Red state lieutenant governor says Dem Senate candidate will 'go to hell'

Dan Patrick’s Gospel of Power

The Real Authority

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is not some random heckler at a political gathering. He is the presiding officer of the Texas Senate, a Trump ally, and the kind of official who can turn private grievance into public machinery. When he speaks about faith, he does so from inside the state, not from its margins.

That matters because this was not a theological debate. It was an exercise in institutional intimidation delivered by someone who helps shape Texas power.

What the Source Says

At the Texas GOP convention in Houston, Patrick told Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico he would “go to hell” over his Bible interpretations. Talarico, a state representative and Christian, has made faith part of his campaign. Patrick responded by accusing him of weaponizing religion, while Talarico fired back that Patrick had spent decades selling out “the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable” to enrich donors.

The same convention also featured Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Patrick’s role in Republican politics was reinforced by the fact that Trump chose him to lead a Religious Liberty Commission.

The Blame Shift

Patrick’s line is a classic inversion: the man with office, platform, and state authority claims the candidate is the one importing religion into politics. That is misdirection, not analysis. Talarico’s faith may be visible in his campaign. Patrick’s power is visible in lawmaking, state office, and his ability to turn a partisan stage into a judgment seat.

He is not merely arguing scripture. He is using the language of salvation and damnation to mark a political enemy as morally exiled. That is not “faith in politics” so much as political coercion dressed in piety.

Weaponized Holiness

The applause matters as much as the insult. Patrick was not improvising in isolation. He was performing for a party audience primed to reward religious contempt when it is directed downward and called conviction when it is aimed upward.

This is the familiar Republican arrangement in Texas: invoke Christian values as public authority, then use that authority to discipline opponents, celebrate punitive policy, and launder raw partisanship through sanctimony. The Ten Commandments fight Patrick championed is part of the same pattern. So is the Religious Liberty Commission. So is the claim that the state is defending faith while it is actually enforcing a hierarchy.

The Pattern Beneath It

The deeper story is not that one politician said something offensive. It is that Texas Republican power keeps fusing government, theology, and donor politics into one machine, then pretending the machine is under siege. Patrick’s attack on Talarico reveals how that machine works: it sanctifies itself, demonizes dissent, and calls the result righteousness.

When power speaks in the language of damnation, it is usually because argument is no longer enough.
