From Abuse, Addiction & Homelessness to Peace The Power of Breathwork

This powerful episode of Breaking Impossibilities dives deep into mental health, trauma healing, addiction recovery, grief, forgiveness, and the transformative power of breathwork.

At 74 years young, Ayo Handy-Kendi—Certified Breathologist, founder of Positive Energy Works, lifelong community organizer, and host of Sage and Baby Boomers and Those Who Love Us—shares her extraordinary real-life transformation. Ayo opens up about surviving childhood abuse, homelessness, substance addiction, the murder of her 17-year-old son, and the loss of three husbands, while carrying decades of suppressed pain she didn’t fully understand until later in life.

In this conversation, Ayo explains how trauma causes the body to hold the breath, how suppressed emotions live in the subconscious, and how intentional breathwork helped her release pain, stop drinking and drugging, forgive her abuser and her son’s killer, and reclaim peace of mind. We explore the connection between breathing, the brainstem, emotional regulation, mitochondria health, mental clarity, and healing trauma, as well as why so many people struggle with brain fog, stress, anxiety, and emotional shutdown without realizing their breath is the root.

This episode speaks directly to anyone navigating mental health challenges, addiction recovery, unresolved trauma, grief, spiritual healing, or self-belief, and serves as a reminder that it is never too late to heal, grow, and live fully. Ayo’s story is living proof that when we breathe better, we live better—and when we believe again, we break impossibilities.

🎧 Listen, breathe, heal, and remember: you are possible.
