Hey.
Speaker A
00:00:00
Hey.
Speaker A
00:00:00
Welcome back to the five minute strategist.
Speaker A
00:00:03
Last week, I got to experience a very loving come to Jesus moment with one of my friends.
Speaker A
00:00:09
We were talking about what my long term vision looks like for my life and for my business, and she highlighted to me how the actions that I'm taking right now are not aligned with that future vision.
Speaker A
00:00:21
They're very focused on what is the business need and not focused on what do I, as the business person, want in the future.
Speaker A
00:00:29
It's very easy for us to get caught up in what we're trying to achieve in our business and forget that we are people who want to grow and develop as individuals as well.
Speaker A
00:00:41
Our personal development becomes a line item on our to do list, if it's even thought about at all.
Speaker A
00:00:47
And it becomes that thing that we just move from to do list to to do list never quite gets ticked off because there's always going to be something that feels more important in the business.
Speaker A
00:00:57
So if, like me, you have been on that little hamster wheel of being a little too business focused for a while, take a step back, have a look at what that long term vision is that you have for yourself and the business, what your core values are, and then assess whether or not how you're spending your time is reflecting those core values and that vision.
Speaker A
00:01:20
One of my favorite ways to do this with clients is to get them to talk to me about what a standard week looks like in their business and to color code that time.
Speaker A
00:01:29
So let's say you have a personal goal of, I don't know, running a marathon.
Speaker A
00:01:35
If you look at your calendar, the time you spend training for that marathon, whether that's you going out on runs, doing mobility work, doing strength training, you color code that a specific color, and you put it into your calendar.
Speaker A
00:01:47
Then if you're chasing a really big business goal, let's say you're trying to get to seven figures.
Speaker A
00:01:52
Any activity you do during the week that's directly related to that gets its own color, and then maybe you have a personal development goal.
Speaker A
00:02:00
So you want to work on your leadership skills.
Speaker A
00:02:02
Anything in that direction gets another color.
Speaker A
00:02:04
Now you're starting to see where your actual priorities are.
Speaker A
00:02:09
You can see where the business stuff, the business goals are dominating your calendar versus where your personal goals are fitting into the mix.
Speaker A
00:02:19
And that's gonna allow you to see whether what you're saying your priority is is actually what's showing up in your actions.
Speaker A
00:02:27
There's a lot of power being able to actually see it, even though you already know it, being able to see it kind of gives you that, like, visualization of data that it's hard to argue with yourself if you haven't thought about this in ages.
Speaker A
00:02:40
Cause you've just been chasing a business goal.
Speaker A
00:02:42
Or maybe everything in the business feels like more of a priority right now.
Speaker A
00:02:47
And the personal development is like a luxury that can come later.
Speaker A
00:02:50
You can think of this personal growth in terms of the business.
Speaker A
00:02:53
So what could you develop that would help you as an individual, but also benefit the business?
Speaker A
00:03:00
So something like developing your leadership skills or taking a writing course, both of which can have knock on impacts into your business, but still fuel you as the person.
Speaker A
00:03:12
It's going to be much easier for you to spot these personal growth opportunities now that you're actively looking for them.
Speaker A
00:03:19
When you are head down in the business and you don't actually know what you're looking for.
Speaker A
00:03:23
From a personal development perspective, it's easy to miss the opportunities that are coming up, because they don't fit the story of what you're chasing in your business.
Speaker A
00:03:32
And then, just like you would for anything else, ask yourself, what are the goals or milestones for this personal growth?
Speaker A
00:03:39
And this doesn't have to be super duper complicated.
Speaker A
00:03:42
It doesn't mean you have to go and do a leadership course.
Speaker A
00:03:46
It could be, I'm gonna read five pages a day of business books about leadership, and then you can evaluate how that's showing up.
Speaker A
00:03:54
Like where you've tried new things, did they work?
Speaker A
00:03:56
What didn't work?
Speaker A
00:03:57
But actually having an objective and having a reflection point for your personal goals, it's what's going to help balance that with the business focus.
Speaker A
00:04:06
And it's going to give you some data that when you think that the business is the only thing that matters and you should drop everything else.
Speaker A
00:04:14
That reflection on how you felt with the personal development, it's going to help you balance things out.
Speaker A
00:04:19
When we think about work life balance, it doesn't only have to be from a time perspective, it can also be from a focus perspective.
Speaker A
00:04:27
It doesn't mean I need an hour a week to go and watch Netflix.
Speaker A
00:04:30
Maybe it means I need an hour a week to read a business book, or listen to a business podcast, or pay attention to that course I bought two years ago.
Speaker A
00:04:37
About mindset in general.
Speaker A
00:04:39
Most entrepreneurs started their business to improve their life so that they could be the person that they wanted to be, rather than fitting into somebody else's box in corporate.
Speaker A
00:04:50
But once we get into the swing of the business, sometimes we can forget that that was where we started.
Speaker A
00:04:56
So when you're thinking about work life balance, I don't want you to just think about time spent I at work, out of work.
Speaker A
00:05:02
I want you to ask yourself if your strategy allows enough capacity for your personal growth, for your personal goals, or if it's just focused on what the business needs.
00:00:00
Hey.
