00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.800
Welcome to Embodied Writing Warrior, the show where healing gets a book talk upgrade and consistency feels like foreplay.
00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:23.120
I'm Kayla, a writer, recovered white knuckler, wellness math 100 dropout, and the woman who turned her food freedom journey into a Y choose romance with two very opinionated inner archetypes.
00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:35.439
This is where high-performing, deeply creative women stop treating their bodies like a performance review and start treating their lives like the spicy novel they were always meant to be.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:36.799
Let's go.
00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:43.439
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Embodied Writing Warrior Podcast.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:48.320
Today we are tackling a deeply important question.
00:00:49.280 --> 00:01:00.240
If you have a weight loss goal, body transformation goal, or a health goal, is it a preference or an alter?
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:08.719
Now, this is a show about food freedom, deep health, creativity, spiritual growth.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:18.000
And sometimes these things also include desires to shape-shift the physical body.
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:30.239
If you've listened to previous episodes like 226 or 262, you'll know that I believe real feminine empowerment is about choice.
00:01:31.040 --> 00:02:07.120
Just as women now have the choice to stay at home with their children, pursue a career, or master the art of balancing both, I believe in today's world, women also get to choose between either accepting their bodies exactly as they are, pursuing a transformation on their terms, or striking their own unique balance between loving, appreciating their bodies as they are now, while also working to create change.
00:02:07.359 --> 00:02:13.520
I don't think it's ever the physical transformation itself that's the issue.
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:25.840
I think the issue can become how intensely that physical transformation is pursued, why it's being pursued, and at what cost.
00:02:26.960 --> 00:02:37.360
Today we're gonna cover the red flags that indicate your preference or desire for a body transformation might have turned into an altar.
00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:47.759
We're gonna talk about why worshiping a goal, weight, size, or any metric is disastrous for food freedom and consistency.
00:02:48.479 --> 00:02:56.400
We're gonna talk about the elemental path back to relegating a body transformation to its rightful place.
00:02:57.199 --> 00:03:08.960
Once you do this, food freedom, consistency, and honestly, just feeling less miserable and frustrated all tend to happen naturally as a result.
00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:20.879
This episode gets more personal than some of the recent ones, but I think this personal story is universal in many ways.
00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:27.680
And the lesson was incredibly valuable, so it's worth diving into on the show today.
00:03:27.919 --> 00:03:34.560
I had to ask myself this question after a road trip in mid-July.
00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:47.759
So I went down to the States to surprise my mom for her 60th birthday, see my siblings, my niece, my nephews that I haven't seen in forever, which was so nice.
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:54.639
And also, road trips have historically been problematic for me.
00:03:54.879 --> 00:04:03.120
They tend to become these three, four-day effort spirals where I'm devouring everything in sight.
00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:07.360
Now, this road trip, I was determined to show up differently.
00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:28.240
I wanted to create a new proof of concept that I could go on a road trip, indulge some of the time, but also make more aligned choices and not use the trip as an excuse to eat so much that I'd go to bed every single night with a tummy ache, which has basically always been the case in the past.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:40.480
I went into this road trip with more consistency than ever, more presence, and I was feeling really good about where I was physically, mentally, all the things.
00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:44.639
The road trip itself went so well.
00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:55.199
Yes, there were more indulgences than my everyday eating, but there was also more intentionally choosing healthier meals more often.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:59.600
I kept up with my kundalini and my evening ritual.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:07.839
I made time for my long run on the Sunday while I was there, and I didn't get a single tummy ache from overeating.
00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:14.319
Even the drives themselves were not full of timbids and candy and sugary drinks.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:25.759
It was basically all water and a few sugar-free energy drinks because let's be real, 11 plus hours of driving each way when I hate driving.
00:05:26.079 --> 00:05:28.160
Yes, I still want caffeine.
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:29.360
Thank you very much.
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:35.759
And you know, when I got home from this road trip, I expected to be up in weight.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:42.319
That's normal after a prolonged drive where you have more sugar, salt, carbohydrates in the system.
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.639
I expected five, maybe six pounds.
00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.639
And I got home to find out that I'd gained 10.
00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:55.279
Not five, not six, not even eight, ten.
00:05:56.240 --> 00:06:04.879
This led to a ton of frustration, confusion, and also some deep discouragement.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:08.879
I had a couple very off weeks after this happened.
00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:12.720
I also realized something during those off weeks.
00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:20.160
This realization came from listening to an audiobook called You Are Not Behind by Megan Aspury.
00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:22.639
It was one Spotify recommended.
00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:27.680
Usually they do a pretty good job with that, and I had 11 hours of driving ahead of me.
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:34.000
Now, this one was more religious than a lot of the books I consume.
00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:47.839
And if you're like me and more spiritual than religious, this book still has a beautiful message if you're able to read it with your own personal version of spirituality in mind.
00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:55.600
One thing I loved about the book was that she didn't write in a holier than thou or self-righteous way.
00:06:55.920 --> 00:06:58.160
She was deeply honest.
00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:09.600
One of the things she admitted in the book was that sometimes she wanted the relationship or the job promotion more than she wanted Jesus.
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:17.199
That stuck with me after getting home and feeling emotionally trainwrecked by a 10-pound weight gain.
00:07:17.839 --> 00:07:24.959
So emotionally train wrecked that I had moments where I wanted to give up on this book launch altogether.
00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:27.120
It was that bad.
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:36.319
To be fair, there was also some absolute chaos with the book cover designing journey, which did not help matters.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:57.040
But I had to get honest with myself about the fact that sometimes I prioritize the external stuff, the body transformation, the book funnel success, the beautiful book cover I'd been dreaming about, more than I prioritize peace.
00:07:57.600 --> 00:07:59.680
That was a hard thing to face.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:05.279
It's also not easy admitting this on the podcast.
00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:11.680
And I'm still sharing it because this pattern is not unique to me.
00:08:12.319 --> 00:08:15.680
It's something many people wrestle with.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:23.360
And I think it's especially common in high-performing women with a lot of ambition and big dreams.
00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:28.000
And the ambition and the big dreams are not the problem.
00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:36.399
The problem is when those big dreams turn into altars instead of preferences or desires.
00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:42.559
The problem becomes when the desire stops being a desire and becomes a courtroom.
00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:51.039
So, how do you know when a desire or a preference mutates into an altar?
00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:56.320
There's a few key ways, and they were revealed to me in my own lived experience.
00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:03.120
First, an altar by its very nature demands a sacrifice.
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:22.159
When you have a preference, a weight fluctuation after a road trip may feel less than ideal.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:28.399
When you have an alter, that fluctuation can feel catastrophic.
00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:34.480
Like the thing that mattered most was taken away in the span of a few short days.
00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:38.320
You might also end up sacrificing presence.
00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:52.960
When you want your circumstances to be different with too much intensity, you sacrifice the joy of being where you are and start worshiping a future place that you're not yet.
00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:59.360
And when something becomes an altar, there's often a lot of bargaining and conditions in place.
00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:09.279
You might make an internal promise to be grateful, trusting, and calm when the evidence shows up on your ego's timing.
00:10:10.080 --> 00:10:26.879
And maybe the biggest red flag that you've turned something into an altar is losing momentum and consistency when it feels like the thing you're worshiping gets farther away or even feels impossible in a hard moment.
00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:37.679
So instead of continuing with the rituals and daily habits because they're attached to the identity you're building, there can be this feeling of what's the point?
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.000
It's not getting me closer to the goal, so why bother?
00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:54.080
This is why worshipping the body transformation itself, instead of making it a preference, is disastrous for food freedom and consistency.
00:10:55.039 --> 00:11:08.240
If your consistency is conditional based on how much progress your consistency seems to be creating, that consistency is going to disappear when progress slows.
00:11:08.960 --> 00:11:23.200
And when progress slows and it feels like you might not get the thing, you turned into an altar, that's when the despair, the frustration, the hopelessness, and the fear kicks in.
00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:26.559
Pressure is going to build in the system.
00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:30.080
Your body is going to seek relief.
00:11:30.799 --> 00:11:35.679
And this is where many of the effort moments with food come from.
00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:45.360
But then this often creates more negative emotions because now the gap between where you are and where you want to be has likely widened.
00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:50.399
So more negative emotions flood in, and then your body wants more relief.
00:11:50.799 --> 00:11:56.639
The solution here isn't simply to get back on track with your habits.
00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:06.559
The solution, the deeper work, is to heal the tendency to worship a size, a number, or a destination.
00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:11.840
And that often requires a sequenced elemental process.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:19.840
This is something I come back to in my own life because it's a framework that applies to so many things.
00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:28.240
This involves moving from earth to water to fire to air, and finally, ether.
00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:42.240
Many high-performing women who struggle with this tendency to worship an outcome often have underactivated earth and water and overactive fire.
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:49.279
You always want to start in earth, especially for body transformation and health pursuits.
00:12:50.320 --> 00:13:00.080
The very first part of any health transformation needs to be body cooperation instead of control.
00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:10.799
And then you also want presence, which is something that often leaks away when you start turning a preference into an altar.
00:13:11.039 --> 00:13:17.120
These two things are key if you want to keep a desire from turning into an altar.
00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:26.720
When you move back into this place of body cooperation and presence, it becomes about so much more than the number.
00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:35.600
For me, I realize that when my blood sugar is all over the place, I'm more emotional, less creative, and less focused.
00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:44.559
Not only that, but when I'm fatigued from poor sleep or overindulging, it becomes harder to show up fully to my workouts.
00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:49.519
And my workouts are not about the calories burned.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:59.840
As someone with a ton of high voltage energy in my system, challenging workouts are part of what helps me stay balanced.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:07.840
I even had a naturopath once tell me that I was a human pressure cooker and needed to run or dance regularly.
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:10.720
Good news is that I love both.
00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:12.480
So that's Earth.
00:14:13.039 --> 00:14:15.279
Then you move into water.
00:14:15.840 --> 00:14:18.960
And this has a few key pieces.
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:27.919
The first is once you've noticed, oh, my fire got too hot, I turned this health goal into an altar again.
00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:31.600
You do not beat yourself up or make yourself wrong.
00:14:31.919 --> 00:14:39.279
You give the parts of you that turned this desire into an altar, compassion, and understanding.
00:14:39.600 --> 00:14:50.879
I had to realize after this road trip that, of course, this might be something I come back to and struggle with from time to time.
00:14:51.840 --> 00:15:13.759
After spending so many years in the personal training industry, a place where there's this silent, unspoken rule that a trainer's body is their business card, of course, this would come up again as I get ready to release the most important book I've ever written, a book about food freedom.
00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:25.360
Now, for the record, this unspoken rule about the body as business card was not something my specific training studio I worked at, subscribed to, or endorsed.
00:15:25.679 --> 00:15:35.840
I am referring to the larger, more universal assumptions people make about a person's body when they're in a health-related field.
00:15:36.080 --> 00:15:38.399
So this is universal, not personal.
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:43.519
So it makes sense that more pressure would come back in this season.
00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:50.879
Because while the body doesn't tell the entire story, it does tell part of the story.
00:15:51.200 --> 00:16:00.159
There is this part of me that fears not looking the part of someone who's qualified to teach food freedom.
00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:13.360
Because there's a fear that someone out there who could truly benefit from what I'm sharing turns away because they judged the book by its cover.
00:16:14.320 --> 00:16:26.080
So, of course, I might get a little too fixated on the cover, both metaphorically and also hilariously, with my own book cover for this book.
00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:41.120
The other part of this that feels even trickier is not only having challenges around food resurface on occasion, but then also having these old challenges around body image resurface.
00:16:41.360 --> 00:16:50.080
But I've also realized that expecting to never have these challenges come up is a form of perfectionism in disguise.
00:16:50.639 --> 00:16:54.240
And I think this is something many leaders struggle with.
00:16:54.799 --> 00:17:00.799
Speaking of books I've loved lately, I'm in the middle of Into the Body by Andy Love.
00:17:00.960 --> 00:17:05.440
And I don't remember the last time I've highlighted so many parts of one book.
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:16.559
She shared that she sometimes thinks that she should be more embodied, regulated, and feel more powerful since she teaches on these things.
00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:24.240
And she commented on the violence of turning your humanity into evidence against your calling.
00:17:25.119 --> 00:17:30.799
Which, yeah, I felt that one on a visceral level.
00:17:32.240 --> 00:17:35.839
She also shared these lines that I highlighted.
00:17:36.720 --> 00:17:41.359
This is the part about expertise no one talks about enough.
00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:46.160
Your mastery does not exempt you from being human.
00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:52.720
In fact, if it is real mastery, it brings you closer to your humanity.
00:17:53.440 --> 00:17:55.759
It makes you more honest about it.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:17:59.440
It makes you more responsible for it.
00:18:00.240 --> 00:18:11.039
It keeps pulling you back to the floor, the breath, the repair, the truth, the body you are actually living inside.
00:18:11.759 --> 00:18:16.319
Personally, I will probably come back to those lines many times.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:26.480
And if you're also in a leadership field where sometimes you feel like your hard moments disqualify you, they do not.
00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:37.519
Instead, they're deeper invitations to learn and grow through the hard moments so you can help those you're leading do the same.
00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:41.920
Water brings you closer to your humanity.
00:18:42.480 --> 00:18:50.799
It's where you stop demanding that you never have hard moments and start getting deeply skilled at repairing when you do.
00:18:52.240 --> 00:19:12.160
Water is also about acknowledging the truth, the real emotions, the frustrations, the doubt, the moments where you find yourself slipping back into unwanted approaches, when you notice your hearth fire has turned into wildfire.
00:19:13.119 --> 00:19:24.480
Water helps you come back to yourself to repair, to forgive, to release, so you can return the goal to being a preference instead of an altar.
00:19:24.720 --> 00:19:30.079
Then you bring back the fire, the desire, the ambition, the hunger.
00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:44.319
But now it's from this place where you're rooted in presence, body cooperation, and a willingness to be a messy human instead of a volcano goddess of unrealistically linear progress.
00:19:45.119 --> 00:19:51.440
This is fire with a hearth, not the wildfire that forgets earth and water come first.
00:19:52.880 --> 00:19:59.920
Once you've got fire back in its rightful place, you move on to air, your perspective.
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:09.839
I was previously telling a story that my body needed to look a certain precise way by book launch time.
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:16.000
And that story was creating pressure, scale worship, and internal chaos.
00:20:17.039 --> 00:20:22.799
I had to begin telling a new story, the one I recently read about in Into the Body.
00:20:23.599 --> 00:20:32.640
An unexpected weight fluctuation and a messy two weeks afterwards do not disqualify me from delivering this book.
00:20:33.119 --> 00:20:41.759
They make me even more qualified when I choose to lead myself through the mess in real time and learn from it.
00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:47.759
There was once upon a time when I wouldn't have even shared this on the podcast.
00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:53.440
It would have seemed too shallow, too messy, too human.
00:20:54.079 --> 00:21:07.200
I would have either never talked about it, or I would have come back months later after making all the progress I desired and been like, yay, here's the big lesson I learned from that hard moment months ago.
00:21:07.839 --> 00:21:12.319
And sure, that can be helpful, but it's not mastery.
00:21:12.640 --> 00:21:28.079
Mastery is letting you in on what's truly present when it's here and showing you how I lead myself through it in real time without waiting for the polish of wisdom that you gain in hindsight.
00:21:28.799 --> 00:21:30.960
And finally, ether.
00:21:32.240 --> 00:21:34.079
This is about trust.
00:21:34.720 --> 00:21:48.720
Trust in timing, trust in a higher timeline, trust that things will ultimately work out as they're meant to for the highest good of everyone involved.
00:21:49.680 --> 00:21:56.079
Maybe I had this happen to reveal where my own inner work needed to be directed.
00:21:56.799 --> 00:22:08.160
Maybe I had this happen to remind me that I can prioritize a metric, or I can prioritize inner peace, and the latter matters a hundred times more.
00:22:09.039 --> 00:22:16.160
Or maybe I learned this lesson so I could share it on this episode and help the person who needed this message.
00:22:16.880 --> 00:22:18.799

00:23:11.039 --> 00:23:19.519

And this is not just ideas.
00:23:21.440 --> 00:23:29.759
There are rewrite rituals, templates, embodied exercises, things that will actually turn this into real life change.
