shatara: I'm I'm like I don't wanna hear it.
Shaun: it? You you said you like it?
shatara: I'm I'm a coffee drinker, but I'm not one of those like excit I I drink caramel macchiato, I drink lattes, like you know, I like my coffee light and sweet. I like dark roast. However, I'm
Shaun: Yeah, I know how you yeah, you y'all like it really, really sweet. Like milkshakes, but hot hot milkshakes.
shatara: yeah, I've toned down the sweet. I could just creamer. Yeah, I've toned it down. But either way, I'm just saying I'll I put it like this. Sweater weather is coming. Let's put just
Shaun: Walla wada.
shatara: sweater weather. And I look forward to that. But I'm I'm a summer. I like summer. I'm not ready for that to go. I'm not ready. I'm not ready. That's why I live in Florida. I said, wait.
Shaun: Okay. Well, I'm I'm never ready, that's why I live in Florida. All right. Huh?
shatara: I got I got these like like ballerina kinda flat shoes and I looked at and I was like, I'm gonna be wearing these with thick socks. I look down and I'm like, like, I'm be wearing y'all with some thick socks and I don't care. Mary Jane looking shoes with some thick socks. I don't care. Here you go with
Shaun: Take me through there. Take me through there. What?
shatara: this. Here we go.
Shaun: I love saying that. All right, Lola look. What do we call this episode?
shatara: I don't know yet.
Shaun: Why do we do this every time?
shatara: No, we we were I don't know. It and then I think of something like later. I'll be somewhere online in the grocery store and be like, boom, it'll hit me. It happens. But anyway, moving forward. boy, maybe that should be the name of the episode.
Shaun: Alright, take me through there. Where we going? That might be. Take me through
shatara: You know what? Let me type this in here. Do dare.
Shaun: there.
shatara: Not T H E R E D
Shaun: D E R.
shatara: E R E. Take me through there. Take me through there.
Shaun: All right. Sound good.
shatara: No, no, I'm serious. Take me through there. Okay. So, speaking of taking me through there, I'm so excited.
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: I gotta talk TV.
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: all right, for starters, I'm still laughing at the fact that Jack Reacher, I'm ca I'm still catching up on Jack Reacher, and you sent me a video of Jack singing. Richter, the actor. But okay. Reacher sing.
Shaun: Alan Rick Rickman, the Rick Richter, the actor. Mm-hmm. He's like the incredible Hulk in real life, right? I told you.
shatara: Yeah, he sings. He sounds really good. But wait, what I'm laughing at is the fact that you said he's starting to look like a black man to you.
Shaun: You didn't see
shatara: No, I was on my way to work and I just started busting out laughing. It was like I'm driving. I'm like, mm-mm mm-mm. And where in what in what world does this man start start?
Shaun: know in the world that I created for my damn self. He's starting to look like a brother to me, just a little.
shatara: S start? Girl bye. I'm still laughing at that. That's that's
Shaun: Maybe because I like him so much. I don't know.
shatara: it. Good looking good looking man. Good looking man. D I give you that, but he's starting to look
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: like a a brother. No. Mm mm.
Shaun: Yes. He was so tanned and anyway.
shatara: Look at you. He's so tanned. He ain't chocolate. He's not a piece of chocolate. He's not chocolate. Good-looking brother. Anyway. Anyway,
Shaun: He's not chocolate, no, he's not chocolate. No.
shatara: so there's that. I wanted to let you know that I did, I did catch up on him. P Valley is coming back on I wrote it down
Shaun: Okay.
shatara: December 4th on Stars. Uncle
Shaun: Uncle Cliff, mm-hmm.
shatara: Cliff is, you know, down in the valley where the girls get naked.
Shaun: I t man, I told you I was watching what's Uncle Cliff's
shatara: Okay.
Shaun: boyfriend on the show?
shatara: I don't know, you said you watched Lantern. I will tell you what Uncle Cliff's boyfriend's name is. Cute guy.
Shaun: And yeah, and I think he's married with kids and everything, but I
shatara: Hey.
Shaun: cannot get o I wa I'm watching lanterns and you I'm I'm the I'm in I'm in it 'cause I think the other guy anyway. And I just can't get over the fact that and he has a pretty pretty decent role in it, but I just can't get over the fact that that was Uncle Cliff's boothang.
shatara: It's boo. Jay, his name is Jay Alphonse Nicholson. Alphonse. Jay Alphonse Nicholson.
Shaun: Okay. That guy. I just remember
shatara: That guy.
Shaun: him spitting in his hand and down in the valley where the girls get naked.
shatara: Go into town. So now P Valley is with the shits. If you watch P Valley, you're
Shaun: Yes, it is.
shatara: with the shits. I don't want to hear nothing about judging people out here in the world. If you tell me you watch P Valley and you go to church on a Sunday, you know what you my kind of people. Because P Valley is with the shits. It's a good show, though. So I'm looking forward to it. apparently there's a pink and then there's like men dancers too. The the trailer for the new season looked off the chain. Now.
Shaun: Okay. Wanda? Yes. The active Gio. Mm-hmm.
shatara: Also, I want to bring this up. Wanda from Snowfall. The actress, her name is Gail Bean. She's also at the pink. And I feel like she was at the end of the last season. She's she
Shaun: Yeah, she she came one of them, mm-hmm.
shatara: she now she was Wanda in Snowfall and and I loved her. She was great, right?
Shaun: Play that role.
shatara: Her and Homeboy supposed to get a spin off. Remember, they moved to Africa at the end of the season and she got herself clean. They're supposed to get a spin off. Those two. Anywho, I I don't know.
Shaun: Right. Right. Okay. Is it Okay. Is it in the works? I 'cause I heard about it, then that was it. You didn't hear anything.
shatara: Right. I I mean Franklin Saint, you know, remember Franklin Saint, he's a he's a ho he's a he's a squatter at the house. Remember, that's how he ended. All they really
Shaun: With the bad teeth. my God. Mm-hmm.
shatara: ended that bad. But and we lost John Singleton in lieu of that. But anyway,
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: Wanda was on a podcast and she was saying how with what she with Naeem Lynn, comedian Naeem Lynn, she was saying that she's been told
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: that she's too old for a lot of different roles.
Shaun: I saw that.
shatara: And she's thirty three, mind you. And she sh now the role that she went up for, which I thought was great, was to play Snoop Dog's wife.
Shaun: Snoop Dogg's wife, yeah.
shatara: Now that would have been ideal. That's good. That's good
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: stuff. And she was told she's too old. So I'm thinking, I'm like, well, if she's told that she's too old, they're gonna tell me that I should be a zombie.
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: They didn't put me in a senior home. I was like, she looks too old. And I'm sorry that it is that way. But she still gets her role. So kudos to her. Keep it, keep
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: it going, girl. You don't, you don't let nobody get you down. So she's doing her damn
Shaun: I know that's right.
shatara: thing. I also watched Why Did I Get Married? Tyler Perry.
Shaun: Is it?
shatara: why did I get married again? It
Shaun: Right.
shatara: came out, I feel like it just it came out last night, and I watched it last night, I think. It was a
Shaun: Okay, what do you think?
shatara: it was a quick little hour and a half, if if that, if no, it was under two hours, I could tell you that. It was
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: good. It wasn't the typical,
Shaun: Okay.
shatara: like I, you know, sisters, I really can't get into. Like I can name you many, you know, Tyler shows that like sometimes I just can't get into it.
Shaun: Yeah, I sighed out all Tyler Perry shows.
shatara: Yeah. And everybody, you know, you don't watch that? No, I don't. okay.
Shaun: No. Namely beauty in black.
shatara: Listen here. If you two. No, I'm saying you two, I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't stick with it. Everybody's like, you missing it.
Shaun: No, I d ooh, I don't I don't like. I can't get into it. I'm not for it. I'm not here for it at all. And I know people who swear by it. Mm mm.
shatara: I I I think I watched, I can't front. I watched at least a good four or five episodes. I did. I I I
Shaun: wow.
shatara: but at some point it was like they are just talking to each other terrible. And yeah, and and just just some
Shaun: It is the lowest low vibrational low.
shatara: some of it was just it was just like the script, the writing. I was like, nah, like for all this thuggery, I can watch Game of Thrones. You know what I'm
Shaun: Right.
shatara: saying? Give me give me a little more plot twist, give me a little more dialogue. Give me a little more, you know, challenge my brain a little bit. Give me a little more. So
Shaun: Mm, mm.
shatara: anyway, Beauty and Black was just not my jam. no knock on it because they did have good outfits and good makeup. I will say that. But anyway, I will why
Shaun: Mine either. Okay. Not not wasn't my jam. Mm-hmm.
shatara: did I get married again? I strongly suggest it. It's a nice little, you know, weekend. It was cute. Jenna Jackson didn't make her way back. You remember that?
Shaun: Did not okay. Yeah, yeah.
shatara: But Taraji P. Henson, she she made a debut in the movie.
Shaun: okay. All right.
shatara: And it fit. It was very fitting. Okay.
Shaun: Okay. I'm gonna watch it because I you mean I wa I I watch it 'cause you said, but otherwise I don't know. Well, I watch
shatara: Yeah, I thought
Shaun: it because there's a legacy why why did I get married? There's a there's a background for it, so. Mm-hmm. Woo Yup
shatara: Yes. Remember boom. You didn't get it from me. Walter gave it to you. Boom. Remember that? They brought all that full circle. The kids are getting married too. I mean, it was it was good. I was like, okay, I like it. Like this was this was all right. Anything more than this, like, mmm. But for what it was, I strongly suggest it. Go for it. Not a big deal.
Shaun: It was all right. Okay. Okay.
shatara: just I want to tell you, one of the funniest memes that I saw that made me laugh out loud, and
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: I shared it with you. It was ninjas really be forty plus talking about where the hoes at. Ninja, your daughter is the hoe now. Ninja. I'm sorry. That made me laugh out.
Shaun: Ho One of those. Mm-hmm.
shatara: If that isn't Kermit the Frog sipping on tea, I was like, that's a good one.
Shaun: You know, mm tell the truth to shame the devil.
shatara: that's a good one, though. Okay, I just had to share that. Okay. moving on. so
Shaun: Yeah, that was. Okay.
shatara: Cardi B goes live while she's tearing some food up. And yeah, I feel like we talk about Cardi a lot, but I like Cardi.
Shaun: I like it too.
shatara: Cardi says, the first three months of dating, don't eat. You can't eat for three months.
Shaun: Why? 'Cause
shatara: Because you're gonna have to use a bathroom. And you not using the bathroom in front of him.
Shaun: Go to the bathroom. Don't use the bathroom in front of him. Go to the restroom like normal people. But okay.
shatara: Go, but we know what it is. You for the number two. She's like, you're gonna have to don't be talking about give me steak and give me bread. You know, she named like everything you want to eat. I'm hungry. No, don't come hungry. Just get if anything, get yourself salmon and a little piece of bread and like keep it cute. She's like, you can't mind you, she's with her long nail, she's like eating some like lobster or something, putting it, dipping it in sauce. Like whoever she's
Shaun: Ha ha ha.
shatara: with at the moment, she's very comfortable. She's comfortable.
Shaun: There is some truth to that. You know, like I know for me, like we're not, we're not going to what's what's the IHOP. We're not going to I hop.
shatara: Huh.
Shaun: Because that's that's that's one of those things. Take that and go home. Do not try to be outside. And we're probably
shatara: Who else?
Shaun: not gonna do tacos with alcohol immediately. Cause just in case. That's all for me.
shatara: Okay. Okay. Because she was like, then you'll be like, excuse me. She's like, can you can we just take me by the Dunkin' Donuts so I can get a latte? excuse me, excuse me. She put on cute little voice. Can you just take me by Dunkin' Donuts so that we can use the bathroom? And I can honestly say I have some horror stories of having to use a bathroom. And you know, I have I think I could do a whole podcast called Talking Shit because I have some stories that are like out of this world. You know this, starting back when I was a little girl in the Thunderbird.
Shaun: No. Hello.
shatara: It goes way back. So imagine now dating and meeting people. Holy bananas. So
Shaun: Come here.
shatara: when she said that, I was like, you know, I never thought like to to kind of limit. Like if we're gonna eat, we're gonna eat and I like to eat. That's I
Shaun: No, I I mean there there's rules to that. I do understand that. Like we ain't it's certain things. We probably not going out for ice cream,
shatara: No
Shaun: like right immediately. We are not going for tacos and margaritas and sh I love Taco Tuesday, but Taco Tuesday don't always
shatara: Tuesday? I want to go to Taco Tuesday. Come on.
Shaun: love me.
shatara: Right. I chose this life. I can't tell.
Shaun: I'm a thug out here because I'll be like, do you love yourself? Then show us how you love yourself because that's not loving yourself. It was good, but was it really that good? Was it worth it? You know, my my other self, my higher self
shatara: This is not self-love. This is not self-love. Was it worth it? Is that part. Was it worth it?
Shaun: no, was it worth it?
shatara: That was it worth it. I mean, I I'm I I rem I've had
Shaun: Mm mm. I'll be like mm mm.
shatara: folks like, you know, that that goodnight, like hug, kiss, like, all like good seeing you, and then let me know later, like, yo, I had to use the bathroom. Like, okay, like it messed your stomach up. Like, okay.
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: But mind you, find out like a year later. Like, remember that night?
Shaun: Yeah. Peace. Remember that night I bounced? That was why I had to go.
shatara: That was when my left leg was trembling out the driver's side of the door. Remember that night?
Shaun: You're right, we could probably do a whole podcast.
shatara: 'Cause it's 'cause you know, if you gotta go, you you know, and that's and the thing about it is that we get so grossed out with bathrooms, like, ugh, but this is the right place to do it. Why are we so mad at each other? This is where you're supposed to do it. The bathroom. Leave
Shaun: This is true.
shatara: me alone. I want my tacos.
Shaun: This is true. Yeah. mm. Okay.
shatara: And then I want ice cream after and I want tray sleches. I'm going in.
Shaun: trend look they got quattro leches out here.
shatara: nana. Look
Shaun: Yeah.
shatara: what you done started. That's what I would be saying, in it. nana I'm gonna be in the bathroom finishing my last little bit. you wanna call me from there? Does your phone work? I would I would be the worst. okay. So anyway, I have I have so much to go into. so next one. Miss comedian Paris Sachet. She goes on and mind you, she's I wanna put the disclaimer on this here. She's a proud gay woman, black woman at that. She goes on to say that straight men should go back to being men so women can stop being gay. Because she's out here this was so interesting and funny at the same time.
Shaun: what a statement.
shatara: Mind you, she's only the New York City train. It's like this you know, show podcast or interviewing. She was just saying that she's I
Shaun: Mm. Do you know her or do you know her personally?
shatara: I I've worked with her before many years ago. So I don't know her personally, but she's
Shaun: Mm-hmm. Okay.
shatara: I'm gonna say she's cool. She was basically saying that she meets women and they're just basically like men, they're I'm gonna say men, they're mad at men, like the race, they're mad at men. And she finds that like like you're not you're not really gay, she's saying, like you she's like, I'm dating women that are not really gay because they're mad at men, because these men are like being bitches.
Shaun: Wow. Interesting. Interesting. Mm.
shatara: Is that not a weekende topic right there?
Shaun: Yeah, that that's what it should have been. Interesting.
shatara: Look, look, the lesbian gave us a weekend D topic. The chances. The irony. Yeah. And I mean, she gives
Shaun: What are the chances?
shatara: this whole breakdown of like how like like men are really like, we don't want your sloppy seconds, but like, well, how are y'all fucking up that you got women turning the whole, you know, turning gay just to be here because y'all are y'all are terrible. I'm like, damn. That's some shit.
Shaun: As well.
shatara: That's I mean, I've heard of women who are gay. Gay for gay for pay? Gay for pay? Put
Shaun: Mm-hmm. men, you hear of men that are gay for pay. I never heard of women that are gay for pay.
shatara: I heard of women, women who yeah, like like she's she's meeting women who are, you know, fed up with men. And and
Shaun: That's different than being gay for pay.
shatara: well, technically, I mean, if you I I know of, you know, a a woman would say, if that woman takes care of me, then shit, she'll go that way. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's been that. Like, like, girl,
Shaun: Ooh Wow Wow It's hot out here for a pimp.
shatara: like I've seen that before. Like, girl, like like what do you mean with all her 19 kids? Like she gay now? Like, yeah. And apparently she's being well taken care of. She is fed up with men.
Shaun: That's really interesting. We should actually dive a little deeper into that. That's that's really good. Maybe we should have her on the show. That's wow. I never never thought of it that way. But then you hear,
shatara: That's some shit. Yeah, never thought about that.
Shaun: like, you know, sometimes like, you know, I I don't I don't want to play for that team. So I don't want to play for the same team, but if it do it sometimes, it's difficult. You know, dating it can be difficult. But that's still like, that doesn't make me wanna jump the fence and
shatara: Yeah. No.
Shaun: come back on the side that I'm already on.
shatara: Right. Right. No. That's yeah, that's that's not my thing. However, it's always interesting, you know, to hear the other side of things. Like, wow,
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: I never even thought of it that way. But yeah, and and I think she makes a good point 'cause, you know, men are we were just talking about men in the nail salon talking about
Shaun: You don't like that.
shatara: You know what I mean? Like, okay. And, you know,
Shaun: You do not like that.
shatara: with purses. They they're doing a lot of, they're doing a lot of bitch, it's a lot of bitch assness going on. I said it. It's a lot. It's a lot.
Shaun: Oof, okay.
shatara: quick shout out, and I want to say rest in peace, condolences to the former hot 97 radio host, Timothy Buckwill. He passed away at the age of 47.
Shaun: Yeah, I heard.
shatara: this kind of hit, especially because many years ago I was in a movie, an independent horror thriller that. Got great awards and it went on to do great things. And it was called Go Digger Killer. produced,
Shaun: Yes.
shatara: written, directed by Jeff Carroll, RBG Entertainment. And that was like my first, you know, film that I had a chance to really to do the damn thing. And I remember getting a phone call saying, Star and Buck Wild, they're shouting out Go Digger Killer on the radio, and they've been talking about it. And it was like, What? And then Sarn Buckwild was like day number two. You they they went on and on about this movie. It turned into like it turned
Shaun: Uh-huh.
shatara: into the, I want to say the barbershop classic. Now it's on Tubi. But anyway, and yeah, they they they
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: definitely they gave some they gave some props to the movie that we did, and that's how long ago that was. And
Shaun: Wow.
shatara: and then I th I feel like Jeff came on the radio and I think Jeff went on the radio and talked about the movie. So yeah, rest in peace. Timothy Buckwild.
Shaun: Wow, yeah. I heard was it s star he was on the radio just talking about
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: it and he was very emotional. And you know, they had a really tense relationship sometimes on on the
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: radio. So but it was it was bittersweet to hear him speak of Buck what what was going on or what had happened or what could
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: have happened. So I I know he had some difficulties later on in life and
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: so rest well.
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: Book. That's a good it was a good time on new in New York City on the radio.
shatara: my gosh. Yeah, times have changed so much. But yeah, that was
Shaun: Uh-huh.
shatara: that was a time. It was Wendy Williams, starring Buckwell.
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: yeah, I can go on, but it was a good time. And in in closing, I will say this for my my ratchet moment. Jamie Foxx has announced his new comedy special, call it calling it Taking Care of Yourself, and that it's gonna be on Hulu. So What had me was in his last special, which was a little bit more like a one man show, do you remember the piano, the daughter came out? He talked about how Atlanta saved
Shaun: Mm mm.
shatara: his life. Atlanta saved his life, you know? Black people, I love y'all. Right. And then he went on to say, and I quote, he's not gonna be with white women anymore, at least in public. And that was the ha ha ha, remember?
Shaun: Uh-huh. His his clone has been with a white woman and had a baby.
shatara: Since then, do you know? Since then, since then, Jamie has had yet another baby with none none n no one else but a white woman. So I'm wondering
Shaun: She looks like the girl on the on the Swiss Miss the packet, the cocoa packet.
shatara: Not Tiger Woods' first wife.
Shaun: Well basically they they all look they all look like that, like Yod Yodelers.
shatara: They have that look.
Shaun: Yodele, Yodele, Yodele, he hoo those. Mm-hmm.
shatara: What the That is fun that's what she looked like? It'd be like Jamie, where you be finding them? Like Jamie, like are you a male order bride, Jamie? Are you a male order bride?
Shaun: in the in the in the mountains in s in Sweden where where where the sound of music was made.
shatara: that's don't you be talking about the sound of music. Don't you be talking about the sound of music.
Shaun: Great movie, but come on now.
shatara: Well, he he ain't getting them from down in the valley where the girls get naked. I know that much.
Shaun: Definitely not. Definitely not.
shatara: So I'm wondering now, I just want to see this Hulu special. And I'm and I like Jamie Foxx. Like I'm a fan of his work. I think he's brilliant. But I'm curious, how is he gonna clean and not even clean this one up? What does he have to say for himself? That's how I feel. Like I want to see it.
Shaun: think he I I don't think this this version of him cares to say anything.
shatara: That's funny. You think you think he's really you think he's a clone? Did you see the Usher clone?
Shaun: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I I think he's like the you know, like the bionic man, like they you know, the super enhanced, they take something out or take it take it away and they control yeah.
shatara: Okay. She said not this version of
Shaun: Mm-hmm. Me and my conspiracy theories that ain't really conspiracies, cause they're backed by facts.
shatara: They're back by facts. Ooh, I like that. We gotta run that back, make that a little dun, dun, dun, don, dun, don, dun, dun. Mm and like a little and little press the button.
Shaun: Mm-hmm. We're gonna say yeah. We're gonna we're gonna do a little a little to a little sound bite and say that. Mm-hmm. Like read. Yep.
shatara: Yes, can you me and my conspiracy theories. That ain't theories, but they be backed up by facts. I I was listening. I was listening. Ding-d-ding-ding. That was good. Okay. So let's
Shaun: Hmm, thank you.
shatara: get into the if you know, you know. We shall.
Shaun: Okay, all right.
shatara: today is
Shaun: Well, we're we're coming on nine eleven. It's going to
shatara: Yes.
Shaun: be the twenty fifth anniversary. So I did want to take a few minutes because this is something that's very personal to many people and it's very personal to me. September eleventh being the day that, you know, we all if if we were here, I don't care where you are, but everybody remembers nine eleven. If you were if you were here on this planet, here in the United States, you absolutely remember that day, you know. whether you watching it on television, you were there, you you were affected. and there were a lot of lives lost on that day. a lot of mothers, a lot of fathers, a lot of husbands, a lot of wives. And for me, nine eleven always carries another layer because During that time I was working for Dean Whitter Reynolds. So this was and I was working in their legal department, but you know, I was doing like push and paperwork. you know, taking
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: my summers and working there my summers from law school. I was in law school in Maryland, and this was before Dean Whitter, I think they joined with Morgan Stanley and they were in the middle of a merger. So You know, that time in September 2001, I was working between I was I was in the second tower and I was working between the sixty-second or the thirty-third floor, because it depending on where where I had to be, I believe. And you know, I just remember leaving our grandmothers in Harlem, taking the train down into the world, you could take the train directly into the World Trade Center.
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: And it would take me about 10 minutes to get from the train, maybe even 10, 15 minutes to get up from the train, go through the mall, because it was an actual mall underneath in underneath the World Trade Center. And I would go to Obo Pond and I would get
shatara: I don't have here.
Shaun: a cheese and cherry daner. Sure would. And and a Snapple. And
shatara: Danish girl. I remember you mm-hmm. I remember.
Shaun: that would be I would take, you know, that would be my breakfast. And I was always scared to take the elevator by myself, but you never had to worry about that because it was so many people. So taking the elevator, I would have to take two elevators up. And it was, you know, at that time they had an elevator operator and he would open the door and it was
shatara: Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Shaun: a huge, you know, huge, huge elevator. So I my plan was during that time, school had started back in August, the end of August, and I was staying, I was staying with our grandparents in Harlem. And my plan was that because I had this cushy job at Dean Witter, so I thought, you know, I was, I don't think I was making like twenty-five or twenty seven dollars an hour, which at that time was like unheard of, right? And my plan was to continue working because they had offered me to kind of, you know, to stay, to continue working and go to I was gonna apply to New York law school. For the next fall. So I was gonna take some time off work. And remember during this time we I mean, I ha I was having such a great time. I was going out, we was hanging out, you know. This was this was the second revival of the tunnel. So, you know, going out to I think the marquee, the different clubs, maybe it was maybe Mars twenty one twelve, maybe forty forty. What's that?
shatara: No, I wanna I just wanna just put this disclaimer on real quick. My sister here is built different. So when you talk about the clubs at that time and you go into law school, they I don't I can't say like they don't make them like you no more. I could just say they built different because some people can like party and then go to sleep. This one here, she can party. And I remember she got herself a typewriter. And my girl would be typing
Shaun: Typewriter.
shatara: it was remember, it was it was the electronic typewriter, and you
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: would be typing papers. And then I know this is the if you know, you know. So this is something. If y'all didn't know, now you know. Cause let me tell you something. Looking back at it, I'm like, my God. And mind you, there's an age difference here. So I used to go out with my older sister. Like, this was my older sister. So as far as setting an example, that was a good example to have set. Cause you was like, I I work hard, I play hard. But you gotta be able
Shaun: Play hard. Yes.
shatara: to do both. And you would just, I remember you, we would get in and I'd be like, my God, I'm so drunk, I'm tired. And I just remember you would put your glasses on and put your remember that Victoria's Secret robe, you tie it up? And my girl would get right to business and I'd be like, Holy sh Wow.
Shaun: This is me. This is my life. That's why I I always said like I had such a good time.
shatara: So I just I just gotta give you all I just gotta give those props. Like wow. So carry on. Mm-hmm.
Shaun: Well, I thank you. I thank you. Yeah. So yes, I I worked hard and I played hard. So imagine. I mean, cause this was a time I was working at the working at World Trade, working at the World Trade Center, working at Dean Widow Reynolds, and this was a time where nightlife nightlife really you Saturday was the off day. You really go out during the week. So you start
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: on a Sunday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, may take off Wednesday, Thursday, maybe a little little happy hour on Friday.
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: And then you rest on Saturday. So imagine. And I I mean I took full advantage. So I mean, there were times where I had to be at work at the World Trade Center at 9 a.m. And we were getting in at like 7, 7:30. So I mean I had to go uptown, change my clothes, and then come all the way back downtown. And that train, you know, that train ride, by the time it left the Bronx, because I, you know, I'm getting on in Harlem. So by the time it left the Bronx, it was packed. So I never
shatara: Yes.
Shaun: sat down. So my hour ride to the World Trade Center, the whole ride, I'm standing up. And
shatara: Then
Shaun: mind you, sometimes I'm I'm sleeping standing up. So you just learned don't put anything in your pockets because they pickpockets is out here doing one of these, like putting their hands in your, in
shatara: He
Shaun: your, in your, in your bag, in your pocket, clean up. Just just close your eyes a little bit and just and just get there. But have had a great time, you know, great time the night before. And I had
shatara: Yep, huh, huh, yep, yep, yep, mm-hmm, mm, mm mm.
Shaun: to be to work, had to be at my desk at nine o'clock. So whatever I had to do. I'm running, you know, get out the train station, go to Album Pond, get my little a little Snapple, my little dessert, then, you know, work go with the with the work people, cause you start seeing the same people, even though it's like, you know, hundreds and thousands of people, get on the elevator, go up and make sure I'm at my desk at nine o'clock, no matter what. So that, so nine
shatara: Mm, she was there. Whoop.
Shaun: eleven. So going back during that, that week before, I had already decided that I was not going. Back to law school in Maryland. I was gonna stay, I was gonna work, and my plan so school had already started, right? School had already started the end of August. So I told our grandmother, who just to give you the idea, you know, she was so happy that I was living there with her. She they were so excited. I mean, cooking, you know, the whole thing. I'm watching games, we're watching our shows. I love being you know, you know our relationship with our grandparents was rest to West Well, both of them was was out of this world, was phenomenal. Yes.
shatara: Now I gotta put this. Let me hook. So now I gotta I gotta stop here again. Now you are the first grandchild. Is that fair? Let me look around. Anybody else
Shaun: Mm-hmm. Their first her first grey job. Mm-hmm.
shatara: wanna claim this here? You're the first grandchild to my nanny
Shaun: Right.
shatara: and granddaddy, right? So you know the term dote when people like they're doting on there. They doted on this one here. Let me tell you something. Where like they will let me know, like, like, you know, Jantice is coming. Like, granddaddy will get you a snapple. A slice of pizza. She don't eat pork, so we got her some turkey so she can make sandwiches. And it was like they were telling me about it. Like, did you hear? Like, like she, you know, she's coming. And you know, we wanna make sure, you know, 'cause she gotta go to work and like things were like laid out for you. And I'd be like, So where am I gonna sleep? So, do can I stay too? Or is the I mean, they were ready to lay out the red carpet, like, and they, you know, they they and they admired that she was working hard. Like there was that part too, but they yeah. They they really they love some shanti. Did you did you George, did you get the Snapples? Then you would make sure that they had Snapples for you when you were coming home on the weekends. Like it was they don't gotta worry about you, you know.
Shaun: I know. I know. I'm man. I so, so imagine when I was I'm I'm letting our grandmother know my plan. I'm letting her know to go to Ninny
shatara: She loved it.
Shaun: and I'm like, she'll be so excited because I've
shatara: She loved it.
Shaun: decided to stay and not go back to school and go to school in New York. And she's gonna be so excited. And I'm just gonna work and I'm gonna be here. I'm gonna be here, right? I told our grandmother.
shatara: Uh-huh.
Shaun: So I probably I t I told her 'cause but I didn't school 'cause she I think she asked me, like, cause school had already started. And she was like, first she was silent and she was like, Well, I basically I don't know where you're gonna go, but you gotta you you can't stay here. You gotta go back to school. You gotta go back to school. I was like, but I'm gonna I got this great job. I'm working at Dean Witter. I can I please I'm gonna stay and I am gonna go back to school, but I'm gonna take a year off. Cause basically I'm thinking I'm stacking my money. Mind you, I'm making $27 an hour. So she just she was she was adamant. I had to go back, like quit that job, go back to school. So what did I do?
shatara: Wow. Mm-hmm.
Shaun: I worked up until the Friday before 9 11. I believe that was September the 7th. That was my last day because it was a payday too. So I was like, okay. Sad because I'm like, this is my last day. And I swayed to get my check. You know, it was a paper check back in the back in those days. I had my paper check that I
shatara: Right. Yep. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Shaun: could put. I had an ATM. I think I had an ATM card. So that Saturday, which would have been the 8th of September, packed my little my little yeah, Acura up, and I drove back to school. And I was sad. I was sad. And your grandmother, this was the the sweetest and nicest, but more like you got to go. You got to go. I don't know what
shatara: You got it.
Shaun: you I don't you got you can't even I was like, I can't even stay. Like, no, you can't even stay. You got to go back to school. And so I packed up my my
shatara: You have to finish school back in where you're already going.
Shaun: little car. I was I think I had te I know I had tears in my eyes. I packed up my car and I went back to Maryland on September the eighth, two thousand and one.
shatara: my god.
Shaun: That was the that was the weekend before. So You know, the tower that tower that I worked in, tower two, that was the tower that was hit by the United Airlines flight 175 that hit it that Tuesday morning.
shatara: Mm.
Shaun: And the only reason that I left that job, that cushy job that I remember I I I knew this guy that worked in the department and I was a little crushed. So it even made it better to go to work 'cause I was like, I get to see him, you know. I get to, you know, I get I get to I get to I get to see him. I'm I you know I wasn't even it was it was like a bunch of paperwork. I wasn't even doing that much. It was such an easy job. I just had to be there. That was the whole thing. Make sure you get there. And they would sometimes they would if you stayed late, they said you get a cab home. So great, I get a cab to go back up, you know, uptown. It's it's all covered. The only reason I left that job was because of Our grandmother, Minnie. Our grandmother, which I we all call called Ninny, because when I was little, I called her, I tried to call her name Minnie, and I said Ninny, and it all stuck with all of us. So my Ninny was like, go
shatara: It's the we all call her Nanny. Yeah.
Shaun: back to school. And she's the only reason. Because Friday, that Friday, because of her, that Friday was my last day, you know, and four days later, we know what happened. Had I gone to the work had I gone to work. Because everything or and I watched, you know, I was glued to the T V like a lot of people were watching it, you know. I was I watched it from Maryland and I I I saw Like everyone, you know, the elevators that I used to take, the hallways that I I knew. you know, one of the things that I always no one ever talks about, but world the World Trade Center had like a world underneath it. There was a mall. Do you remember? There was
shatara: Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah, I remember them all, yeah.
Shaun: there was there was a whole mall across the street, there was Century 21. There
shatara: Mm-hmm. Century twenty one. Yep.
Shaun: was the the subway system, I mean that was that was a stop on the train. So The buildings collapsed, but imagine there were at least five or six floors underneath the building. There were
shatara: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Shaun: schools, there were I always, always think about that because it's it was gone. And you know, for some reason this year, this is 25 years, because I always say, you know, never forget. We always say never, never forget. And for a long time, I never looked. Because again, this was before I think we might have had AOL or something like this. Was before Facebook. This was before the internet, right? So or at least people weren't but weren't even using it the way that they're using it now. So
shatara: No. Yeah, absolutely.
Shaun: I never did a search to find out what happened to the people that I worked with. I never I never looked online. I think it took me like twelve years after to To type in, you know, a name and or
shatara: Name. Yeah.
Shaun: or or something. And I still don't know what happened to the people that I work with, to the people I remember, you know, seeing, I I I don't, I don't know. And so it's very difficult to explain to people because I'm not necessarily I'm not a survivor of 9-11. You know, I was not there that morning, but for Our grandmother. I
shatara: Mm.
Shaun: I wasn't there, but you know, so I would never take, you know, the words from the people that were actually there on that morning. But I understand what it feels like to look at your own life and realize, but for one decision, but for one change in direction, but for for me, a weekend. Four days, a weekend.
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: My it what for that? My story would be. Very different. Your story would be very different. Our story would be very different. So every
shatara: Mm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Shaun: September eleventh, I think about that. My my heart is You know, like I I just I don't really have the words.
shatara: Yeah. Well, I'm glad you're here. And I'm so glad that our grandmother was the divine, the divine word. She was the divine word. It wasn't
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: your time to go. And we're still here to talk about it. And those 25 years have gone by very fast. Kids from 9-11 are now 25. I mean, I remember the survivors, you know, there's a lot of kids. And everybody's growing up. Everybody's grown up. So It's it's a it's a sad history that America holds onto. But we must pay tribute to those who have lost and and those who are still here.
Shaun: Yeah. Yeah. I Wow. You know, I think like she must have knew something. I mean, you know, we
shatara: Yeah. But Nini to have been adamant to tell you, like, cause really, you know, you you were about your business and your plan. So she really could have okay, well play, you know, run that by me one more time.
Shaun: Right.
shatara: okay, but for whatever reason she was adamant about that. That was that was divine. And that's how, you know, one would say, That's how you know you're covered. That's how you know you're covered. You're covered.
Shaun: Yeah, so I'm so grateful
shatara: Yeah. So
Shaun: for our grandmother. I'm so grateful for the divine word and you know, just me listening. And,
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: you know, I would I I would have never have gone against her, but it it hurt my heart at that time, you know.
shatara: Right.
Shaun: to leave to leave there and not knowing that the place that I left does not even exist anymore.
shatara: Right.
Shaun: So
shatara: Wow.
Shaun: I think maybe like thirteen or some thirteen years later, I think I went to the memorial. I took your nephew, we went, but I couldn't I just when we got out the train, I think I I I stood back and saw, but I couldn't I couldn't go in, you know, to the memorial. Have you ever been?
shatara: No. I feel like I've I I walked in the area but I didn't I really didn't have it in me to go through the to the memorial that they made. No.
Shaun: Yeah, I I did. I thought I I thought I did, but and like I said, that was like thirteen or fourteen years later and I I couldn't do it.
shatara: Yeah. Yeah. Well,
Shaun: So, you know, I'm
shatara: I I from what I know, we'll be in school tomorrow, so there'll be a moment of silence. And I know that on T V every channel will be tuned into the nine eleven memorial service that they have and they name everybody that they possibly have counted that, you know, we've lost in that time and it goes on for I feel like last time I watched on TV, it's on for some time. It's not quick. It's not quick. Yeah. Names and people speaking and Yeah.
Shaun: Yeah. That's like two two hours. Two two hours of Jess names. Two, three hours. Mm-hmm.
shatara: Okay.
Shaun: All right.
shatara: All right, all right. So that is tomorrow. All right. So I'm gonna get into a low weekend D. All right.
Shaun: Yes, let's do it. Let's do it. Let's lift it up.
shatara: Me, me, me, me, me, me. Pick it up. All right, y'all. We
Shaun: Okay.
shatara: are at the weekend D report. If you have a comment or question for the weekend D report, go to our Linktree, which is Linktree slash twist pod. Scroll to the bottom, send us an email or leave a voice message. please,
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: y'all, please leave us voicemail. We we love to hear you. We love to. We love to talk about what y'all are talking about. And so each week we will unpack a chapter from our upcoming book, The Player's Heartbreak Handbook, a survival guide for your heart, your wallet, and your peace. we are writing this book for anybody who has loved hard and learned harder because sometimes, what do we say? The lessons hit before what the healing does. Do you like that? Okay.
Shaun: Yeah, you learned those. Mm-hmm.
shatara: so the working title of tonight's chapter is called The Friend Who Knows Too Much. Does that sound about right?
Shaun: Okay.
shatara: Okay. All right. So what do we have here? All right, ladies, ladies, ladies. My husband and I have been married for nine years. I recently found out that one of my closest friends knew he had cheated on me several years ago. Apparently he confided in her because they were friends before he and I met. She says she told him he needed to tell me, but felt it wasn't her place to blow up our marriage. He eventually
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: confessed to me on his own and we've dealt with the cheating. What I'm struggling with now is her. She continued coming to my house, going on trips with us, celebrating birthdays
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: with me, and listening to me talk about my marriage while knowing something, while knowing something so significant. She says she
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: wasn't protecting him. She was refusing to insert herself into our marriage. I don't know if I can look at her the same way. Was she actually being a loyal friend by staying out of it? Or did she betray me by keeping his secret?
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: That's a law and order dum Ding ding bring ping 'cause this is a crime. Cause this is a crime. What do you think? What say you, sister?
Shaun: a tough one so i've i've been in that position and i i've heard so many times i've i've had many incidences that i've heard of where that's the the these are the clues so so the first thing i think is you know was the friend was she like hiding stuff for the for the husband like was she keeping his confidence or
shatara: It's it sounds
Shaun: Was sh or it was she like an active participant in in in the dirt. That's what I'm
shatara: It sounds like it was just something that she knew, like, because he and her were friends first. That's that's what I'm hearing. She was friends with the husband first
Shaun: Okay.
shatara: and then became friends with them as a couple and celebrates with them and the family. And you know, it's a whole family thing. Kind of like, Why did I get married again? Friends, this one knows the secret.
Shaun: Okay, so so so she was friends with the cheating husband. This woman was friends with the cheating husband before she was friends with the wife. With the wife. Okay.
shatara: Yes, yes.
Shaun: So this is this is where I think you have to talk about what's the definition of a friend? Because,
shatara: Okay.
Shaun: you know, it it gets it it gets it gets messies because it
shatara: Whoa.
Shaun: gets messies because The friend is this woman is saying basically I don't want to, I don't want to get a be a part of y'all's mess. I don't want to be a part of the mess, right? But at the same time, you're already kind of a part of it because you're you're a friend of the marriage. So you're already you're you're already in it. So you trying to say, you know, I don't want to become the mess messenger or whatever, is kind of like it's it's I can understand it, but at the same time, it's like, well. Look what your position is. You are a friend of the marriage. So for her to say, like, what their ma you know, y'all's marriage is none of my business, it doesn't jibe with the fact that, but y'all are you're a friend of the marriage, right? That's a part of the friendship, is the marriage, correct? So you you this woman is this friend is coming into y'all's home, the marital home. Did she say she vacationed or she went out or she did something? You know, they they're friends. Maybe
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: they do they do stuff together. So, you know, you d I'm sure y'all celebrate birthdays, y'all do all this stuff. So you basically sat across you know, y'all sat there and she knew she had this information. This this friend knew and she didn't say nothing. So I'm just like, what you it's almost like you you can't be a silent partner. You can't you can't do that. So if you wanna stick on stick on the side that's truth, that's a real friend. Because now it's like, well, what kind of friend is she? 'Cause
shatara: Tell you kind of friend she is. The kind of friend
Shaun: Go ahead. Huh?
shatara: she is, is she's not your friend. That's all. That that's how I look at it. That that's all it is.
Shaun: Okay. Well maybe yeah, 'cause I'm over here like but
shatara: No, that's because I'm gonna tell you right now the type of friend I am, especially with my with
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: my with my girls too. Who let me tell you something? Your man don't gotta worry about where my loyalty lies. I'm telling. You don't gotta worry about me keeping no secrets. You don't gotta you you already know you you got Shatara's your friend. That's how you that's how you're gonna explain who I am. Shatara is your friend. I have no loyalty to your man. I don't owe him nothing. I'm, you know what I mean? That's how I look at it. Now, but that's what I'm saying.
Shaun: But that's not the she came into this French okay.
shatara: So, in terms of a friend, that's why her loyalty was with the guy because they were friends first. So, granted, y'all ended up becoming friends and you know, you're going trips and all that shit together, but you know, back up for a minute. He was friends with her before y'all even met. So I expect my man that I have right now, his homegirl, that you know, they're friends and it's fine with me. I expect her to know his dirt.
Shaun: Mm.
shatara: And I'm not mad at her for keeping his dirt. I'm not mad at her. Cause I know who you're friends with first, where your loyalty is at. I don't care if you came to my daughter's suite sixteen and we blown out candles. I know who you're loyal to. That's how I think. Make sense?
Shaun: Okay. So she's not so this woman is not her friend. And I I tend to agree with that. I think the question she needs to ask or she should ask her is like if he never said if the husband never said anything, was she ever gonna tell her? Was she ever gonna confess? And I think that that's that'll tell you what kind of friend she is, 'cause she might she might say, No, I would have never said anything, it was on him.
shatara: Well yeah, but then you'll never know. I think that's that's easier to ask a question, woulda, coulda, shoulda, because that's like Kanye. Like people ask me if I wasn't gonna win a Grammy tonight, and then Kanye
Shaun: Ha
shatara: was like, We'll never know. This is the same thing. We'll never know. You can say, I woulda girl, I would've no. You'll we'll never know what you would have done. You know what I'm saying? That's
Shaun: Right.
shatara: that's out the bag now. So
Shaun: Why yeah, so I I definitely think that she needs to she needs to redefine what a friend is because this I agree with you. This is probably not your friend. And
shatara: No, that's all and
Shaun: granted, this woman was probably put in a little bit of a sticky situation. I'm not gonna say I don't think she did it deceptively or she was trying to betray her, but it's just like you don't want it to be a part of your bit. I don't want it, I don't want to have nothing to do with that. Right. But unfortunately You do have something to do with it. And a better thing would have been for you to be truthful, you know. I I think
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: she could have saved this friend this friend could have saved herself if she had a maybe given the husband look, look, you need to you need to tell her or I'm gonna tell her.
shatara: The right, right, in the beginning. Once she's like, listen, I'm really having I'm I'm forming a friendship with your with your wife right now.
Shaun: Right.
shatara: Now she's my home girl, you know, we're going to home goods, like we're hanging out now. And she she trusts me, you know, her mom, whatever the case may be, we're forming a friendship. That's when the ultimatum comes. Don't let me go any deeper in this friendship. I need you to let it be known because
Shaun: Yeah.
shatara: I would want to know if it was me. Give him that, give him that ultimatum to tell it, you know. Then yeah, fine. But if you're telling me it's been years down the line. shoot. They
Shaun: Yeah, I agree. I agree with that. I think she should have she should have given given him some sort of timeline like you tell or I'ma tell.
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: 'Cause 'cause this is my friend.
shatara: Right. Cause that's my friend. So too much time has gone by. She said they've been going on trips, celebrating birthdays. She listens to me
Shaun: Yeah.
shatara: talk about the marriage, knowing something was significant happening. Like so now you have too much friendship built up on her. So yeah, she so yeah, let's look at her like, yeah, I you know, you weren't my friend, you were a friend of him. And that's fucked up because women should stick together, but whatever. Pass me the candles for the cake.
Shaun: Yeah. All while knowing that that her husband cheated on her. That's wild.
shatara: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Shaun: That's wild.
shatara: Yeah. Yeah. I don't I don't like it. It's she's she's she's messy adjacent. She that friend she's
Shaun: Ha ha ha.
shatara: Pretty much, right? That part, like that's
Shaun: Pretty much.
shatara: all. You've a little messy adjacent. You're really kind of in the mix with it, but yeah.
Shaun: Yeah. Yeah. So girl, redefine what your friends are. Cause you gotta also you have to have categories of friends. Like you know there's some of them some friends that you you have this is my friend, but you don't trust you don't give them all your trust. This is this is a person.
shatara: No, I don't yeah.
Shaun: She has she has definitely earned her space as you need to put her on the outskirts of what a friend is, you know.
shatara: And my ears would have went up first and foremost when I'm introduced to this female friend of my man. And if he's like, No, no, we're just friends and we're good and you know, I trust I'm gonna look at it like, okay, this is your friend. I'm a I'm I'm already putting her over here. Like this is your friend. okay. Yeah.
Shaun: Okay. You know okay.
shatara: She can sh no we we can still we can still vacation, we can still have fun together, all that, but I'm still gonna know like this is your friend.
Shaun: That's how you got here. you know, but
shatara: Ye right. Yeah. Keep that in mind, baby. Mm mm.
Shaun: It's well, I know in in a prior relationship I I befriended the women that were
shatara: Yeah.
Shaun: anyway. But it but I could see why, you know, the but they had to make a decision at some point, like whose friend are you?
shatara: That's true. Yeah. Yeah. I yeah, I don't want to be messy. So at some point, like I think the ultimatum had to be made where you tell her or I'm gonna tell her because we're friends now. And just because I'm a woman and I wouldn't want that shit done to me, I'm Gary, I'm letting you know you need to tell her. And that's it. And then then then it looks like okay, now then she'll come and be like, Wow, we're really friends, girl. You did that for me.
Shaun: Right. And that that's a spot of that's a spot of loyalty. That's a sign. That's a show of loyalty. Like, this this this all right. We we could do we could do this. Mm-hmm. That's right.
shatara: A Lannister pays his debts. You get what I'm saying? That's all life. Okay. There we go. I think I think we helped her out. I hope we did. Hey, hey,
Shaun: I hope we do. Okay. All right.
shatara: it's your jam. It's your jam.
Shaun: It's my jam. All right. So this week is my jam. And because you did Banana Rama Cruel Summer last last week, I wanted to follow up with one of my favorite songs during that time. actually this was 1977. So 1977 was the song The Chain by Fleet with Mac. So let me just let me just do this. Fleet with Mac. is one of my favorite bands of all times. I wish I had or will have an opportunity to see them live. I said it's like we we need to see some of these some of these actual bands from from back in the day before it gets too late. This is a band that I I'm I'm gonna have to put together something to go and see. I if they ever get back together and they ever decide they're gonna perform together. This is where I will be. So you have to understand Fleeper Mac a little bit of the story, the background because they was just They was an absolute mess back in the 70s and 80s. So this song, this song came out on their rumors album, and somehow the mess gave us one of the greatest albums ever made because it was Stevie Nicks. We love Stevie Nicks, right? Stevie, I
shatara: Love her.
Shaun: I love Stevie Nicks. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. So they were together, but they were breaking up. So they so the two lead singers of the band was together, but then they was they was messy, they was breaking up. Then you had Christine and John McVie. Which, you know, he was on a guitar and not the guitar, the bass, and and Christine. They had just gotten divorced. So these were people that were writing songs about each other and they were recording songs together. And they were
shatara: Damn.
Shaun: singing background vocals and songs about their own breakups. And they were getting on stage together
shatara: Cold blooded.
Shaun: every night and performing them. The mess, child of mess. So because, you know, unlike most songs on rumors. They were primarily written by one member. The chain is credited, all five of them. Basically, they said, you know what? I'ma get a credit, you're gonna get a credit, everybody gonna get a credit. So it was a culmination of all of them with all of the mess, with all that was going on. So the thing about the irony is that his group, I like I said, they was falling apart, literally falling apart. But they wrote one of the best songs and they got together to perform one of the best songs ever. The chain. And if you don't love me now, you will never. Me again, I
shatara: Mm-hmm.
Shaun: can still hear you singing you would never break the chain. What? Doom. And let me tell you that there's a three minute at the three-minute mark of the song, this John McVee. He comes in creeping with the bass line. Doom.
shatara: Okay.
Shaun: play that in the I could play that sitting in the dark. I'd just be like doom doom doom
shatara: Hey.
Shaun: doom do that bass is talking, talking. So man, dark, I it the it was it was my song. It's my song and it's one of my anthems. So I don't know. I know you've here heard me play this song, but what do you think about it?
shatara: it's good. I I I always I I hear the voice and she has such like a distinct voice. Like, so I would say
Shaun: Mm-hmm.
shatara: like I wanna say like all her songs. Like, shoot, plead with Mac, like all her songs, like shoot. She yeah, so this was good. But then this this the lyrics in this song is like she's talking about something. Like, hold on a minute now. It's a good substance there.
Shaun: Her heart. You know her heart is on the line. Like, you don't love now. You ain't never love me again. I remember
shatara: Never gonna love like yeah. So this this was good.
Shaun: you said you ain't never gonna break this chain. And look.
shatara: And look and look at ya, look at ya. I think Gwen Stefani took a page out of her book with s you know, writing a song about the breakup and still like the don't speak, you know, like they were still they were still playing together
Shaun: yeah. Mm-hmm.
shatara: and come on y'all, we know music. Come on, y'all, come on y'all, we know music and
Shaun: Mm-hmm. This this song, the guitar, the bass, the drums, the whole, the whole, the whole culmination. And I mean this song is like 50 years old. It never gets old. Never gets old. Yeah.
shatara: Wow.
Shaun: Keep us together. Right in the shadow.
shatara: Mm-hmm. All the instruments. Pay atten pay attention, y'all. Pay attention. Listen. It's like like you said, the band, like it's a whole band. You hear a guitar, you hear a bass. Right? Okay. All right.
Shaun: Love it, love it. You hear the guitar? my goodness. So yeah, the chain. Keep us together. Look, all right, y'all. If you've enjoyed this episode, show us some love. Like it, comment, share it.
