00:00:31.137 --> 00:00:36.857
I'm Madeline Lowry, a neural retraining specialist and founder of Twin Cities Neural Retraining.
00:00:37.117 --> 00:00:42.457
I work with clients in virtual sessions to resolve the hidden sources of stress
00:00:42.457 --> 00:00:46.197
behind chronic health issues, including thyroid function.
00:00:48.177 --> 00:00:53.337
In this episode, I'm going to talk about the impact of trauma on chronic health
00:00:53.337 --> 00:00:55.937
issues and the role of the subconscious mind.
00:00:56.577 --> 00:01:01.177
In the last episode, I described my struggles with classic hypothyroid symptoms
00:01:01.177 --> 00:01:06.517
and the unconventional thinking that led me to discover the ultimate root cause,
00:01:06.737 --> 00:01:08.557
which was the subconscious mind,
00:01:08.757 --> 00:01:13.697
and also drove me to train in an advanced method of neural retraining.
00:01:14.517 --> 00:01:18.357
If you are finally ready to address your thyroid issues in a new way,
00:01:18.597 --> 00:01:22.197
a mind-body way, then this podcast is for you.
00:01:22.917 --> 00:01:26.557
I'm going to connect the dots for you so that you will understand the real reasons
00:01:26.557 --> 00:01:31.537
you still have thyroid problems, despite everything you've tried and what you can do about it.
00:01:32.257 --> 00:01:36.917
Could neural retraining be your next best step to thyroid healing?

00:01:45.017 --> 00:01:50.957
Why is trauma so impactful and why does early life trauma raise our risk of
00:01:50.957 --> 00:01:56.697
chronic health issues for the rest of our life and what is the role of the subconscious mind,
00:01:57.317 --> 00:02:01.957
in this episode i'm going to give you my perspective as a neural retraining specialist.
00:02:03.865 --> 00:02:07.685
Now, in the last episode, I described how I resisted the explanations from my
00:02:07.685 --> 00:02:09.145
practitioners and doctors.
00:02:09.505 --> 00:02:11.245
I felt that there had to be a
00:02:11.245 --> 00:02:15.385
further root cause underlying the many underperforming systems in my body.
00:02:15.785 --> 00:02:20.485
In hindsight, it was so obvious. I should have seen it at once.
00:02:20.905 --> 00:02:26.065
I mean, I went to a science and math high school. I was a biology major in college.
00:02:26.545 --> 00:02:32.725
I had all the pieces. I just had to take it one step further. And yet, I did not.
00:02:33.505 --> 00:02:38.905
And most people don't either. Why is that? I think it's because it is so counter
00:02:38.905 --> 00:02:41.085
to our expectations of medical care.
00:02:41.445 --> 00:02:45.585
There is an unspoken assumption that if you have physical health issues,
00:02:45.845 --> 00:02:48.785
these have to be addressed at a physical level.
00:02:49.305 --> 00:02:54.385
And yet, who or what is the boss of all our bodily systems?
00:02:54.945 --> 00:02:59.865
Who or what orchestrates their perfect synchrony when we are in full health?
00:03:00.485 --> 00:03:04.685
Who or what regulates our core temperature, our hormone balance,
00:03:04.925 --> 00:03:08.905
digestive processes, immune function, fluid balance, wound healing,
00:03:09.025 --> 00:03:12.685
nutrient uptake, or anything else supporting our physical health?
00:03:13.245 --> 00:03:17.605
It's the brain. And not just the brain, but the subconscious mind.
00:03:18.085 --> 00:03:24.005
Let me tell you a little bit about the subconscious mind. I want you to understand how powerful it is.
00:03:24.305 --> 00:03:28.065
When we talk about the mind, we are usually talking about the conscious mind,
00:03:28.065 --> 00:03:30.045
the thinking, logical mind.
00:03:30.345 --> 00:03:35.405
This is the mind that gets us an A in chemistry, that we rely on to solve the
00:03:35.405 --> 00:03:38.065
crossword puzzle, or that problem at work.
00:03:38.345 --> 00:03:40.965
But there is another mind, the
00:03:40.965 --> 00:03:46.425
subconscious mind, that is responsible for 90-95% of all brain activity.
00:03:46.965 --> 00:03:50.525
It runs all the systems of the body and always has.
00:03:50.845 --> 00:03:56.345
It is constantly monitoring everything going on around us, and everything going
00:03:56.345 --> 00:03:59.365
on inside us, including our thoughts and emotions.
00:04:00.325 --> 00:04:04.385
It is capable of managing 40 million bits of data per second,
00:04:04.625 --> 00:04:09.825
while the conscious mind can handle only 40, making the subconscious mind 1
00:04:09.825 --> 00:04:12.625
million times more powerful than the conscious mind.
00:04:13.506 --> 00:04:17.686
There are two more things I want you to understand. The subconscious mind is
00:04:17.686 --> 00:04:23.526
an associative mind, a neural net, and the subconscious has no sense of time.
00:04:23.866 --> 00:04:28.026
There is no past and no future for the subconscious mind.
00:04:28.466 --> 00:04:34.066
Everything is now. So when people say, oh, I don't think about that painful
00:04:34.066 --> 00:04:36.886
emotional experience anymore, that's in the past.
00:04:37.106 --> 00:04:39.326
They're talking about their conscious mind.
00:04:39.586 --> 00:04:44.706
On a subconscious level, it is still impacting you, unless you have done the
00:04:44.706 --> 00:04:46.826
work to fully process and release it.
00:04:47.306 --> 00:04:53.526
One of the primary tasks of the subconscious is to assess if we are safe or unsafe.
00:04:53.946 --> 00:04:59.586
And that simple determination directs how the nervous system responds moment to moment.
00:04:59.986 --> 00:05:04.746
You may have heard of the autonomic nervous system, which has two modes of operation.
00:05:05.086 --> 00:05:10.666
The fight, flight, freeze response, or what we call the stress response,
00:05:10.666 --> 00:05:16.906
or the rest, digest, and heal response, which is the relaxation response.
00:05:17.346 --> 00:05:21.686
And here's the crux of the matter, because when we are in that fight,
00:05:21.926 --> 00:05:27.626
flight, or freeze state, all the restorative functions of the body are inhibited
00:05:27.626 --> 00:05:29.846
to respond to an emergency.
00:05:30.466 --> 00:05:36.886
Let me say that another way. No healing can occur when we are in a stress response.
00:05:37.406 --> 00:05:44.066
Dr. Lissa Rankin, the author of Mind Over Medicine, explains that the average
00:05:44.066 --> 00:05:50.726
person has about 50 stress responses in a day, while chronically ill people may have hundreds.
00:05:51.306 --> 00:05:56.866
If you read Dr. Rankin's book, you will learn that her own health tanked after
00:05:56.866 --> 00:05:58.606
a series of traumatic events.
00:05:58.966 --> 00:06:05.746
And so did Annie Hoppers, the creator of DNRS, that basic method of neural retraining
00:06:05.746 --> 00:06:11.526
I described in the last episode, and the author of Wired for Healing. But I digress.
00:06:12.444 --> 00:06:17.104
So now let us go back to the original question. Why is trauma so impactful?
00:06:17.604 --> 00:06:24.584
Why is early life trauma, especially, correlated with lifetime increased risk
00:06:24.584 --> 00:06:25.864
of chronic health issues?
00:06:26.304 --> 00:06:29.484
This would be a good time for me to say that I am not a doctor,
00:06:29.864 --> 00:06:31.744
a neuroscientist, or a therapist.
00:06:32.264 --> 00:06:37.704
I am a neural retraining specialist who works with the subconscious mind directly,
00:06:37.704 --> 00:06:42.344
and I have had the great privilege of witnessing the associations that arise
00:06:42.344 --> 00:06:45.924
in my clients' subconscious minds in real time.
00:06:46.204 --> 00:06:49.444
And it is from that experience that I offer these insights.
00:06:49.984 --> 00:06:56.644
The way I see it, trauma, especially early life trauma, is so impactful because
00:06:56.644 --> 00:06:59.144
it changes the way the nervous system works.
00:06:59.504 --> 00:07:04.504
And these changes persist until we have had an opportunity to fully process
00:07:04.504 --> 00:07:06.044
the emotional pain of the trauma.
00:07:06.044 --> 00:07:11.384
For the traumatized person, the threshold for feeling unsafe in the subconscious
00:07:11.384 --> 00:07:16.124
mind is lowered, and it's more likely to call for the stress response.
00:07:16.744 --> 00:07:21.824
And that, I believe, is the reason why early life trauma makes us more susceptible
00:07:21.824 --> 00:07:26.224
to chronic illness, including low thyroid function.
00:07:26.824 --> 00:07:33.224
Let me explain a little more. It seems to be a protective mechanism of the body-mind
00:07:33.224 --> 00:07:39.144
that when we are in a painful emotional situation, or have a shock that overwhelms us,
00:07:39.644 --> 00:07:44.364
that trauma is frozen and held somewhere in the subconscious mind.
00:07:45.164 --> 00:07:50.504
At a safe point in our lives, we may have the opportunity and the resources
00:07:50.504 --> 00:07:55.904
to resolve the trauma emotions, and that memory becomes more neutral.
00:07:56.524 --> 00:08:02.524
This is beneficial for two reasons. First, it reduces the overall subconscious stress load.
00:08:02.764 --> 00:08:08.044
And second, any programming that might be associated with that trauma experience
00:08:08.044 --> 00:08:12.464
is deprioritized in the operating system of the mind.
00:08:12.884 --> 00:08:17.164
And this is another important concept about how the subconscious mind works.
00:08:18.024 --> 00:08:25.444
The subconscious mind prioritizes highly negative experiences that are perceived to have survival value.
00:08:25.904 --> 00:08:29.464
This is so that if we ever find ourselves in the same situation again,
00:08:29.764 --> 00:08:34.404
we will be more likely to survive without any thinking needed.
00:08:35.580 --> 00:08:39.540
There are two important points here. Reducing the overall subconscious stress
00:08:39.540 --> 00:08:44.580
load by neutralizing trauma memories is important because the more unresolved
00:08:44.580 --> 00:08:48.660
stress we carry, the more time we are spending in the stress response.
00:08:48.980 --> 00:08:53.900
You may not feel it because we tend to habituate to whatever level of stress
00:08:53.900 --> 00:08:56.580
we have, but it's impacting our health.
00:08:57.040 --> 00:09:02.720
No restorative functions means no healing, and that means negative health impacts
00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:07.920
start to compound and a negative health spiral begins or is maintained.
00:09:08.540 --> 00:09:13.980
Now for the second point, deprioritizing negative programming is important because
00:09:13.980 --> 00:09:16.740
it is another contributor to stress.
00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:22.800
It makes stressful situations or triggers more stressful than they need to be.
00:09:23.180 --> 00:09:28.080
Again, these are patterns that persist until we can retrain the brain.
00:09:28.520 --> 00:09:33.600
For example, if you had a painful emotional experience around having your house
00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:37.560
robbed, or you watched your parents go through that as a child,
00:09:37.840 --> 00:09:42.260
you may have programming that compels you to check that all the doors are locked
00:09:42.260 --> 00:09:43.920
at night before you can go to sleep.
00:09:44.540 --> 00:09:49.040
As the intensity of those memories is reduced through neural retraining,
00:09:49.300 --> 00:09:53.360
the anxiety about checking the locks on the doors is reduced as well.
00:09:53.760 --> 00:09:58.280
And if it is not, that would mean that there other emotionally intense experiences
00:09:58.280 --> 00:10:00.820
that are associated with this compulsion as well.
00:10:01.460 --> 00:10:06.260
Relevant experiences include our own, as well as things that we have witnessed,
00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:11.520
heard about, or even seen in movies, especially as an impressionable child.
00:10:12.140 --> 00:10:16.920
So hopefully this is helping you to connect the dots between what has happened
00:10:16.920 --> 00:10:23.540
to you, your behaviors, emotional responses, and why early life trauma creates
00:10:23.540 --> 00:10:26.680
lasting negative impacts until it can be resolved.
00:10:28.055 --> 00:10:32.395
We have the accumulation of unresolved subconscious stress and the conditioned
00:10:32.395 --> 00:10:36.815
behaviors that amplify our experience of every subsequent stress event,
00:10:37.115 --> 00:10:42.755
which contribute to being in the stress response too often and halts our healing processes,
00:10:43.215 --> 00:10:48.775
including detoxification, nutrient uptake, digestion, elimination,
00:10:49.315 --> 00:10:55.555
hormone balance, this includes thyroid hormone, energy production, and everything else.
00:10:56.515 --> 00:11:01.135
But trauma is not the only barrier to healing held in the subconscious mind
00:11:01.135 --> 00:11:07.295
we will be discussing more of these barriers as i see them in my practice in future episodes,
00:11:08.615 --> 00:11:14.275
and to set your mind at ease resolving traumas can be done fairly quickly and
00:11:14.275 --> 00:11:21.215
easily using the advanced neural retraining method that i am trained in tune
00:11:21.215 --> 00:11:25.755
in next time to hear more about this method and how I use it in virtual sessions.
00:11:27.915 --> 00:11:31.435
