Internal Peace & Divine Identity Part 1

In this encouraging episode of the Latter Up Podcast, Fabiola and Karem explore how easily homeschooling can become a place where we measure our worth through our children’s accomplishments, our routines, our spiritual lives, or how our families compare to others. What begins as inspiration can quietly turn into self-criticism and what Tara Brach describes as a “trance of unworthiness.”

Together, they explore what it looks like to step out of comparison and into greater peace by remembering that our worth isn't something we have to earn. Fabiola introduces Kristin Neff’s three components of self-compassion—mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness—and explains how self-compassion allows us to acknowledge our struggles honestly without turning them into judgments about who we are.

The episode offers practical ways for parents to interrupt negative thought patterns, reconnect with their divine identity, and grow without using shame as motivation—ultimately modeling healthy self-compassion for their children.

Key Topics Discussed:

• The Comparison Trap: How academics, curriculum, extracurriculars, spiritual growth, and family life can become sources of comparison.
• Inspiration vs. Comparison: Recognizing when "I could try that" becomes "I'm not doing enough."
• Self-Compassion: Understanding mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness—and how self-compassion differs from making excuses.
• Separating Circumstances From Identity: Learning to acknowledge mistakes and challenges without allowing them to define who we are.
• The "Trance of Unworthiness": Recognizing when difficult moments become evidence that something is wrong with us.
• Practical Tools: Using a physical pause, compassionate self-talk, and questions like "What do I need right now?" to interrupt comparison and self-criticism.
