Last time we spoke about the continuation of the Rzhev meatgrinder. In early August 1942, the Eastern Front boiled at once on three axes. At Stalingrad, Hoth's panzers raced north from Kotelnikovo, mauling Chuikov's scratch force and forcing a chaotic Soviet command reshuffle—Yeremenko taking a new Southeastern Front—while Paulus, defying his own timetable at Hitler's insistence, encircled the 62nd Army near Kalach. In the Caucasus, Kleist's tanks stormed toward Armavir, Stavropol, and the Kuban, seizing fuel dumps that kept the drive alive, even as SS Einsatzgruppe D began mass murdering Jews at Stavropol. Meanwhile, near Rzhev, Zhukov's offensive genuinely endangered the German 9th Army, though Soviet coordination failures kept it from becoming decisive. Behind the dramatic German gains lurked strain: stretched supply lines, stiffening resistance, and a Wehrmacht increasingly gambling tactical brilliance against the arithmetic of distance and exhaustion.

By the 10th, the four German KM-boats that had been plagued by persistent engine trouble finally limped back into harbour at Lahdenpohja, their repairs complete. With maintenance work finished and crews freshly trained, Axis combat operations on Lake Ladoga at last got underway on the 14th. The following night, on August 15th, three Italian MAS boats ran into three Soviet gunboats in a brief, confused night engagement. The Italians came away convinced they had sunk one of their opponents, but in truth their torpedo had gone wide, striking a nearby shoal and detonating harmlessly rather than finding its intended target. It was an inauspicious start for what Axis planners had hoped would be a serious challenge to Soviet control of the lake.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the water, Soviet engineers unveiled a new type of vessel: a train-ferry barge capable of hauling either three steam locomotives complete with their tenders, or ten two-axle railway wagons across the lake in a single crossing. It was an impressive piece of improvised engineering, but a deeply fragile one. With almost no freeboard to speak of, the barges could only be risked in calm conditions, and a sudden squall on Ladoga's notoriously unpredictable waters could easily have proven catastrophic. Because their construction demanded scarce skilled labour and equally scarce materials, the Soviets treated each completed barge as a near-irreplaceable asset, shepherding them only within heavily protected convoys. Unsurprisingly, given these constraints, only three were completed over the course of the summer of 1942.
By contrast, the Soviets found far greater success mass-producing a much humbler vessel: small, simplified self-propelled tenders powered by repurposed ZIS-5 truck engines. Each could carry between 15 and 25 tons of cargo, a modest figure compared to the ambitious train-ferries, but their compact size gave them a crucial advantage — they could be run straight onto a beach and refloated with relative ease, allowing cargo to be transferred even in places lacking any real port infrastructure. This flexibility made them invaluable for sustaining the flow of supplies into besieged Leningrad. By the time Lake Ladoga froze over again that winter, engineers and workers had turned out no fewer than 112 of these humble but essential craft.
On the German side, preparations for the coming assault on Leningrad were proceeding, but not without friction. After his briefing with Hitler, Field Marshal Küchler set about searching for ways to free up additional manpower for the offensive. One option under consideration was pulling two divisions out of the 18th Army, but doing so would require abandoning the towns of Kirishi and Gruzino — a trade-off Küchler was reluctant to accept without careful thought. Adding to his troubles, he then learned from Lindemann that the artillery support promised for the operation had fallen dramatically short: instead of the 1,000 guns he had been assured, only 598 were actually available. Faced with this shortfall in both men and firepower, Küchler petitioned Hitler to let him retain the 5th Mountain Division rather than releasing it elsewhere. Hitler granted the request on the 15th, redirecting the 3rd Mountain Division to Finland instead, where it was earmarked for Operation Lachsfang.
On the 14th, Küchler paid a personal visit to Leningrad — apparently his first close inspection of the city. Confronted with the sheer mass of stone and concrete construction that made up the city's fabric, he found himself doubting Hitler's confident assurance that the Luftwaffe could simply burn Leningrad to the ground. In his own assessment, the city's buildings would prove only "in small measure vulnerable to fire," a judgment that quietly undercut one of the more fanciful premises behind the planned assault.
On the Soviet side of the lines, General Govorov was finalising his own offensive plans. The Neva Operation Group together with the 55th Army would serve as his main striking forces, tasked with seizing Tosno and Siniavino. The Baltic Fleet and its naval infantry were expected to lend crucial support during the difficult river crossings of the Neva. Meanwhile, the 42nd Army, along with whatever forces from the 55th Army were not committed to the main effort, would launch diversionary attacks toward Uritsk and Staro-Panovo, intended to pin down German reserves and prevent them from reinforcing the main sectors under threat.
To the east, the 8th Army under Meretskov formed the core of a parallel Soviet effort. The 6th Guards Rifle Corps and the 265th Rifle Division were assigned the task of capturing Siniavino before pushing on to exploit any success by taking Mga and eventually linking up with the 55th Army's advance. The 4th Guards Rifle Corps was held in reserve as the army's second echelon, while the still-reforming 2nd Shock Army — a formation with a grim history following its earlier destruction — was designated as the third echelon. A substantial reserve of five rifle divisions and an additional rifle brigade was positioned around Volkhov, ready to be committed as the situation demanded. The 8th Army was also generously supplied with tanks, artillery, mortars, and Katyusha rocket batteries in support of the planned offensive. Three further rifle divisions were tasked with guarding the flanks of the assault, while the remaining armies of the Volkhov Front were ordered to mount diversionary attacks of their own to spread German attention thin.
Yet even before the offensive could begin in earnest, cracks were already showing in the preparation. Limited railway capacity and poor logistical organisation slowed the redeployment of forces from the very start, and further delays followed as several formations had to be withdrawn for replenishment before they could even be committed to the front — a frustrating and costly process that ate into the time available before the planned attack.
This week, General Kurochkin's renewed Demyansk offensive opened with a series of poorly supplied local attacks conducted by the 27th, 34th, and 53rd Armies. The entrenched German 2nd Corps had little difficulty repelling these probing efforts. Worse, from the Soviet perspective, the attacks failed even in their secondary purpose: they drew off no German reserves whatsoever, while simultaneously draining precious supplies away from what was meant to be the main Soviet effort.
That main attack finally began on the 10th, but it was hamstrung from the outset by a critical shortage of artillery ammunition — enough, in the end, for only a ten-minute preparatory bombardment. Such a brief barrage barely scratched the defences of Corps Group Knobelsdorff, which had been considerably strengthened in the interval between Soviet offensives. The 11th Army then threw six rifle divisions and more than a hundred tanks into the assault, while the 1st Shock Army provided supporting pressure from the south with three further rifle divisions and around thirty tanks of its own. But the Soviet shock groups quickly found themselves trapped within intact German obstacle belts, torn apart by mutually supporting positions that the brief bombardment had failed to suppress. Dense minefields added to the carnage, inflicting heavy casualties that included, notably, the commander of the 1st Guards Rifle Corps himself. After a full week of grinding combat, Soviet forces had managed to advance only a few hundred meters — a devastatingly poor return on the blood spent.
Meanwhile, the Rzhev "meatgrinder" — already infamous for consuming men on both sides — continued to live up to its grim reputation. German forces withdrawn from the ongoing Operation Wirbelwind were redirected to launch a counterattack on the 9th, striking out from Sychevka and Karmanovo. What followed was a major meeting engagement of the kind that both sides increasingly found themselves fighting in this sector, as reinforcements poured in from every available direction. Zhukov ultimately committed roughly 800 tanks to the fighting, while Model matched him with around 700 of his own. Even the right flank of the Soviet 5th Army was drawn into the maelstrom. The battle raged until the 10th and, on balance, ended as a tactical Soviet victory — yet the cost had been severe enough that Soviet forces were left too depleted to press any further major advances in its immediate aftermath. Halder, reviewing the losses on the 13th, described German panzer casualties as "deeply unpleasant" — an unusually candid admission from a man not given to dramatic understatement. By the 14th, continued Soviet pressure had grown severe enough that Hitler was forced to approve a modest withdrawal of the 256th Infantry and 14th Motorised Divisions to more defensible lines.
The situation deteriorated further on the 13th, when the Soviet offensive widened to include an attack by the 33rd Army against the German 3rd Panzer Army. Several breakthroughs pointed ominously toward Gzhatsk, apparently in an effort to link up with the 31st Army operating around Karmanovo. However, because the 33rd Army had entered the fray relatively late, whatever element of surprise the wider offensive might once have possessed had already been squandered. The Germans absorbed the initial shock and hastily brought up reserves — including an infantry division transferred from the 4th Army on the 13th — to blunt the Soviet advance. What followed was a brutal contest for every building and terrain feature. The 243rd Rifle Division's assault group, for instance, found itself counterattacked no fewer than fourteen times at the village of Kopytikh, while managing only eight attacks of its own in return. Some Soviet after-action reports made the grim claim that when bunkers were finally cleared, the defenders inside were often found chained to their machine guns — whether literal fact or battlefield legend, the story speaks to the desperate, no-quarter character of the fighting.
While the 9th Army wrestled with this deepening crisis, Operation Wirbelwind finally got underway on the 11th, its start delayed by heavy rain. The plan called for the 53rd and 41st Corps to strike toward Ulyanovo from the southeast and west respectively, before crossing the Zhizdra river and linking up with the 4th Army roughly 100 kilometers distant. Progress on the first day was wildly uneven: while the 11th Panzer Division managed to reach the vicinity of Ulyanovo, the remaining divisions involved in the assault advanced less than two kilometers.
Standing in their way was a formidable defensive system built by General Bagramian, stretching back to the Zhizdra and reinforced by extensive minefields that severely constrained German freedom of movement. The 1st Guards Cavalry Corps mounted a series of determined counterattacks aimed at slowing the German advance still further. Compounding matters for the attackers, German intelligence had entirely missed the presence of the 3rd Tank Corps, which had been quietly refitting east of Belev following the earlier Oryol offensive. This formation reacted with impressive speed to help block the German assault, even as further Soviet reinforcements — including the 10th Tank Corps and the 5th Guards Rifle Corps — were fed into the escalating battle. Soviet infantry, true to form in this sector, frequently fought to the very last man rather than yield ground. Parts of three Soviet rifle divisions found themselves encircled on the very first day of the German attack; they eventually broke out during the night of the 14th, though only at a heavy cost in casualties. By the 15th, the German attack's momentum had visibly faded along the Zhizdra, leaving only a small bridgehead to show for days of costly fighting.
Meanwhile, the German 4th Army proved unable to mount even a token supporting offensive of its own, having been stripped of ever more of its formations in the ongoing effort to shore up the beleaguered 3rd Panzer and 9th Armies. Its remaining divisions were left holding fronts as wide as 24 kilometers each, spreading them so thin that they amounted to little more than scattered picket lines rather than a coherent defensive front.
The human cost of this fighting was staggering. Between July 30th and August 14th, the German 9th Army alone lost more than 15,000 men, with each additional day of combat around Rzhev adding roughly another 1,000 casualties to the grim tally. The resulting shortage of fit, combat-ready manpower now threatened to collapse the entire sector outright. Field Marshal Kluge, recognising the danger, recommended calling off the faltering Wirbelwind operation on the 14th, arguing bluntly that it was not worth risking the loss of Rzhev itself or crippling the already battered 3rd Panzer Army in a futile continuation of the offensive. Halder, for his part, resisted this recommendation — apparently too afraid to be the one to deliver such unwelcome news to Hitler in person. That evening, however, Halder did manage to persuade Hitler to reroute the 72nd Infantry Division from the 11th Army over to Army Group Center, while also securing the assignment of the elite Grossdeutschland division to the same sector rather than sending it to France as originally planned. Unfortunately, the 72nd Infantry was still located in Crimea at the time, and Grossdeutschland was stationed near Rostov — both well over 1,000 kilometers from where they were needed. Given the chronically dysfunctional state of the German rail network, it would take at least a week merely to move the first division to Smolensk, and the second would not fully arrive until early September at the earliest. As a further gesture of support, Kluge was also promised additional air cover for his hard-pressed forces.
At Voronezh, the Bryansk Front's latest offensive opened on the 12th. Following a brief but intense thirteen-minute artillery barrage, General Chibisov's shock groups managed to punch through the forward German defensive line and push forward roughly 1.5 kilometers before bogging down against progressively stronger successive lines of defence. Heavy Luftwaffe airstrikes combined with the timely arrival of German infantry reinforcements prevented the Soviets from resuming their offensive on the 13th as planned. Once again, the persistent Soviet weakness in infantry-tank coordination reasserted itself, with the two arms frequently fighting what amounted to separate, uncoordinated battles rather than mutually supporting one another as doctrine demanded.
Supporting attacks launched by the 60th and 40th Armies met with the same disappointing fate, collapsing without drawing in a single German reserve formation from elsewhere along the front. On the 15th, STAVKA finally called a halt to the entire offensive — a decision that suggests the Soviet high command was beginning, however gradually, to recognise the futility of continuing costly attacks that yielded essentially nothing in return. Two tank corps were pulled back to the rear for much-needed restoration, while Chibisov himself was instructed to dig in and consolidate whatever meagre gains his forces had managed to secure.
Meanwhile, along the Don, Italian forces began arriving in earnest between the 12th and 15th, taking up positions in the gap between the German 2nd and 6th Armies. Some German infantry units remained in place to stiffen the newly arriving Italian line, while sections of the Italian front were assigned to cover the dangerous Soviet bridgehead near Serafimovich. Around this time, the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia (CSIR) was formally reorganised into the 35th Corps as part of the broader restructuring of Axis forces along this stretch of the front. Elsewhere on the same sector, Hungarian troops launched a small-scale attack against the Soviet 25th Guards Rifle Division defending the Uryv bridgehead, but the assault failed outright, at a heavy cost in Hungarian lives.
To the southeast, Paulus's forces spent two grueling days compressing the encircled remnants of the Soviet 62nd Army into an ever-shrinking pocket, which by the 10th had been squeezed down to roughly six kilometers in width. Every Soviet attempt to break out of the encirclement failed under the weight of constant airstrikes and a tightly maintained German cordon. Organised resistance within the pocket finally collapsed on the 11th. The scale of the disaster for the Soviets was severe: seven rifle divisions, two motorised rifle brigades, and seven tank brigades were effectively wiped from the order of battle. The Germans claimed some 35,000 prisoners, along with 270 tanks and 560 artillery pieces either destroyed or captured outright. General Lopatin was left with a mere 3,700 survivors with which to hold the vital crossing point at Kalach.
The historian Robert Citino has described the fighting at Kalach as the first genuinely successful large-scale encirclement of the entire summer offensive of 1942. German estimates suggested that, since July 23rd alone, Paulus had captured some 57,000 Soviet soldiers and destroyed or seized roughly 1,000 tanks along with approximately 750 artillery pieces — an extraordinary haul by any measure. Yet despite these impressive figures, both OKH and OKW remained anxious that any further delay in the advance would allow additional Soviet reinforcements to reach Stalingrad before the city could be taken. Paulus was accordingly ordered to clear the remaining Don bend west of Ilovlinskaya, then force a breakthrough toward Stalingrad via Kachalinskaya, ultimately capturing the city in cooperation with Hoth's 4th Panzer Army advancing from the south.
To accomplish this, Paulus shifted the bulk of his forces some 25 kilometers to the north with the intention of crushing the Soviet 4th Tank Army, leaving only the 71st Infantry Division behind as a thin screening force between Kalach and Nizhniy Chirskaya. The 4th Tank Army, for its part, was already in dire straits — its fuel and ammunition stocks were nearly exhausted, and its three rifle divisions could muster fewer than 800 men between them, a shadow of their nominal strength. On the 13th, the German 11th Corps launched a diversionary attack south of Kletskaia intended to draw in whatever Soviet reserves might be lurking nearby. The ploy succeeded admirably, pulling in reserves under Kruichenkin's command and prompting General Gordov to dispatch additional reinforcements to bolster the beleaguered 4th Tank Army.
The main assault, designated Operation Nord, then began in earnest on the 15th, backed by heavy support from the German 8th Air Force. By nightfall, the 60th Motorised Division had reached the Don near Sirotinskaya, while the 16th Panzer Division had overrun Kryuchyonkin's own headquarters, effectively cutting the Soviet 4th Tank Army in two. A secondary German thrust by the 24th Corps had, meanwhile, pushed forward to Akimovskii. In response to this rapidly deteriorating situation, Gordov ordered Moskalenko's 1st Guards Army to rush forward from Ilovlia Station in an effort to rescue the encircled remnants of the 62nd Army and mount a counterattack of its own. STAVKA subsequently ordered Gordov himself to personally supervise this critical counterattack, underscoring just how seriously Moscow now viewed the unfolding crisis.
Even as this fighting raged, the Quartermaster of the 6th Army delivered a sobering warning to both Field Marshal Weichs and OKH: the task of assembling adequate winter supplies for the coming season would prove "very considerably greater" than it had been the previous winter. By his calculations, the total requirement for winter supplies through May of 1943 amounted to some 1,452 trainloads of 600 tons apiece — an almost unimaginable logistical burden. Fully half of these trainloads would need to arrive before the onset of the autumn rasputitsa, the notorious mud season that annually paralysed movement across the region. Given the crippling limitations of the existing transportation network, even a partial fulfillment of this requirement appeared virtually impossible to achieve.
Back on the 9th, General Yeremenko had received an urgent query from Vasilevskii, who was relaying questions directly on behalf of Stalin himself. Stalin had finally decided to unify the defence of Stalingrad under a single unified command structure. Accordingly, the Stalingrad Front was subordinated to Yeremenko's Southeastern Front. Golikov was made Yeremenko's deputy, while Moskalenko took over as commander of the 1st Guards Army in his place. Stalin also floated the idea of appointing the NKVD officer Sarayev to command the Stalingrad city garrison, and pointedly asked Yeremenko for his personal opinion on these various nominations. Yeremenko's reply was a masterclass in bluntly obsequious deference: "There is no being cleverer than comrade Stalin, and I consider this particularly correct and timely… Excellent candidates." The directive establishing the new command arrangement took effect that very same day. Gordov remained deputy commander of the Stalingrad Front under Yeremenko's overall authority, while Khrushchev was appointed political commissar for both fronts simultaneously. While this new arrangement undeniably improved coordination between the two fronts, it also meant that Yeremenko now found himself juggling two fronts, two deputies, two chiefs of staff, and two entirely separate staff groups — an enormous administrative and command burden for any single officer to bear.
With German forces now closing in on Stalingrad's outer defensive perimeter, known as Line O, both General Zhukov and Vasilevskii were ordered to fly directly to Stalingrad to assess the situation on the ground and report back to Moscow. Malenkov and Novikov were likewise dispatched to lend Yeremenko additional support. On the 12th, Vasilevskii and Yeremenko together concluded that the Soviet 4th Tank Army would soon come under heavy attack, and that Paulus intended to force a crossing of the Don in careful coordination with Hoth's simultaneous advance from the south. Around this same time, Malyshev, the Deputy Chairman of the GKO, arrived in the region tasked with securing Stalingrad's supply system and improving the sorely strained efficiency of both rail and Volga river traffic into the increasingly threatened city.
At dawn on the 9th, General Shumilov launched a counterattack against the German 48th Corps using three rifle divisions supported by a tank corps. The Germans, caught off guard, had not anticipated any major attack in this sector. That evening, a brigade of formidable KV heavy tanks arrived to reinforce the ongoing offensive, touching off a fierce two-day battle that raged along the vital Tikhoretsk–Stalingrad railroad line. Under this pressure, Kempf's Corps was forced to fall back some 5 to 10 kilometers, settling along the Plodovitoe–Abganerovo line. In a bid to assist Kempf's beleaguered forces, Romanian troops attempted a supporting attack across the Aksai river near Zalivskii, but this effort failed outright, incurring heavy losses in the process.
Following these setbacks, Hoth spent several days working to stabilise his army's front line. By the 12th, the sector had largely quieted down and would remain relatively calm until the 17th. It had become abundantly clear that his carefully planned operation had stalled for want of adequate resources, and that any renewal of the offensive would require substantial reinforcement. Accordingly, the 24th Panzer and 297th Infantry Divisions were transferred from Paulus's command over to Hoth's on the 12th, in recognition of this pressing need.
On the 12th, the intelligence branch Foreign Armies East released a report that effectively dismissed the presumed 30-odd Soviet divisions believed to be stationed in Transcaucasia, judging them to be critically short on manpower, equipment, and morale alike. That same day, Halder informed Hitler that the Soviet Caucasus Army was, in his assessment, increasingly heading toward outright disintegration. A few days later, Foreign Armies East went further still, arguing that Army Group A's capture of some 390,000 Soviet soldiers within just six weeks constituted clear proof that the Soviet strategy of deliberately avoiding decisive battle had ultimately failed. Even so, the report was careful to note that there remained, as yet, no evidence "of a general flagging of enemy resistance" — and the analysts freely admitted they simply could not be certain how many of the badly mauled Soviet formations might still prove capable of putting up an effective fight when it mattered most.
On the 9th, the German 5th Corps captured the city of Krasnodar from the Soviet 56th Army despite battling not only determined resistance but also brutal environmental conditions, including 38-degree Celsius heat and a blinding dust storm. Fresh orders directed the corps to cross the Kuban river and seize the Black Sea coastal ports as far south as Tuapse. Their initial attempts to force a crossing of the Kuban failed outright, however, when retreating Soviet engineers succeeded in demolishing every local bridge before German infantry could reach them. Adding to the setback, Krasnodar's substantial oil refinery had also been thoroughly destroyed by the withdrawing Soviets. It ultimately took the 5th Corps a full five days to reorganise and establish even a modest bridgehead across the river, with a pontoon bridge finally completed by nightfall on the 14th. When German forces attempted to expand this newly won bridgehead, however, they encountered deeply entrenched Soviet defensive lines waiting for them. Worse still, from the German perspective, List reported experiencing "absolute enemy superiority in the air" in this sector — a startling reversal after weeks of largely unchallenged Luftwaffe dominance. Any hope of a rapid advance was now clearly out of the question; only slow, methodical attacks remained a realistic option. Two divisions accordingly began a cautious push toward Krymskaya, while Wetzel's remaining two infantry divisions attempted to drive the Soviet 56th Army back into the surrounding mountains.
Supporting the German infantry in this sector was the Romanian 3rd Army, which had already secured the port of Eysk on the 9th. Working in cooperation with German S-boats and K-boats, Romanian forces succeeded in clearing the eastern coastline of the Sea of Azov of any remaining Soviet presence. The army was now tasked with clearing the Taman Peninsula entirely, assisting the battered remnants of the 11th Army as they crossed over from Crimea, and would soon move to isolate the still-intact Soviet 47th Army, which remained stubbornly holding out on the Taman Peninsula. In response, the Soviets established a dedicated naval aviation fighter group at Novorossiysk specifically to protect this vital port and to prevent the Luftwaffe from interdicting the critical supply runs feeding into the city. This lifeline proved crucial, allowing the 47th Army to remain adequately supplied and continue holding its ground against mounting pressure. Meanwhile, the planned crossing operation from Crimea, codenamed Blücher II, stood ready by the 12th. Fuel supplies remained a persistent concern right up until the last moment, and the operation now awaited only favourable weather conditions suitable for the specialised Siebel ferries involved. The operation would also require dedicated air support from the already dangerously overstretched Luftflotte 4.
East of Ruoff's sector, Kleist's rapid armoured advance continued apace. The city of Maykop fell on the 9th to the combined efforts of the German 3rd and 57th Corps. During this advance, German rear-area units repeatedly came under attack from scattered Soviet groups attempting to withdraw southward through the chaos. To counter this threat and seize the city itself, the Germans made extensive use of massed artillery fire, concentrated Stuka dive-bomber support, specialised Brandenburger commando teams, and even troops disguised in captured Soviet uniforms — all aimed at sowing maximum confusion within Maykop's defences. Organised resistance was ultimately crushed by the 10th. However, the operation also produced another significant traffic jam of German divisions attempting to funnel through the captured city, closely mirroring the earlier congestion problems experienced at Rostov. Compounding matters further, the various infiltration efforts had ultimately failed to prevent Soviet engineers and rear-guard security troops from thoroughly carrying out their scorched-earth demolition orders. This failure was made considerably worse by a critical German intelligence error: the Wehrmacht had mistakenly believed that virtually all of Maykop's valuable oil rigs were located within the city itself. In grim reality, only about a dozen of the roughly 150 rigs in the wider Maykop oil district actually stood within city limits — the great bulk of the remainder lay scattered some 50 kilometers to the southwest, well beyond the reach of the rapid German assault.
Hitler had long harboured hopes that the sheer speed of the German advance would allow these vital oil facilities to be captured largely intact. These hopes ultimately proved entirely misplaced, as the Soviet demolition effort turned out to be thoroughly systematic in its execution. The oil wells themselves had been completely blocked and filled in, requiring the laborious drilling of entirely new shafts before production could resume, while every significant above-ground facility had been methodically destroyed. Roads and electrical infrastructure throughout the region had likewise been deliberately wrecked beyond easy repair. To make matters worse, German repair estimates had somehow entirely failed to account for the difficult mountainous, heavily forested terrain that would complicate any reconstruction effort. A dedicated 6,500-man Technical Brigade Mineral Oil had already been formed specifically to restore the damaged fields and eventually raise annual output to some 3.5 million tons. But achieving this ambitious goal would require considerable time, heavy specialised equipment, and reliable protection from ongoing Soviet or partisan attacks — none of which were readily available. The brigade's advance battalion had followed closely on the heels of the panzer spearheads into the region, only to find itself repeatedly attacked by bypassed Soviet troops still operating throughout the surrounding countryside.
With Maykop now firmly in German hands, List determined that the 57th and 44th Corps would be transferred over to the 17th Army's command, leaving Ruoff to clear the remaining Black Sea coastline largely on his own initiative. The battered remnants of Kleist's Panzer Army were instead tasked with securing the strategically vital cities of Grozny and Baku, while the 49th Mountain Corps pressed on southward to seize the critical passes through the Caucasus range itself. Hitler, however, intervened directly in these plans, ordering the two German mountain divisions redirected west of Mount Elbrus instead. This left only the largely untested Romanian mountain division to secure the passes lying east of Elbrus — a decision that would have significant consequences for the campaign's later stages.
All of these various movements away from the direct approach to Baku, however, brought German forces into heavily wooded, mountainous terrain that proved profoundly ill-suited to their preferred tactics. The constricted, difficult terrain forced German units into costly frontal attacks and allowed Soviet artillery to effectively interdict the handful of available roads through the region. Progress inevitably slowed to a crawl. Supply arrangements suffered badly as well, since food could no longer be readily brought forward from field kitchens along the difficult mountain tracks, leaving many German soldiers hungry and forced to go without hot meals for extended periods. Horses, rather than motor transport, increasingly had to be used to move artillery pieces and ammunition, since trucks simply could not cope with the punishing terrain.
By mid-August, the 57th and 44th Corps had managed to reach only the Khadyzhensk and Dakhovskaya areas in their slow advance. When the SS Wiking division finally reached the Khadyzhensk oil fields, its soldiers found every well already burning fiercely, the product of yet another thorough Soviet demolition effort. Meanwhile, the 16th Motorised Division failed in its attempt to capture Apsheronsk and the nearby Neftyanaya oil centre. On the 15th, this division was ordered to rejoin Kleist's main force as the 44th Corps's own infantry began arriving in the area. The 101st Jäger Division subsequently captured Apsheronsk that same day, while SS Wiking and the Slovak Fast Division remained behind to guard the 44th Corps's exposed flank against the persistent threat posed by roaming Soviet cavalry units.
Meanwhile, the 49th Mountain Corps had been forced to conduct several days of exhausting forced marches simply to keep pace with Kleist's faster-moving panzer formations. By the 11th, these mountain troops had successfully occupied Cherkessk and crossed the Upper Kuban river, from which position they continued marching toward the imposing Greater Caucasus range and the towering peak of Mount Elbrus itself. Back in Berlin, Goebbels and other senior figures pressured List to arrange for a Nazi flag to be planted symbolically atop Europe's highest peak, purely for propaganda purposes and entirely regardless of any genuine operational value such a gesture might carry. On the Soviet side, General Tyulenev did not get around to ordering the mountain passes properly defended until the 10th. General Sergatskov's 46th Army then proceeded to deploy with what even Soviet sources would later condemn as extreme lethargy. Sergatskov ultimately dispatched only scattered company and battalion-sized detachments from the 3rd Mountain Rifle Corps to cover these critical passes — a wholly inadequate response given the stakes involved. One such detachment was ambushed by German mountaineers at Teberda on the 14th, suffering accordingly for the inadequacy of Soviet preparations in this sector.
On the Caspian side of the Caucasus range, the German 40th Corps had reached the river Kuma and the town of Pyatigorsk by the 10th. Ahead of their advance, large Red Army formations chose to flee southward along the Georgian Military Highway rather than attempt any organised stand against the oncoming Germans. Yet the German advance once again ran out of fuel at a critical juncture, while its already strained logistical support stretched back as far as the Manych river and remained under constant threat from bypassed Soviet units operating in the German rear. Fatigue among the troops worsened considerably as well, exacerbated by local temperatures that reportedly reached a punishing 52 degrees Celsius. Kleist found himself compelled to spend three full days dispatching special detachments to hunt down the scattered Soviet troops that continued harassing his vulnerable lines of communication. Once this problem had been sufficiently addressed, the 40th Corps had its original orders reaffirmed: capture Grozny, then Makhachkala, and finally push on to Baku itself. The 3rd Corps was likewise diverted away from Maykop toward Grozny in a supporting role, while a Romanian mountain division was attached to the 40th Corps specifically to help secure the passes along the Ossetian and Georgian military highways.
It was not until the 13th that the 40th Corps finally resumed its advance from Pyatigorsk, and even then only in the form of small, dispersed battlegroups rather than a unified push. These forces soon ran headlong into General Kozlov's 37th Army, which had dug in along the Malka river in a determined defensive posture. Forcing a crossing here consumed the better part of an entire day, and German forces then ran into precisely the same difficulty when they reached the considerably wider Baksan river beyond it. Not only had every bridge across the Baksan been thoroughly demolished, but the upriver dam had been deliberately blown as well, dramatically increasing river currents and making any attempt at fording the waterway substantially more hazardous and difficult than it might otherwise have been.
Crucially, Soviet forces were no longer simply retreating before the advancing 1st Panzer Army as they had for much of the preceding weeks. With Luftflotte 4 increasingly diverting its attention and resources toward the developing battle for Stalingrad, air cover available to the 40th Corps weakened rapidly, even as Soviet VVS air strikes grew noticeably more frequent and considerably more effective in their execution. The corps found itself under near-constant artillery and air attack, with precious little capacity remaining to retaliate in kind.
While the panzer formations struggled through the Caucasus mountains and fought their way across successive river obstacles, the infantry of the 52nd Corps marched steadily across the open expanse of the Kalmyk Steppe toward the Caspian shore, tasked with protecting Kleist's exposed northern flank throughout this advance. By the 12th, the 370th Infantry Division had taken up its assigned position, thereby freeing detachments of the 23rd Panzer Division to return to more active duty with the 40th Corps. Meanwhile, the 111th Infantry Division pushed on beyond the 370th's position and successfully captured the town of Elista on that same day. Kleist, for his part, clearly recognised the underlying absurdity of employing slow-moving leg infantry in this manner to guard a flank meant to support fast-moving armoured operations. On the 15th, he formally requested that the 16th Motorised Division take over responsibility for guarding this flank instead, thereby freeing his infantry formations to assist more directly with the difficult crossing of the Terek river.
These continued German advances across the Caucasus forced a series of significant Soviet reorganisations in response. On the 11th, the Don Operational Group was formally abolished, and the 37th Army was transferred over to the Trans-Caucasus Front with explicit orders to withdraw from contact and undergo a thorough refit. Around the same time, Maslennikov's Northern Group was placed under Tyulenev's overall command as well. Throughout the entirety of this week, Tyulenev worked with considerable urgency to reorganise his scattered and thoroughly demoralised retreating forces into something resembling a coherent fighting force once more. These strenuous efforts ultimately allowed him to establish a workable defensive line along the Terek river. The subsequent arrival of additional formations from Grozny and other nearby regions further enabled him to begin assembling dedicated counterattack forces in the rear areas of his front, in preparation for future operations. Similarly, on the 10th, STAVKA issued a warning to Marshal Budyonny that the Maykop–Tuapse axis represented the most seriously threatened sector under his overall command. In direct response to this warning, Budyonny shifted the 17th Corps forward to cover the Pshish river, while positioning the 12th and 18th Armies to block the various routes leading southwest away from Maykop. The 32nd Guards Rifle Division was additionally dispatched to cover the vital roads connecting Lazarevskaya and Tuapse, further reinforcing this critical sector against the anticipated German advance.
Lastly, on August 12th, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin met face to face in Moscow for what would prove to be a famously tense and difficult summit. Stalin opened proceedings by painting a stark picture of the ongoing crisis unfolding along the Eastern Front, while nonetheless insisting firmly that the Soviet Union remained fully determined to hold Stalingrad against whatever the Germans might throw at it. He then turned his attention to pressing Churchill directly on the long-promised question of a Second Front in Western Europe. Churchill was forced to admit that no invasion of the continent could realistically be mounted before 1942 concluded, though he assured Stalin that preparations were, at least tentatively, already underway for a possible operation in 1943. Stalin's reaction was one of undisguised fury. He proceeded to bombard Churchill with a series of alternative proposals — seizing the Channel Islands, or perhaps Cherbourg — while pointedly asking why the British seemed so evidently afraid of confronting the Germans directly. Relations between the two leaders improved only somewhat when Churchill went on to outline detailed plans for intensifying the ongoing strategic bombing campaign against Germany. Tensions eased further still once he explained the plans for Operation Torch, along with the likely follow-up invasion of Italy that Allied planners had in mind.
However, the following meeting on the 13th got off to an equally rocky start, with Stalin effectively accusing the British of outright cowardice, among a string of other similarly provocative statements calculated to wound. Churchill's response to this pointed charge of cowardice appears, by most accounts, to have somewhat mollified Stalin's evident anger. Rather less of substance followed on the 14th, a day largely dominated by an elaborate state dinner rather than any serious business. Then, on the 15th, a considerably more cordial meeting finally took place, attended only by the two leaders themselves along with their respective interpreters. There, the two men discussed further plans, including the upcoming Allied raid on Dieppe, intended to help keep German forces tied down along the French coast, as well as detailed Soviet plans for the defence of both the Caucasus and Stalingrad. Afterward, the two leaders retired together to Stalin's private apartment for a lengthy dinner accompanied by a considerable quantity of alcohol. During this more relaxed encounter, the historian Richard Overy claims that Churchill directly asked Stalin whether he might be forgiven for his own long history of hostility toward the Soviet system. Stalin's characteristically enigmatic response has since become well known: "It's for God to forgive — not me. In the end, history will judge us."
Churchill departed the Soviet Union the following day, having succeeded in establishing what amounted to little more than a thin veneer of superficial friendliness between the two wartime allies. Talks between British and Soviet military staff officers continued for some time afterward, though with little tangible result. General Voronov came away from these subsequent discussions thoroughly convinced that the British secretly expected the Red Army to collapse under German pressure, and remained deeply suspicious of what he considered their "excessive" interest in the strategic situation unfolding in the Caucasus specifically. These military talks ultimately petered out once the Soviet side realised that Britain could offer, in practical terms, only eight squadrons of aircraft — and even this modest commitment only if the situation in North Africa happened to improve favourably in the meantime. The overall meeting served, in the end, to confirm for Stalin and the wider Soviet leadership a hard truth they could no longer avoid: there would be no outside saviour coming to rescue the Soviet Union from its current predicament. The USSR would have to win the coming campaign entirely on its own, or else be utterly destroyed in the attempt.

Kleist's panzers seized Maykop, but Soviet demolitions wrecked its oil fields, dashing German hopes of quick fuel gains. Advances toward Grozny and Baku slowed amid mountains, fuel shortages, and stiffening resistance. Meanwhile, Stalin and Churchill clashed furiously in Moscow over the missing Second Front, leaving Soviets convinced they'd fight alone.
