Speaker 1: Seven minutes to two o'clock. And in our finance feature for today, we'll talk about understanding your investment options. So shares, bonds, property, or cash. We're joined by Lloyd Boutelle, the founder and director of titanium investment group, group and wealth management. Lloyd, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for joining us.
00:00:26
Speaker 2: Thank you very much, uh, Good afternoon to you, really, and the listeners.
00:00:31
Speaker 1: Lloyd, I would assume somebody that works in finance, you should be able to raise half a million rand by tomorrow if I called you.
00:00:40
Speaker 2: We can make a plan.
00:00:42
Speaker 1: I knew.
00:00:44
Speaker 2: It. I knew it.
00:00:48
Speaker 1: So please share with us, I want to start with property in terms of investment options. Is it something that is still seen as an investment and under what circumstances is property an investment?
00:01:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. I mean, if you look at most South Africans specifically, most of our investments sit in property assets. You can have physical property as an investment where you own a number of units and you collect rent out of those. But also you could go into property investments in different platforms where you can buy listed property through certain platforms. And you can also buy real estate investment trusts, which also give you the same benefit in that you get income, but also you get some capital growth.
00:01:44
Speaker 1: When we talk cash, I'm assuming we're not referring to mattresses or couches.
00:01:51
Speaker 2: No, definitely. I mean, putting money under the mattress is definitely not the way to go. It will not only be eaten up by rats, but it will also be eaten up by inflation. So when you talk cash, we're talking about cash assets where you can actually have your money exposed to money market type of instruments. And even like... bank type instruments where you'll get like fixed deposits etc so those those is that that's what we regard as as cash type investments.
00:02:24
Speaker 1: When we speak about shares um and and please make it as obvious as possible what we mean when we say.
00:02:31
Speaker 2: Shares yeah when when we say shares so um We normally talk about, let's say, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, because we're talking to South Africans today. We're not going to talk about the FTSE and the NASDAQ. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange has a number of companies that are listed where individuals as well as entities can actually participate in buying the stocks. And what that does is the success of that particular stock or the growth of that particular stock results in also the growth of those who have invested in the same. So we have companies that are listed in Johannesburg but who operate across the continent. You could list companies like ShopRite, MTN, et cetera, et cetera. When they do well and their share price appreciates those who have actually picked those stocks, they also benefit in growing their wealth in that manner.
00:03:37
Speaker 1: And then the final one being bonds. Which ones are the bonds?
00:03:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, when it comes to bonds, I mean, the simplest way to explain bonds is you have a government who maybe wants to build a road and they are raising money and they come to us, the South Africans, and you say, here's my 100,000 and they give you an IOU. which means they owe you some money. They'll give you interest either on a quarterly basis or on a monthly basis. And after a certain period, then they will actually give you back your money. So it can either be government, those are government bonds, but it can also be corporate when they're raising funding. Like you said to me, what if you wanted half a million tomorrow? Yes. I could sign your bond and say, all right, you owe me 500,000 and you could pay me 5% every month or whatever the case may be. Let's say that runs for a year. And after a year, you're going to give me back the 500,000, that kind of thing. But it's done from government to corporate entities, et cetera. Those are bonds. And they're like kind of reliable investments.
00:04:59
Speaker 1: Yes. So how should people get in touch with you if they would like some guidance? Because obviously there are pros and cons with all these different options. How do they book a consult?
00:05:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, so our company is called Titanium Wealth Management. So it's titaniumwm.co.za. They can book an appointment with us. And what we'll do is we'll actually look at the individual needs of the particular person because we are all not the same. And we'll craft whatever solution that is relevant to their needs. their family and the legacy that they want to live and everything that they've ever dreamed of. That's what we actually help them put their money in the right pocket so that they achieve their life goals.
00:05:55
