WEBVTT
00:00:00.239 -->
00:00:01.520Hey everybody.
00:00:01.840 -->
00:00:03.120What's going on?
00:00:03.439 -->
00:00:03.759Hi.
00:00:04.160 -->
00:00:04.639Hello.
00:00:05.120 -->
00:00:06.160How are you?
00:00:06.639 -->
00:00:07.200Hello.
00:00:07.360 -->
00:00:08.320How are you?
00:00:09.119 -->
00:00:09.439Hi.
00:00:10.560 -->
00:00:11.359Oh my god.
00:00:11.439 -->
00:00:11.759Hi.
00:00:11.919 -->
00:00:12.640How are you?
00:00:12.800 -->
00:00:14.480I haven't seen you in so long.
00:00:14.640 -->
00:00:15.439You look great.
00:00:15.599 -->
00:00:16.000All right.
00:00:16.320 -->
00:00:16.719Bye.
00:00:17.519 -->
00:00:19.120Hey guys, how's it going?
00:00:19.280 -->
00:00:20.719Gosh, should I miss you?
00:00:20.960 -->
00:00:28.160Hey, first of all, with this new renegade Maverick style of podcasts, you just never know when it's coming out.
00:00:28.239 -->
00:00:29.280But I did have an idea.
00:00:29.359 -->
00:00:31.120I don't know if I'm going to commit to this yet.
00:00:31.600 -->
00:00:33.520Don't ask me to commit to anything.
00:00:33.840 -->
00:00:39.679We are really enjoying being non-committal to shipping podcast episodes.
00:00:39.759 -->
00:00:43.280But I will say I've I've had a lot been going on.
00:00:43.359 -->
00:00:50.399There's a lot of life, there's a lot of fire hose just tearing the skin off my face, but in a good way, in a good way.
00:00:50.640 -->
00:00:52.719Sort of like a chemical peel.
00:00:52.960 -->
00:01:01.920And um, but it it occurred to me that I don't know when, maybe half six months ago, I was getting into the different names for the full moons.
00:01:02.079 -->
00:01:07.519And then a friend texted me that uh, in fact, November 5th was the beaver moon.
00:01:07.599 -->
00:01:16.319So I was gonna record this last night, but then I was coaching uh these sixth grade basketball players, and uh that's that's not going well.
00:01:16.480 -->
00:01:18.000But anyway, that's for another time.
00:01:18.079 -->
00:01:22.079But anyway, I couldn't record on the beaver moon, but still the moon is bright.
00:01:22.239 -->
00:01:32.079I feel like I I'm getting um sunburned, honestly, with how bright it is with the moon, the with the beaver moon, and it is a beautiful beaver moon.
00:01:32.239 -->
00:01:40.319So, really what we're gonna do tonight on the starting stand-up podcast is um we're gonna talk all things beaver.
00:02:08.240 -->
00:02:10.000And I've been diving deep.
00:02:10.080 -->
00:02:15.039I spent a few weeks at the library to figure it out, and here's what I found.
00:02:15.280 -->
00:02:24.719So, beaver, a lot of people think, oh, of course, beaver is a slang for vagina because beavers chew wood.
00:02:24.960 -->
00:02:27.120And I'm here to tell you that that's bullshit.
00:02:27.280 -->
00:02:39.680Obviously, beavers chew wood, and obviously that makes it even better that a vagina slang term is beaver, but it has nothing to do with why we use the word beaver.
00:02:39.919 -->
00:02:41.439A little side note here.
00:02:41.599 -->
00:02:44.639I just want you to know that I love words.
00:02:44.800 -->
00:02:47.120My favorite word in eighth grade was bucket.
00:02:47.199 -->
00:02:48.560I just like saying it.
00:02:48.719 -->
00:02:51.280A bit of a I'm a I'm a word nerd.
00:02:52.800 -->
00:02:56.479But in a close second, beaver, beaver.
00:02:56.639 -->
00:02:58.000It's just say it say it.
00:02:58.159 -->
00:02:58.719I'm gonna pause.
00:02:58.879 -->
00:03:01.680Say it right now a few times, chew on it.
00:03:02.479 -->
00:03:03.280That's it.
00:03:03.439 -->
00:03:10.639A little louder, a little louder, and now scream, I love that's it.
00:03:10.800 -->
00:03:12.400I love beaver.
00:03:12.879 -->
00:03:14.560Yeah, there you go.
00:03:15.039 -->
00:03:17.919I'm trying to share the joy of saying it.
00:03:18.319 -->
00:03:33.680And that's part of the reason why this full moon, not the full buck moon, not the harvest moon, the beaver moon is the brightest, it's it's the closest it's been, it's the biggest moon of the year this year.
00:03:34.159 -->
00:03:37.039It's so bright, it's so beautiful.
00:03:37.280 -->
00:03:40.240Everybody loves beaver moons.
00:03:40.800 -->
00:03:45.840And that is why this entire podcast will be dedicated to it.
00:03:46.080 -->
00:03:55.280Now, beaver is slang for vagina primarily due to the visual resemblance between the furry beaver animal and pubic care.
00:03:55.759 -->
00:04:00.159There's also some cultural taboos around openly discussing genitalia.
00:04:00.400 -->
00:04:04.240So instead of saying vagina, you can say beav.
00:04:05.280 -->
00:04:10.319It started uh 1920s, in where else?
00:04:10.560 -->
00:04:13.199The capital of perversion.
00:04:13.439 -->
00:04:20.240The capital per capita most perverts on earth, Great Britain.
00:04:20.720 -->
00:04:22.800And they just hide it so beautifully.
00:04:22.879 -->
00:04:35.519They're all proper, but you the the the glint in a perverted aristocrat in London, that little wink, they are just sick fucks over there.
00:04:35.839 -->
00:04:38.319And I've got a lot of respect for it.
00:04:38.480 -->
00:04:39.680A lot of respect.
00:04:40.319 -->
00:04:48.720My sidebar, my favorite kind of human being is someone who is really pulled together and looks really pulled together.
00:04:48.879 -->
00:04:54.319And you can never, you would never guess that they are complete degenerate.
00:04:54.480 -->
00:05:00.160But but occasionally at like one in the morning, you'll see someone and they just can't, they have no off switch.
00:05:00.319 -->
00:05:02.399And the top, but the tie is still tight.
00:05:02.720 -->
00:05:04.720The jacket is still on.
00:05:05.120 -->
00:05:07.360Just a ton of respect for someone like that.
00:05:07.600 -->
00:05:12.480Anyway, yeah, beaver was used to refer to bearded men originally, actually.
00:05:12.639 -->
00:05:18.399It was, you know, drawing on the similarity between beards and beaver pelts, fuzzy and brownish, right?
00:05:18.639 -->
00:05:25.120Anyway, this visual metaphor, it eventually extended to female pubic hair in the genital area.
00:05:25.279 -->
00:05:27.680There's one other theory though that that caught my eye.
00:05:27.839 -->
00:05:28.879It's a little dark.
00:05:29.040 -->
00:05:48.480But in the 1800s, whores, also known as prostitutes, sometimes wore beaver fur wigs, affectionately known as Merkins, to mimic pubic hair because they would shave their actual pubes to avoid lice, uh, and then they would put the beaver fur wigs on to reinforce the association.
00:05:48.639 -->
00:05:54.240Obviously, in the 1800s, men enjoyed pubic hair when they were boning.
00:05:54.399 -->
00:05:58.800Oh, how the times have changed, although I I kind of hope it's coming back.
00:05:59.040 -->
00:06:06.879Kind of a weird, weird world I grew up in, um, where everyone was trying to look like you know, this the surface of the moon.
00:06:07.199 -->
00:06:10.319But oh, the beaver moon.
00:06:10.399 -->
00:06:11.759I just took another look at it.
00:06:11.839 -->
00:06:13.279It's so bright right now.
00:06:13.439 -->
00:06:18.800I mean, it's a day late, but it still has that glistening beaver quality.
00:06:19.519 -->
00:06:24.000All right, so that's really that's really it.
00:06:24.079 -->
00:06:30.959It it it it it was very simple mimicking of the pubic care, is really how the beaver came about.
00:06:31.040 -->
00:06:42.079But I think the euphemism in the 60s and 70s, that's where it became a hugely popular, you know, comedians counterculture, where it would talk about the beaver.
00:06:42.240 -->
00:06:51.839And then so if I'm born in 78, by the time I'm coming online and loving beaver talk, I'm 11 years old, 10 years old, we're talking 88.
00:06:52.160 -->
00:06:57.199So I'm picking up, I'm I'm downwind of that 60s and 70s beaver energy.
00:06:57.439 -->
00:07:02.639And so my love for it, which obviously I don't know what kids have it now, my son loves it.
00:07:02.720 -->
00:07:16.720I mean, we watched Naked Gun, and he really likes that joke as well, which is one of those small things in parenting that just makes your warms the cockles of your heart when your son laughs at the same shit you laughed at when you were when he was your age.
00:07:16.959 -->
00:07:18.720When you were his age, rather.
00:07:18.959 -->
00:07:20.879So anyway, um, there's that.
00:07:21.040 -->
00:07:29.680Now, what does this euphemism for female genitalia have to do with the actual beaver moon?
00:07:30.079 -->
00:07:32.720The answer might surprise you.
00:07:32.959 -->
00:07:35.759But first, a few words from our sponsor.

00:08:20.079 -->
00:08:27.600So what does the beaver slang for Vegan have to do with the beaver moon?
00:08:27.839 -->
00:08:31.120The answer is absolutely nothing.
00:08:32.320 -->
00:08:37.200Of course, the beaver moon has nothing to do with female genitalia.
00:08:37.679 -->
00:08:51.519The beaver moon was named aptly because this is the season in which beavers build their dams, prepare for winter, gather their sticks, slap that tail all over that shit, and pack that mud down.
00:08:52.639 -->
00:09:07.840For the humans, we can think of beaver moon as that sort of prepping for winter, you know, gathering your resources, hunkering down, planning to survive the cold, wind, and snow.
00:09:09.919 -->
00:09:11.840Stare at that beaver moon.
00:09:12.000 -->
00:09:16.879Stare stare directly into the beaver moon.
00:09:18.000 -->
00:09:20.720Stare so deeply into the beaver.
00:09:22.399 -->
00:09:30.639Bury, bury your focus, bury your concentration, bury your eyesight.
00:09:31.440 -->
00:09:40.080Laser in on the beaver moon and let it guide you.
00:09:40.240 -->
00:09:56.320Let it wash, let the beaver moon wash over your face and body, bathe in the beaver moon, and let it talk to you.
00:09:56.480 -->
00:10:00.240Let the beaver let the beaver moon talk to you.
00:10:00.399 -->
00:10:04.000Let it let the beaver moon whisper.
00:10:04.480 -->
00:10:14.720What do you need to do to keep your family, your children, your job, all your things, your life?
00:10:14.960 -->
00:10:19.679What do you need to do to survive the winter?
00:10:21.840 -->
00:10:24.799Do you need to renew your license at the DMV?
00:10:26.480 -->
00:10:29.840Do you need to cancel a couple cable packages?
00:10:30.720 -->
00:10:32.960To keep the budget tight?
00:10:35.279 -->
00:10:38.480Do you need to get new hockey skates?
00:10:40.799 -->
00:10:49.840These are the things that are gonna help you survive, and you're getting it from the wisdom of the beaver moon.
00:10:50.320 -->
00:10:52.159Okay, folks, we've had our fun.
00:10:52.240 -->
00:10:54.159It's time for me to hit the rack.
00:10:54.480 -->
00:11:13.039But uh on a more I like to always end on a sort of down, somber, sincere note, so that everybody can kind of feel like a weight on them for the rest of the day, you know, just sort of like like you're wearing a rucksack, like a 50-pound rucksack of melancholy.
00:11:13.200 -->
00:11:13.840No, not really.
00:11:14.000 -->
00:11:16.960I just I want to be very sincere here.
00:11:17.360 -->
00:11:35.360When I announced that the I was basically ending the podcast as we know it, a number of you reached out to either get extremely angry at me, uh, to tell me that I was being selfish and a fool.
00:11:35.600 -->
00:11:41.519Some of you also admitted that that there was some emotion, uh, maybe even a tear.
00:11:41.759 -->
00:11:52.399If you did get a little bit of the feels from that 50-second episode, that actually gave me quite a bit of fuel to keep going.
00:11:52.559 -->
00:12:12.960I think if I really think about why I am on Earth or what and what drew me to acting and what drew me to performing, uh, it was this feeling that there was a way in which to make people feel emotions that they wouldn't necessarily feel in life, like a safe way to feel some sort of sadness.
00:12:13.120 -->
00:12:24.480You know, just like the typical thing when you're when you're in it watching an incredible movie or an amazing play, and you're just you're just getting torn to shreds by the story.
00:12:24.639 -->
00:12:35.679And to be a part of that, to to actually affect uh another human being's emotional state in kind of a uh a cool way that they they remember.
00:12:36.000 -->
00:12:36.960I love that.
00:12:37.200 -->
00:12:42.399And uh I'm not sure how this podcast is actually doing it.
00:12:42.639 -->
00:12:47.279Um but I'll keep searching for ways in which to to actually do that.
00:12:47.440 -->
00:12:49.360I mean, of course, laughter is one of them.
00:12:49.519 -->
00:12:51.120It's an emotion, you know.
00:12:51.360 -->
00:12:58.480But uh I like the other ones too, and I'm trying to figure out ways to like just to just to keep doing it.
00:12:58.639 -->
00:13:03.440I don't know if this is it, but I'm gonna keep searching, and this won't be the last you hear from me.
00:13:03.519 -->
00:13:04.639Uh that's for sure.
00:13:07.440 -->
00:13:10.080Anyway, I just wanted to thank you truly.
00:13:10.159 -->
00:13:12.799Uh the loyal listeners, you know who you are.
00:13:12.960 -->
00:13:14.799I really, really appreciate it.
00:13:14.960 -->
00:13:20.000And uh uh this one was for you, and any future ones are for you.
00:13:20.320 -->
00:13:21.200So thank you.
00:13:21.360 -->
00:13:22.639Thank you for listening.
00:13:22.879 -->
00:13:28.799Uh I hope you think of me every single November as you bathe in Beaver.
