David Pierini is a writer and photographer living in Minneapolis, MN. Currently, works for a non-profit hyperlocal newspaper. He has co-authored two books, “Bloodroot,” with Indiana poet Norb Krapf and “The Cult of Mac 2E,” a book celebrating the cultural impact of tech giant Apple.
Graduated from Michigan State University in 1991 with a degree in Journalism. Covered courts and county government as a reporter for five years in Kalamazoo, Mich. before deciding to return to school for photography. Graduated with a degree in photojournalism from Western Kentucky University in 1998.
Worked at The Herald in Jasper, Ind., for 10 years, most of that time as chief photographer. Won several state and national awards, including iPOY, Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar and was twice Indiana Photographer of the Year.
Moved to Chicago in 2008. Soon after was hired by the Chicago Tribune, first as a picture editor in the newspaper’s archive and then as a bureau photo chief. Laid off in 2011, but quickly went to work as a digital producer for the ABC affiliate in Chicago.
Spent a year at ABC 7, then returned to photography for a chain of weeklies based in Oak Park, IL.
In 2014, left the newspaper business to write about tech culture for the website Cult of Mac. Moved to Minneapolis in 2015 and began volunteering for Pillsbury United Communities, a non-profit group that purchased a newspaper as part of its narrative justice program.
Laid off from Cult of Mac as COVID-19 shut everything down but joined North News as a full-time reporter and photographer.
