Summary
In this episode of Ruthless Compassion, attorney‑turned‑peacemaker Doug Noel discusses the surprisingly simple yet powerful skill of “naming emotions.” Drawing from a pivotal mediation with hostile ex‑spouses, he explains how directly stating what someone is feeling—“you’re angry,” “you feel frustrated”—calms the brain by activating the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and soothing the amygdala. He backs the technique with UCLA brain‑imaging research and shares stories from prison‑peace projects, showing how the practice reduces violence and restores humanity. Noel also discusses how early emotional validation shapes lifelong health and cognition, challenges the myth of pure rationality, and offers a concrete call‑to‑action: replace defensive reactions with a brief “you feel …” label.
