Should every student in marching band be guaranteed a drill spot, solo, leadership role, or performance opportunity? As debates over marching band alternates, fairness, and inclusion get louder, parents and educators need to separate belonging from entitlement... and disappointment from wrongdoing.
This emergency episode tackles parent advocacy, competitive marching band, drill design, auditions, student leadership, alternates, and the growing instinct to treat every uncomfortable outcome as an injustice. Our kids absolutely deserve programs where they belong, but sometimes the most important lesson we can give them is learning how to hear “no,” experience disappointment, grow, come back tomorrow, and still know they matter.
Marching band parents, directors, staff, boosters, and educators: before we rush in to fix every difficult experience, maybe we need to ask what that experience is teaching them, and what our reaction is teaching them too.
