Science Soul Success
In this episode, we connect mindset and self-care by treating recovery as a cognitive choice, not a luxury item you earn after you burn out. We break down the mental traps that delete rest first, then lay out simple shifts that help us protect our baseline under pressure.
Suite Spots
• self-care as recovery that requires the right cognitive frame
• mindset as an internal operating system that drives priorities under stress
• transactional mindset that ties worth to output and labels rest as laziness
• armor mindset that treats self-care as a reward and adds guilt to rest
• busyness culture and social proof that glorify exhaustion
• external validation loops from notifications that drown out internal signals
• misguided self-sacrifice that feels selfless but makes us ineffective
• reframing self-care as performance readiness and non-negotiable maintenance
• shifting to identity-based boundaries that protect sleep and energy
• noticing early burnout breadcrumbs and treating signals as data

00:01:03.840 --> 00:01:04.799
It is well.
00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:07.599
It is well with you, sweet spotters.
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:08.959
It is well with you.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:10.799
It is well with your health.
00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:13.200
It is well with your finances.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:15.359
It is well with your home.
00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:18.159
It is well with your family.
00:01:18.719 --> 00:01:22.400
It is well, it is well, it is well.
00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:26.000
It is well with your soul today.
00:01:26.239 --> 00:01:38.319
I just felt like saying that to you today, sweet spotters, because sometimes you have to declare it is well, regardless of what's going on outside of you.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:54.319
And you know, as I say that, as I say it is well, it is well, it is well, I am cultivating, promoting, and perpetuating a mindset.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:06.239
Yes, all month long, all year long, you and I have been in the mindset conversation.
00:02:06.799 --> 00:02:08.960
No matter what we've been facing.
00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:11.360
Mindset is behind it all.
00:02:11.919 --> 00:02:14.960
Mindset is what's driving the bus.
00:02:15.520 --> 00:02:16.960
We have a mindset.
00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:24.240
And today we're going to talk about how the mindset and self-care come together.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:27.759
Absolutely, there is a connection.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:34.240
There definitely is a connection between your mindset and self-care.
00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:40.879
When we talk about self-care, we typically talk about it as an action.
00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:48.319
A spa day, a workout, an extra hour of sleep, or stepping away from the cell phone.
00:02:48.479 --> 00:02:50.080
I speak to myself.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:57.759
But sweet spotter, self-care isn't really an action item alone.
00:02:58.400 --> 00:03:02.719
It's not just an action item on your to-do list.
00:03:03.199 --> 00:03:03.520
No.
00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:10.479
Self-care, I'm coming to understand, is an act of recovery.
00:03:11.039 --> 00:03:11.680
Yeah.
00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:17.439
And recovery requires the correct mindset.
00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:25.039
You've got to have the right cognitive frame to engage in self-care.
00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:27.360
To engage in recovery.
00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:33.360
You see, before we can fix our self-care habits, we've got to look at our mindset.
00:03:35.360 --> 00:03:37.360
And what is mindset really?
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:47.439
As we've been discussing on this topic that we've been spending so much so much time with, it's not just positive thinking.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:52.800
Mindset is that's a that's a 101 understanding of mindset, that it's positive thinking.
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:54.960
Oh, it's much more than that.
00:03:55.280 --> 00:04:11.919
By now, you know, if you've been if you've been listening here with us on the sweet spot, you know that the mindset that your mindset is the underlying internal operating system, the lens that you look through to make meaning of the world.
00:04:12.240 --> 00:04:33.120
You know that your mindset is the underlying internal operating system, the the set of assumptions, your beliefs, the core narratives that you have inside of you that all of us have inside of us, the core narratives that filter how we view ourselves.
00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:35.120
Yeah.
00:04:35.839 --> 00:04:43.040
Your core narratives filter how you view yourself, your worth, your capacity, who you are.
00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:49.120
It dictates what you prioritize when the pressure goes up.
00:04:49.920 --> 00:05:00.240
Your mindset, your operating system dictates what you prioritize when the pressure goes up.
00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:03.839
And here's the thing, sweet spotter.
00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:12.480
If we have the wrong mindset or the non-self-care mindset, we're gonna be sabotaged.
00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:17.600
The wrong mindset can actually sabotage your self-care.
00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:32.720
You see, when we're operating on the wrong code, when your operating system is running the wrong code, self-care is the very first thing that gets deleted.
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:38.000
There are a couple of mindsets I want to talk to you about today that I want you to be aware of.
00:05:38.079 --> 00:05:39.120
We need to be aware of these.
00:05:39.199 --> 00:05:41.040
The transactional mindset.
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:42.399
What is that?
00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:53.680
That is the kind of mindset that says, you know what, my belief, my worth is tied only to the output that I can deliver.
00:05:54.079 --> 00:06:04.319
If you believe your worth is tied only to output, to achievement, or serving others, self-care starts looking like laziness to you.
00:06:04.560 --> 00:06:10.160
You begin to think something's wrong with you if you have to care for yourself because you're just tied into helping others.
00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:14.000
You're just tied into your achievements, your goals, getting it done.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:18.399
You start thinking, I'll rest when everything is done.
00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:22.959
I heard somebody even say this to me once, I'll rest when I'm dead.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:23.680
Hmm.
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:25.519
That's interesting.
00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:31.519
Yeah, just this just sitting with that is is troubling.
00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:42.160
Undoubtedly, you will rest when you're dead, but uh don't push yourself to death, don't work yourself to death.
00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:55.279
You see, that's the trouble with high performance environments, the work is never done, and so when you get into the transactional mindset, you become a victim, a slave to it.
00:06:58.639 --> 00:07:01.199
What about the armor mindset?
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:03.519
That's another one I want you to think about.
00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:13.839
You see, there's a way that you can think about self-care that says, hey, that's a luxury, that's a kind of a reward.
00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:15.040
I have to earn that.
00:07:15.120 --> 00:07:17.920
I have I don't just get to do it, I have to earn it.
00:07:18.160 --> 00:07:29.040
You see, when you view self-care as luxury, as a luxury or a reward, you have to earn, quote unquote, after you burn out, then you're operating in a reaction mode.
00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:30.639
You have the armor mindset.
00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:38.879
You think that you have to wear this armor all the time, and therefore, self-care can only come after you've burned out.
00:07:39.519 --> 00:07:45.680
So when you have either a transactional mindset or an armor mindset, you know what the result is?
00:07:46.079 --> 00:07:51.920
You don't recharge, you you actually don't recharge, you just crash eventually.
00:07:52.319 --> 00:08:00.879
And when rest feels unearned, it comes with this heavy side order of what I call guilt.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:14.399
I've been guilty of that myself, where I feel as if if I rest, I'm guilty, and that true self-care has to be a reward for hard work.
00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:15.839
That's not true.
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:44.960
True self-care isn't a reward for hard work, it's the foundation that makes working hard possible, and I have to really spend time with that, and not just thinking that self-care is a reward for my hard work, but that it's the foundation that helps me to work with work hard, to really work hard, you know, and so that's something to think through, right?
00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:51.200
So your mindset could be the reason you're not getting self-care or you're not prioritizing it.
00:08:51.440 --> 00:08:55.120
You know what else can sabotage self-care or can work against it?
00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:56.080
Distractions.
00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:59.519
I see it all the time in high-performance environments.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:06.879
Why is it so hard to maintain a foundation that puts self-care first?
00:09:07.279 --> 00:09:08.080
You know why?
00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:18.639
The outside world is making it hard because the outside world is constantly conditioning and competing for your mind, for your mindset.
00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:20.559
Oh yeah.
00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:23.600
The city that never sleeps, that's where I am in.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:26.799
That's the slogan, right?
00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:29.360
So, what if you're in a city that never sleeps?
00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:31.519
What do you think is gonna happen to you?
00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:36.320
Yeah, there's the cult of busyness and social proof, right?
00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:40.480
We live in a culture that glorifies exhaustion.
00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:46.639
Being overcommitted is often worn like a badge of honor by some people.
00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:57.039
When everyone around us is running on fumes and the boundaries are like blurred and we're working 24-7 and we can't stop, that feels great, that looks good.
00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:00.720
You look like an Iron Woman, Iron Man, that kind of thing.
00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:10.639
And when you set boundaries, like you say something, well, I'm gonna go home and rest today, you feel like, oh my goodness, you're being a little weak.
00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:18.080
So there's that pressure that can work against self-care, the cult of busyness, the cult of social proof.
00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:23.200
I gotta prove that I'm strong, I don't need any rest, that kind of thing.
00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:31.600
So sometimes you have what's also called, I like to call this the external validation loops.
00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:42.000
You know, your cell phone, your watch, the notifications, the demands, the emails, the messaging that constantly pulls you forward.
00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:47.200
There's always another ping, another beep, another thing that has to get done.
00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:54.639
We get trained to react to everybody else's priorities, every notification while neglecting our own internal signals.
00:10:54.720 --> 00:11:00.639
We don't get any notifications from our own physiology or our own brain.
00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:03.200
Everything is coming to us from the outside.
00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:05.120
Goodness do I know that.
00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:11.120
How many times have I picked up my phone today and just looked at it because it either beeped or it buzzed, it vibrated?
00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:13.919
Ah heck, it doesn't even have to beep, buzz, or vibrate.
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.360
I just want to check it.
00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:18.000
And that's the problem.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.960
I'm in an external validation loop.
00:11:21.039 --> 00:11:22.960
I don't have internal signals anymore.
00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:31.440
I need the phone, I need the TV, the radio, or something else to give me a signal and tell me what's next.
00:11:32.639 --> 00:11:37.919
That can go against my self-care and perhaps yours too.
00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:40.639
How about this other one?
00:11:40.879 --> 00:11:43.120
Misguided self-sacrifice.
00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:51.519
So, uh Chris, I'm gonna start that over, and then there's misguided self-sacrifice.
00:11:52.559 --> 00:12:18.240
We absorb the false idea that prioritizing our own recovery means that we're taking away from our families, we're taking something away from the team or our clients, and that by taking care of ourselves, we are diminishing or hurting somebody else who could really use our help and could really use our time and our energy and our talents.
00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:19.919
How selfish.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:21.519
Right?
00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:30.559
There's a feeling like that, but running on an empty tank, sweet spotter, doesn't make you selfless.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:31.759
You know what it does?
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.159
It makes you ineffective.
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:46.240
It's only a matter of time before you burn out, or before you're giving less than you should, or maybe you even resent all that you are being pushed to do.
00:12:46.559 --> 00:12:47.519
But that's you.
00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:49.600
That's me, that's our mindset.
00:12:49.759 --> 00:12:53.919
Misguided self-sacrifice, false ideas appearing real.
00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:04.960
So, as we are talking about self-care, we talked about having the wrong mindset, sabotaging self-care.
00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:09.200
We talked about the transactional mindset, we talked about the armor mindset.
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:13.840
Then we talked about outside distractions that condition us against self-care.
00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:21.759
We just talked about the cult of busyness and social proof, we talked about external validation loops, you know, the notifications, that kind of stuff.
00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:29.759
We talked about misguided self-sacrifice, falling on the sword, you know, the idea that I can't care for me because I have to care for somebody else.
00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:38.159
How do we find our way back from the outside distractions, from the wrong sabotaging self-mindsets?
00:13:38.399 --> 00:13:41.519
Well, I have information for you today, sweet spotter.
00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:56.159
I am gonna give you three mindset shifts that could help you break out of these external traps that are set up for us and help us rebuild a self-care mindset.
00:13:56.799 --> 00:13:58.320
You know what it comes down to?
00:13:58.480 --> 00:13:59.919
You've got to be intentional.
00:14:00.159 --> 00:14:06.240
You've got to one, reframe self-care as a performance readiness indicator for yourself.
00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:10.639
Just reframe it as performance readiness.
00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:13.679
Self-care gets me ready.
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:20.960
Number two, shift from outcome-based to identity-based boundaries.
00:14:21.679 --> 00:14:32.879
Instead of saying I'll try to go to bed early if I finish my work, which is outcome-based, shift it to who you are.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:40.000
I am someone who protects my sleep so I can bring my best energy tomorrow.
00:14:40.320 --> 00:14:54.480
You see how that's different from saying I'll try to go to bed early tonight if I get all my work done and all of that, to look, I'm somebody who protects my sleep, my sleep architecture, so I can bring my best energy tomorrow, so I'm going to bed.
00:14:55.039 --> 00:14:57.039
Protect your baseline first.
00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:05.759
So that's what I call shifting from an outcome-based identity to an identity-based perspective.
00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:07.759
And I promised you three.
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:12.240
I I said that you have to reframe self-care as performance readiness.
00:15:12.480 --> 00:15:15.919
That means you have to stop viewing self-care as self-indulgence.
00:15:16.080 --> 00:15:18.799
View it as a non-negotiable maintenance.
00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:20.720
You don't skip physical recovery.
00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:25.200
Athletes don't skip physical recovery and expect to perform at an elite level.
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:29.919
The brain and the body require the same operational standard.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.559
Whatever you're gonna give to your body, you have to give to your mind and your brain.
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:36.480
So that's number one.
00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:40.639
Reframe self-care as a performance readiness indicator for you.
00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:46.080
Shift the outcome, shift from outcome-based to identity-based boundaries.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:51.840
I'm the kind of person who goes to bed early to protect my sleep so I can be the best, right?
00:15:52.080 --> 00:16:00.080
And number three, listen to the biometric and internal signals that are happening early.
00:16:00.240 --> 00:16:01.200
Listen to them early.
00:16:01.279 --> 00:16:03.360
What's happening inside of you early?
00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:06.559
When we burned out, that didn't happen overnight.
00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:11.360
When we feel so depleted, it didn't happen in one second or one day.
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:14.320
No, there it leaves breadcrumbs.
00:16:14.879 --> 00:16:20.159
You if you if you're burned out and you're so tired and you're exhausted, look for the breadcrumbs.
00:16:20.320 --> 00:16:29.919
Because bit by bit, day by day, every time we ignored our self-care, when we didn't pay attention to our self-care, we were stacking or dropping breadcrumbs.
00:16:30.159 --> 00:16:32.320
Pay attention to your early indicators.
00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:43.039
Where when you're irritable, when your sleep is low and you're not getting enough of it, when your brain feels a bit foggy, or you lack focus, those are breadcrumbs.
00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:47.840
When you get snappy with people, you get you're getting frosty with individuals.
00:16:49.279 --> 00:16:49.919
Right?
00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:59.440
You're cutting corners, you're negotiating with yourself, you're no longer working out, you're going for all the fast food, and you're not cooking any healthy foods.
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:02.960
Treat those signals as data.
00:17:03.600 --> 00:17:05.359
Actionable data.
00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:08.160
Don't just push through.
00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:10.240
Those are your early signals.
00:17:10.319 --> 00:17:12.400
That's your biometric.
00:17:12.480 --> 00:17:13.599
I call it biometric.
00:17:13.759 --> 00:17:15.200
I'm a doctor, I can't help myself.
00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:17.599
You know, they're they're internal signals.
00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:23.119
Okay, just let's listen to your signals, listen to your body, because your body keeps the score.
00:17:23.359 --> 00:17:24.480
Does that make sense?
00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:27.839
So we just reviewed Sweet Sparter, finding your way back.
00:17:28.160 --> 00:17:29.599
The three mindset shifts.
00:17:29.759 --> 00:17:34.400
One, reframe self-care as a performance readiness indicator for you.
00:17:35.119 --> 00:17:44.640
Two, shift from outcome-based to identity-based boundaries, and three, listen to your biometrics, listen to your internal signals early.
00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:50.799
Because, sweet spotter, you cannot give what you do not have.
00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:55.839
And you cannot pour from an empty cup.
00:17:56.720 --> 00:17:57.599
I love you.
00:17:58.079 --> 00:17:59.039
I really do.
00:17:59.759 --> 00:18:03.440
I care about you, and I want you to be well.
00:18:03.839 --> 00:18:06.000
That's why I made this podcast.
00:18:06.240 --> 00:18:14.400
So that we can slow down and think about mindset and how it helps or hurts our self-care.
00:18:14.559 --> 00:18:17.039
How do we reclaim our self-care?
00:18:18.559 --> 00:18:20.720
Yeah, how do we reclaim it?
00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:28.079
Because self-care is an act of recovery, and recovery requires the right cognitive frame.
00:18:28.640 --> 00:18:33.119
For science, for soul, and for success.
00:18:35.519 --> 00:18:38.400
This is the sweet spot.
00:18:38.960 --> 00:18:53.599
Remember, if you want to lead, to execute, and to show up at the highest level for the people in your life or on your team that depend on you, taking care of yourself.
00:18:53.839 --> 00:18:58.400
It is not optional, it is your primary responsibility.
00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:01.039
So look at your schedule today.
00:19:01.680 --> 00:19:09.680
Find one boundary you need to hold, or one habit of recovery you need to reclaim.
00:19:10.640 --> 00:19:18.160
One thing that you could do to show yourself that you care about you, even if that's looking in the mirror and saying I love you?
00:19:18.960 --> 00:19:25.359
And treat it with the exact same respect you would give your most important client or commitment.
00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:32.400
Until next time, protect your baseline, keep optimizing, and I'll see you in the sweet spot.
00:19:32.480 --> 00:19:32.960
