In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at Synapse Films’ new Blu-ray release of TAG: The Assassination Game, the wonderfully strange 1982 cult comedy thriller starring Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton.
Long before laser tag and multiplayer video games took over college campuses, TAG: The Assassination Game imagined a campus-wide competition where students stalk one another with toy guns, eliminating their classmates until only one player remains. It’s supposed to be harmless fun, until somebody decides to start playing the game for real.
Directed by Nick Castle, who horror fans also know as the original Shape from John Carpenter’s Halloween, the movie combines college comedy, romance, suspense and slasher-movie elements into a peculiar early-1980s cocktail. Robert Carradine stars as Alex Marsh, a student who becomes involved with the game and with Linda Hamilton’s Susan Swayze, only to find himself caught up in something considerably more dangerous than a campus competition.
Gary revisits TAG: The Assassination Game to see how this largely forgotten piece of 1980s cult cinema plays today. Does its unusual combination of comedy and thriller actually work? How do Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton fare in roles from early in their careers? Does the movie deserve to be rediscovered? And exactly how seriously should anyone take a college game involving trench coats and brightly colored toy guns?
Then Gary digs into Synapse Films’ new Blu-ray release, examining the picture quality and transfer, audio presentation, special features and bonus material, packaging and overall presentation.
One of the joys of boutique physical media is seeing movies that could easily disappear into the cracks of film history receive another chance to find an audience. Is TAG: The Assassination Game one of those forgotten movies worth rediscovering?
And most importantly, is Synapse Films’ new Blu-ray worth adding to your physical media collection?
