan a minimum viable workout is life is going to happen.
00:07:43.480 --> 00:07:47.779
And this is where this idea of we're raising the floor to meet yourself where you're at.
00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:52.629
Oftentimes we hear,"I hold myself to high standards." You can absolutely do that.
00:07:52.829 --> 00:07:56.899
If you are a person, and this is how I function, I'm an achiever.
00:07:57.220 --> 00:07:58.930
I am someone who likes to push myself.
00:07:58.949 --> 00:08:04.209
I am someone who, to be honest, does not like leaving sets and reps on the table.
00:08:04.410 --> 00:08:16.329
However, when I have been in moments where I forced myself to complete a workout or fit it in at all costs, it comes back to me in a negative way.
00:08:16.829 --> 00:08:27.980
Or I don't do the workout, and I put myself on that one-way ticket to Guiltville and Shameville, and those are not places we want to go to.
00:08:28.610 --> 00:09:05.080
And it then further, using the term, causes me to fall off the track because I'm living in Guilt and Shameville of saying,"If I could've, I would've, and I must not be that dedicated." So having a minimum viable workout is this idea that it's a workout that we know that we can do it in the smallest amount of time, that if our energy is low, if our motivation isn't there, that we can do some exercises and it counts.
00:09:05.340 --> 00:09:06.490
It is planned out.
00:09:06.490 --> 00:09:08.870
So let's go back to point number one.
00:09:08.870 --> 00:09:10.340
You schedule out your time.
00:09:10.350 --> 00:09:11.830
Let's say it's an hour.
00:09:12.200 --> 00:09:18.259
You need to now pick up a child or address a work email or an, a meeting that's gotten planned.
00:09:18.580 --> 00:09:25.460
Something has interrupted or reduced your amount of workout time, and you now have twenty minutes.
00:09:25.909 --> 00:09:28.840
This is where that minimum viable workout comes in.
00:09:29.370 --> 00:09:36.740
This is where that non-negotiable idea of intention of addressing yourself so that your wellbeing is taken care of.
00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:41.120
So the non-negotiable isn't I have to fit it in at all costs.
00:09:41.350 --> 00:09:47.779
It's I'm putting it in on my terms, still putting myself as a priority here.
00:09:48.279 --> 00:09:54.720
So the action step here is for every workout this week, write down the full version and the 15-minute version.
00:09:55.179 --> 00:09:56.870
This is something I do for my clients.
00:09:56.870 --> 00:10:09.799
This is something that in their workouts, the way I program it, they know if they only have time for the first two exercises, it's going to help them maintain and also help them build strength.
00:10:10.080 --> 00:10:14.299
It doesn't mean that's all they have to do and all the e- other exercises don't count.
00:10:14.620 --> 00:10:25.399
What it is it's a strategically written plan that they don't have to think about,"What is my minimum viable workout?" They are responsible for scheduling out the time for the workout.
00:10:25.490 --> 00:10:27.809
They have the authority over their schedules.
00:10:28.190 --> 00:10:34.669
I am the one who puts in a well-written plan that they are able to adapt it to their own terms.
00:10:34.669 --> 00:10:36.110
They can move it on different days.
00:10:36.450 --> 00:10:48.620
They know that,"Okay, if I have to do the minimum viable workout, it is going to help continue to progress me to my goals." Number three, anchor it to something you already do.
00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:59.429
So this one is really important because It's easier to fall into a rhythm with something if we put it towards an action that we're already doing.
00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:09.730
For example, I have clients who work in a home office, and when they open up their office door, they are greeted with the rest of their life.
00:11:10.570 --> 00:11:29.899
And it makes it harder for them to maybe traverse the steps downstairs to the basement where their workout equipment is, or maybe go into another room because in those ten steps, they get all the questions because they are the person, the calendar holder, the know everything, the person that everybody goes to.
00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:43.080
So by the time they address everyone, and even if they have their time scheduled on the calendar, they have your minimal viable workout, it-- all of that gets eaten up because they get deviated from where they're going.
00:11:43.240 --> 00:12:02.919
So what they will do is they will keep their workout equipment in their office and their blocked out time for working out is either maybe on a lunch break, or they go to work a bit earlier or they stay at work later, and they get their workout done in their office.
00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:24.080
And then when they open that door, they've not only, moved their career along, but they've also addressed their wellness and then they can attend to everybody else without feeling like,"I never got into my workout." So your action step is pick one thing you do every day and stack your workout right after it, before it.
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:30.649
Not I'll fit it in, but it is after this I will do my workout.
00:12:31.299 --> 00:12:32.750
Or maybe it's before.
00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:35.940
Number four, Sunday setup, not Sunday guilt.
00:12:36.440 --> 00:12:38.990
Take ten minutes at the start of every week.
00:12:39.559 --> 00:12:41.080
Look at your calendar.
00:12:41.669 --> 00:12:43.350
Decide where your workouts fit.
00:12:44.259 --> 00:12:49.419
It's not about creating a perfect plan and then beating yourself up when it changes.
00:12:49.860 --> 00:12:51.590
It's about making the week easier.
00:12:52.299 --> 00:12:58.190
So when I work with clients, I want to know the best days for me to schedule workouts.
00:12:58.190 --> 00:13:02.710
They can always move their workouts because life is just organic, it's ever-changing, things happen.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:09.909
But I always stress to them I don't want you to plan a workout on one of your busiest days.
00:13:10.440 --> 00:13:13.990
So if you have a day of the week, let's just pick Tuesday.
00:13:14.419 --> 00:13:21.389
Tuesday, there's four different activities that you have going on, or that's your day you work late at work.
00:13:22.059 --> 00:13:24.179
Maybe we're not scheduling a workout on that day.
00:13:24.299 --> 00:13:25.350
Maybe it's mobility.
00:13:25.450 --> 00:13:26.549
Maybe it's a rest day.
00:13:27.049 --> 00:13:30.460
There is no rhyme or reason as to what day you need to work out.
00:13:30.460 --> 00:13:36.320
There's no scientific reasoning that if you don't get a Monday workout in your whole week is spoiled.
00:13:36.950 --> 00:13:37.269
No.
00:13:37.879 --> 00:13:43.490
You need to align it with your week with what makes sense for your schedule.
00:13:44.350 --> 00:13:48.399
I encourage my clients, don't put a workout on one of your busiest days.
00:13:48.570 --> 00:13:50.330
For some, that works for them.
00:13:50.740 --> 00:13:52.289
For others, it doesn't.
00:13:52.789 --> 00:13:59.759
So we want to schedule our workouts that align with our overall schedule.
00:14:00.259 --> 00:14:03.539
The action step, same day, same 10 minutes every week.
00:14:03.539 --> 00:14:14.500
So place your workouts in a realistic spot and time of day that you know you'll be able to show up for number five, consistency is a trend, not a streak.
00:14:14.590 --> 00:14:27.230
So the misconception about consistency is that you're never missing a workout, that you're always showing up, and consistency somehow has evolved into seven days a week, fifty-two weeks of the year.
00:14:27.840 --> 00:14:30.440
That is not what consistency means with your workouts.
00:14:31.139 --> 00:14:34.570
I have some clients where their consistency is one workout a week.
00:14:35.460 --> 00:14:39.100
I have some clients where six workouts a week is their consistency.
00:14:39.879 --> 00:14:45.279
Neither client doing one workout a week or six workouts a week is the supreme.
00:14:46.250 --> 00:14:49.129
That's what works for them and their schedule.
00:14:50.059 --> 00:15:02.309
Yes, based on research and physiological aspects of building strength, I would like clients to be able to do two to three strength training workouts per week.
00:15:02.710 --> 00:15:10.179
However, in particular, this client who's doing one strength workout a week, this is what works for her lifestyle now.
00:15:10.210 --> 00:15:19.779
Because zero strength workouts a week versus one we want to have at least one, and this aligns with her life at this current season.
00:15:20.279 --> 00:15:21.789
Is she capable of doing more?
00:15:21.950 --> 00:15:24.480
Surely, when her season changes.
00:15:25.200 --> 00:15:34.080
So with consistency, and this goes back to understanding your schedule, is maybe your life right now can't handle six workouts.
00:15:34.889 --> 00:15:40.230
Maybe it's three workouts, maybe it's one, maybe it's between one and six.
00:15:40.710 --> 00:15:43.690
Whatever that looks like, that is your consistency.
00:15:44.250 --> 00:15:54.929
Now, going back to this client who's doing one strength training workout a week- She finds herself in some weeks doing two, and other weeks doing one, another week doing three.
00:15:55.480 --> 00:15:58.659
That does not mean she's inconsistent at all.
00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:02.639
Her consistency is different than other people's.
00:16:03.049 --> 00:16:11.519
So we want to avoid shaming ourselves where our minimum viable workout weeks are one.
00:16:12.330 --> 00:16:19.850
There are times where the client who is doing six workouts a week needs to drop down to four.
00:16:20.340 --> 00:16:25.090
That doesn't mean she's ruined her consistency streak because it's not a streak.
00:16:25.750 --> 00:16:39.899
It is following with showing up on your terms, not when you want to, but being disciplined, scheduling out that time, and knowing that this is important, this is a priority.
00:16:40.850 --> 00:16:55.639
So the action step here is at the end of the week, don't ask,"Did I do it all perfectly?" Ask,"Did I move in the right direction most days?" So that's the real measure here is are we moving in the right direction most of the days?
00:16:56.299 --> 00:17:19.039
Because even as someone like myself who is in the business, who has set my life up around working out, not the sole reason why I'm on this earth, but where I am training for ultramarathon distances, there are days where I can't get a run in even if it's scheduled.
00:17:19.650 --> 00:17:27.950
So what I do is adjust, I pivot, or I do a minimum viable workout So nothing here requires more grit or willpower.
00:17:28.309 --> 00:17:35.009
It's just fewer in-the-moment decisions and defining what counts as success.
00:17:35.509 --> 00:17:41.980
Schedule it, build your floor, anchor it, and set it up weekly, and l-look for that trend.
00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:44.670
That's what we wanna do here.
00:17:45.240 --> 00:17:50.380
There's no one-way ticket to Guilt or Shameville if you leave sets and reps on the table.
00:17:50.690 --> 00:17:52.089
Celebrate that you showed up.
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:55.819
Celebrate that it was a minute, two minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes.
00:17:56.240 --> 00:17:58.660
This is how you build the consistency.
00:17:59.190 --> 00:18:11.420
I've shared before on the podcast when my children were younger, I deemed myself super inconsistent with my workouts because I wasn't working out six days a week.
00:18:12.049 --> 00:18:18.980
Now, I was working out more like the client I have who is doing one workout a week.
00:18:19.480 --> 00:18:34.259
I have now built myself up to where I'm doing anywhere between five to six workouts a week, two to three strength training sessions, and five runs a week, and a cross-training spin workout, and then there's mobility on top of that.
00:18:34.430 --> 00:18:38.579
That does not mean this is the marker of success and the golden rule in what everyone should strive to.
00:18:38.579 --> 00:18:46.329
No, this is what, for me, in my training season for ultramarathons, I'm doing.
00:18:46.559 --> 00:18:47.400
It will change.
00:18:47.410 --> 00:18:52.420
It has shifted and changed where I've reduced running and increased cross-training.
00:18:52.789 --> 00:19:01.549
There's no hard, fast rule that states that you will not see success or build strength if you're not in the gym twenty-four/seven.
00:19:01.809 --> 00:19:03.410
That is not how it works.
00:19:03.740 --> 00:19:14.450
What we are focused on is the actions that are going to help us move in the right direction.
00:19:14.799 --> 00:19:27.529
That's showing up for ourselves and prioritizing our health and well-being and knowing that we are human, and some days life is gonna get lifey, and it will win.
00:19:28.039 --> 00:19:38.910
But that is no reason to purchase a one-way ticket to Guilt or Shameville because you are human, and it is okay to miss a week.
00:19:39.240 --> 00:19:50.920
But what it is not okay is to guilt and shame ourselves or compare ourselves to the curated feed of a fitness influencer or even a fit professional.
00:19:50.920 --> 00:20:02.480
And if they are a true fitness professional, most will say,"Hey, life happens." It happens with them, and they will be transparent about it That is all I have for you today.
