🎧 Celebrating Diver Down – Van Halen’s Classic Album (Released April 14, 1982)
Van Halen’s fifth studio album, Diver Down, was released on April 14, 1982, and remains one of the band’s most recognizable and commercially successful records. The album spent an impressive 65 weeks on the U.S. Billboard charts and had sold over 4 million copies in the United States by 1998, solidifying its place in rock history.
🚩 Iconic Album Artwork
The instantly recognizable red-and-white “diver down” flag symbolizes something hidden beneath the surface—perfectly reflecting the band’s layered sound and explosive energy. David Lee Roth explained that it represented “something going on that’s not apparent to your eyes.” Van Halen’s manager Noel Monk later revealed a playful double meaning—“dive her down”—in his memoir Running with the Devil.
📸 Back Cover Photo
The album’s back cover features a dynamic live photo of the band taken by Richard Aaron at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on October 24, 1981, during a performance opening for The Rolling Stones.
🎵 Notable Tracks and Covers
Of the album’s 12 tracks, five are cover songs, showcasing the band’s ability to reinterpret classics with their signature style. The standout hit is their high-energy version of “(Oh) Pretty Woman,” originally recorded by Roy Orbison, which became one of the album’s biggest successes.
🎙 Eddie Van Halen on the Making of Diver Down
“After the Fair Warning tour, we planned to take a break. Dave wanted to release a single—originally Dancing in the Streets. But I couldn’t vibe with it. Instead, I suggested Pretty Woman. We recorded it in a day at Sunset Sound, and it took off. Warner Bros. said, ‘You’ve got a hit—time to make an album!’ We jumped in with no rest and made Diver Down in just 12 days. It was a lot of fun.”
