TENTANG EPISODE INI
Same enemy. Same valley. Different instructions. That’s the tension we sit in with John Eldridge as he unpacks David’s two battles with the Philistines from 2 Samuel 5 and shows why yesterday’s win is not always today’s plan. If you’ve ever tried to lead your family, fix a problem at work, or make a big decision by repeating what “worked last time,” this conversation will hit close to home.
We talk about the partnership mentality David models when he keeps inquiring of the Lord, even after a clear victory. The first time God says go and promises deliverance. The next time God says do not go straight up, circle around, wait, listen for the sound of marching in the treetops, then move quickly. That moment pushes us toward Christian discernment, spiritual maturity, and real dependence on God rather than a spiritual toolkit of habits, gifting, or memorized principles.
We also get practical about hearing God’s voice. Like learning a skill, it takes time, repetition, and humility, and it often starts with small questions before the dramatic ones. If you care about Christian men’s discipleship, spiritual warfare, and learning to follow Jesus in real time, you’ll leave with a clearer next step.
Subscribe, share this with a brother who needs direction, and leave a five star rating and review so more men can get equipped. What’s one “small” decision you want to start praying about today?

TRANSKRIP 🔗
00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:02.959
Welcome to the Daily Blade.
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:10.960
The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil.
00:00:11.199 --> 00:00:17.280
Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight.
00:00:17.519 --> 00:00:19.039
Let's sharpen up.
00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:21.039
Friends, welcome back.
00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:27.039
John Eldridge here, author of Wild at Heart, sitting in this week for Kyle and Joby.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:29.440
It's a real honor to be here with you.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:38.079
This is day four of my opportunity to look at some of the biblical stories of how God works in the lives of men.
00:00:38.479 --> 00:00:44.399
Yesterday we looked at the story in Genesis and how much God loves using human partners.
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:49.119
And obviously, we saw that with Ananias, we saw it with Saul.
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:56.399
And now we're going to look at an episode from the life of David, one of God's great partners.
00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:00.560
This story comes from 2 Samuel chapter 5.
00:01:01.039 --> 00:01:10.159
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him.
00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:13.840
But David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.
00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:19.200
Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.
00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:24.719
So David inquired of the Lord, Shall I go and attack the Philistines?
00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:27.439
Will you deliver them into my hands?
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:34.640
And the Lord answered him, Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:39.840
So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them.
00:01:40.159 --> 00:01:46.400
He said, As waters break out, the Lord is broken out against my enemies before me.
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:50.640
Now what's important is there's a part two of this story.
00:01:50.799 --> 00:01:59.439
The text literally goes right on to say, Once again the Philistines came up and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.
00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:02.239
And so David inquired of the Lord.
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:13.360
And this time God answered, Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:24.960
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.
00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:32.719
So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines, all the way from Gibeon to Gazer.
00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:41.360
Okay, another beautiful story of God's engagement with his friends, with his men, and some key lessons here.
00:02:41.599 --> 00:02:46.639
First off, notice that David also has a partnership mentality.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:52.000
He and God talk about things, they strategize things together.
00:02:52.240 --> 00:03:04.400
And I want to say, my brothers, if I could give you one gift, one wish for you, one prayer, is that you would develop your ability to hear the voice of God.
00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:05.280
Okay.
00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:08.639
So, because notice the big lesson here.
00:03:09.599 --> 00:03:12.719
There is a principle to the life of men.
00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:14.960
There's just something baked into us.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:20.639
And the old saying goes, give a boy a hammer, and the whole world looks like a nail.
00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:27.199
Men will lock on to a certain set of tools, a certain set of gifting.
00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:31.280
They'll lock on to their sense of humor or their brilliance.
00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:35.439
They'll lock on to a commanding style of leadership.
00:03:35.599 --> 00:03:38.800
They will lock onto what works.
00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:40.719
And then we just work it.
00:03:40.879 --> 00:03:42.879
We just work it and work it and work it.
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:45.680
But that's not how, that's not how God works.
00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:50.560
You see, you know, the first time he says, Yeah, go, go now, you're going to get the Philistines.
00:03:50.719 --> 00:03:53.199
The next time he says to David, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:55.759
No, that's not what we're doing this time.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:04.080
This time you're going to circle around behind, you're going to wait till you hear the angelic army marching in the trees above you, and then you're going to move quickly.
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:06.080
Okay, don't delay, move quickly.
00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:12.800
So you see, God doesn't let David just rely on his experience and his toolkit.
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:18.399
This is really important to what it's about to following Jesus.
00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:32.720
Because, guys, you can't master enough principles, you can't memorize enough scriptures to navigate the complexity of this world that we find ourselves in, right?
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:43.360
Your daughter is unique, your marriage is unique, you've got childhood trauma you're trying to heal, you've got supervisors who are complete idiots.
00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:51.680
Like you can't just seize upon a few principles that work for you and just work them and work them and work them.
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:57.279
Instead, God is inviting us to listen and to follow Him.
00:04:57.439 --> 00:04:58.959
Sometimes to wait.
00:04:59.519 --> 00:05:01.199
No, wait.
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:02.000
Okay.
00:05:02.319 --> 00:05:04.879
It's all about following Jesus.
00:05:05.519 --> 00:05:15.279
And so I think as we close today, the question is where are you in developing your ability to hear God's voice?
00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:20.319
This is just like learning to ride a bike, drive a car, swing a golf club.
00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:20.879
Okay.
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:23.680
It's like anything else you enjoy in your life.
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:24.959
Play an instrument.
00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:26.319
It takes time.
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:32.480
It's a little wobbly at first, but practice listening for the voice of God.
00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:34.160
Don't start in the big questions.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:35.600
Don't start in the dramatic.
00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:36.560
That's too hard.
00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:38.319
You start in the simple things.
00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:40.959
Lord, do you want us to invite my parents over?
00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:45.360
Lord, do you want me to say yes to the church's request for me to volunteer?
00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:46.879
Lord, what are you saying?
00:05:47.120 --> 00:05:50.480
In the simple things, learn to hear his voice.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:52.560
Practice listening.
00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:56.319
That's how we come into a true partnership with him.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:05:59.600
Thank you for listening to today's episode.
