Packers Total Access: 🏈 Latest Packers News! HUGE Aaron Banks Update! Is Cooper PERFECT For Gannon's Defense?
The most alarming and consequential pre-game injury news of the entire 2026 season just dropped tonight — and the Aaron Banks ruling is the single biggest surprise of the entire Week 3 build-up heading into tomorrow's Thursday Night Football showdown with the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field! Matt LaFleur said just YESTERDAY that Banks would be a game-time decision — and then tonight, without warning, the Packers officially ruled him out for Thursday, adding a new knee injury to the toe injury he sustained in the second quarter against the Jets. The final Week 3 injury report is now confirmed: Jayden Reed out (neck), Zach Bako-Bewele out (season — torn patellar tendon), Aaron Banks out (knee/toe), Warren Brinson out (calf) — with Javon Hargrave questionable and Anthony Campbell questionable. The Green Bay Packers will play their Lambeau Field home opener against the Atlanta Falcons without two starting offensive linemen — with Jager Burton sliding into the left guard role he finished the Jets game in and Anthony Belton holding down right tackle in place of the season-ending Bako-Bewele. But the most encouraging storyline emerging from all the chaos is one that the national media simply cannot quantify yet — Edgerrin Cooper is not just good in Jonathan Gannon's defense. He might be the most perfect individual fit in the entire scheme. And tomorrow night at Lambeau Field against Michael Penix Jr.'s season debut, the world is about to find out why.
In this complete huge Aaron Banks update and full Cooper-Gannon perfect fit breakdown, we dive into:
- The Aaron Banks Ruling — Why It's More Alarming Than It Appears: The big surprise is that Banks was already ruled out tonight, as LaFleur said just yesterday he would give the offensive lineman until 90 minutes before kickoff to make a ruling on his status — and the fact that the coaching staff moved that deadline up by nearly 24 hours tells the complete story of how the knee and toe combination is responding to the short week. Banks has now missed Week 1 with a knee, played half of Week 2 before leaving with a new toe injury, and is now out for Week 3 — making the four-year, $77 million free agent one of the most expensive and least available offensive linemen in the entire NFC North through the first three weeks of the 2026 season. The encouraging news: with the extra rest following Thursday's game, it seems encouraging that Banks could return in Week 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- The Offensive Line Tomorrow Night — What Jager Burton Must Deliver: Jager Burton is set to start at left guard for the second consecutive game — with guard Donovan Jennings healthy from his Week 2 hand injury and tackle Anthony Belton healthy from his Week 2 elbow issue, both playing without injury designations. Burton finished the Jets game at left guard after Banks and Jennings both went down — and the rookie fifth-round pick who stole a starting job in training camp is now the most important offensive lineman on the entire Green Bay Packers depth chart. Adam Stenavich said of Burton during training camp that "I like his playstyle" and "he's got the right mindset for offensive line play" — and tomorrow night at Lambeau Field is the biggest individual stage of Burton's entire professional career.
- Is Edgerrin Cooper PERFECT For Gannon's Defense? — The Complete Film Case: Cooper is not just a fit in Gannon's system — he is the most perfect individual match between a player and a scheme in the entire NFC North. Gannon has actually played Cooper on the edge in the Penny package, displacing the edge defender opposite Lukas Van Ness — making Cooper one of the most genuinely versatile defensive chess pieces in professional football. His coverage skills posted a 76.5 coverage grade via PFF last season, allowing just a 94.1 passer rating when targeted — elite numbers for a linebacker — while his blitzing ability generated 23 pressures including four sacks across his first two seasons. Brian Gutekunst put it perfectly: "He is so versatile with his ability to play off the ball in the run game, to cover, to rush the passer. He's really a complete linebacker." And Zaire Franklin's reaction to seeing Cooper practice for the first time was the most genuine and revealing endorsement of the entire offseason: "I ain't realize he was that big. He's kind of tall. I thought he was just fast."
- The Penny Package That Makes Cooper Irreplaceable: One of the biggest changes in Gannon's scheme is the Penny package — essentially a 3-4 defense on the line of scrimmage with one true off-ball linebacker, split safeties, and another deeper safety in the middle of the field. The Packers don't play a slot defender in their Penny package — they play a third safety — and instead of taking their Will linebacker off the field, Gannon keeps Cooper on the field AND moves him to the edge. That deployment against Michael Penix Jr. tomorrow night gives the Falcons a look they have never seen — Cooper rushing from the edge with the athleticism of a pass rusher and the coverage ability of a safety, while the rest of Gannon's disguised shell coverages force Penix into exactly the kind of pre-snap confusion that has defined the Packers' defensive identity through two games.
- Michael Penix Jr.'s Season Debut — What Gannon's Defense Must Do: The Falcons ruled out just one player for Thursday — defensive end Samson Ebukam — with cornerback Billy Bowman questionable. The big news coming out of Atlanta is that Penix Jr. will make his season debut after Kirk Cousins threw just 12 passes in the 34-3 blowout loss to Carolina in Week 2 — making Thursday's game the most important individual debut of any starting quarterback in the entire NFC this week. Penix went 16-of-24 for 289 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason against Green Bay — with no picks — and Gannon's ability to confuse a second-year quarterback who has seen this defense before with his most exotic pre-snap disguises is the single most important defensive chess match of the entire Thursday Night Football slate. Cooper's blitzing. Van Ness's edge. Cisse's coverage. Gannon's scheme. Lambeau Field. Tomorrow night. Go Pack Go!
