From Courtside to Wisdom: Coach Craig Roden's Basketball Odyssey

WEBVTT
00:00:09.051 --> 00:00:09.952
ey everybody.
00:00:09.952 --> 00:00:13.657
Dr harde here at beyond the game podcast, thanks for tuning in.
00:00:13.657 --> 00:00:14.079
Today.
00:00:14.079 --> 00:00:19.032
I have a very special guest and good friend of mine, coach raig roden.
00:00:19.032 --> 00:00:21.320
Coach how you doing today, man man, it's great.
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:24.024
Any day you're on the coast, it's a great day all right.
00:00:24.024 --> 00:00:25.365
How about this weather we're having?
00:00:25.365 --> 00:00:26.928
Oh, it's awesome, isn't?
00:00:26.928 --> 00:00:33.765
It's good a little fall nip in the air out there, yeah, uh, you know, football is in full force.
00:00:33.765 --> 00:00:37.941
Yeah, and uh, it's great, it's good, it's a good day to be here, right?
00:00:37.960 --> 00:00:40.807
yes, yeah, coach, lives out here on the golf course.
00:00:40.807 --> 00:00:44.534
We're actually at his home right now, uh, recording this podcast, and his wife, uh, took us out back to to let us see they live on the golf course.
00:00:44.534 --> 00:00:53.344
We're actually at his home right now recording this podcast, and his wife took us out back to let us see they live on the 10th hole out here, and I'm going to tell you, man, we've got some great weather down here.
00:00:53.344 --> 00:00:54.328
It's real nice here.
00:00:54.328 --> 00:00:59.987
So anyway, coach, I've got a few questions for you that I think everybody wants to know and realize.
00:00:59.987 --> 00:01:10.540
You know, like we talked about earlier, we've got people who think you know, well, hall of fame basketball coach, my gosh, you know he probably doesn't do anything else besides coach basketball, right?
00:01:10.540 --> 00:01:14.048
However, like I said, we all go to the same grocery store, you know?
00:01:14.209 --> 00:01:22.409
yes, yeah, yes, I mean, it's just a normal life, uh, other than having a long career.
00:01:22.409 --> 00:01:25.134
I won't say it was a great career, but it was a long career.
00:01:25.213 --> 00:01:25.834
Long career.
00:01:25.834 --> 00:01:27.465
Yeah, no, I hear you, man.
00:01:27.465 --> 00:01:32.118
So to start out, man, let's talk about your Hall of Fame journey.
00:01:32.118 --> 00:01:42.108
What was the moment you realized you were on the path to becoming a Hall of Fame coach, or did you even realize that that was in your future, and how did it feel to have that type of recognition?
00:01:43.250 --> 00:01:45.894
To be honest with you, it never crossed my mind.
00:01:45.894 --> 00:01:52.141
Really it never.
00:01:52.141 --> 00:01:55.147
I never crossed it, never crossed my mind about being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
00:01:55.147 --> 00:02:06.993
The first time it really hit me, I got a call from where I'm born and raised, in Alabama, marshall County Hall of Fame, and they said they were going to put me in the Hall of Fame.
00:02:06.993 --> 00:02:11.550
And I was like, wow, did you run out of people to induct this year?
00:02:11.550 --> 00:02:18.340
But so you know, it's one of those things that you never really think about.
00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:26.581
But then you know, then the University of West Alabama, where I graduated from and coached, then they called and put me in their Hall of Fame.
00:02:26.581 --> 00:02:42.866
And you know, it's one of those things that you don't ever think about, you don't plan on, and once they do it, then you really, once you do it, once they do it, then it kind of hits you that wow, I did have a good career.
00:02:43.146 --> 00:02:44.830
Yeah, man, a long career.
00:02:44.830 --> 00:02:46.353
How long was your career in basketball?
00:02:46.353 --> 00:02:49.126
45 years 45 years.
00:02:49.145 --> 00:02:52.228
Wow, all at the collegiate level, 45 years.
00:02:52.620 --> 00:02:58.432
That's an honor, man, you know, even without being a Hall of Fame coach, my gosh, that's an honorable career.
00:02:58.432 --> 00:03:00.664
That's a long, long, good career.
00:03:00.664 --> 00:03:03.431
And so what schools were you at predominantly?
00:03:04.600 --> 00:03:09.305
Oh, we could probably go by saying which ones were you not at?
00:03:09.305 --> 00:03:12.792
Yeah, I've coached at all three levels.
00:03:12.792 --> 00:03:17.063
I've coached in junior college, uh, division two and division one.
00:03:17.063 --> 00:03:23.169
Um, so, uh, I was at.
00:03:23.169 --> 00:03:28.876
Uh, I started my career at Snead Junior College in Alabama.
00:03:29.097 --> 00:03:29.257
Yep.
00:03:30.502 --> 00:03:43.629
Right after I got my grad I did a graduate assistantship at Livingston University and then I got that and four years later they hired me back.
00:03:43.850 --> 00:03:44.431
Yeah, yeah.
00:03:44.780 --> 00:03:47.747
And so I was the head coach at what?
00:03:47.747 --> 00:03:55.432
24, 25 years old, wow and uh, you know, didn't have a clue, didn't have a clue of what I was doing.
00:03:55.432 --> 00:03:59.002
Right, just, this sounds right, this feels right, let's go.
00:03:59.002 --> 00:04:10.048
And uh, then, um, and then Brad Hovias was the athletic director at Delta State at that time, mm-hmm.
00:04:10.048 --> 00:04:15.390
And Brad took the athletic director's job at Texas, el Paso, yeah.
00:04:16.071 --> 00:04:23.495
And I'm sitting at home one night and he calls and he says I said oh, congratulations on your job.
00:04:23.495 --> 00:04:24.795
He said well, that's why I'm calling you.
00:04:24.795 --> 00:04:28.017
He said I've got to hire a women's coach.
00:04:28.017 --> 00:04:34.038
Would you be interested in coming out here?
00:04:34.038 --> 00:04:37.103
And you know I'm like can I drive?
00:04:37.103 --> 00:04:40.281
And he's like no, you've got to fly, right?
00:04:40.281 --> 00:04:42.185
So my first trip on an airplane.
00:04:42.185 --> 00:04:49.071
I was 26 or 7 years old and I was flying to El Paso to talk to him about that job.
00:04:49.071 --> 00:04:50.987
Well, he hired me and then.
00:04:50.987 --> 00:04:57.730
So I worked there a while and then I went to Connors Junior College in Oklahoma.
00:04:57.730 --> 00:05:03.547
From there, you know, people say well, you took a Division I job and you gave it up for a junior college.
00:05:03.547 --> 00:05:06.156
Well, you know, you've got to understand how long ago this was.
00:05:06.418 --> 00:05:06.579
Right.
00:05:06.901 --> 00:05:13.153
I mean I was head coach at Division I institution making $27,000.
00:05:14.262 --> 00:05:15.005
Big money right.
00:05:16.259 --> 00:05:32.327
And you know, connors offered me $32,000 and a house and my wife a twenty thousand dollar job there you go so it was like a no-brainer yeah, it was a win-win we hit the gold mine.
00:05:32.348 --> 00:05:48.536
So I went there, uh, and then, um, I went back to sneed junior college again and coached the men for three years and they cut the programs not out, but cut them back.
00:05:48.536 --> 00:06:07.581
And I went to Crowder College in Missouri for one year and we actually took a team that hadn't been to the national tournament in 17 years and we went to the national tournament and finished seventh.
00:06:07.581 --> 00:06:10.209
Wow, that's incredible.
00:06:10.290 --> 00:06:12.237
Then University of West Georgia.
00:06:12.237 --> 00:06:19.709
Ed Murphy was the athletic director at the University of West Georgia and he had hired me at West Alabama and I never got to work for him.
00:06:19.709 --> 00:06:21.939
He hired me, art Livingston.
00:06:21.939 --> 00:06:33.233
He hired me there and then he went to Delta State as a basketball coach and next thing, you know, he hired me back over there at West Georgia.
00:06:33.233 --> 00:06:35.187
I was there 14 years.
00:06:35.187 --> 00:06:43.168
I went to West Alabama and coached there for four years and then went to Delta State.
00:06:44.281 --> 00:06:48.321
So the whole total was 45 years, 45 years of coaching.
00:06:48.380 --> 00:06:52.711
I mean that that is seriously well, that says something about your mental state too.
00:06:53.641 --> 00:07:01.795
To stay at 45 years, all right right, um, but you know you were a mentor to a lot of people.
00:07:01.795 --> 00:07:05.290
You know not just your staff, but to the athletes that you coached.
00:07:05.290 --> 00:07:14.475
So, speaking of mentorship, you know who were some of your biggest influences in coaching and how did they shape your philosophy of the game.
00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:19.351
Well, I'd have to start with a guy named Harry Douglas.
00:07:19.351 --> 00:07:26.713
I was in junior high school at Claysville Junior High in Alabama and we hadn't really had a coach.
00:07:26.713 --> 00:07:32.790
We had a person who was in charge and they hired Harry.
00:07:32.790 --> 00:07:46.569
That's when I knew, I saw what he did to that school and to that program by instilling a little pride in it, doing some things.
00:07:46.569 --> 00:07:50.305
And, um, I knew then, seventh and eighth grade that I wanted to coach.
00:07:50.305 --> 00:07:58.687
Yeah, I liked the feeling of what he had done there and so, um, so harry got me started that way.
00:07:58.747 --> 00:08:03.192
And then, uh, john kitchens, at Snead Junior College.
00:08:03.192 --> 00:08:05.656
I was a manager for him.
00:08:05.656 --> 00:08:15.432
I wasn't a player by any means, so I was a manager for him and learned the game from a different perspective.
00:08:15.432 --> 00:08:33.349
And then I went to Livingston University and Ken Brackett was the head coach and I really, really learned a lot from Coach Brackett about organization and getting things done.
00:08:33.349 --> 00:08:36.433
Sure, and you know, rest his soul.
00:08:36.433 --> 00:08:39.243
He passed away from cancer at 38 years old.
00:08:39.243 --> 00:08:41.225
Oh my gosh, he's too young.
00:08:41.706 --> 00:08:51.750
And then ed murphy, who hired me back at west georgia, don haskins, when I was the head girls coach at texas, el paso.
00:08:51.750 --> 00:09:10.865
Don haskins, uh, influenced me a lot just getting to watch him and you know, being on that, uh, being on that floor, same floor with ed, and um, yeah, you know, um it was, it was, it was interesting and uh, sure.
00:09:10.865 --> 00:09:36.967
So those were really people that uh helped me formulate what I wanted to do as a coach, wanted to coach, made me want to coach and then formulate what I was gonna do yeah yeah, when I got there and then then there's some uh high school coaches uh that when I was just starting out, let me pick their brain, come to practice, ask questions, you know.
00:09:37.349 --> 00:09:38.772
Yeah, no, I totally get that.
00:09:38.772 --> 00:09:39.614
It's like this morning.
00:09:39.614 --> 00:09:51.871
You know, I was in surgery this morning and, uh, two of my mentors you know makes a huge difference whenever somebody's willing to mentor you, because then later on that carries over, right.
00:09:51.871 --> 00:09:53.442
So then I can mentor other people.
00:09:53.442 --> 00:10:08.284
And I tell you, this morning I was in surgery and Dr Brown and Dr Karpetskaya, two incredible surgeons here in South Mississippi, and Dr Brown pulled me aside and said, hey man, why don't you come over and watch this surgery?
00:10:08.284 --> 00:10:12.743
I think you'll find it pretty neat and it had been a surgery I hadn't seen before, you know.
00:10:12.743 --> 00:10:21.485
So it gives me an appreciation of what happened to that patient, how he's going to help that patient and, you know, next level steps right.
00:10:21.485 --> 00:10:38.173
So, like for you, you developed that vision early on and carried it over, and 45 years of coaching and mentorship I mean that's pretty incredible and I would be amiss if I did not mention these three high school coaches in alabama.
00:10:38.434 --> 00:10:40.359
Uh, coach qk.
00:10:40.359 --> 00:10:45.328
Dusty carter from scottsboro was a legend.
00:10:45.328 --> 00:10:51.250
He retired, he worked at the golf course and I could go to the golf course and just talk basketball with him.
00:10:51.250 --> 00:10:53.365
Sure, he allowed me to do that.
00:10:53.365 --> 00:11:05.451
Larry Windsor was at Guntersville High School at that time, absolutely the most organized coach I've ever seen or been around.
00:11:05.451 --> 00:11:10.590
I just gave up, I said I can't match his organizational skills.
00:11:10.590 --> 00:11:16.692
And then Terry Mitchell at Plainview was another coach that you know.
00:11:16.692 --> 00:11:21.172
Let me pick his brain and understand some things.
00:11:21.220 --> 00:11:22.561
And then you go on and you coach, understand some things.
00:11:22.561 --> 00:11:28.408
And then you go on and you coach and there's people who you coach against.
00:11:28.408 --> 00:11:34.173
That helps formulate what you're doing, because you know you get along there.
00:11:34.173 --> 00:11:37.581
You're feeling pretty good, I've got this, I've got this.
00:11:37.581 --> 00:11:45.442
And then you play some people that chew you up and you go wow, okay, chew you up.
00:11:45.442 --> 00:11:46.849
And you go wow, okay.
00:11:46.849 --> 00:11:51.850
And you know that was Wayne Bird at University of North Alabama was great.
00:11:51.850 --> 00:11:57.731
Lloyd Clark, who was at Delta State, was really good.
00:11:57.731 --> 00:12:13.893
And then you play against people like Randy Gibson who was at Northeastern Oklahoma when I was at Connor State and then Randy went on to Northeastern State in Tahlequah.
00:12:13.893 --> 00:12:29.293
Brian Agler was at Northeastern State in Tahlequah and then he went on with the Missouri-Kansas City and then he was a I don't know 10, 12, 15-year coach in the WNBA.
00:12:29.293 --> 00:12:32.167
Wow, and you know you're talking about.
00:12:32.299 --> 00:12:36.224
We've seen how that looks these days right, yeah, and you're talking about?
00:12:36.666 --> 00:12:38.312
You're talking about Randy and Brian.
00:12:38.312 --> 00:12:43.216
I mean, you're talking about absolutely the two best defensive coaches.
00:12:43.216 --> 00:12:50.654
I mean, if you weren't on top of what you were doing, they just shut it down and embarrassed you.
00:12:50.654 --> 00:13:04.346
So you learn to do some things with them do some things.
00:13:04.346 --> 00:13:04.907
Uh, yeah, yeah, with them.
00:13:04.907 --> 00:13:05.366
Right, you know.
00:13:05.366 --> 00:13:12.458
But so so not only you know the people that that trained you, the people that you were around and then people that you coached against.
00:13:12.458 --> 00:13:16.174
So it's really a three-phase uh thing yeah, yeah.
00:13:16.235 --> 00:13:22.933
So, needless to say, your coaching style definitely evolved, just like anything else would over over your 45-year career?
00:13:23.094 --> 00:13:24.638
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
00:13:24.638 --> 00:13:33.139
You know, it probably took 25 of those years to really settle in on what you were doing.
00:13:33.139 --> 00:13:42.229
Sure, and once you got that, then it I don't want to say it became easier, but it became more.
00:13:42.229 --> 00:13:50.758
You know, like Coach Haskins was one of the best visionaries I've ever been around.
00:13:50.758 --> 00:13:53.592
The game was so simple to me.
00:13:55.366 --> 00:14:04.912
I remember we were going to play, we were going to Alaska and play in the women's version of the Great Alaskan Shootout and we drew Old Dominion the first game.
00:14:04.912 --> 00:14:07.875
Well, that was when Old Dominion was Old Dominion.
00:14:07.875 --> 00:14:20.793
You know, they were top ten team in the country and I said, coach, could you watch some film with me and give me some pointers here?
00:14:20.793 --> 00:14:22.301
Because they were like 6'5", 6'5" and we were 6'5", 10".
00:14:22.301 --> 00:14:26.032
Some film with me and give me some pointers here, because they were like six, five, six, five and we were six foot, five, ten.
00:14:27.193 --> 00:14:28.134
And, uh, he goes.
00:14:28.134 --> 00:14:30.278
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, do this.
00:14:30.278 --> 00:14:31.807
This is how you got to handle that press.
00:14:31.807 --> 00:14:36.395
And then he's like and, and remember that I die.
00:14:36.395 --> 00:14:40.210
You know he said you're, you're one of your post players is really good outside.
00:14:40.210 --> 00:14:43.996
Invert them, make their bigs come outside before you shoot it.
00:14:43.996 --> 00:14:48.068
Sure, and I mean just stuff like that.
00:14:48.068 --> 00:15:11.735
I remember when he played LSU, UTEP played LSU in the region at University of Arizona and they drew LSU, and that was when they had Chris Jackson and Ricky Blanton and they were really good, yeah, yeah, and you know, the game was just simple to him.
00:15:11.735 --> 00:15:14.538
He just was like here's what you do boom, boom, boom, boom.
00:15:14.960 --> 00:15:15.201
Right.
00:15:15.225 --> 00:15:20.076
They execute that and they go out there and beat LSU by about 16 or 17.
00:15:20.557 --> 00:15:20.817
Wow.
00:15:20.817 --> 00:15:26.392
You know, See, and most people would go well, where's utep right?
00:15:26.392 --> 00:15:43.043
And then for those of you who don't know, I'm from texas, so it's funny whenever I come home from mississippi back to texas, and I pull in the great state of texas and there's a big old sign that says el paso 898 miles yeah, yeah, there's one out there somewhere in it that says tomorrow.
00:15:43.043 --> 00:15:43.585
Yeah.
00:15:45.128 --> 00:15:48.916
It says Houston X number El Paso tomorrow Tomorrow.
00:15:49.076 --> 00:15:49.938
Yeah, that's right.
00:15:49.938 --> 00:15:51.490
Yeah, big state, you know.
00:15:51.671 --> 00:15:52.333
That's funny.
00:15:52.333 --> 00:16:00.611
After I got out there, I realized that when you were in El Paso you were closer to San Diego than you were Dallas.
00:16:01.293 --> 00:16:01.975
It's crazy, isn't it?
00:16:01.975 --> 00:16:04.529
Yeah, I mean, you're basically Mexico.
00:16:04.529 --> 00:16:05.592
Yeah, you know?
00:16:05.592 --> 00:16:05.933
Yeah.
00:16:05.953 --> 00:16:06.335
That's right.
00:16:06.576 --> 00:16:12.565
Yeah, so about your coaching philosophy, let's talk a little bit about player development.
00:16:12.565 --> 00:16:20.557
What do you believe is the most important aspect of developing these young athletes, both on and off the field?
00:16:20.577 --> 00:16:24.465
developing these young athletes both on and off the field.
00:16:24.465 --> 00:16:28.929
Well, player development, and I really feel good about this.
00:16:28.929 --> 00:16:54.750
I had a coach that worked with me one time named Rodney Hampton, and Rodney had played for Don Meyer and we got together and we recognized that we needed better player development and so we put our heads together and Rodney kind of spearheaded it and we put all that together and it's a three-phase.
00:16:54.750 --> 00:17:23.439
Basically it's a three-phase process, one you've got to improve your skills, it's got to be, you know, and you know it's kind of like they say um, you know, we talk, we talk to our kids sometimes about you know, it's like it's like your drunk uncle at the family reunion everybody sits around and whispers about him but nobody does anything about it.
00:17:23.439 --> 00:17:24.200
Right, right.
00:17:24.200 --> 00:17:29.998
And you know, you've got to recognize there's a problem.
00:17:30.365 --> 00:17:31.565
Right right.
00:17:31.724 --> 00:17:33.270
You know the player has.
00:17:33.270 --> 00:17:40.556
I mean, as a coach you see what needs to be done, but there's a few players that you know some of them get better.
00:17:40.884 --> 00:17:41.986
But there's a few players that you know.
00:17:42.006 --> 00:17:52.936
Some of them get better, some of them turn the notch and get really, really good, and then some of them are the same player when they leave.
00:17:52.936 --> 00:17:56.580
Right, it's like a checking account, it's whatever you put into it.
00:17:56.580 --> 00:17:59.269
Absolutely it's what you can take out.
00:17:59.269 --> 00:18:04.807
Yeah, and so one, we think, think you got to improve your skills yeah and that's a.
00:18:05.647 --> 00:18:18.334
you know, skill development is so hard because it's a 25 to 28 day process to create new muscle memory.
00:18:18.334 --> 00:18:22.140
And so we go from there.
00:18:22.140 --> 00:18:24.912
It's a three-legged stool.
00:18:24.912 --> 00:18:26.329
That's what I ask the players.
00:18:26.329 --> 00:18:28.631
I tell them all the time it's a three-legged stool.
00:18:28.631 --> 00:18:31.152
You ever sit on a two-legged stool?
00:18:31.685 --> 00:18:32.691
Not very fun, is it?
00:18:32.691 --> 00:18:34.981
Especially if you're the drunk uncle.
00:18:35.103 --> 00:18:39.276
Yeah, if you've ever sat on a one-legged stool, nope, nope.
00:18:39.276 --> 00:18:45.027
You know a lot of balance comes in there, that's right.
00:18:45.027 --> 00:18:46.150
So it's a three-legged stool.
00:18:46.150 --> 00:19:01.369
It's skills, it's making your body physically better right that's something that really, as coaches, we don't have as much control over now, because you got professionals doing it strength conditioning coaches you know you think about coaches.
00:19:01.369 --> 00:19:11.132
You think about all the years you coached and how much you did before you had a strength coach.
00:19:11.444 --> 00:19:20.498
Yeah, outside of just coaching basketball, which is hard enough and probably how much we broke them down instead of you know just because.
00:19:20.498 --> 00:19:24.012
So you've got to have it.
00:19:24.012 --> 00:19:26.173
So the strength coaching is the biggest.
00:19:26.173 --> 00:19:31.096
That's the biggest change I've seen in athletics.
00:19:31.585 --> 00:19:33.028
Do you think it helps prevent injury?
00:19:33.028 --> 00:19:34.152
Oh yeah, no doubt.
00:19:34.152 --> 00:19:35.635
Absolutely and no doubt.
00:19:35.655 --> 00:19:35.856
I agree.
00:19:35.856 --> 00:19:44.571
Let's put it this way If I'd have ran into Brandon Harden 40 years ago, we would have had a lot less injuries.
00:19:44.785 --> 00:19:46.826
Well, you know what I can say.
00:19:46.826 --> 00:19:50.090
I honestly agree with you on that right you have to have.
00:19:50.090 --> 00:19:54.275
I had a talk with my brother about this the other day.
00:19:54.275 --> 00:20:01.660
He tore his ACL and I said you know, do you think that if you had a strength conditioning coach who wasn't your baseball coach, you would have had that injury?
00:20:01.660 --> 00:20:03.352
And I said you know, do you think that if you had a strength and conditioning coach who wasn't your baseball coach, you would have had that injury?
00:20:03.352 --> 00:20:04.749
And he said absolutely, not.
00:20:04.749 --> 00:20:06.394
No, absolutely, you know.
00:20:08.308 --> 00:20:15.492
Now we can't think about injuries and go backwards, right, we can't say, oh well, it wouldn't happen if this is, you know, but what is the likelihood of it?
00:20:15.492 --> 00:20:17.551
I think the likelihood is definitely a lot less.
00:20:17.551 --> 00:20:24.607
You know, there are coaches.
00:20:24.607 --> 00:20:26.414
And then there are coaches, yeah, you know, just like physicians.
00:20:26.414 --> 00:20:27.318
Physician, we're coaches, we're teachers.
00:20:27.318 --> 00:20:29.346
You know, we, we try and help people out all the time.
00:20:29.346 --> 00:20:32.583
You understand, hey, look, if you do this, this is what's going to happen.
00:20:32.583 --> 00:20:33.989
That's the same thing with you, you know.
00:20:33.989 --> 00:20:37.625
Hey, look, if you change this up a little bit, you can be an all-star.
00:20:37.785 --> 00:20:39.208
You know story on that.
00:20:39.208 --> 00:20:55.513
Yeah, uh, when I was at west West Georgia we had a trainer named Seth Lester a really good, really good guy and a good trainer and I stepped off a curb and rolled my ankle, oh yeah, and so you know, it swelled up.
00:20:55.513 --> 00:21:03.555
So he's got a couple of trainers assigned to me and they're putting that boot on that compression boot.
00:21:03.555 --> 00:21:09.509
And I asked him one day and I won't call by names here, but I asked him.
00:21:09.509 --> 00:21:20.836
I said why does when so-and-so puts it on, it feels magnificent, and why, when the other person puts it on, it hurts like heck?
00:21:20.836 --> 00:21:25.894
Right, and he goes why can some of your players make free throws and others can't?
00:21:25.894 --> 00:21:27.436
Hey, he says it's called talent.
00:21:27.596 --> 00:21:28.038
There you go.
00:21:28.038 --> 00:21:33.671
That's exactly right, man.
00:21:33.871 --> 00:21:34.713
No, I get that.
00:21:34.713 --> 00:21:46.237
And then the third phase of that is so you've got your skill development, you've got your physical development, and then you've got to have the mental development.
00:21:46.237 --> 00:21:52.646
You've got to understand where all of this is going Sure and where it takes you and you have.
00:21:53.107 --> 00:21:57.898
well, when you coached, we didn't have all this NIL junk we have today.
00:21:57.898 --> 00:22:00.174
But when you coached, you had four years to develop that player.
00:22:00.174 --> 00:22:00.636
Yes, junk we have today.
00:22:00.636 --> 00:22:01.903
But when you coached you had four years to develop that player.
00:22:01.903 --> 00:22:16.428
Yes, you know, now you may have one year, maybe, maybe, maybe not even that, before they're like oh, you know, I'm out of here and I think that is 100 changing the way one athletes perceive the game, but two coaches perceive the game.
00:22:16.428 --> 00:22:18.576
You know, I, I don't know what.
00:22:18.576 --> 00:22:19.157
What is your?
00:22:19.157 --> 00:22:20.624
What are your feels about nil?
00:22:20.624 --> 00:22:23.974
How do you think that would have been 45 years ago like it is today?
00:22:24.366 --> 00:22:28.470
It wouldn't have been under the same guidelines they would have 45 years ago.
00:22:28.470 --> 00:22:34.653
You had coaches, your administrators were coaches.
00:22:34.873 --> 00:22:35.034
Yeah.
00:22:35.964 --> 00:22:40.276
And they would have never let it get to the point that it is now.
00:22:40.276 --> 00:22:47.669
I agree have never let it got to the point that it is now.
00:22:47.669 --> 00:22:48.069
I agree it's um.
00:22:48.089 --> 00:22:49.534
Basically it's glorified travel ball.
00:22:49.554 --> 00:22:53.424
Now I mean, let's face it right too but I mean, I've I've said that all my coaching career.
00:22:53.424 --> 00:23:05.626
You know, yeah, and and don't get me wrong there's some good travel ball coaches out there, sure, but I'm gonna say over, well over 50% are in it for their self.
00:23:05.626 --> 00:23:13.086
Yeah, they're not in it for the kids, and so you know, they play here.
00:23:13.086 --> 00:23:19.490
They didn't get to play as many times they can get a shoot as many times, so they go over here and play for this other team.
00:23:19.490 --> 00:23:32.836
There's no, it's taken the that and then the nil has taken the uh, uh, oh, what's the word you use?
00:23:32.836 --> 00:23:39.209
Uh, when you're committed, it's taken the commitment out of it sure you know.
00:23:39.529 --> 00:23:40.230
Yeah, I had, yeah, I had.
00:23:40.230 --> 00:23:49.035
Last week I had a retired player from the San Francisco 49ers and he said some of the same things you're saying to me now.
00:23:49.035 --> 00:23:52.759
You know NIL has 100% changed the game, Right.
00:23:53.701 --> 00:23:54.325
It has changed the game.
00:23:54.325 --> 00:24:04.016
I didn't have to deal with that I retired before that but I did coach through COVID and covid was a game changer too.
00:24:04.016 --> 00:24:06.307
Trying times huh, it was.
00:24:06.307 --> 00:24:07.048
That was tough.
00:24:07.048 --> 00:24:09.854
It was tough, yeah yeah we should have.
00:24:10.115 --> 00:24:23.951
as coaches, we all wanted to play, but we actually should have just shut it down, not played, let the kids have a year to go to school, practice and be done with it and then started back over.
00:24:23.951 --> 00:24:26.333
But we fought through it.
00:24:26.333 --> 00:24:35.237
And then COVID you know all the COVID regulations, the extra years of play because of COVID, this and that.
00:24:35.237 --> 00:24:42.135
Right, I think it gave the NIL its impetus to.
00:24:43.198 --> 00:24:43.597
Fueled it.
00:24:43.959 --> 00:24:44.118
Yeah.
00:24:44.444 --> 00:24:47.295
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, which it did a lot of things right.
00:24:47.295 --> 00:24:52.136
So what about your legacy, coach?
00:24:52.136 --> 00:24:56.276
What do you hope that your legacy is in the world of basketball?
00:24:56.276 --> 00:25:00.175
I know you couldn't believe that you were a Hall of Fame basketball coach and you're a humble guy.
00:25:00.175 --> 00:25:04.297
What do you want to leave for everybody here who listens to this and beyond?
00:25:05.085 --> 00:25:08.525
You know I don't know about a legacy.
00:25:08.525 --> 00:25:15.739
I don't think I did anything that was legacy worthy.
00:25:15.739 --> 00:25:22.932
You know, I always felt like it was about the kids, sure, and we wanted to take care of the kids.
00:25:22.932 --> 00:25:32.173
I think that's a legacy right there man and most of the players that have played for me, especially the ones that finished their career.
00:25:32.173 --> 00:25:41.632
We still keep in touch and that, to me, is worth more, you know.
00:25:42.272 --> 00:25:42.733
Well, that's your.
00:25:42.733 --> 00:25:43.315
Is worth more.
00:25:43.315 --> 00:25:44.817
Well, that's your legacy.
00:25:44.817 --> 00:25:45.417
Right there, absolutely.
00:25:45.438 --> 00:25:52.751
If that's a legacy, sure, they're going to tell their kids about you, their grandkids about you.
00:25:52.751 --> 00:25:54.517
We had a great graduation rate at some places.
00:25:54.517 --> 00:25:58.310
I remember at West Georgia.
00:25:58.310 --> 00:25:59.736
I was there 14 years.
00:25:59.736 --> 00:26:03.953
These coaches go up and say, well, all of my kids have graduated?
00:26:03.953 --> 00:26:04.695
No, they haven't.
00:26:04.695 --> 00:26:11.651
You know, like I had two kids, I can tell you this.
00:26:12.884 --> 00:26:14.987
At West Georgia we had kids that were.
00:26:14.987 --> 00:26:17.989
We only counted the ones that stayed the full four years with us, or two years or whatever they were.
00:26:17.989 --> 00:26:23.354
We only counted the ones that stayed the full four years with us, or two years or whatever they were.
00:26:23.354 --> 00:26:30.359
Yeah, we had 38 kids come through Mm-hmm.
00:26:30.359 --> 00:26:34.365
32 of them graduated Mm-hmm.
00:26:34.365 --> 00:26:41.976
And we went one step further 17 of those 32 were first-time college grads in their family.
00:26:41.976 --> 00:26:43.278
That's impressive.
00:26:43.278 --> 00:26:44.990
That is impressive.
00:26:45.285 --> 00:26:47.251
So, and people say, what did you do?
00:26:47.251 --> 00:26:48.134
We didn't do anything.
00:26:48.134 --> 00:26:49.799
We just tried to treat them right.
00:26:49.799 --> 00:26:56.413
You coached them, make sure that they understood Right, and you know so.
00:26:56.413 --> 00:27:05.356
We had two players that went on overseas and didn't finish their degree.
00:27:05.356 --> 00:27:15.453
We had I mean so, and it's been that way pretty much everywhere I mean we've had a big graduation rate.
00:27:15.453 --> 00:27:33.297
You know we weren't high on promoting that because I told the kids it's what you're supposed to do, it's what you come to college for and I was always big on you know you don't pat yourself on the back.
00:27:33.297 --> 00:27:36.595
You don't pat people on the back for doing what they're supposed to do.
00:27:36.595 --> 00:27:39.592
It's when they go that extra.
00:27:39.592 --> 00:27:50.412
You know that's right mile that's right, that's exactly right that you're really proud of.
00:27:52.520 --> 00:27:58.557
But anyhow, that's, if that's a legacy, that's a legacy, sure it is.
00:27:58.557 --> 00:28:08.357
As far as being a game changer, no, there was no game changing, because everything we did we stole from somebody else over the years.
00:28:08.357 --> 00:28:12.333
Well, because what works works right.
00:28:12.333 --> 00:28:13.375
I've got a notebook.
00:28:13.375 --> 00:28:20.333
I've got a notebook that's been kept for 45 years yeah yeah, and stuff would be in there.
00:28:21.233 --> 00:28:28.105
And you know, later on in my career there would be times where you'd say, okay, this team is doing this Now.
00:28:28.105 --> 00:28:36.984
Years ago we played against that and hold on, hold on, I'll bring it in tomorrow.
00:28:36.984 --> 00:28:37.847
We're not going to.
00:28:37.847 --> 00:28:40.829
You know, I tell the assistant coaches we're not going to talk about it right now.
00:28:40.829 --> 00:28:41.606
I know I got it.
00:28:41.606 --> 00:28:48.993
So I'd go home and I'd look through it and I'd say, okay, here's what we're going to do, right, right, yeah, you know because it worked.
00:28:49.634 --> 00:28:51.705
I think we'd be remiss if we didn't think that.
00:28:51.705 --> 00:28:57.259
You know the late, great, amazing coach nick saving?
00:28:57.259 --> 00:28:59.505
You know he's now a commentator.
00:28:59.505 --> 00:29:03.554
Do we think that other people have stolen some of his plays?
00:29:03.554 --> 00:29:05.738
Absolutely, man, you do what works right.
00:29:05.738 --> 00:29:07.290
Yeah, and then you may change it up a little bit.
00:29:07.632 --> 00:29:07.972
Yeah.
00:29:09.046 --> 00:29:10.348
There's playbooks for everything.
00:29:10.348 --> 00:29:11.952
We know that, you know.
00:29:12.134 --> 00:29:24.510
Ain't, no doubt Ain't no doubt it's you know, and I always felt, I always approached it that you know and I told I used to tell the kids this and I've had coaches disagree with me.
00:29:24.510 --> 00:29:36.467
I used to tell the kids, once we tip that ball up, as a head coach I do not make the difference in maybe two or three games a year.
00:29:36.467 --> 00:29:43.880
Where I make a difference is having you prepared going into that game.
00:29:43.880 --> 00:29:47.595
If I've got you prepared, you really don't even need me on the sideline.
00:29:47.595 --> 00:29:51.349
Sure, because you know what you're going to do, you know what they're going to do.
00:29:51.349 --> 00:29:53.813
You can make your own adjustments.
00:29:53.813 --> 00:29:56.671
Now that's influential, absolutely.
00:29:56.692 --> 00:30:03.438
Things like that, but I never really felt like you know that I had a lot.
00:30:04.586 --> 00:30:05.689
That's what practice is for.
00:30:05.689 --> 00:30:07.053
That's what player development is for.
00:30:07.053 --> 00:30:09.188
That's why you hire assistant coaches.
00:30:09.188 --> 00:30:10.571
It's team effort, right?
00:30:10.571 --> 00:30:12.455
Yeah, absolutely no, I love that.
00:30:12.455 --> 00:30:15.269
So let's talk about life after coaching man.
00:30:15.269 --> 00:30:18.537
So life beyond the game right, that's what we're here, right?
00:30:18.537 --> 00:30:21.814
Current endeavors let's just talk about that.
00:30:21.814 --> 00:30:29.307
What has life looked like for you since retiring from coaching, and what new passions have you pursued or are you pursuing?
00:30:29.847 --> 00:30:32.092
Well, let's just start with this.
00:30:32.092 --> 00:30:39.262
I came out and really I had no plan.
00:30:39.262 --> 00:30:40.769
Yeah, I just retired.
00:30:40.769 --> 00:30:42.454
Yeah, I just walked away.
00:30:42.454 --> 00:30:44.173
We moved to the coast.
00:30:44.173 --> 00:30:57.585
We moved to the coast, I just walked away, and the first three or four months it was awesome, Because see the last 20 years, what people don't realize.
00:30:57.585 --> 00:31:01.615
The last 20 years we practiced at 5.30 every morning before school.
00:31:01.615 --> 00:31:06.532
That was a selling point for parents sending their daughters there.
00:31:06.532 --> 00:31:10.045
They weren't going to be out running those roads at night.
00:31:13.153 --> 00:31:16.009
Right, 5.30 comes early, right, yeah, absolutely.
00:31:17.002 --> 00:31:26.069
And so we did that, and so I don't know, it's just, it's really odd.
00:31:26.069 --> 00:31:33.241
So it felt so good to get up when I wanted to, but I'm still.
00:31:33.241 --> 00:31:41.414
I still can't if I sleep till 6.30, I'm sleeping in Creature habit, I'm sleeping in.
00:31:41.414 --> 00:31:43.326
I felt like boy.
00:31:43.326 --> 00:31:44.088
I must have been tired.
00:31:44.088 --> 00:31:52.113
I slept till 6.30 this morning, right, so I'm getting better at that, but that was great.
00:31:52.113 --> 00:32:04.481
And then I became bored.
00:32:04.481 --> 00:32:06.884
I became bored, um, my body, you know, started felt like it was falling apart.
00:32:06.884 --> 00:32:11.150
Uh, that's when I met you yeah, my knees, my knees.
00:32:11.390 --> 00:32:20.367
You know, I can't say enough thanks to you, because I came to you thinking I was gonna have to have knee replacement surgery.
00:32:20.367 --> 00:32:30.910
Yeah, my knees hurt so bad, yeah, and you looked at them and said well, there's nothing structurally wrong with it, but your quads are extremely tight.
00:32:30.910 --> 00:32:48.585
Yeah, and people, let me tell you this, especially you older people out there if you think you've got some problem that you're saying with old age, you think it's because of old age.
00:32:48.585 --> 00:32:52.602
Go see Dr Harden, there's your plug right there.
00:32:52.602 --> 00:33:12.430
Because he, you know, oh, man, when you first got on my knees I was going to, you know, I could have screamed out, cursed me in your head oh, if he hadn't been on both knees, I could have kicked him with one leg.
00:33:12.430 --> 00:33:14.422
That's how bad they are.
00:33:14.422 --> 00:33:16.685
We get in there and we get it done, don't we?
00:33:16.685 --> 00:33:19.932
But they that went away, um, you know.
00:33:19.932 --> 00:33:21.401
And so what have I done?
00:33:21.401 --> 00:33:24.929
I mean, I've, uh, I'm trying to find stuff to fill my time.
00:33:25.289 --> 00:33:35.324
You know sure I worked for the bluxy shuckers the last two summers I'm doing that again gives me, just gives me something to do sure, yeah, absolutely.
00:33:35.324 --> 00:33:37.608
I refereed volleyball this year.
00:33:37.608 --> 00:33:47.670
Uh, my experience and knowledge of volleyball was I've been to a few volleyball matches, sure, there you go and then you can do it.
00:33:48.311 --> 00:33:53.131
That's good so I had some really good tutors in that this year.
00:33:53.131 --> 00:33:53.832
That's helped.
00:33:53.832 --> 00:33:56.446
I plan on doing that again.
00:33:56.446 --> 00:34:01.231
And then a good friend of mine, kylie Hill.
00:34:01.231 --> 00:34:08.927
I coached against him 18 or 19 years when I was at West Georgia and he was at Valdosta.
00:34:08.927 --> 00:34:19.010
He just became the head coach at Ouachita Baptist in Arkansas and I'm doing some consulting work.
00:34:19.010 --> 00:34:28.210
I don't know if it's consulting, I think he just felt sorry for me and felt like I was sitting around here and he gave me a little bit of stuff to do.
00:34:28.210 --> 00:34:40.108
All right, and you know it's all breaking down film and stuff sure so it keeps my mind going sure so I'm really, I'm really feeling good now.
00:34:40.208 --> 00:34:46.306
But uh, the first, after the first four or five months, it was bad, it was bad and then uh.
00:34:46.306 --> 00:34:55.204
So now I've got a plan yeah, you have to have a plan, right I didn't have a coaching, I didn't have a plan, I just quit, yeah walked away.
00:34:56.264 --> 00:34:58.068
Said 5, 30 in the mornings were enough.
00:34:58.409 --> 00:35:03.521
Yes, yes, so there we go so okay.
00:35:04.684 --> 00:35:06.907
So what about future aspirations?
00:35:06.907 --> 00:35:09.432
You have any future aspirations, projects, goals.
00:35:09.432 --> 00:35:11.329
I know you said you're going to work for the shuckers.
00:35:11.329 --> 00:35:12.739
What else have you been doing?
00:35:12.800 --> 00:35:14.887
I'm on referee volleyball again next year.
00:35:15.047 --> 00:35:15.248
Yeah.
00:35:15.880 --> 00:35:24.974
And you know, if Coach Hill wants me to continue, I probably will.
00:35:26.623 --> 00:35:33.088
He may tell me it's passed you up, son, that's all right right.
00:35:35.402 --> 00:35:41.152
Yeah, but so that's my plan and just live a good life and hope that.
00:35:41.152 --> 00:36:04.652
You know, at one time, really, on this retirement thing, I was sitting there one day, right before I retired and I was thinking, you know, if a guy lives I was 65 then and I was like you know, if a guy lives to be 80 and he lives pretty much he's been lucky.
00:36:04.652 --> 00:36:18.764
You know he's 80, he's had very little physical ailments or health issues he's lived a dang good life, absolutely A dang good life.
00:36:18.764 --> 00:36:19.507
You bet.
00:36:19.507 --> 00:36:23.510
And then the next thing was wow, you just got 15 years left.
00:36:24.900 --> 00:36:27.989
Well, you know, it's realism, right?
00:36:27.989 --> 00:36:28.710
We all age.
00:36:30.885 --> 00:36:34.211
But that really put the wheels in motion, about sure.
00:36:34.211 --> 00:36:36.702
Why do you want to do this to your 70 or 72?
00:36:36.702 --> 00:36:39.487
Why not get out and enjoy it?
00:36:39.487 --> 00:36:47.043
Yeah, sure you know, my, my wife is great uh she, she is great.
00:36:47.083 --> 00:36:48.144
I have to attest to that.
00:36:48.144 --> 00:36:50.748
Yeah, we love her yeah, she's uh.
00:36:51.228 --> 00:37:15.141
Well, what she, what she did all those years is ran everything well, sure, but she's team mom man, but she likes that yeah, not, not, not so much a team mom, she just likes running everything type a personality, there you go yeah and so, uh, but I mean, she took care of the house, she took care of the house, she took care of everything On top of that.
00:37:15.161 --> 00:37:29.829
Her dad lived with us for eight years, so she was a caregiver, sure, but I didn't have to worry about paying bills, I didn't have to worry about getting a plumber, I didn't have to worry about any of that stuff, I just coached.
00:37:29.829 --> 00:37:35.291
Yeah, yeah, and it's because of her yeah, absolutely so.
00:37:35.960 --> 00:37:41.592
See, and that's another thing you know about, about teamwork, it's it starts, it's ground level.
00:37:41.592 --> 00:37:43.103
Yeah, it's ground level.
00:37:43.103 --> 00:37:48.501
You know, I have to tell everybody, you know, coach roden's wife, she is an incredible person.
00:37:48.501 --> 00:37:53.480
Uh, if you ever want to catch her, she's on the golf course every single day, y'all.
00:37:53.480 --> 00:37:56.668
And if she's not, she's either sick or she has something better to do.
00:37:56.668 --> 00:38:03.244
And I guarantee you that something better to do has to do with her family, because I'm telling you she's the most active person I know.
00:38:03.244 --> 00:38:07.559
But anyway, coach, well, let's leave everybody with some final thoughts.
00:38:07.559 --> 00:38:13.322
If you could share one message with young athletes today, what would that be If you could share?
00:38:13.362 --> 00:38:14.344
one message with young athletes today.
00:38:14.344 --> 00:38:14.724
What would that be?
00:38:14.724 --> 00:38:19.972
Pay attention to the people that's been there before you.
00:38:19.972 --> 00:38:38.108
Absolutely, I love that Pay attention to the people that's been there before you, Because right now, right now we're in a time where a lot of the 18, 19, 20-year-olds they've got all the answers.
00:38:38.869 --> 00:38:39.630
Yeah yeah.
00:38:40.431 --> 00:38:44.532
You're right, and they really don't, but they think they do.
00:38:44.532 --> 00:38:53.782
And you know, just pay attention, pay attention to your coaches.
00:38:53.782 --> 00:38:58.543
You know one thing I used to tell the team every year in the fall is the new ones.
00:38:58.543 --> 00:39:02.150
I'd say you know, there's a hundred ways to play the game.
00:39:02.150 --> 00:39:06.809
You can play it fast, you can play it slow, you can play it inside, you can play it outside.
00:39:06.809 --> 00:39:09.367
Whatever, there's a thousand ways to play it.
00:39:09.367 --> 00:39:11.405
Yeah, what's the best way to play it?
00:39:11.405 --> 00:39:19.545
Sure, and some of them would go well, you need to press, or you need to play it fast, or you need to do this.
00:39:19.545 --> 00:39:22.431
I said, the best way you can play it is the way your coach wants it played right now.
00:39:22.652 --> 00:39:24.014
Yeah.
00:39:24.054 --> 00:39:24.675
Be coachable.
00:39:24.675 --> 00:39:47.469
If you move to the next level and it's a completely different system do it the way the next coach wants it, as long as everybody is doing it, or as long as everybody's pulling that wagon down the road, you may run in the ditch, but you'll get it out of the ditch and you'll keep going.
00:39:47.469 --> 00:39:50.228
It's when people are pulling it down the road.
00:39:50.228 --> 00:39:52.050
People are trying to pull it to the side.
00:39:52.454 --> 00:39:53.380
Uphill and downhill right.
00:39:54.262 --> 00:39:57.525
You just get stagnant, that's right and you can't be.
00:39:57.525 --> 00:40:09.067
And if I had anything to tell the young coaches, I would tell them take advantage of your older coaches, the older coaches out there.
00:40:09.067 --> 00:40:10.237
Right, right, yeah, absolutely.
00:40:10.360 --> 00:40:16.293
Go talk to them about how they did this or how they did that.
00:40:16.293 --> 00:40:21.827
Sure, you know, and that was one thing in COVID, nobody had ever been through anything like that.
00:40:21.827 --> 00:40:32.253
So there was nobody you could talk to, no structure there To say, hey, what did y'all do when that hit 20 years ago, right, I mean?
00:40:32.253 --> 00:40:34.659
I mean, who would have thought right?
00:40:34.659 --> 00:40:36.461
So I mean it's all about.
00:40:36.461 --> 00:40:49.396
You know, I was taught at an early age to give your older coaches respect that their years in time have earned.
00:40:49.735 --> 00:40:51.420
Yeah, absolutely, and.
00:40:52.483 --> 00:40:54.570
I'll tell you, I'll give you a quote, leaving here.
00:40:54.570 --> 00:41:02.489
I'll give you a quote that my dad told me when he found out I was going to coach, right after we talked about Harry Douglas.
00:41:02.489 --> 00:41:04.565
You know, I told him.
00:41:04.565 --> 00:41:06.010
I said I want to coach, sure.
00:41:06.010 --> 00:41:09.409
And he said well, son, it's a good profession.
00:41:09.409 --> 00:41:13.809
You know you won't ever get rich, but it's a good, solid profession.
00:41:13.809 --> 00:41:17.663
And you know, on and on, and he goes.
00:41:17.663 --> 00:41:19.351
Let me tell you something.
00:41:19.351 --> 00:41:20.880
I said what's that?
00:41:20.880 --> 00:41:26.813
He said as long as you treat those kids like a coon dog, you'll be okay.
00:41:26.813 --> 00:41:37.621
And this is a guy with no college education, right, and coon dog, you know.
00:41:37.621 --> 00:41:38.682
You know I'm going where is this going?
00:41:38.682 --> 00:41:39.284
Right, and he goes.
00:41:39.284 --> 00:41:44.574
You know you can coach them hard, you can coach them tough.
00:41:44.574 --> 00:41:48.188
That's what you should do, you.
00:41:48.188 --> 00:41:49.411
You should train them hard.
00:41:49.411 --> 00:41:52.065
I mean, that's what you have to do with a coon dog.
00:41:52.065 --> 00:41:53.630
You have to train that coon dog hard.
00:41:53.630 --> 00:41:58.668
But if you ever break their spirit, they won't ever tree for you.
00:41:58.668 --> 00:41:59.931
That's right, man.
00:42:00.552 --> 00:42:03.226
That's right, that's exactly right.
00:42:03.226 --> 00:42:14.623
That stuck with me for probably 55 years in my head and that goes with anything and anybody right.
00:42:14.623 --> 00:42:16.889
Yes, it's trust, it's a trust.
00:42:16.889 --> 00:42:18.632
Yeah, be coachable.
00:42:18.632 --> 00:42:20.887
Trust your surroundings.
00:42:20.887 --> 00:42:27.610
Don't get too comfortable right, because if you become complacent you can't grow Right and have fun.
00:42:27.610 --> 00:42:32.365
It's all about have fun and drive that passion forward.
00:42:32.545 --> 00:42:48.474
I've told some of our former players, a couple of our real good former players, that the one thing I wish I had done when they played was smell the roses.
00:42:48.954 --> 00:42:49.155
Yeah.
00:42:49.480 --> 00:42:53.351
And sit back and enjoy having them there, because I didn't.
00:42:53.710 --> 00:42:53.952
Yeah.
00:42:53.952 --> 00:42:59.268
And now you realize, Because back then you would think this is work yes.
00:42:59.621 --> 00:43:01.025
Yes, yes, absolutely.
00:43:01.347 --> 00:43:04.760
Yeah, no, I totally understand that.
00:43:04.820 --> 00:43:09.047
It's like my oldest son says and both of my sons have become successful.
00:43:10.090 --> 00:43:12.909
Yeah, we're going to have your youngest son here on the podcast.
00:43:12.909 --> 00:43:18.733
Guys, I have to tell you he's got a son who's a USA Olympic athlete.
00:43:18.733 --> 00:43:21.889
He's incredible named Andrew Roden.
00:43:21.889 --> 00:43:26.809
He's actually brought sumo to the state of Alabama and I have to tell you, guys, it's an incredible guy.
00:43:26.809 --> 00:43:28.762
I was once on the police force.
00:43:28.762 --> 00:43:29.684
He's in the police force.
00:43:29.684 --> 00:43:30.565
We have that in common.
00:43:30.565 --> 00:43:44.320
When I met Andrew, he signed this picture and sent it to me and I thought Sumo and the state of Alabama Now what in the hell?
00:43:44.320 --> 00:43:45.362
And he's one of the coolest guys I know.
00:43:45.362 --> 00:43:49.047
He's working on his PhD right now and, coach, I'd say that's another legacy you leave.
00:43:49.047 --> 00:43:51.811
Right, there is your children.
00:43:51.811 --> 00:44:04.315
You have such an incredible family man and I know everybody around you, as humble as you are, sees the great man that you are and sees what kind of legacy you leave today.
00:44:04.315 --> 00:44:08.050
And I have to say you've done a really fine job for yourself sir.
00:44:08.320 --> 00:44:13.793
Well, both of them, and our daughter too, have done well for themselves.
00:44:13.793 --> 00:44:17.166
They're gainfully employed, they're good citizens.
00:44:17.166 --> 00:44:19.695
I'll say that, yeah, yeah.
00:44:19.695 --> 00:44:41.331
But my oldest one, you know, he's general manager of an excavation firm and you know we've had this conversation because he's got a nine year old son and I will say well, come here to big Papa, which is what they call me, and let me, let me say this.
00:44:41.331 --> 00:44:45.887
And he goes oh Jesus, dad, I never got that, I never got that talk.
00:44:45.887 --> 00:44:48.414
I go well, I liked him better.
00:44:48.414 --> 00:44:49.762
Right, Right yeah.
00:44:49.822 --> 00:44:50.585
It's like my dad.
00:44:50.585 --> 00:45:06.313
You know it's funny when everybody says, oh, he's pulled one of your brothers aside and I have a lot of brothers and they can attest listening to this right now my dad would go and you just see his mouth moving and everybody would go oh, braden's getting a lecture, here we go, you're next Watch out.
00:45:06.313 --> 00:45:15.025
You know that's funny, yeah, and you know now the grandkids get it.
00:45:15.025 --> 00:45:15.547
So, yeah, it's, it's funny.
