Ghostly Encounters

WEBVTT
1
00:00:12.720 --> 00:00:17.239
One evening in eighteen eighty five, Sir Geordrey Sitwell was
2
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:20.760
celebrating his twenty fifth birthday by holding a party at
3
00:00:20.760 --> 00:00:25.760
his ancestral residence, Renishore Hall. Not long after the ladies
4
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:27.960
of the party had retired to their beds for the night,
5
00:00:28.600 --> 00:00:31.280
one female guest came back out of her bedroom to
6
00:00:31.320 --> 00:00:34.000
tell Sitwell that she could not sleep in that room
7
00:00:34.159 --> 00:00:37.119
he had given her. When he inquired why that was,
8
00:00:37.640 --> 00:00:40.840
she explained that she had felt something cold kissing her
9
00:00:40.880 --> 00:00:44.520
in bed. She was the only person staying in that room.
10
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:49.600
Sir Sitwell found this rather amusing. However, when his friend
11
00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:53.079
mister Turnbull heard about this, he had reason to pause
12
00:00:53.240 --> 00:00:57.640
because mister Turnbull explained that a few years earlier, another
13
00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:00.320
female guest who had slept in the same bedroom, had
14
00:01:00.359 --> 00:01:03.840
also asked to move rooms after fleeing her bedroom in
15
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:06.319
distress and telling all who would listen to her that
16
00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:09.719
she'd been lying in bed asleep when she'd been woken
17
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.280
by something ice cold kissing her on the lips. Still,
18
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:17.480
Sitwell was not impressed. He had once been in the
19
00:01:17.480 --> 00:01:21.239
newspapers for having debunked as seance as fake, and so
20
00:01:21.560 --> 00:01:25.319
he was a hardened skeptic. He felt that ghosts were
21
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:30.680
hallucinations or delirium, especially if her lady reported seeing one.
22
00:01:31.159 --> 00:01:34.760
Some years later, when renovations were being carried out on
23
00:01:35.159 --> 00:01:39.079
his ancestral home, workers discovered an empty coffin under the
24
00:01:39.079 --> 00:01:42.680
floorboards of the room both women had tried to sleep in.
25
00:01:43.799 --> 00:01:45.799
Who the coffin had been for and why it was
26
00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:49.560
now empty and hidden under the floorboards has never been solved.
27
00:01:51.239 --> 00:01:54.480
Glamys Castle was built in the fourteenth century and it's
28
00:01:54.519 --> 00:01:58.640
where the mother of Queen Elizabeth grew up. Is located
29
00:01:58.680 --> 00:02:02.000
beside the village of Glamys in Anger's, Scotland and set
30
00:02:02.040 --> 00:02:04.319
in the Lowland valley of Strathmore, with a land of
31
00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:07.760
more than forty acres. It has a reputation of being
32
00:02:07.799 --> 00:02:11.479
extremely haunted by a number of apparitions. The lady of
33
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:15.599
glamis Lady Janet Douglas, was accused of murdering her husband
34
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:19.520
by poisoning him and using witchcraft to destroy the King
35
00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:22.840
of Scotland, King James the Fifth. She was burnt at
36
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:26.520
the stake in fifteen thirty seven in Edinburgh. Though few
37
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:28.800
believed her to be guilty of the crimes for which
38
00:02:28.840 --> 00:02:31.800
she was charged, she has been seen running up the
39
00:02:31.840 --> 00:02:34.560
stairs of the clock tower, leaving a trail of ash
40
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:37.879
in her wake. But there's another female ghost and has
41
00:02:37.879 --> 00:02:40.719
a face and mouth but no tongue. She lurks in
42
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:44.080
the parks around in the castle. But the most notorious
43
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:46.919
ghost of the castle is the Earl of Crawford, a
44
00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:50.800
nobleman who visited the castle in the fifteenth century. The
45
00:02:50.879 --> 00:02:54.520
story goes that one night he got very drunk, and
46
00:02:54.599 --> 00:02:57.960
he demanded that someone among the other guests must play
47
00:02:58.120 --> 00:03:02.400
cards with him. The suburb was fast approaching and gambling
48
00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:06.000
was considered an inappropriate past time for a holy day,
49
00:03:06.599 --> 00:03:10.400
so there were no volunteers. In response to this, the
50
00:03:10.439 --> 00:03:13.680
Earl declared that he would play the devil himself. Then
51
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:17.120
it was not long after this declaration that a mysterious
52
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:20.240
headed man arrived at the castle, dressed completely in black,
53
00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:24.000
and offered to play the Earl at cards. One of
54
00:03:24.039 --> 00:03:27.039
the servants peeked through the keyhole to watch the Earl
55
00:03:27.039 --> 00:03:29.919
and the stranger, only to be blinded in one eye
56
00:03:29.960 --> 00:03:34.439
by a dazzlingly bright light. When morning came, the Earl
57
00:03:34.759 --> 00:03:38.639
had vanished. Visitors to the castle of reported hearing the
58
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:42.360
roll of dice. The clinging of glasses and voices swearing loudly.
59
00:03:43.080 --> 00:03:45.719
When the famous novelist saw Water Scott stayed there for
60
00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:49.280
the night. He wrote, as I heard door after doors shut,
61
00:03:49.400 --> 00:03:52.599
after my conductor had retired, I began to consider myself
62
00:03:52.599 --> 00:03:56.000
as too far from the living and somewhat too near
63
00:03:56.039 --> 00:03:59.960
to the dead. At this castle. There's also the legend
64
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:03.319
of the unknown prisoner who was held in a hidden chamber.
65
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:08.439
According to notes and queries, in this secret hidden chamber
66
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:11.599
was a monster who was the rightful heir to the
67
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:14.759
substantial property, but he was kept locked away because of
68
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:18.720
his appearance. He was deformed and completely horrifying to look at,
69
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:22.560
and described as a hairy toad, a creature too frightful
70
00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:26.319
to behold, with a huge round body in tiny arms
71
00:04:26.360 --> 00:04:30.319
and tiny legs. His room was bricked up after his death,
72
00:04:30.360 --> 00:04:33.720
it was said. The alternative version to this story is
73
00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:37.079
that in every generation of this family, a vampire child
74
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:39.920
is born, and the vampire children are all booked up
75
00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:45.720
in that room. Newspapers of January eighteen ninety eight reported
76
00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:49.399
a mysterious figure with a ghastly appearance of a headless
77
00:04:49.399 --> 00:04:55.000
woman who was haunting and isolated crossroads outside of Buckingham, England.
78
00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:00.560
This unpleasant apparition was witnessed first by a reputable landowner
79
00:05:00.600 --> 00:05:03.759
in the area and his companion, who had the unfortunate
80
00:05:03.800 --> 00:05:07.120
experience of encountering the phantom while out in their horse
81
00:05:07.160 --> 00:05:12.560
and trap, said the newspapers. The landowner later reported the
82
00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.319
night was advanced and dark. His horse began to tremble
83
00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:18.879
like a leaf. In front of them, they saw a
84
00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:22.519
black figure standing near a post at the crossroads. The
85
00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:25.879
figure was blocking their path, and the landowner called out
86
00:05:25.879 --> 00:05:28.120
to the figure, but there was no reply and it
87
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:31.639
did not move. As they came closer, they noticed that
88
00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:33.920
the figure appeared to be a woman, and his horse
89
00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:36.759
refused to go any further. What are you doing there?
90
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:40.519
Move along, the landowner said to the figure. Again. The
91
00:05:40.600 --> 00:05:44.279
landowner received no reply. The horse, however, now went into
92
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:46.560
a panic and began to back up until the trap
93
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:50.040
landed in a ditch, forcing the landowner and his companion
94
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:52.560
to jump out and seize its reins before it bolted.
95
00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:57.240
It was during this that the black apparition vanished. However,
96
00:05:57.360 --> 00:05:59.879
after the two men climbed back into the carriage in
97
00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:03.519
tending to leave the area in haste, the black headless
98
00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:07.519
figure of the woman appeared once more, standing completely motionless
99
00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:11.519
in the exact same position as before. The landowner, his
100
00:06:11.720 --> 00:06:15.639
nerve now completely gone, asked the black, motionless figure to
101
00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:19.000
answer him in the name of God. It was at
102
00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:22.079
these words that the spectral figure began to slowly move,
103
00:06:22.600 --> 00:06:25.079
drifting away until it appeared to float through a thick,
104
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:29.439
deep hedge beside where it had stood. The landowner and
105
00:06:29.480 --> 00:06:31.839
his companion were quick to leave the country lane as
106
00:06:31.879 --> 00:06:34.240
fast as the horse would travel. They were not the
107
00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:37.199
only ones, though, to encounter this jet black, headless specter,
108
00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:40.120
and as words spread, few became willing to use that
109
00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:45.480
route in the dark anymore. In nineteen o four, reports
110
00:06:45.560 --> 00:06:49.360
came from the Welsh village of Tondu in bridget County,
111
00:06:49.560 --> 00:06:53.959
but they had acquired a sinister inhabitant. The reports reached
112
00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:57.000
as far as Australia in the newspapers at the time
113
00:06:57.279 --> 00:07:01.519
as they regaled the readership with their exciting details. A
114
00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:06.120
ghostly reign of terror in Glamorganshire, exclaimed the headline of
115
00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:09.240
the South Wales Echo. For some time there had been
116
00:07:09.319 --> 00:07:13.079
talk of the disused colliery being haunted. Then, on an
117
00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:17.720
early September morning, workmen saw a tall specter shrouded in
118
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:21.040
white in the neighborhood of fell in Futch. The ghost
119
00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:24.879
glided towards them. Sockets where its eyes should have been
120
00:07:25.319 --> 00:07:29.879
were fixed straight ahead, and all twelve sturdy Welsh miners
121
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:33.759
took to their heels and fled. When they finally dared
122
00:07:33.800 --> 00:07:38.040
to look back the ghost, it disappeared. It was reportedly
123
00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:42.560
an extremely combative ghost that put twelve strong men to
124
00:07:42.600 --> 00:07:47.519
flight and wrestled with another. A servant girl reported seeing
125
00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:51.199
the fighting ghost stalking the ruins of the abandoned colliery,
126
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:56.600
uttering dismal groans and waving its arms about. The West
127
00:07:56.639 --> 00:07:59.720
Gippsland Gazette reported on the return of the ghost of Tondu,
128
00:08:00.279 --> 00:08:03.639
saying it has reasserted itself in the most aggressive manner.
129
00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:07.319
A respectable resident of the district was proceeding at midnight
130
00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:12.480
along a lonely narrow road adjoining the deserted buildings of
131
00:08:12.519 --> 00:08:16.560
the abandoned colliery when he was attacked by the unnatural monster.
132
00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:21.000
The gentleman is muscular, but the sight, which suddenly met
133
00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.279
his gaze at the far end of a bridge made
134
00:08:23.360 --> 00:08:28.199
him turn hot and cold. An exceptionally tall cadaverous figure
135
00:08:28.360 --> 00:08:34.159
was standing there, a silent, motionless sentinel. The head, as
136
00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:37.720
the frightened observer describes it, a death's head, covered with
137
00:08:37.799 --> 00:08:43.480
wrinkled parchment. The eyes were hollow sockets. Suddenly the thing
138
00:08:43.519 --> 00:08:49.200
advanced towards the trembling man, its arms long outstretched. It
139
00:08:49.279 --> 00:08:53.200
clasped him in a vice, and then began an uncanny
140
00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:57.960
tussle in the darkness. The resident felt himself held as
141
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:01.240
though in the folds of a python. He tried to flee,
142
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:04.600
but could not escape from the power of this supernatural assailant.
143
00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:08.919
Then it was gone. The women and children of Tondu
144
00:09:08.919 --> 00:09:12.919
were kept indoors after darkness fell, and bands of brave men,
145
00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:16.600
who armed themselves with pitchforks and bludgeons of many types,
146
00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:20.320
took to patrolling the dark country roads by night to
147
00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:23.960
attempt to slay the violent ghost. Willow Ward appear that
148
00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:27.799
at some point after this no sleighing actually took place,
149
00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:33.000
but somehow the fighting ghost of Tondu vanished. Perhaps it
150
00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:38.240
is simply relocated. On January the sixth, nineteen oh eight,
151
00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:42.919
the front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle declared
152
00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:46.120
that a terrified group in a car was stopped by
153
00:09:46.200 --> 00:09:50.320
police for driving at great speed through the Golden Gate Park.
154
00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:55.039
After being apprehended by police on horses, the newspaper rights
155
00:09:55.240 --> 00:09:59.360
asking the driver why he'd been driving so fast, police
156
00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:02.639
was shocked to discover that the group inside of the car,
157
00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:07.120
Arthur Pigeon and the rest, comprising a group of females,
158
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:11.679
looked terribly white, as if they'd seen a ghost, which
159
00:10:11.720 --> 00:10:16.600
indeed they then explained that they had park ghost holds
160
00:10:16.679 --> 00:10:20.279
up automobile party. Police are asked to run down spook
161
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:26.120
who terrorized motorists. Women shriek in fright, confident that spectral
162
00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:30.519
visitor tried to block their progress. Like the newspaper, the
163
00:10:30.600 --> 00:10:34.120
terrified group told the officer that they'd seen a thing
164
00:10:34.679 --> 00:10:38.240
in front of their car which was extending its arms
165
00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:41.840
as though to stop them, and it was clad in
166
00:10:41.879 --> 00:10:46.399
a luminous white robe. Mister Pigeon told the officer it
167
00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:50.320
was a tall, thin figure, barefoot and had long fair
168
00:10:50.360 --> 00:10:54.559
hair that seemed to shine. I did not notice the face,
169
00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:58.679
said mister Pigeon, I was too frightened. The officer listened
170
00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:02.360
to the account rather bemused, and suggested that the groups
171
00:11:02.440 --> 00:11:06.960
show him where this figure was At this suggestion. The
172
00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:10.960
females in the party shrieked and refused to budge. Only
173
00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:13.600
Arthur Pigeon was capable of walking with the police officer
174
00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:16.559
back to the spot where he claimed he'd seen the specter.
175
00:11:17.519 --> 00:11:19.720
It was no longer there. There was no sign of it.
176
00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:23.840
The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the police officer gave
177
00:11:23.879 --> 00:11:26.519
his report of the incident Captain Gleeson when he returned
178
00:11:26.519 --> 00:11:29.720
to the park station later that night. Captain Gleeson then
179
00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:33.440
gave orders that any ghost answering this description is to
180
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:38.679
be arrested on site. In eighteen thirty seven, in Victorian
181
00:11:38.840 --> 00:11:42.440
London and also spreading to other parts of the country,
182
00:11:42.879 --> 00:11:45.919
was a creature that was most known for his seemingly
183
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:49.960
supernatural ability to leap over high walls and make boundless,
184
00:11:50.159 --> 00:11:54.960
endless jumps off for the greatest distance, scaling walls effortlessly,
185
00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:59.720
impossibly and vanishing without ever being caught. The Mayor of
186
00:11:59.720 --> 00:12:02.919
London and Sir Cowan, at a private meeting, read a
187
00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:06.840
letter from a very concerned lady resident of London. She
188
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:09.159
told the Mayor that she had heard of a wager
189
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:13.679
being laid in which this trickster was frightening people She
190
00:12:13.720 --> 00:12:16.919
said that there was a wager between some high society
191
00:12:17.240 --> 00:12:20.600
lads who had come up with this creature in order
192
00:12:20.639 --> 00:12:24.480
to terrify the residence, but no man could have been
193
00:12:24.679 --> 00:12:29.120
doing the things that this specter was doing. At one
194
00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:33.000
residence in London, a servant came to answer a ring
195
00:12:33.039 --> 00:12:36.879
at the doorbell and found this dreadful figure standing on
196
00:12:36.919 --> 00:12:42.240
the doorstep. Consequently, the girl immediately swooned, and the letter
197
00:12:42.240 --> 00:12:45.960
writer says she had never recovered her senses after this.
198
00:12:46.919 --> 00:12:50.240
The creature was described as a leaping figure with eyes
199
00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:54.240
like red hot coals and glittering razor sharp hooks for hands.
200
00:12:55.159 --> 00:12:58.440
One young lady called Polyadams was a barmaid in a
201
00:12:58.440 --> 00:13:02.600
pub in central London. After her shift one night, she
202
00:13:02.679 --> 00:13:06.080
was walking home when she was brutally at act in
203
00:13:06.200 --> 00:13:10.600
Blackheath Park. Then, another lady, Mary Stevens, a servant who
204
00:13:10.600 --> 00:13:13.279
worked at a wealthy home in London, was confronted by
205
00:13:13.320 --> 00:13:16.879
the same creature on Barnes' Common. She also said that
206
00:13:16.919 --> 00:13:19.799
after her attacker had finished with her, he bounded away
207
00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:23.840
with seemingly impossible jumps. The third victim was Jane Orsop,
208
00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:27.039
when she too went to answer her front door bell
209
00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:29.639
as she opened the door. Suddenly in the dark, this
210
00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:33.279
hideous monster was standing on the doorstep, shrouded in a long,
211
00:13:33.399 --> 00:13:38.039
dark cloak and stood half in the shadows. Glowing red
212
00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:41.279
eyes bore into hers as the figure lunged at her
213
00:13:41.720 --> 00:13:45.320
and she screamed. Her scream alerted her sister and father
214
00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:48.679
in the house, who came running from different rooms. By
215
00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:52.799
this point, the hideous figure with horns and claws, ripped
216
00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:56.799
at her neck and dress as she screamed in terror. She,
217
00:13:57.039 --> 00:14:00.320
her sister, and her father all confirmed that the greatest, scilly,
218
00:14:00.360 --> 00:14:04.080
deformed monster then fled into the night, leaping over roofs.
219
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:07.360
His hands were icy cold, she said, but his eyes
220
00:14:07.399 --> 00:14:10.600
were at balls of fire. His face was hideous. He
221
00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:15.120
vomited flames. When the police came and saw the damage
222
00:14:15.159 --> 00:14:17.759
to her face, they offered a reward to capture this
223
00:14:17.879 --> 00:14:22.240
unstoppable assailant, and groups of vigilantes soon began roaming the
224
00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:26.159
parks and London streets in search of the offender. The
225
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.919
Duke of Wellington and his aristocratic friends formed their own posse,
226
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:33.559
searching on horseback for the fiend and chasing possible suspects.
227
00:14:34.279 --> 00:14:37.080
Yet these suspects all turned out to be mere mortals
228
00:14:37.480 --> 00:14:42.480
and wholly innocent. Indeed, the monster was never apprehended. As
229
00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:45.840
the weeks and months passed, attacks began to be reported
230
00:14:45.919 --> 00:14:49.600
on a weekly basis. Yet now the violent assaults had
231
00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:52.799
spread across the country. In southern England, they began to
232
00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:55.879
suffer a space of nighttime attacks. The attack I left
233
00:14:55.879 --> 00:14:59.399
tracks in the snow across fields and over rooftops, whiched
234
00:14:59.399 --> 00:15:02.440
that no mortal man could have traveled successfully without loss
235
00:15:02.440 --> 00:15:05.360
of life. People began to call the tracks he left
236
00:15:05.399 --> 00:15:09.120
behind the footprints of the devil. Things became so serious
237
00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.679
and the army were called in. Yet he managed to
238
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:15.679
outsmart the army too. He taunted them by appearing suddenly
239
00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:18.919
in their foxholes where they didn't to sneak up on him.
240
00:15:19.200 --> 00:15:22.320
After appearing without warning beside them in the foxhole, he
241
00:15:22.360 --> 00:15:25.080
would just vanish again, fleeing in the blink of an
242
00:15:25.080 --> 00:15:28.480
eye into the distance, too fast for any soldier to catch.
243
00:15:29.440 --> 00:15:32.200
Any shots fired at him were useless. He was too
244
00:15:32.279 --> 00:15:35.759
fast to be hit Before he fled, though he would
245
00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:38.320
slap one of the soldiers swiftly across the face with
246
00:15:38.360 --> 00:15:41.000
a hand that was as cold as ice. An order
247
00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:43.919
shot barracks an hour from London, one of the largest
248
00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:47.559
army bases in the country a century received several ice
249
00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.840
cord slaps to the face. On night duty, soldiers shot
250
00:15:50.840 --> 00:15:55.240
at the fleeting figure, but had no effect. Attacks continued unabated.
251
00:15:55.840 --> 00:15:58.799
Another report came from from the County New Hamptonshire, which
252
00:15:58.919 --> 00:16:01.679
described the attack as the very image of the greel
253
00:16:01.759 --> 00:16:06.399
himself with horns and eyes of flame. Meanwhile, in London,
254
00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:09.600
ladies still found themselves confronted by the cloaked with its
255
00:16:09.679 --> 00:16:15.159
razor sharp hooks for hands, until gradually reports grew less
256
00:16:15.159 --> 00:16:19.799
and less. Perhaps the monster relocated or did he multiply.
257
00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:24.120
In eighteen seventy seven, four decades after his first appearance,
258
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:29.039
Police Illustrates magazine reported on a strange incident again at
259
00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:32.440
Ordershot Barracks, calling the story the ghosts of Order Shot.
260
00:16:32.759 --> 00:16:35.879
It writes, for some time past, the sentries on two
261
00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.480
outlying posts have been frightened to death by the appearance
262
00:16:39.559 --> 00:16:43.840
at night of two spectral figures. The figures, glowing with
263
00:16:43.960 --> 00:16:47.720
phosphorus and otherwise alarming, are in the habit of suddenly
264
00:16:47.799 --> 00:16:52.519
manifesting themselves, making tremendous springs of ten or twelve steps
265
00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:56.720
at a time. Upsetting the wretched sentries before he's even
266
00:16:56.720 --> 00:16:59.919
been able to collect himself sufficiently to oppose earthly off
267
00:17:00.320 --> 00:17:04.720
to the ghostly visitations, the latter doing no bodily injury,
268
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:08.359
contenting themselves with upsetting the poor man, after which they
269
00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:12.079
mysteriously disappear. So great has been the panic that it
270
00:17:12.079 --> 00:17:18.759
has been found necessary to post double centuries. In Buenos Aires, Argentina,
271
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:22.039
there's a building called the Tower of the Ghosts, and
272
00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:25.640
it's named as such after the curious and disturbing tale
273
00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:28.160
of the death of a beautiful artist there at the
274
00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:33.279
hand vengeful gnomes. The Ghost Tower is the top section
275
00:17:33.480 --> 00:17:37.799
of a stunning Catalan modernist building located on the cross
276
00:17:37.839 --> 00:17:42.759
section of Wensor'slow Villa Fane in Benito Perez Galdos and
277
00:17:43.000 --> 00:17:46.680
al Morante Brown in the La Bocca neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
278
00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:52.599
Was built by Maria Luisa vent Arnauld, a wealthy ranch owner. However,
279
00:17:52.880 --> 00:17:56.559
this wealthy aunt oonah stayed for just one year and
280
00:17:56.799 --> 00:18:02.039
left the majestic property mysteriously in and without any explanation.
281
00:18:02.799 --> 00:18:06.440
The building was then converted into individual rental apartments, and
282
00:18:06.599 --> 00:18:09.880
among the new tenants was a very beautiful woman called Clementina.
283
00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:12.799
She was a quiet woman who kept herself to herself
284
00:18:12.839 --> 00:18:16.160
and worked away in her apartment as an artist. Her
285
00:18:16.240 --> 00:18:19.599
apartment was situated up in the Attelia Tower. She was
286
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:22.640
spent all day in the tower painting. She only left
287
00:18:22.680 --> 00:18:25.079
the apartment to attend the Faculty of Arts, where she
288
00:18:25.160 --> 00:18:28.640
was studying painting. Her artwork was getting noticed, and one
289
00:18:28.759 --> 00:18:32.799
day a journalist visited her to interview her. The journalist, Elena,
290
00:18:33.079 --> 00:18:35.960
spent time talking to her and looking at her paintings
291
00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:39.720
and taking photos of them. Then Eleanor left satisfied she
292
00:18:39.759 --> 00:18:42.319
had captured the artist and her work really well, and
293
00:18:42.400 --> 00:18:46.400
feeling really excited to write up her article. But after
294
00:18:46.720 --> 00:18:50.200
she had the photographs developed and she sat looking at them,
295
00:18:50.599 --> 00:18:54.000
she was stunned to see something completely inexplicable in one
296
00:18:54.039 --> 00:18:57.559
of the photos. It appeared that in this particular photograph
297
00:18:57.640 --> 00:19:02.960
of one of Clementina's paintings, small mysterious beings who were
298
00:19:02.960 --> 00:19:06.720
definitely not in the painting. When she'd taken the photographs,
299
00:19:07.359 --> 00:19:09.359
she thought her eyes had to be deceiving her, and
300
00:19:09.440 --> 00:19:11.799
yet she could not deny that they really did appear
301
00:19:11.839 --> 00:19:15.240
to be three very strange little creatures in the photo.
302
00:19:16.200 --> 00:19:20.799
They looked like goblins or gnomes. Elena was so intrigued that,
303
00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:23.720
without wasting any time, she went back to Clementina's house
304
00:19:23.759 --> 00:19:27.240
to show a what she found in the painting. Clementina
305
00:19:27.319 --> 00:19:29.680
was surprised to see her again, but she was even
306
00:19:29.720 --> 00:19:32.759
more surprised when she saw the three creatures too, but
307
00:19:32.920 --> 00:19:36.359
she immediately refused to talk to the journalist about it.
308
00:19:36.640 --> 00:19:39.400
In fact, she appeared very disturbed, and she invited the
309
00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:43.319
journalists to leave her house immediately. As she showed Eleanor out,
310
00:19:43.599 --> 00:19:46.079
she said very quietly to her, did not have to
311
00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:50.359
see them. Elenor left very confused by the artist's behavior
312
00:19:50.440 --> 00:19:54.680
and still disturbed by the strange creatures. In the days
313
00:19:54.680 --> 00:19:57.079
and nights that followed, several of the neighbors at the
314
00:19:57.119 --> 00:20:01.359
tower thought they could hear screams coming from the direction
315
00:20:01.480 --> 00:20:04.640
of her Itelia apartment, but they brushed to offer her
316
00:20:04.640 --> 00:20:08.680
imagination or maybe it was a television. Then one night,
317
00:20:08.759 --> 00:20:11.559
the normally quiet and calm building was awoken to the
318
00:20:11.559 --> 00:20:14.720
sound of blood curdling screams. They were coming from the
319
00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:19.359
Itelia Tower, where Clementina lived. When the residents rushed up
320
00:20:19.400 --> 00:20:23.359
to investigate, they found her apartment empty, but outside on
321
00:20:23.440 --> 00:20:27.920
the sidewalk. Her body lay bloodied and dead. It appeared
322
00:20:27.960 --> 00:20:31.319
that Clementina had committed suicide, throwing herself out of the
323
00:20:31.359 --> 00:20:36.119
tower to certain death. She must have died instantly well.
324
00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:39.240
Her tragic death was written about in the city newspapers,
325
00:20:39.279 --> 00:20:42.200
and the journalist Eleanor, who had interviewed her just a
326
00:20:42.200 --> 00:20:44.839
few days before, was so shocked when she read it.
327
00:20:45.640 --> 00:20:49.400
Clementina had given no indication of being depressed about anything
328
00:20:49.559 --> 00:20:51.559
that could have caused her to throw herself to her
329
00:20:51.640 --> 00:20:54.759
death from the tower. In fact, her close circle of
330
00:20:54.799 --> 00:20:58.119
friends would later say that she'd confided in them about
331
00:20:58.160 --> 00:21:00.720
how excited she was. The painting she was soon to
332
00:21:00.720 --> 00:21:03.680
finish was her best work. She said. It had taken
333
00:21:03.720 --> 00:21:05.759
her years to paint, but she knew this was a
334
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:08.519
turning point in her career. This would be her most
335
00:21:08.519 --> 00:21:11.720
famous painting when she finished it. Of course, as for
336
00:21:11.759 --> 00:21:14.279
the journalist Elena, she could not forget the strange attitude
337
00:21:14.279 --> 00:21:16.880
of the artist. When she'd returned to show her the
338
00:21:16.960 --> 00:21:20.720
photograph with the creatures in it, Clementina had refused to
339
00:21:20.759 --> 00:21:24.519
talk about it. Elenor was unable to stop thinking about
340
00:21:24.519 --> 00:21:27.400
this and the subsequent tragedy, so she went to the
341
00:21:27.440 --> 00:21:30.759
apartments to interview some of the people there and asking
342
00:21:30.920 --> 00:21:35.119
Clementina's neighbors about Clementina and whether they'd ever seen anything
343
00:21:35.119 --> 00:21:37.960
that could explain what had happened that night. But all
344
00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:40.839
she came away with was the discovery that the wealthy
345
00:21:40.839 --> 00:21:43.480
former owner of the building had left in what seemed
346
00:21:43.519 --> 00:21:45.559
to have been a great hurry, and had given her
347
00:21:45.599 --> 00:21:49.559
explanation for abandoning the beautiful and expensive building that she
348
00:21:49.680 --> 00:21:53.119
had built. So Eleanor became determined to visit the former
349
00:21:53.160 --> 00:21:56.839
owner and try and find out more. Eventually, she located
350
00:21:57.039 --> 00:22:00.160
Maria Luisa Albert Arnaud, and she went to see her her.
351
00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:03.880
Maria invited her in warmly and began to talk to
352
00:22:03.920 --> 00:22:07.119
her and in a herd the most fantastic and mysterious
353
00:22:07.160 --> 00:22:11.480
account imaginable. Miss Arnold began by asking the journalist if
354
00:22:11.519 --> 00:22:15.759
she believed in goblins, to which Eleanor replied no. Then
355
00:22:15.799 --> 00:22:19.799
missus Arnold began to narrate an ancient legend of Catalonia,
356
00:22:19.960 --> 00:22:23.119
which says that in the forests of the Pyrenees lived
357
00:22:23.119 --> 00:22:27.440
the follets or little goblins that always sleep in the mushrooms.
358
00:22:28.279 --> 00:22:31.759
Missus Arnold said that while living there, in her home
359
00:22:32.200 --> 00:22:36.160
in the towers with the Nomes, that they collaborated with
360
00:22:36.240 --> 00:22:39.599
her servants and were helpful every day, but that one
361
00:22:39.720 --> 00:22:42.680
day one of the nomes tried to make a pass
362
00:22:42.839 --> 00:22:46.359
at her maid, and one of the male servants, standing
363
00:22:46.400 --> 00:22:49.039
close beside the maid, took hold of the gnome and
364
00:22:49.200 --> 00:22:52.079
threw it against the wall to remove it from the
365
00:22:52.119 --> 00:22:56.359
maid's company. Understandably, the gnome was infuriated, and from that
366
00:22:56.480 --> 00:23:00.160
day forth all hell broke loose in the household. The
367
00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:04.279
Gnomes were now at war with Missus Arnold. Furniture would
368
00:23:04.279 --> 00:23:06.839
be heard across rooms, and legs of chairs were severed.
369
00:23:07.359 --> 00:23:12.039
Knives flew wildly through the air, embedding wherever they landed,
370
00:23:12.559 --> 00:23:15.960
and of course, seriously jeopardizing the lives of the servants
371
00:23:15.960 --> 00:23:19.599
and the mistress. Missus Arnold. She confided in the journalist
372
00:23:19.720 --> 00:23:22.839
that she and her servants had felt they had no
373
00:23:22.960 --> 00:23:26.240
choice but to leave her dream towers because they would
374
00:23:26.319 --> 00:23:31.480
end up dead at the hands of these small, malevolent creatures. However,
375
00:23:31.519 --> 00:23:33.480
that was all she would say. She refused to go
376
00:23:33.519 --> 00:23:36.759
into any more details, but she looked terrified when she
377
00:23:36.920 --> 00:23:39.680
talked about it. She made the journalists swear that she
378
00:23:39.680 --> 00:23:41.519
would not read the word of her tale for fear
379
00:23:41.559 --> 00:23:43.799
that she would be forced into a lunatic sylum and
380
00:23:43.880 --> 00:23:48.039
her assets would be seized. The beautiful artist to Clementina,
381
00:23:48.440 --> 00:23:53.920
for some reason, appears to have somehow upset the Gnomes.
382
00:23:55.640 --> 00:24:00.440
English aristocrat Lord Thomas Lyttleton was well known on the
383
00:24:00.440 --> 00:24:04.400
London social circuit in the seventeen seventies for his wild,
384
00:24:04.640 --> 00:24:09.000
debauched ways. Indeed, he was more commonly referred to as
385
00:24:09.039 --> 00:24:12.839
the wicked Lord Lyttleton. He'd been educated at the elite
386
00:24:12.920 --> 00:24:18.000
private boarding school called Eton, and then on to Oxford University.
387
00:24:18.839 --> 00:24:22.319
He was known as a clever, talented and very charming man,
388
00:24:22.480 --> 00:24:26.720
but also a notorious and scandalous rake who lived life
389
00:24:26.759 --> 00:24:31.400
to its fullest, excelling in extravagance. He also had a
390
00:24:31.400 --> 00:24:35.599
passion for settling things by jules. He was elected as
391
00:24:35.599 --> 00:24:39.279
an MP and sat in Parliament until he was unseated
392
00:24:39.440 --> 00:24:42.519
on the charge of bribery, but then after his father died,
393
00:24:42.759 --> 00:24:46.319
he became entitled to sit in Parliament once again, this
394
00:24:46.480 --> 00:24:50.400
time taking his hereditary seat in the House of Lords.
395
00:24:51.119 --> 00:24:53.880
Lord Lyttleton was the life and soul of any social
396
00:24:53.920 --> 00:24:57.759
gathering and famed for his entertaining character as well as
397
00:24:57.799 --> 00:25:01.359
this often scandalous one, so he was frequently talked about.
398
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:05.240
In seventeen seventy two, he married at Fea Peach, the
399
00:25:05.279 --> 00:25:08.599
wealthy widow of the Governor of Calcutta, who had a
400
00:25:08.640 --> 00:25:12.279
fortune of over twenty thousand, which in this stay's terms
401
00:25:12.279 --> 00:25:16.400
would be approximately one point two million pounds. However, he
402
00:25:16.519 --> 00:25:19.119
soon lost interest in his new wife, and many believed
403
00:25:19.119 --> 00:25:21.480
it only married her for her money, and after three
404
00:25:21.480 --> 00:25:24.240
months he returned to the social circuit of London for
405
00:25:24.319 --> 00:25:27.839
the gambling and the women. By early the following year
406
00:25:27.920 --> 00:25:30.640
he deloped to Paris on a wager of one hundred
407
00:25:30.680 --> 00:25:34.599
guineas with the barmaid of Bolton's Inn at Hockerell. This
408
00:25:34.759 --> 00:25:37.920
was then followed swiftly by newspaper reports of another escapade
409
00:25:37.960 --> 00:25:39.880
when he got into a brawl over an actress in
410
00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:44.160
Vauxhall pleasure Gardens. He was a Georgian hell raiser who
411
00:25:44.279 --> 00:25:48.079
excelled at gambling, fornication and drinking, and he declared of himself,
412
00:25:48.240 --> 00:25:51.680
my character is divided between an ardent desire of applause
413
00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:54.400
and a more than equal love of pleasure. I will
414
00:25:54.400 --> 00:25:56.279
freely own that my life has been marked with an
415
00:25:56.319 --> 00:26:00.680
extravagance of dissipation. One of his friends even him, I
416
00:26:00.720 --> 00:26:03.359
think there is a mixture of insanity about him that
417
00:26:03.559 --> 00:26:07.519
drives him to petition. But it wasn't this exuberant and
418
00:26:07.559 --> 00:26:11.359
debauched behavior that garnered most attention during the last week
419
00:26:11.400 --> 00:26:14.559
of his life. Indeed, it was a very strange tale
420
00:26:14.599 --> 00:26:19.480
that he himself told others. Lord Lyttleton told several people
421
00:26:19.480 --> 00:26:23.200
in his close circle of friends that's something very unnerving
422
00:26:23.480 --> 00:26:27.200
but occurred on the night of November twenty fourth, seventeen
423
00:26:27.279 --> 00:26:30.599
seventy nine. Although at the time he did shrug the
424
00:26:30.599 --> 00:26:33.920
incident off. He was thirty three years of age, and
425
00:26:34.039 --> 00:26:36.799
it happened, he said, when he was in his London
426
00:26:36.880 --> 00:26:41.119
home in Hill Street, Berkeley Square. He said he was
427
00:26:41.200 --> 00:26:43.079
woken in the dead of night by what sounded like
428
00:26:43.119 --> 00:26:45.759
a bird flapping its wings on the curtains that enclosed
429
00:26:45.799 --> 00:26:49.200
his large four poster bed. He opened his eyes and
430
00:26:49.240 --> 00:26:52.680
saw the shape of a bird, which then transformed into
431
00:26:52.720 --> 00:26:56.000
a gaunt old lady, dressed head to toe in white
432
00:26:56.400 --> 00:26:59.759
and standing very close to his bed. She was withered,
433
00:26:59.799 --> 00:27:04.160
a haggard and looked very ancient. She glared at him
434
00:27:04.160 --> 00:27:08.440
and pointed a finger at him. Accusingly before saying hear me, now,
435
00:27:08.559 --> 00:27:11.440
Lord Littleton, for I have come to tell you that
436
00:27:11.519 --> 00:27:15.400
you will be dead within three days. Prepare to die.
437
00:27:15.799 --> 00:27:19.839
Then she vanished. Littleton was shaken to the core and
438
00:27:19.960 --> 00:27:23.400
quickly called for his manservant to come. The apparition had
439
00:27:23.440 --> 00:27:27.359
been so real that he knew this was not a dream.
440
00:27:27.519 --> 00:27:30.319
But the man servant the next morning couldn't help but
441
00:27:30.559 --> 00:27:33.960
tell friends of his of the strange incident in the night,
442
00:27:34.359 --> 00:27:36.480
and they told others, and soon the talk of the
443
00:27:36.519 --> 00:27:39.880
town was about the apparition and her deathly warning. Then
444
00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:43.440
Littleton himself went to his uncle, Lord Wetcoat, to tell
445
00:27:43.480 --> 00:27:46.559
him what had happened. However, not one to let anything
446
00:27:46.599 --> 00:27:49.319
stop him from enjoying his wild ways, he managed to
447
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:51.599
shake it from his mind, and although he shared his
448
00:27:51.680 --> 00:27:55.279
experience with many of his close circle, he continued in
449
00:27:55.359 --> 00:27:59.119
his exuberant lifestyle. On the third day, the day of
450
00:27:59.160 --> 00:28:01.759
his predicted death, he was taking a group to a
451
00:28:01.799 --> 00:28:05.279
house he owned in Epsom, just outside of London. With him.
452
00:28:05.279 --> 00:28:07.839
In the group were three sisters and several other friends.
453
00:28:08.359 --> 00:28:11.200
He joked with them that he was feeling very positive
454
00:28:11.279 --> 00:28:14.440
he would have builk the ghost he believed he would
455
00:28:14.440 --> 00:28:19.480
evaded and remain victoriously alive. That day, he and his
456
00:28:19.519 --> 00:28:23.319
cousin passed a graveyard, at which he remarked to his cousin,
457
00:28:23.559 --> 00:28:26.640
you and I, who are gentlemen, so live to a
458
00:28:26.680 --> 00:28:31.119
good old age. As the evening came, he was holding
459
00:28:31.160 --> 00:28:34.440
a dinner party, where he appeared very cheerful and in
460
00:28:34.519 --> 00:28:38.359
apparent great health. At a quarter past eleven that night,
461
00:28:38.640 --> 00:28:42.160
he climbed into bed after requesting that his manservant bring
462
00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:44.559
him a teaspoon so that he could eat some rhubarb.
463
00:28:45.319 --> 00:28:48.599
When his manservant returned, Lord Lyttleton was lying on the
464
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:52.839
floor writhing in distress as though having a fit, and
465
00:28:52.880 --> 00:28:57.920
before the clock struck midnight he was dead well. Strangely,
466
00:28:58.119 --> 00:29:02.559
a descendant of Lord A George Littleton, also had a
467
00:29:02.640 --> 00:29:06.359
terrifying encounter in the very same square, Berkeley Square in
468
00:29:06.400 --> 00:29:11.480
London a century later, in eighteen seventy two. This time
469
00:29:11.640 --> 00:29:15.000
the address where it happened was fifty Berkeley Square. Lord
470
00:29:15.240 --> 00:29:19.559
George Lyttleton stayed the night in the house as a wager.
471
00:29:20.519 --> 00:29:22.359
He set up a bell in the attic where he
472
00:29:22.480 --> 00:29:25.119
was to spend the night to prove to others that
473
00:29:25.200 --> 00:29:29.920
he could withstand any supernatural onslaught from whatever it was
474
00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:34.400
that lived there. The house had a terrible reputation of
475
00:29:34.519 --> 00:29:37.920
people being found dead there at the hands, it was
476
00:29:38.039 --> 00:29:42.000
said of the demon of Berkeley Square. He didn't believe
477
00:29:42.039 --> 00:29:45.079
the rumors or the talk of the dead bodies, but
478
00:29:45.160 --> 00:29:47.759
he did take a shotgun with him just for good measure.
479
00:29:48.599 --> 00:29:51.720
He later reported that during the night an apparition appeared
480
00:29:51.720 --> 00:29:54.519
in the form of a swirling mass of mist, and
481
00:29:54.599 --> 00:29:57.680
he did indeed shoot it. In the daylight or the
482
00:29:57.720 --> 00:30:01.240
next morning, he found the attic to be completely He
483
00:30:01.319 --> 00:30:03.599
did report that, in his opinion, the upper floor of
484
00:30:03.599 --> 00:30:07.480
the house was supernaturally fatal to body and mind, but
485
00:30:07.519 --> 00:30:11.799
he didn't explain any more than that. Well. Eight years later,
486
00:30:12.160 --> 00:30:17.079
in eighteen forty, another aristocrat, Sir Robert Warboys, was drinking
487
00:30:17.119 --> 00:30:19.400
in a tavern with a group of friends when he
488
00:30:19.480 --> 00:30:22.720
was told of the reputation of the house. He dismissed
489
00:30:22.720 --> 00:30:26.480
the stories as ludicrous, and his friends in turn challenged
490
00:30:26.559 --> 00:30:30.200
him to stay the night there. Warboys eagerly took them
491
00:30:30.319 --> 00:30:33.319
up on their bet, thinking it would be great fun
492
00:30:33.400 --> 00:30:35.720
and he would be proved right and win the bet.
493
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:40.200
His friends insisted on some conditions that he must take
494
00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:42.720
his gun to the house with him and keep it
495
00:30:42.839 --> 00:30:45.640
in the bedroom where he was to stay alone, and
496
00:30:45.680 --> 00:30:48.319
the caretaker of the property advised him that he must
497
00:30:48.440 --> 00:30:51.160
ring the bell in the bedroom no matter how late
498
00:30:51.200 --> 00:30:56.240
it was, should you require any assistance during the night. Well,
499
00:30:56.279 --> 00:30:59.200
he settled into his room, and his friends remained in
500
00:30:59.200 --> 00:31:02.400
the drawing room room on the ground floor with the caretaker,
501
00:31:02.599 --> 00:31:05.599
all sitting together in a group for protection, and Sir
502
00:31:05.680 --> 00:31:09.839
Robert left alone up in the bedroom. All was quiet
503
00:31:10.000 --> 00:31:12.359
until at about a quarter to one in the morning,
504
00:31:12.799 --> 00:31:16.079
when the bell from his bedroom suddenly sounded and the
505
00:31:16.160 --> 00:31:19.440
men all ran quickly up to the bedroom, hearing a
506
00:31:19.480 --> 00:31:23.240
gunshot as they ran up the stairs. Quickly pushing open
507
00:31:23.240 --> 00:31:26.119
the bedroom door, they found Sir Robert on the floor,
508
00:31:26.440 --> 00:31:29.839
his pistol still smoking in his hand, the room empty.
509
00:31:30.599 --> 00:31:34.359
Sir Robert, however, was dead. His face was contorted in
510
00:31:34.440 --> 00:31:38.359
a death mask grimace of terror. He had, they declared,
511
00:31:38.599 --> 00:31:43.599
died from fright. A few years after this, two sailors
512
00:31:43.599 --> 00:31:46.200
from the naval base of Portsmouth were in town on
513
00:31:46.400 --> 00:31:49.839
leave and happened to walk by the house and noticed
514
00:31:49.839 --> 00:31:54.680
a toilette sign hanging outside. Or They decided to save
515
00:31:54.759 --> 00:31:57.799
on paying for a hotel, they'd break in and they'd
516
00:31:57.799 --> 00:32:00.599
have three digs for the night. When they got inside,
517
00:32:00.799 --> 00:32:03.640
they found all the rooms empty save for just one
518
00:32:03.680 --> 00:32:05.720
bedroom on the top floor that had a bed in it,
519
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:08.880
and well, they had a night of drinking, so they
520
00:32:08.880 --> 00:32:11.000
were quick to get into the bed and try to
521
00:32:11.000 --> 00:32:15.359
get some sleep. One of the sailors, however, Edward Blundon,
522
00:32:15.839 --> 00:32:20.279
felt oddly nervous and too unsettled to go to sleep
523
00:32:20.559 --> 00:32:23.680
for some reason. He found himself laying restless and awake
524
00:32:23.720 --> 00:32:28.359
on the bed as his companion, Robert Martin, snored soundly.
525
00:32:29.559 --> 00:32:34.000
Then suddenly Edward heard the sound of footsteps coming toward
526
00:32:34.079 --> 00:32:37.640
the closed bedroom door, and very nervous, he quickly woke
527
00:32:37.680 --> 00:32:42.079
his friend up. Something large, dark and shapeless was entering
528
00:32:42.119 --> 00:32:46.640
the room. Then it flew at Edward, attacking him, while
529
00:32:46.720 --> 00:32:50.559
Robert managed to flee in terror from the room. He
530
00:32:50.640 --> 00:32:53.000
ran down the flights of stairs and out into the street,
531
00:32:53.079 --> 00:32:56.079
where luckily for him, he spotted a policeman on patrol,
532
00:32:56.240 --> 00:32:58.960
and he ran to him and told him his friend
533
00:32:59.079 --> 00:33:02.799
needed help urgently, that she was being attacked. So the
534
00:33:02.799 --> 00:33:04.960
policeman ran back into the house with him, and they
535
00:33:05.000 --> 00:33:06.920
climbed the stairs as fast as they could, but they
536
00:33:06.960 --> 00:33:12.319
were too late. Edward was gone from the bedroom, and
537
00:33:12.440 --> 00:33:14.519
after a search of the house, they found his body
538
00:33:14.799 --> 00:33:19.640
on the stairs of the basement, his neck broken and
539
00:33:19.720 --> 00:33:22.559
his dead face fixed in an expression of horror.
