TENTANG EPISODE INI
What changes when you discover the history behind your own identity?
In Episode 75: Behind the Pages, The Journey to Pan-Garifuna Afro-Latino Power of Pride, host José Francisco Ávila takes listeners behind the pages of Pan-Garifuna Afro-Latino Power of Pride: My Quest for Racial, Ancestral, Ethnic and Cultural Identity.
From childhood in Honduras to encounters with racial assumptions in Boston and Dallas, Ávila traces the questions that inspired his search for belonging. He shares how family conversations, his brother Tomás’s genealogical research, and learning about his Garifuna ancestors transformed his understanding of himself—and strengthened his commitment to community advocacy.
Discover the writers, music, and movements that influenced his thinking, and how a yearlong writing sabbatical during the COVID-19 pandemic helped him shape decades of experience into a memoir.
Marking the book’s fifth anniversary, this personal episode explores the responsibility of telling family stories, preserving cultural memory, and passing ancestral knowledge to future generations.
What story in your family is waiting to be understood—and preserved?
