Shipping carries about 85% of the world’s cargo, and the industry has committed to net zero by around 2050. But who pays for the switch to cleaner fuels, and what happens if the world cannot agree on a price for carbon?
In this episode of the F+L Webcast, host Vicky Denton talks with Sanjay Verma, Senior Advisor, Decarbonisation – Marine at Wärtsilä Singapore, about the IMO net-zero framework, the economics of alternative fuels, and what engine makers are doing while the rules remain unsettled. Sanjay has spent more than four decades in shipping: 14 years at sea as a marine engineer, then as a ship and industrial surveyor with Lloyd’s Register, and since 1999 at Wärtsilä in India, Finland and Singapore.
He explains why ships built today will still be sailing in 2050, why owners will not choose costlier low-carbon fuels without a carbon tax, and why the IMO’s proposed global framework has stalled amid politics and lobbying, ahead of the next MEPC meeting. He also covers why no single fuel will replace oil at sea, why the cheapest emissions cut is the fuel never burned, what changing fuels means for lubricants, and how Singapore is preparing to bunker them all.
