00:00:31.967 --> 00:00:34.927
Hello, and welcome back to today's episode.
00:00:35.298 --> 00:00:36.688
Thank you for being here.
00:00:36.957 --> 00:00:58.008
in today's episode, you're gonna learn why worrying about your teenager and their future doesn't actually benefit either you or your teen, and how, in most cases, it actually makes things a little bit harder because it's making you emotionally experience this thing that you're afraid of happening.
00:00:58.258 --> 00:01:05.128
and I'm gonna share with you a real-life scenario where I had to deal with worry.
00:01:05.548 --> 00:01:24.188
And looking back, honestly, for about three days, I was just completely focused that everything that could go wrong would go wrong, and I was busy focusing on things that are not in my control, and it just made that time miserable.
00:01:24.918 --> 00:01:38.968
And you're also going to learn how to practice hope, confidence, optimism without ignoring real problems and pretending that just everything is perfect and hunky-dory.
00:01:39.367 --> 00:01:49.927
So let's just dive into today's content, and, yeah, I- I'm gonna just start by sharing, I had to deal with an upset parent recently.
00:01:50.528 --> 00:01:58.768
And I don't wanna give too many details, but, This is something I don't think very many people like confrontation.
00:01:59.298 --> 00:02:05.927
I don't maybe shy away from it as much as some people because in football coaching, in being...
00:02:06.328 --> 00:02:08.897
I'm on a governing board for our local credit union.
00:02:08.937 --> 00:02:15.578
As a principal, I had to deal with a lot of confrontation, and yet I still don't like it.
00:02:16.068 --> 00:02:19.627
And this one came out of the blue, just completely shocked me.
00:02:20.068 --> 00:02:24.777
And for about three days, I lost sleep.
00:02:25.147 --> 00:02:27.657
I had more heartburn than normal.
00:02:28.087 --> 00:02:29.608
I was just stressing.
00:02:30.138 --> 00:02:40.268
And at one point I was like,"Why am I so worried about this?" And I realized I was worried about all these things that were outside of my control.
00:02:40.627 --> 00:02:42.048
Well, what if she yells at me?
00:02:42.497 --> 00:02:42.848
What if...
00:02:42.997 --> 00:02:44.288
Like, what's she gonna say?
00:02:44.288 --> 00:02:44.978
What's she gonna do?
00:02:44.978 --> 00:02:48.068
What are these other people involved going to think?
00:02:48.657 --> 00:02:51.298
What if I say the wrong thing?
00:02:51.698 --> 00:03:06.877
And I carried that around with me for three days leading up to this actual event, and I would feel it when I went to bed, I would feel it when I woke up, and oftentimes there was just a pit in my stomach throughout the day.
00:03:07.277 --> 00:03:10.388
And then the meeting happened, and it was fine.
00:03:10.948 --> 00:03:17.707
And all that fear, it didn't predict the future, and it didn't protect me.
00:03:18.108 --> 00:03:20.508
It didn't make the meeting go any better.
00:03:20.897 --> 00:03:24.168
It just wasted three days of my life.
00:03:24.687 --> 00:03:31.668
And the truth is, if you are anything like me, you have probably done this exact same thing.
00:03:32.068 --> 00:03:44.538
You mentally rehearse, well, what if our son fails a class, or what if he doesn't make the team, or what if he gets addicted, or what if he's living in our basement at age 35?
00:03:44.937 --> 00:03:55.608
And for some reason, we expect that this Worry beforehand is going to help, but the truth is, it doesn't really help.
00:03:56.018 --> 00:04:03.867
So, if you're worried about an argument that you might have with your son about video games or a cell phone, I promise you, it doesn't help.
00:04:04.207 --> 00:04:08.967
And if you don't believe me, go ahead, worry about it, and then observe the conversation.
00:04:09.117 --> 00:04:10.888
See if it helped or anything.
00:04:11.288 --> 00:04:23.197
The truth is, it probably makes it a little bit harder because now you're walking into the conversation, you're tense, you're afraid, your fight or flight has been triggered, and you're ready to go to battle.
00:04:23.598 --> 00:04:50.327
And so today, I wanna talk to you about what happens to you as a mom when you stop practicing this future fear, when you stop mentally and emotionally rehearsing the exact thing that you're afraid of, and then you just re-harness that energy and put it to work rehearsing being the mom that you want to be.
00:04:50.665 --> 00:04:54.095
So, let's talk about the problem that's easy to see.
00:04:54.634 --> 00:04:56.444
A lot of parents are stressed.
00:04:56.625 --> 00:04:58.254
I just read a study.
00:04:58.254 --> 00:05:06.514
They're like,"Man, we talked about teens having anxiety and having all this stress and worry in their lives." Their parents are just as bad.
00:05:06.915 --> 00:05:15.165
And my thing is, like, a lot of parents come to me and ask,"Well, how do I help my teen stress out less?" And the answer is, be the change that you want to see.
00:05:15.634 --> 00:05:17.154
You stress out less.
00:05:17.204 --> 00:05:20.055
You learn how to manage your mind and your emotions.
00:05:20.454 --> 00:05:29.274
And so if you are stressed about your teen's grades or their future or a possible argument, don't feel like you're alone in this.
00:05:29.345 --> 00:05:31.584
A lot of people struggle with this.
00:05:31.985 --> 00:05:40.704
But the truth is The worries, the fear, the anxiety, none of those are really serving you as a parent.
00:05:41.214 --> 00:05:43.365
And in fact, they're holding you back.
00:05:43.764 --> 00:05:49.495
These emotions of fear, stress, worry, they can lead to sleepless nights.
00:05:49.875 --> 00:05:59.035
They can lead to you reminding your teenager constantly so they don't forget, or turning into lecture mom or lecture dad, or just over-explaining.
00:05:59.504 --> 00:06:04.194
It can lead to you really locking down and trying to control your teen.
00:06:04.595 --> 00:06:11.235
And it can lead to emotionally reacting more negatively and more extreme.
00:06:11.634 --> 00:06:15.675
And it takes away your ability to enjoy your teenager.
00:06:16.074 --> 00:06:18.875
But I promise you, like, that's what we can see on the surface.
00:06:19.175 --> 00:06:24.855
There is a deeper pattern at play, and it isn't just simply negative thinking.
00:06:24.855 --> 00:06:29.045
A lot of people are like,"Oh, just stop thinking negatively." Yeah, that's nice.
00:06:29.185 --> 00:06:30.454
I watched something recently.
00:06:30.495 --> 00:06:33.615
It's like you can't just stop thinking negatively.
00:06:34.125 --> 00:06:38.954
You actually have to replace the negative thinking with something different.
00:06:39.355 --> 00:06:41.725
with more positive thinking.
00:06:42.125 --> 00:06:48.444
And so a lot of parents, they subconsciously believe that,"Man, I'm a good parent because I'm worried about it.
00:06:48.834 --> 00:06:52.644
me worrying, me stressing, that's just because I love my teen so much.
00:06:52.644 --> 00:07:04.975
I can't prevent it." And the truth is, your mind doesn't just think about the future, it starts to emotionally experience that future right now.
00:07:05.574 --> 00:07:28.384
And so you might think,"Oh, well, I'm just this stressed because I'm a good mom." But the truth is, that stress, your mind is like,"Okay, well, let's emotionally prepare for this right now." Your mind subconsciously starts to believe that that's the reality, and then you start to respond to that mentally, emotionally, and behaviorally.
00:07:28.785 --> 00:07:30.504
This happens in movies.
00:07:30.935 --> 00:07:34.334
Like, you can go watch a horror show and you know that it's not real.
00:07:34.334 --> 00:07:46.245
You know that you are in a movie theater with a bunch of people eating popcorn and drinking soda, and there's no such thing as the monsters that are up on the screen, and yet you jump, your heart races.
00:07:46.644 --> 00:07:52.805
Because what we perceive subconsciously, we start to believe.
00:07:53.204 --> 00:08:03.334
And a lot of times, when parents start to believe that,"Man, my teen missed one assignment, he's never gonna graduate now," or,"He's arguing with me.
00:08:03.375 --> 00:08:14.824
He's just disrespectful." Or a teen who plays video games for several hours, like,"Man, oh, he will never learn responsibility." And the truth is, these are thoughts.
00:08:14.884 --> 00:08:23.925
These are ways that you are choosing to perceive your reality, which leads to how you interact with reality emotionally.
00:08:24.324 --> 00:08:39.705
And oftentimes, the parents stop being the parents that they want to be because they are so busy focusing on,"How do I avoid this disaster that I'm sure is gonna happen?" Even though it only exists in their mind.
00:08:40.105 --> 00:08:45.384
The good news is we can change this aspect of parenting.
00:08:45.784 --> 00:08:50.735
The old belief is like,"Hey, no, worrying, it helps me prepare for what could go wrong.
00:08:51.115 --> 00:08:52.684
It shows that I'm a good mom.
00:08:52.684 --> 00:09:04.245
It helps me get ready for the situation." Instead, you can explore this: What if I can care deeply without emotionally rehearsing disaster?
00:09:04.644 --> 00:09:09.794
What if worry isn't the same as loving or being a good parent?
00:09:10.195 --> 00:09:28.674
We can start to explore like, yeah, I can care deeply, but I can also optimistically hope for what could go right rather than pessimistically worrying about all the things that could go wrong And this doesn't mean that you know everything is gonna work out exactly how you want, because it doesn't.
00:09:29.044 --> 00:09:39.335
Like the interaction with this parent didn't necessarily work out exactly how I wanted, but it worked out how it worked out, and I have the confidence that, man, I can handle that.
00:09:39.904 --> 00:09:41.315
I'm sure she can handle that.
00:09:41.315 --> 00:09:45.774
Like, I'm just gonna trust myself and my ability to handle hard things.
00:09:46.174 --> 00:09:51.365
And as a parent, if you can move from,"Oh my goodness, I'm so worried about this.
00:09:51.384 --> 00:09:53.754
Like, what if, what if this thing happens?
00:09:53.754 --> 00:09:57.695
What if I can't handle it?" What if you can shift that to like,"You know what?
00:09:57.825 --> 00:09:59.325
I can handle hard things.
00:09:59.725 --> 00:10:06.184
I can care about my teenager without catastrophizing and worrying about everything that could go wrong.
00:10:06.585 --> 00:10:30.254
I can just trust that whatever happens, I trust myself and I trust my teenager to be able to handle the next step." And that's important because I'm not telling you that,"Oh, just think positively and nothing bad will happen." The truth is, I'm telling you, stop making yourself suffer over a future that hasn't even happened emotionally, mentally.
00:10:30.745 --> 00:10:45.365
Stop making yourself experience this and suffer, and just show up in reality as reality is and as it unfolds, and just practice being the type of parent that you want to be.
00:10:45.764 --> 00:10:53.485
When it comes to how your mind works, your mind is going to find evidence that supports what you already believe.
00:10:53.884 --> 00:11:12.195
If you believe that your teen is just super disrespectful, every time your teen rolls his eyes or has a short answer or pushes back, you're gonna believe,"Oh my goodness, he's so disrespectful." If you already believe,"Man, my teen is so lazy," you're gonna notice everything your teen isn't doing.
00:11:12.394 --> 00:11:16.184
You're gonna overreact to when your teen is playing video games.
00:11:16.585 --> 00:11:21.105
But if you can believe, my teen has the power to figure this out.
00:11:21.504 --> 00:11:33.945
My teen can handle disappointment," it means that your mind starts filtering out all the negative things that could go wrong and starts exploring all the things that could go right.
00:11:34.345 --> 00:11:38.534
And you don't always have to just get into the catastrophizing.
00:11:38.914 --> 00:11:46.225
You don't have to accept when your teen refuses to do homework, but you can start to see it through a different light.
00:11:46.625 --> 00:11:54.115
Even if my teen chooses not to do homework, I'm sure he's gonna be okay, rather than,"Oh my goodness, my teen's not doing homework.
00:11:54.125 --> 00:11:55.355
What if he drops out of high school?
00:11:55.355 --> 00:11:56.544
What if he doesn't go to college?
00:11:56.544 --> 00:12:06.695
What if he lives in my basement until he's 35?" You have the power to change the story, to change the narrative in your mind about what's going on.
00:12:07.095 --> 00:12:13.735
And the truth is, worry and fear will make you experience more pain.
00:12:14.134 --> 00:12:17.784
Like, say the thing that you're scared of happening actually does happen.
00:12:18.174 --> 00:12:31.735
If you spent three days worrying about it leading up, now you've experienced the pain of the three days like I did stressing out about this meeting, and you're experiencing it again, only now in reality.
00:12:32.134 --> 00:12:35.335
Why not just experience it once in reality?
00:12:35.735 --> 00:12:39.914
You don't have to pre-suffer to prepare yourself.
00:12:40.335 --> 00:12:46.504
And a lot of parents are disconnecting from their teenagers because they are pre-suffering.
00:12:47.034 --> 00:12:53.335
They are worried about what could go wrong, and they're just living in a state of fear.
00:12:53.875 --> 00:12:57.315
Now, I wanna quickly give you an example of the opposite.
00:12:57.715 --> 00:13:08.475
I don't know if you know this about me, but Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite holiday, especially when my birthday falls within, like, the break from school and work, and we get Thanksgiving.
00:13:08.875 --> 00:13:13.575
I spend a good two weeks just looking forward to Thanksgiving.
00:13:14.095 --> 00:13:15.634
And I plan my Thanksgiving.
00:13:15.634 --> 00:13:26.514
I imagine how good the food's gonna be, how fun it's gonna be to hang out with my friends and family and play board games, to play our annual Turkey Bowl, and I just look forward to it.
00:13:26.605 --> 00:13:27.934
I'm so excited.
00:13:27.934 --> 00:13:28.934
I just can't wait.
00:13:29.335 --> 00:13:38.294
And the truth is, that's the exact same skill that the brain is using when it catastrophizes, and it worries, and it just hyper-focuses on what could go wrong.
00:13:38.695 --> 00:13:45.274
It's the same skill, like when I imagine how great Thanksgiving will be and how everything is just gonna go great.
00:13:45.674 --> 00:13:52.504
And your brain knows how to predict the future and practice the future.
00:13:53.105 --> 00:13:53.855
We've seen it.
00:13:53.934 --> 00:13:56.205
It does it when you're stressed and when you're worried.
00:13:56.605 --> 00:13:59.904
We've seen it in my life when I'm excited for Thanksgiving.
00:13:59.904 --> 00:14:01.975
I'm predicting what might happen in the future.
00:14:02.205 --> 00:14:04.815
I'm predicting how I'm gonna feel, what I'm gonna be like.
00:14:05.215 --> 00:14:10.424
The question is, which future you do you want to practice?
00:14:10.825 --> 00:14:15.095
If you're like the parents that I work with, fear will change you.
00:14:15.264 --> 00:14:18.254
It will change how you handle tough parenting situations.
00:14:18.575 --> 00:14:20.764
It will change how you connect with your teen.
00:14:21.105 --> 00:14:23.764
It will change how you show up as a mom.
00:14:24.294 --> 00:14:30.804
Worried parents have worried thoughts, and they focus on that, and they have a hard time connecting with their teen.
00:14:31.195 --> 00:14:35.014
They lose control of their voice, their body language, the way they behave.
00:14:35.414 --> 00:14:37.115
But the same is true for the other end.
00:14:37.514 --> 00:14:43.625
Confident parents, optimistic parents, they focus on what could go right.
00:14:44.075 --> 00:14:47.085
They just trust,"Hey, my teen's gonna be okay.
00:14:47.134 --> 00:14:47.825
I'll be okay.
00:14:47.825 --> 00:14:52.475
I can handle this." And it changes how you show up as a parent.
00:14:52.875 --> 00:15:07.274
And the deeper thing, like we can focus just on the anxiety and the stress and the worry, but the deeper root cause is the pattern of stress and worry and focusing on the things outside of your control.
00:15:07.794 --> 00:15:25.514
And the truth is, if you can address this at the root, and if you can start practicing changing your focus and showing up with a different identity, if rather than focusing on everything that could go wrong, you just trust,"No, I-- everything has always worked out.
00:15:25.955 --> 00:15:27.184
Like I'm still here.
00:15:27.195 --> 00:15:28.394
It's still working out.
00:15:28.774 --> 00:15:34.424
I trust it will continue to work out," it will change how you show up as a parent.
00:15:34.975 --> 00:15:39.524
And it doesn't mean that you allow disrespect and ignore failing grades.
00:15:40.054 --> 00:15:44.284
It means that you look at the same issues through a new lens.
00:15:44.684 --> 00:15:45.554
And it's okay.
00:15:45.554 --> 00:15:49.725
this can be hard, but I'm capable of doing hard things.
00:15:50.235 --> 00:15:55.245
I don't know exactly how this will turn out, but I trust that my teen will be able to handle it.
00:15:55.394 --> 00:16:00.034
I trust that I will be able to handle it I wanna leave you with this one thing.
00:16:00.434 --> 00:16:10.465
You have more power to be the parent of your dreams than you realize, and if you are parenting out of fear, I promise you, you are holding yourself back.
