00:00:02.279 --> 00:00:06.280
Hello, and welcome to raze Ji's Story Hour. As a reminder,
2
00:00:06.440 --> 00:00:09.640
RAI is a reading service intended for people who are
3
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:12.560
blind or of other disabilities that make it difficult to
4
00:00:12.599 --> 00:00:16.480
reprint material. Today we will be reading from various books
5
00:00:16.519 --> 00:00:21.039
on Trees. Your reader today is Diane. We will begin
6
00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:26.640
with the book Trees. It was published by beach Lane
7
00:00:26.679 --> 00:00:31.879
Books and Imprintive Simon and Schuster's Children Publishing Division. It
8
00:00:32.039 --> 00:00:37.840
has a copyright year of twenty nineteen and it was
9
00:00:37.920 --> 00:00:43.759
written by Verley Hutchins. Each tree, all versus story, a clue,
10
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:48.240
a dance that makes it its very own self. Mapel
11
00:00:48.320 --> 00:00:52.039
scenes to the heavens. Reaching out, she offers her precious
12
00:00:52.079 --> 00:00:55.880
sap to celebrate the return of the light and sweeten
13
00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:59.960
the last days of winter. Aspen, tall and graceful, dance
14
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:05.239
on her tippy toes, Her gold and leaves like castanets,
15
00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:10.879
shimmer in the breeze. Oak stands strong, rooted deeply in
16
00:01:10.920 --> 00:01:13.920
the earth. His mighty branch is held out just so,
17
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.840
palms up to receive the joy of birds. Silly Palm,
18
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:24.359
plain and skinny doesn't have one single branch. She saves
19
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:29.359
all her leaves for her most amazing hat shy pussy
20
00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:32.640
Willow takes in her stage one week in spring, when
21
00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:39.480
kitten velvet buds adorn her. Modest twigs, apple tree wis
22
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:44.200
and gnarled binslow. His branch is weighed down with round
23
00:01:44.280 --> 00:01:48.359
red fruit and age. Little red bud plays hide and
24
00:01:48.439 --> 00:01:53.239
seek in bare branch woods until pink purple giggles burst
25
00:01:53.359 --> 00:02:00.000
forth and give her hiding place away. Spruce in blue
26
00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:04.120
porcupine armor aims for the sky like an arrow. His
27
00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:11.199
heart sores dogwood bows beside the walk. Welcoming the guests,
28
00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:15.879
he offers treats on silver trays, canopies of sunshine and
29
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.719
pollen sycamore. The fashion queen wears a jigsaw puzzle gown
30
00:02:20.840 --> 00:02:26.280
and big flashy leaves. Fuzzy round bobbles dangle from her ears,
31
00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:32.639
white pine, unruly uncle, large and messy shirt tails, flying buttons,
32
00:02:32.680 --> 00:02:38.960
a kilter, shaggy hair, unkempt, unkempt, he laughs too loud.
33
00:02:39.599 --> 00:02:44.680
Willow dances in her narrow kimono with elegant sweeping sleeves,
34
00:02:44.759 --> 00:02:49.800
wafting in gentle wind birch when other trees were leafless
35
00:02:49.919 --> 00:02:57.039
black struts and royal ermine robes. Sequoia holds memories for
36
00:02:57.159 --> 00:03:02.280
the tribe of trees tilling from another age before the
37
00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:08.560
time of Saals. Our next book is titled The City
38
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:12.120
Tree and it was published by Clearing Books and Imprint
39
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:16.560
of Harper Collins Publishers. It has a copyright year of
40
00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:22.120
twenty twenty three and the author is Shira Boss. In
41
00:03:22.159 --> 00:03:26.919
front of Danny's building was a hole, sometimes dusty, sometimes puddly,
42
00:03:27.319 --> 00:03:32.599
and sometimes wild with bits of green. One day, Danny
43
00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:36.479
saw something coming, something different from the bricks and buses,
44
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:42.960
glass and steel. Its bark was craggy, its limbs were curvy,
45
00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:46.879
leaves slip flat. Danny used to be woken in the
46
00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:51.159
morning by the garbage and recycling trucks rumbling and crunching.
47
00:03:52.120 --> 00:03:55.360
Now at down little birds and the tree chirped and
48
00:03:55.599 --> 00:04:00.560
cheapd The tree was the weather vein. It's leaves fluttering, breezy.
49
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:05.000
Today it's branches bending, said, bundle up. On wet days,
50
00:04:05.080 --> 00:04:09.719
Danny watched the leaves grow brighter, brighter green, with a
51
00:04:10.039 --> 00:04:15.319
wash of pattering raindrops. The city changed and snorted and roared.
52
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:21.399
The tree rustled and swished and soothed. Traffic bellowed and belched,
53
00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:25.920
the tree spreading canopy made a cloak that childed Danny
54
00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:30.399
from the noise and grime. Danny watched the branch's weaving
55
00:04:30.519 --> 00:04:36.680
new shapes, the shadows always changing. People hurried and scurried,
56
00:04:36.759 --> 00:04:41.360
rushing right past Danny in the tree. The tree stood steadfast.
57
00:04:41.959 --> 00:04:47.480
Danny poured out stories, wonders, worries. Danny climbed bigger trees
58
00:04:47.519 --> 00:04:50.920
in the park, trees with squirrels and blossoms and apples
59
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:56.079
to eat, but always came home to this tree, which
60
00:04:56.199 --> 00:05:02.040
was less magnificent but more special. However, not everyone passing
61
00:05:02.680 --> 00:05:06.839
by was kind to the tree, and often it needed
62
00:05:07.079 --> 00:05:12.360
some help. In spring, buds appeared and leaves unfurled. The
63
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:15.800
tree was a garden. In summer, the leaves shaded the
64
00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:19.560
stoop and sidewalk from the hot sun. The tree was
65
00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:24.000
an oasis, and fall gun leaves floated down one after another.
66
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:27.920
The tree was a treasure chest, and in winter the
67
00:05:27.959 --> 00:05:31.519
branches rested like paint brushes in a cup. The tree
68
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:37.360
was the starlight morning, noon and night, through stormy days
69
00:05:37.399 --> 00:05:43.040
and sunshine rays. The tree was a good friends. The
70
00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:46.680
life of a street tree. Why are street trees special?
71
00:05:47.120 --> 00:05:50.680
Trees Planted long city streets bring the colors, shapes, and
72
00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:53.800
breath of nature. Right to the front doors of people
73
00:05:53.800 --> 00:05:57.720
who don't have yards with trees, come birds, insects, and
74
00:05:57.839 --> 00:06:02.439
signs of the changing seasons. How do street trees help people?
75
00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:06.399
Trees help soften the harsh sounds of a city. They
76
00:06:06.399 --> 00:06:09.720
can absorb as much as half of urban noise that
77
00:06:09.879 --> 00:06:13.160
makes the city more peaceful. Trees clean the air by
78
00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:16.600
absorbing air pollution and trapping dust and grit on their
79
00:06:16.680 --> 00:06:20.120
leaves and bark. A large street tree can absorb ten
80
00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:23.720
pounds of air pollutants every year. Ten pounds is like
81
00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:27.199
two large sacks of flour. That makes the air healthier
82
00:06:27.319 --> 00:06:30.959
for us to breathe. In hot weather, a city gets
83
00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:34.920
even hotter than other areas, becomes a heat island. Buildings,
84
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.439
pavement in other hard surfaces trap and hold heat, then
85
00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:44.800
radiate back like an oven. Trees act like air conditioners.
86
00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:49.000
They shade these surfaces and us and release water vapor
87
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:52.360
through their leaves. This cools the air around them up
88
00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:55.879
to ten degrees. That makes the city more comfortable and
89
00:06:56.079 --> 00:07:00.639
saves energy. When trees line city streets, traff it moves
90
00:07:00.759 --> 00:07:05.319
more slowly. That keeps us safer. City trees lower our
91
00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:08.639
stress and help us feel happier. Just seeing a tree,
92
00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:12.480
even through a window, actually helps our bodies' bit sickness.
93
00:07:12.920 --> 00:07:15.439
When you live near a tree, you typically miss for
94
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:19.079
fewer days of score work. The bigger the tree, the
95
00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:22.399
greater it's benefits. That's why it's so important not only
96
00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:25.439
to plant trees, but to help them grow for many,
97
00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:31.160
many years. How can we help street trees this story
98
00:07:31.240 --> 00:07:34.240
Danny helps the tree grow strong by cleaning trash out
99
00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:37.839
of the tree pit, protecting it from dog urine, building
100
00:07:37.879 --> 00:07:40.519
a tree guard, and by treating it like a friend.
101
00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:43.639
We can help street trees by doing these same things.
102
00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:46.519
Trees also need to be watered when they are newly
103
00:07:46.600 --> 00:07:50.000
planted and in dry, hot weather. A new tree needs
104
00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:53.680
twenty gallons of water a week. All street trees will
105
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:57.079
grow better when water during the summer. Use a hose
106
00:07:57.160 --> 00:08:01.279
or buckets to give your neighborhood tree a drink. Loosen
107
00:08:01.399 --> 00:08:05.600
up the soil. City trees, especially those without tree guards,
108
00:08:05.720 --> 00:08:08.879
get stepped on a lot that pounds down the soil,
109
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:12.000
so it cannot absorb as much water and tree roots
110
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.519
cannot get the oxygen and water they need. Use a
111
00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:19.839
hand coveater, which looks like a claw to loosen up
112
00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:22.879
the top inch or two of soil in the tree
113
00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:26.360
pit at least twice a year. You'd like to plant
114
00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:29.839
flowers at the base of your city tree. Drought tolerant
115
00:08:29.839 --> 00:08:33.399
plants are a good choice. Can also find suggestions by
116
00:08:33.480 --> 00:08:37.399
checking the local planting guidelines for your city. Spreading some
117
00:08:37.480 --> 00:08:41.399
composts and then mulch in spring and fall helps feed
118
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:45.679
a tree, protects the soil from compaction and keeps it
119
00:08:45.720 --> 00:08:49.279
from drying out as quickly spread a three inch layer
120
00:08:49.480 --> 00:08:52.879
starting a few inches from the trunk. Don't leave lights
121
00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.879
or anything wrapped or tied around the tree trunk or
122
00:08:55.960 --> 00:08:59.080
limbs for longer than a year or two. That would
123
00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:01.879
be like you growing up while wearing the same pair
124
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:04.960
of pants. When we are friends with trees, we help
125
00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:10.120
each other thrive, even on crowded city streets. Our next
126
00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:13.879
story is called The Shady Tree and it was published
127
00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:17.960
by Henry Holt and Company. It has the copyright year
128
00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:22.639
of twenty sixteen and it was written by Demy. Once
129
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:25.000
upon the time, in China, there was a very rich
130
00:09:25.080 --> 00:09:27.879
boy named Tan Tan who lived in a very big
131
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:31.200
house by the side of the road. The house was
132
00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:34.600
shaded by a very big tree where birds and animals
133
00:09:34.759 --> 00:09:40.480
loved to play. Tan Tan also loved to play in
134
00:09:40.480 --> 00:09:43.919
the shade of the tree with its very expensive toys.
135
00:09:44.440 --> 00:09:47.879
One afternoon, a very poor boy named Ping came and
136
00:09:47.960 --> 00:09:51.039
sat down under the tree. Tan Tan did not like
137
00:09:51.159 --> 00:09:55.039
this at all. Get up, get up, get up, he shouted.
138
00:09:55.399 --> 00:09:59.240
You cannot stay here, but it is so nice, Ping said,
139
00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:03.799
Tan Tan protested, this is my tree. I own all
140
00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:06.759
of it, the trunk, the branches, the leaves, and the
141
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:11.960
shade everything. Pin thought, I couldn't possibly buy all that,
142
00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:15.200
but maybe I could afford to buy the shade, and
143
00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:18.399
that might be even better. Well, you sell me the
144
00:10:18.440 --> 00:10:24.039
shade of the tree, Pin ass Tang Tang. Greedy. Tang
145
00:10:24.759 --> 00:10:29.080
Tan loved money, and so he quickly answered why not,
146
00:10:29.399 --> 00:10:32.879
Thinking Pin was a silly goose. Pin gave Tang Tan
147
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:35.960
the two coins he had in his pocket, and the
148
00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:39.559
shade was sewed. Every day after that, Pin came to
149
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:42.200
sit in the shade of the tree wherever it happened
150
00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:45.960
to be, Pin sat in it. When the shade moved
151
00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:50.759
into Tang Tang's big house, salted Pin with his chickens
152
00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:55.200
and his water buffalo. When the shade moved into Tang
153
00:10:55.360 --> 00:10:59.360
Tan's bedroom, solded Pin. He took a nap right on
154
00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:03.840
tang tan spad. Often, Pin invited his many friends and
155
00:11:03.879 --> 00:11:07.360
their animals to sit in the shade too, wherever it
156
00:11:07.559 --> 00:11:12.120
happened to be. A day came when Tang Tang could
157
00:11:12.200 --> 00:11:15.519
stand this no longer. How dare you come into my
158
00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:18.840
big house and even into my bedroom with your animals
159
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:22.480
and friends. Get out, Get out, Get out, he screamed,
160
00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:26.600
but Pin continued as before before he had bobbed the
161
00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:31.879
shade of the tree. One day, Tang Tang was celebrating
162
00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:34.960
his birthday was his very rich friends. They were all
163
00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:39.240
seated around a big shaded table when Ping suddenly entered
164
00:11:39.320 --> 00:11:42.360
riting his water buffalo and then sat down at the
165
00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:45.480
table too. When the friends learned that Tang Tang had
166
00:11:45.480 --> 00:11:48.320
sold the shade to Pin, they all laughed and said,
167
00:11:49.080 --> 00:11:53.559
Tang Tang is a silly goose. This was too much
168
00:11:53.600 --> 00:11:57.279
for Tang Tang to bear. He moved away to another
169
00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:00.320
house where there were no shade, and there were no trees,
170
00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:05.039
and there were no friends. Meanwhile, Pe knows that the
171
00:12:05.080 --> 00:12:07.879
tree shaded some parts of the house all day and
172
00:12:07.960 --> 00:12:10.720
all night too, and so he moved into the empty house,
173
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:14.559
bringing his many friends and animals with him. He never
174
00:12:14.720 --> 00:12:17.879
turned away anyone who wanted to rest or to sing
175
00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:22.600
and dance in the beautiful shade of the shady tree.
176
00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:27.679
Non even Tang Tang. Our next set of stories are
177
00:12:27.720 --> 00:12:32.200
about feet, and the first one is titled Sandy Feet
178
00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:38.440
Whose Feet Footprints at the Shore. It was published by
179
00:12:39.639 --> 00:12:42.960
Sleeping Their Press. It has the copy right year of
180
00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:50.440
twenty nineteen and the author is Susan Wood's Sandy Feet
181
00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:55.440
on the beach make prints in the sand, digging feet
182
00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:59.799
very friendly, wet dogs lick your hands, waiting feet as
183
00:13:00.279 --> 00:13:05.799
piper hops, water, curls and sprays, crawling feet, click clack.
184
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:11.480
Crab scuttles on its way, stamping feet. Seagulls cry snacks
185
00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:16.240
for us to munch. Swimming feet, webbed and strong. Pelican
186
00:13:16.320 --> 00:13:20.919
scoops of lunch. Wriggling feet on five orange legs. Sea
187
00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:26.440
star makes its way feathering feet. Barnacles hide in shells
188
00:13:26.440 --> 00:13:30.679
of white and gray scooping feet. Sea turtle works time
189
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:35.519
to make her nest. Running feet, children play sand castles
190
00:13:35.559 --> 00:13:40.919
are the best. Buried feet, children laugh, daddy's toes poke
191
00:13:41.080 --> 00:13:46.000
through tired feet. Sun goes down Johns and eyes closed
192
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:51.919
to sandy Feet on the beach, leaves Prince in the Sand.
193
00:13:52.960 --> 00:13:56.360
Our next book is called good Night Feet, and it
194
00:13:56.480 --> 00:14:00.399
was published by Henry Hote and Company. Has Caught the
195
00:14:00.639 --> 00:14:03.440
Bright Year of nineteen ninety one, and it was written
196
00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:09.639
by Constance Morgan Stern. Good Night feet, you've worked hard today.
197
00:14:09.879 --> 00:14:12.960
I need you feet to run and play. You galloped
198
00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:16.120
and skipped and pedaled about. Thank you feet for not
199
00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:19.600
wearing out. But the sheets are cool and clean in
200
00:14:19.679 --> 00:14:24.840
my bed. Snug in feet rest instead. Good Night head.
201
00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:27.840
I know a spot for heads that get heavy from
202
00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:31.639
holding a lot. My pillow will cradle you safe and
203
00:14:31.799 --> 00:14:36.720
sound until the morning comes around. Good Night hands, you're
204
00:14:36.759 --> 00:14:40.200
really neat. You helped me color, you helped me eat.
205
00:14:40.840 --> 00:14:44.480
You held tight to mom when we were across the street.
206
00:14:45.240 --> 00:14:47.840
I think by now you must be beat. So after
207
00:14:47.879 --> 00:14:50.759
all our prayers, just pull up the sheet. You can
208
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:53.440
hold my teddy if it's fine with you. But if
209
00:14:53.480 --> 00:14:57.879
you're too tired, that's okay too. Good Night mouth, and
210
00:14:57.919 --> 00:15:01.679
now you must keep quiet so my ear can sleep. No,
211
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:05.480
we're talking for you today, but I think that yawning's okay,
212
00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:09.960
and kissing good too. When It's time for bed. If
213
00:15:09.960 --> 00:15:13.000
you don't wake up the rest of my head. Good
214
00:15:13.080 --> 00:15:16.720
night ears, My pillows soft. My house is quiet, and
215
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:19.799
you can turn off just as Mom turns off the light.
216
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.159
But wait till after she says good night. Good night eyes.
217
00:15:24.360 --> 00:15:28.440
The room is great. Everything is tucked away. My feet,
218
00:15:28.519 --> 00:15:31.919
my hands might bare, my head, my mouth, my ears
219
00:15:32.120 --> 00:15:34.720
all gone to bed. So good night eyes. It is
220
00:15:34.759 --> 00:15:37.919
time for you to start to pull your shades down too.
221
00:15:38.440 --> 00:15:43.639
There's nothing else to see. Good night eyes, good night me.
222
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:48.879
Our next story is titled The Foot Book, and it
223
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:54.000
was published by random House Children's Books, a division of Penguin.
224
00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:58.320
Random House has a copyright of year of nineteen sixty
225
00:15:58.360 --> 00:16:02.720
eight to nineteen ninety six, and it was written by
226
00:16:02.799 --> 00:16:08.399
doctor Seuss. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right feet
227
00:16:08.399 --> 00:16:11.759

231
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:35.440
slow feet, quick feet, trick feet, sick feet, up feet,
232
00:16:35.639 --> 00:16:40.360
down feet. Here come clown feet, small feet, big feet.
233
00:16:40.399 --> 00:16:44.960
Here come pig feet, his feet, her feet, fuzzy fur
234
00:16:45.080 --> 00:16:49.080
feet in the house and on the street. How many
235
00:16:49.159 --> 00:16:53.039
many feet you meet? Up in the air, feet over
236
00:16:53.120 --> 00:16:58.120
a chair, feet, more and more feet twenty four feet
237
00:16:58.519 --> 00:17:02.519
here come more and more and more feet left, foot,
238
00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:07.640
right foot feet feet, feet, Oh, how many feet you meet?
239
00:17:08.640 --> 00:17:11.759
Our next story is called Look What Feet Can Do
240
00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:16.680
and it was published by a Learner Publications Company, a
241
00:17:16.759 --> 00:17:22.000
division of Learner Public Machine Group, has a copywriter of
242
00:17:22.039 --> 00:17:28.160
two thousand and seven and the author is DMSUSA. Look around,
243
00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:33.640
feeter everywhere, feeder walking, running, skipping, dancing, kicking and climbing.
244
00:17:34.039 --> 00:17:37.599
Acrobats are hanging upside down by their feet. Children with
245
00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:41.359
wheels on their feet are skating. Adults with skis on
246
00:17:41.400 --> 00:17:45.799
their feet are sailing down hillsides. It's awesome what human
247
00:17:45.880 --> 00:17:50.160
feet can do. Feet coming all colors and sizes. They
248
00:17:50.200 --> 00:17:55.119
help people move from one place to another. Other animals
249
00:17:55.119 --> 00:17:58.880
to amazing things with their feet too. And ostrich for example,
250
00:17:59.200 --> 00:18:02.640
is the world's just living dirt. Its feet are powerful.
251
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:06.680
One quick from an Ostrichus foot can kill a lion.
252
00:18:07.160 --> 00:18:10.559
Some animals use their feet to catch fish, Some climb
253
00:18:10.640 --> 00:18:14.359
glass walls or walk on water. Other animals flirt, send
254
00:18:14.440 --> 00:18:17.920
messages or fight with their feet. We're about to meet
255
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:23.880
a few of these far out feet digging machine, the
256
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:27.000
metal is still in quiet. A badger catches the scent
257
00:18:27.160 --> 00:18:30.160
of a gopher. The badger flops on its stomach and
258
00:18:30.279 --> 00:18:34.279
puts its chin on the edge of the gopher's hideout. Next,
259
00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:37.920
the badger's huge front feet scoop of dirt and toss
260
00:18:37.960 --> 00:18:41.640
it under its belly. Its back feet kick everything into
261
00:18:41.680 --> 00:18:44.680
the air. The animal looks as if it's swimming in
262
00:18:44.720 --> 00:18:48.440
clouds of dirt and dust. Minutes the badger will enjoy
263
00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:52.799
a meal. Few prey can escape once this animal starts digging.
264
00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:56.440
When digging, badgers loosen the dirt with their front feet
265
00:18:56.599 --> 00:18:59.200
and push it under their belly. Then they kick it
266
00:18:59.279 --> 00:19:03.279
out of the and with their back feet. The badger
267
00:19:03.400 --> 00:19:06.440
sometimes travels as many as eight miles in one night.
268
00:19:06.839 --> 00:19:11.119
When the animal gets tired, it stops its feet dig
269
00:19:11.200 --> 00:19:14.599
a burrow where the badger can nap. If a bear
270
00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:18.480
or a mountain lion corners it, those same feet work
271
00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:21.440
at top speed. They can dig an escape hole in
272
00:19:21.519 --> 00:19:25.039
less than two minutes. Claws on the badger's front feet
273
00:19:25.039 --> 00:19:29.039
are almost as long as its toes. Skin between the
274
00:19:29.119 --> 00:19:32.880
toes gives them added strength. Hind feet or spoon shaped
275
00:19:32.920 --> 00:19:36.160
to scoop away dirt. Everything about the badger makes it
276
00:19:36.240 --> 00:19:41.160
a perfect digging machine. A badger's front feet each have
277
00:19:41.400 --> 00:19:46.680
five toes with claws up to two inches deadly feet.
278
00:19:47.119 --> 00:19:50.000
A red tail howk looks down from a perch high
279
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:53.599
in a tree. Its scaly, knobby feet rest on a branch.
280
00:19:54.079 --> 00:19:58.559
Four toes are tipped with long, pointed nails. The bird's
281
00:19:58.640 --> 00:20:02.359
nails are called telm They are as sharp as daggers.
282
00:20:02.759 --> 00:20:05.839
The hawk spots a snake moving in the field below.
283
00:20:06.319 --> 00:20:10.359
Jumping into the wind with outstretched wings, the bird flies up.
284
00:20:10.519 --> 00:20:13.680
It circles the field a few times, and then dives.
285
00:20:14.599 --> 00:20:18.599
A red tailed hawk sits very still up in a tree,
286
00:20:18.680 --> 00:20:22.240
waiting to spot its prey. The eyesight of a hawk
287
00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:28.079
is eight times as powerful as a human's. Just before
288
00:20:28.160 --> 00:20:31.839
reaching the snake, the hawk stretches out its legs and toes.
289
00:20:32.240 --> 00:20:36.279
Feet lock onto the prey. Tealons pierce its flesh until
290
00:20:36.279 --> 00:20:39.960
the snake is lifeless. In minutes, the hawk flies away
291
00:20:39.960 --> 00:20:42.920
with its meal. The red trailed hawk is not the
292
00:20:42.960 --> 00:20:47.920
only bird with daily feet. Other hawks, falcons, vultures, eagles,
293
00:20:47.920 --> 00:20:51.960
and owls have them too. These birds are known as raptures.
294
00:20:52.519 --> 00:20:55.279
Long ago, the word meant to grab by force, and
295
00:20:55.319 --> 00:20:59.960
that's what raptors do with their feet. When getting ready
296
00:20:59.920 --> 00:21:03.039
to a tiger spray, the hawks diffens its legs and
297
00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:06.960
pushes its tail ons forward. It uses its tails and
298
00:21:07.039 --> 00:21:12.440
wings to slow down. Sticky hairs. A gecko climbs a
299
00:21:12.440 --> 00:21:15.680
glass wall and walks across a ceiling. Then it hangs
300
00:21:15.720 --> 00:21:18.839
the place by only one toe. How does it do that?
301
00:21:19.200 --> 00:21:22.720
Beneath each of the gecko's toes are thousands of thin hairs.
302
00:21:23.480 --> 00:21:25.839
They are ten times thinner than a single hair on
303
00:21:25.880 --> 00:21:29.599
your head. A million gecko hairs could easily fit on
304
00:21:29.680 --> 00:21:32.519
the top of a penny. Gecko hairs may be thin,
305
00:21:32.759 --> 00:21:35.799
but they are strong. A single one could hold an ant.
306
00:21:36.279 --> 00:21:39.759
Several thousand can easily hold the gecko as it hangs
307
00:21:40.279 --> 00:21:44.240
by one toe. A gecko can walk up glass and
308
00:21:44.279 --> 00:21:48.400
across ceilings because of its amazing feet. When the gecko
309
00:21:48.559 --> 00:21:52.759
takes a step, its hairs row onto the surface until
310
00:21:52.839 --> 00:21:56.200
they stick. As the animal moves along, it peels the
311
00:21:56.279 --> 00:22:00.799
hairs away like tape. Stick peels, stick peel. Gecko never
312
00:22:00.880 --> 00:22:04.240
slips or falls. Scientists are trying to make hairs like
313
00:22:04.319 --> 00:22:07.599
those on the gecko's feet. They hope someday to attach
314
00:22:07.680 --> 00:22:12.200
them to material humans can wear. Then maybe we will
315
00:22:12.240 --> 00:22:15.279
be able to walk up glass walls and across ceilings
316
00:22:15.359 --> 00:22:19.720
like the get Go Stick Peels Stick Peel. The undersides
317
00:22:19.759 --> 00:22:23.240
of the gecko's feet have sole and toe pads. These
318
00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:27.680
pads are covered with around five hundred thousand sticky hairs.
319
00:22:29.000 --> 00:22:32.880
Water skis a lizard suns itself next to a stream
320
00:22:33.359 --> 00:22:36.480
in Central America. The creature belongs to a group of
321
00:22:36.519 --> 00:22:42.160
lizards in the iguana family known as basel licks. Like dinosaurs,
322
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:46.400
basel licks can run on two feet. The lizard's large,
323
00:22:46.440 --> 00:22:50.559
bulging eyes look nervously around. The creature senses that something
324
00:22:50.640 --> 00:22:55.400
is coming. It may be time to run. The snake
325
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:58.400
crawls into the open quickly. The lizard stands up on
326
00:22:58.480 --> 00:23:02.200
its hind legs. It's large web feet race over the ground.
327
00:23:02.519 --> 00:23:08.400
Sharp claws barely touch the earth. The basil licks have
328
00:23:08.680 --> 00:23:12.559
long legs and long toes with sharp claws. This helps
329
00:23:12.599 --> 00:23:17.440
them run fast. The lizard reaches the stream's edge, but
330
00:23:17.519 --> 00:23:20.359
it does not stop. It runs across the water and
331
00:23:20.559 --> 00:23:24.799
does not sink. The lizard's feet are so big it's
332
00:23:24.839 --> 00:23:29.519
as though it's wearing water skis. The basalisk can run
333
00:23:29.680 --> 00:23:32.799
about seven miles an ire. As long as it moves quickly,
334
00:23:32.880 --> 00:23:36.000
it will not sink in the water. If it slows down,
335
00:23:36.119 --> 00:23:39.039
it will go under. Even if the lizard sinks, it
336
00:23:39.079 --> 00:23:42.279
still has a chance to escape. Its web feet helped
337
00:23:42.279 --> 00:23:45.920
it swim below the surface. Predators look around, but they
338
00:23:45.960 --> 00:23:49.880
cannot find the water skin lizard. Now you see it,
339
00:23:50.200 --> 00:23:55.039
Now you don't. The lizard is running fast across the water.
340
00:23:55.119 --> 00:23:57.400
If it slows down, it will drop into the water
341
00:23:57.960 --> 00:24:03.720
and swim the rest of its way cozy feet. In March,
342
00:24:03.880 --> 00:24:08.680
cold winter winds flow across Antarctica, the sun never shines,
343
00:24:08.720 --> 00:24:11.319
and the seas or ice. It is so cold that
344
00:24:11.440 --> 00:24:15.359
human skin can freeze in seconds. During this time of year,
345
00:24:15.559 --> 00:24:20.960
most animals leave Antarctica for warmer places, but thousands of
346
00:24:21.160 --> 00:24:24.920
imperior penguins arrive to find mates. They are the only
347
00:24:24.960 --> 00:24:28.359
birds to breed or have their young during winter. After
348
00:24:28.400 --> 00:24:31.559
a penguin pair mates, the female weighs a single egg.
349
00:24:32.039 --> 00:24:35.240
The male wriggles the egg onto his feet, then he
350
00:24:35.359 --> 00:24:38.519
covers it with a warm layer of his belly skin.
351
00:24:39.240 --> 00:24:42.839
A male emperor penguin looks at the egg he is
352
00:24:42.960 --> 00:24:48.079
keeping warm on his feet. A few days later, the
353
00:24:48.119 --> 00:24:51.000
female penguins leave. They will spend almost two months at
354
00:24:51.039 --> 00:24:55.079
sea searching for food. The meantime, their mates will keep
355
00:24:55.119 --> 00:24:58.920
the eggs warm. Males do nothing but huddle together. They
356
00:24:58.920 --> 00:25:01.440
eat nothing and can and lose almost half their weight,
357
00:25:01.759 --> 00:25:05.279
but the eggs remain warm and safe on their feet.
358
00:25:05.759 --> 00:25:09.599
After the young hatch, the females return and cough up
359
00:25:09.680 --> 00:25:13.440
food for their young. Chicks move into their mother's feet,
360
00:25:13.519 --> 00:25:17.160
and hungry males leave on their own fishing trips. For
361
00:25:17.279 --> 00:25:20.359
two more months, the chicks remain cozy and warm on
362
00:25:20.400 --> 00:25:24.200
their mother's feet. A chick is keeping warm on its
363
00:25:24.279 --> 00:25:27.440
mother's feet. When it becomes older, it will wander out
364
00:25:27.799 --> 00:25:33.319
on its own fishing feet. The large pond is dark
365
00:25:33.359 --> 00:25:37.720
and still. Suddenly, tiny splashing sounds break the silent. The
366
00:25:37.799 --> 00:25:42.079
noises are repeated again and again. Fishing bats are at work.
367
00:25:42.559 --> 00:25:46.200
These unusual bats live near water in Central and South America.
368
00:25:46.559 --> 00:25:49.559
They have long hind legs and feet much bigger than
369
00:25:49.599 --> 00:25:53.799
those of other bats. Their wings are huge. During the day,
370
00:25:53.920 --> 00:25:57.680
the bats sleep in caves, hollow trees, or rock piles.
371
00:25:58.000 --> 00:26:02.519
A few even rest under large empty turtle shells. All
372
00:26:02.839 --> 00:26:08.279
their hideout smell fishy. Fishing bats have long hind legs
373
00:26:08.319 --> 00:26:11.559
and huge hind feet. Their feet are two to four
374
00:26:11.640 --> 00:26:17.240
times longer than those of other bats. This concludes the
