इस एपिसोड के बारे में
Every day, we throw away something that still has value. A bottle hits the trash, a piece of plastic disappears into a river, and somewhere in the same chain of waste, a person living in poverty is left without the opportunity they need to change their life.
What started with a plastic bottle led him to a much bigger question: could waste become a source of income, dignity, and opportunity for people who have been left out of the financial system?
In this episode of Decarbonizers, host Idrees Madni sits down with David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank, to unpack how he turned an overlooked, "worthless" material into a currency that's lifted communities across the Global South while pulling billions of bottles out of the world's oceans and rivers.
David traces the idea back to a single moment in 2013, watching an $80 3D-printed belt made from $10 of raw plastic, and realized that value was never about the material itself, but about how society perceives its shape. That insight became Plastic Bank: a global network that partners with schools to let families exchange plastic waste for cash, banking access, and even no-interest credit, all while diverting material back into the supply chains of brands like SC Johnson.
The conversation ranges from the economics of virgin plastic versus recycled material, to why David believes regulation (not market incentives alone) is what actually moves the needle, to the philosophical core of his work: that a "world without waste" is possible, but a world without plastic isn't, and shouldn't be. Along the way, David makes the case that shareholder-driven short-termism, not plastic itself, is the real obstacle to a circular economy.
Plastic is everywhere, but waste doesn't have to be. If this conversation changed the way you think about plastic, poverty, or what we throw away, explore Plastic Bank, support the work, and be part of building a world where materials have value and no longer become waste.
