Our discussion promises to bridge generations, revealing how the march not only shaped local history but continues to inspire current and future activists. Together, we dissect the event's monumental influence on the struggle for equality, celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson while spotlighting the role Franklin County Schools play in keeping the spirit of unity alive. As we gear up for the upcoming re-creation of the march, slated for March 5th, 2024, we uncover the intricate planning involved in bringing diverse communities together to honor this beacon of progress in race relations.
Amidst the echoes of the past, we pivot to the present-day significance of youth engagement in social justice, emphasizing the crucial part they play in shaping a just future. Our conversation with our esteemed guests underscores the importance of fostering dialogue—beyond political lines—to cultivate a society that champions equality for all. And as we wind down, we don't miss the chance to connect on a more personal level, exchanging our favorite movie picks that allow for a moment of levity amidst our profound discourse. This episode is an invitation to witness the tapestry of change that is woven when education, community, and history converge.

00:00:17.708 --> 00:00:19.725
Welcome to FCS Unscripted.
00:00:19.725 --> 00:00:21.065
This is Superintendent Mark Kopp.
00:00:21.065 --> 00:00:23.065
I am so thrilled to be with you today.
00:00:23.065 --> 00:00:26.646
We have a really special podcast today.
00:00:26.646 --> 00:00:38.511
We are getting ready to have an epic event in our community and that is the recreation of the original March on Frankfurt on March 5th 1964.
00:00:38.511 --> 00:00:42.951
An amazing event took place in our history, in our local history.
00:00:42.951 --> 00:00:53.588
We had some really significant people that took part in this event, including Dr Martin Luther King, jackie Robinson and others that we'll talk about during the podcast today.
00:00:53.588 --> 00:01:00.369
I am so thrilled to be joined with three guests today.
00:01:00.369 --> 00:01:03.713
First of all, we have Katima Smith-Willis, who is with us.
00:01:03.713 --> 00:01:06.064
Hey, everybody, thank you for joining us.
00:01:06.064 --> 00:01:08.045
We have Kristi Poe with us.
00:01:08.325 --> 00:01:08.908
Hello.
00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:12.206
And we have Larry Murphy, our Director of Human Resources.
00:01:12.468 --> 00:01:13.230
Hello everyone.
00:01:13.861 --> 00:01:15.564
Larry Murphy, for the district is our.
00:01:15.564 --> 00:01:25.587
He coordinates our diversity, equity and inclusion and all of the associated programs that we are working on as a district.
00:01:25.587 --> 00:01:29.137
Kristi is Really.
00:01:29.137 --> 00:01:36.685
She represents the focus on race relations Correct, and we're going to start by talking to Katima, though.
00:01:36.685 --> 00:01:42.259
So, katima, you want to talk about why you're here and why you're excited about what's getting ready to take place?
00:01:42.459 --> 00:01:52.875
Yeah Well, I mean, I'm super excited because I hail from the county school district, so it's really nice to be able to give back to my home and where I grew up, especially Franklin County High School.
00:01:52.875 --> 00:01:53.977
Shout out to the Flyers.
00:01:54.680 --> 00:01:57.058
So, yeah, cacaw, cacaw.
00:01:58.295 --> 00:01:59.359
Yeah, I'm super excited.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:02.784
I'm here because, I mean, I'm 27.
00:02:02.784 --> 00:02:05.283
1964 wasn't too long ago.
00:02:05.283 --> 00:02:15.223
My mom was born four years after the march on Frankfurt and I have some really amazing people in my family that attended the march on Frankfurt in 1964.
00:02:15.223 --> 00:02:28.903
But I'm here because I really like to make sure that I reach out to the students and make sure that they understand how big of an impact this march was and how huge of an impact it will be to have them a part of this monumental day.
00:02:28.903 --> 00:02:38.162
I have a two-year-old son and I'm excited for him to attend school in the future, hopefully in the county school district, but for him to be a part of this day too.
00:02:38.162 --> 00:02:50.606
I think it'll be really cool and full circle for my life and my purpose being a part of this march, but then also just the significance behind the historical pivotal moment that this had.
00:02:50.606 --> 00:02:53.604
So I'm really excited to be here and to be able to talk about this.
00:02:53.754 --> 00:03:06.639
Well, we are thrilled to have you here and to be part of this and we're really excited as a school district to get to collaborate and be part of this and we're going to talk about some of the school district initiatives and some of the things that we're going to be doing as part of the march.
00:03:06.639 --> 00:03:10.081
I want to bring in Christie Poe at this time also.
00:03:10.081 --> 00:03:28.443
I've gotten to know Christie over the years and Christie your father, ed Poe was really a special human being and special to me, special to this community, and you are really picking up the baton from him and are so proud of the work that you're doing.
00:03:28.443 --> 00:03:35.200
So kind of talk to us first about yourself, about the focus on race relations and then also the march on Frankfurt.
00:03:35.514 --> 00:03:36.400
No problem at all.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:39.800
Well, I am currently the president of Focus on Race Relations.
00:03:39.800 --> 00:03:43.842
I'm also a Franklin County flyer, class of 1990.
00:03:43.962 --> 00:03:45.506
Hello, Good call yes.
00:03:46.167 --> 00:03:46.949
That's new too.
00:03:46.949 --> 00:03:49.387
I don't we didn't pick up, right it's going to know what that is?
00:03:49.467 --> 00:03:50.913
It's just go flyers, right.
00:03:51.355 --> 00:03:52.841
Go flyers, flyers, actually.
00:03:52.841 --> 00:04:01.305
So it's just really exciting to be back here talking about this with you all wearing my Franklin County school shirt.
00:04:01.305 --> 00:04:04.260
I love it, but focus on race relations.
00:04:04.260 --> 00:04:06.120
So what we do?
00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:21.019
We are simply a group of concerned community citizens a very diverse group, and we've all decided that it's very important to have open and honest, face-to-face conversations about race and race-related issues here in Frankfurt and Franklin County.
00:04:21.019 --> 00:04:22.761
That's all we strive to do.
00:04:22.761 --> 00:04:30.581
We make sure that we engage people in those conversations and we understand that Frankfurt and Franklin County is ready for those conversations.
00:04:30.581 --> 00:04:38.021
One of the things that we've always found is there is safety and silence, and most of the time people are so quiet they're scared to say something.
00:04:38.021 --> 00:04:42.524
They feel like they may say the wrong thing or they may offend you or is this racist?
00:04:42.574 --> 00:04:43.459
Is this not racist?
00:04:43.459 --> 00:04:45.701
No bad questions.
00:04:45.701 --> 00:04:50.403
As long as that conversation is opened, we can all find some common ground.
00:04:50.403 --> 00:04:59.708
So that's one of the reasons I'm so excited about this march, because this is community coming together and excited about it.
00:04:59.708 --> 00:05:02.603
We're all excited to be a part of this.
00:05:02.603 --> 00:05:04.047
It saddened me.
00:05:04.047 --> 00:05:21.841
I did get a call from a Native American group of Indigenous people out of Indy I think it was Indianapolis and they had been told that they weren't welcome, that this was only a march for blacks and whites, and I said not at all.
00:05:22.375 --> 00:05:28.684
The whole purpose of this was equality, this was freedom, this was unity for everyone, for all people.
00:05:28.684 --> 00:05:31.564
So it's going to be an exciting group.
00:05:31.564 --> 00:05:44.562
We've got people from all backgrounds, all ages, all races and religions, and we're just going to just march together, listen to each other and get caught up in where we are now, while we also look back to where we were.
00:05:44.661 --> 00:05:45.043
I love it.
00:05:45.043 --> 00:05:45.504
I love it.
00:05:46.216 --> 00:05:48.202
There is no community without unity.
00:05:48.904 --> 00:05:49.485
I love that.
00:05:49.576 --> 00:05:50.747
My husband, jordan, taught me that.
00:05:50.827 --> 00:05:51.514
So I love it.
00:05:51.576 --> 00:05:58.607
I think about it all the time, because when we have conversations like this, it's not just about black or white, people of color, indigenous.
00:05:58.607 --> 00:06:05.394
It's about us all collectively coming together as almost some sort of cohort to move forward with change and progress.
00:06:05.494 --> 00:06:06.416
So I love that.
00:06:06.416 --> 00:06:10.245
And so let's kind of talk about some of the logistics behind the day.
00:06:10.245 --> 00:06:14.442
It's going to be on Tuesday, march the 5th 2024.
00:06:14.442 --> 00:06:21.918
The march itself will begin at 1045, I believe, and that is we're all.
00:06:21.918 --> 00:06:34.934
Everyone's going to assemble, I think, by the Capital City Museum, if I'm not mistaken, right there, and the march begins there, and then we're going to cross over the bridge and march to the capital from there.
00:06:35.100 --> 00:06:37.507
Now there's also a reception, just to add.
00:06:37.507 --> 00:06:44.367
So the city of Frankfurt is hosting a reception from 9 to 11 at the Capital City Museum, so there will be light refreshments.
00:06:44.367 --> 00:06:51.735
We've also got an impersonator, someone that does King impersonations of his speeches through the past.
00:06:51.735 --> 00:06:53.281
He'll be at the museum as well.
00:06:53.281 --> 00:06:54.367
So there'll be things to do.
00:06:54.367 --> 00:07:01.079
There's a poster station that's set up for anyone that wants to make their poster, so there are things to do in the museum starting at 9.
00:07:01.220 --> 00:07:04.769
Great, great From our perspective as a school district.
00:07:04.769 --> 00:07:09.247
Just so you all know, Franklin County School is supporting this.
00:07:09.247 --> 00:07:16.670
We've got kids who've been making posters now for the last week or so and they will continue to do so.
00:07:16.670 --> 00:07:18.192
So we're going to have a lot of posters.
00:07:18.192 --> 00:07:24.774
We are busing students down to the Capital City Museum to take part in the march.
00:07:24.774 --> 00:07:30.031
I know that our friends at Frankfurt Independent are doing the same thing, so we're really excited.
00:07:30.031 --> 00:07:33.934
We're going to have representatives from every one of our schools.
00:07:33.934 --> 00:07:36.423
Some schools are going to have a few more than others.
00:07:36.423 --> 00:07:52.954
It's hard to get all 15 schools to do the exact same thing, you know so, but we're going to have a very large contingent of students who are going to get to participate in this event and really recreate history, and so we're really excited about that.
00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:55.607
Let me bring in Mr Murphy just very briefly.
00:07:55.607 --> 00:07:59.466
Is there anything that you would like to add from the district's perspective?
00:07:59.466 --> 00:08:07.651
Talking about, you know, with our efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion and what you know, what makes us so excited about participating in this?
00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:34.315
Yeah, I think that, just as Kateema, I think, mentioned the students listening to the students' excitement and voice we can learn a lot just from our students and I think giving them an opportunity to share what their visions are for just creating a better community, a better state, a better country really is empowering to us and motivating us.
00:08:34.315 --> 00:08:40.008
So I always love the opportunity to listen and to learn from our students.
00:08:40.008 --> 00:08:46.410
I think they have a lot that they show and teach us on a daily basis, so the students are excited about participating.
00:08:46.851 --> 00:08:57.993
I've been getting pictures and their posters that they're making in schools and lots of questions that they have about just you know, what can I do to participate in that energy is.
00:08:57.993 --> 00:09:03.533
I love that energy, so looking forward to seeing all of our students there on March the 5th.
00:09:03.674 --> 00:09:19.566
Yeah, it's going to be a very exciting event, and it's one of those things where I love seeing when the community can come together and do something together that promotes more of what we need in this world equality, goodness, kindness, belonging All those things are incredibly important.
00:09:19.566 --> 00:09:34.316
So, going back to you, christy, in terms of the group, the focus on race relations and getting involved in this, what do you all see as one of the most beneficial outcomes of what this march is going to do for our community?
00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:38.113
It opens up the conversation, and that is what we stand for.
00:09:38.113 --> 00:09:40.301
People are going to be talking about this.
00:09:40.301 --> 00:09:42.611
People are going to be asking why are we marching?
00:09:42.611 --> 00:09:43.677
What are we marching for?
00:09:43.677 --> 00:09:46.326
What was the reason for the march in 64?
00:09:46.326 --> 00:09:51.402
So, all of these conversations, especially with our youth, that's what's important.
00:09:51.402 --> 00:09:59.250
They, just, like Larry and Katina said, they're taking an interest, they're excited and they're the ones that are going to make these changes.
00:09:59.250 --> 00:10:08.432
Okay, we have tried, we will continue to try, but it is the youth that is actually standing up and saying we do not like what's been happening.
00:10:08.432 --> 00:10:10.363
We will not allow it to continue.
00:10:10.363 --> 00:10:12.144
This is what we're going to do.
00:10:12.144 --> 00:10:14.269
They are the change that we want to see.
00:10:14.269 --> 00:10:16.615
Focus on race relations.
00:10:16.615 --> 00:10:22.038
That is what we're focusing on All of us coming together and just having that conversation.
00:10:22.840 --> 00:10:23.923
Yeah, what do you think, katima?
00:10:24.370 --> 00:10:27.677
I mean, I guess, coming from um.
00:10:27.677 --> 00:10:29.442
I graduated class of 2014.
00:10:29.442 --> 00:10:32.339
So I we were having our 10 year reunion this year, which is crazy.
00:10:32.359 --> 00:10:40.279
To me it's very crazy, but, coming from, coming from where I grew up and um, just throughout school, I know I learned a lot through the school.
00:10:40.279 --> 00:10:47.158
Through school, but I think once I hit 18, um, I didn't quite fully understand everything that was going on.
00:10:47.158 --> 00:10:51.120
I had to kind of do a little self-searching and um diving into that.
00:10:51.120 --> 00:11:06.101
But I've I learned at a very young age that in 25 years, my voice is going to be the one that needs to be heard and if I don't have, if I'm not educated about what's going on, and if I'm not making a making a direct action call on what needs to happen, I will have no impact.
00:11:06.101 --> 00:11:09.759
So I think representation matters right now, especially with the youth.
00:11:09.909 --> 00:11:17.020
I know that you know, if we we encourage them to vote when they turn 18, but some might, some might think you know, what can I do until I turn 18?
00:11:17.020 --> 00:11:21.381
But you, using your voice, you showing up to this March, you are making an impact.
00:11:21.381 --> 00:11:31.577
You are, you are clearly making a message to um anybody out there, because we still need change today and um, it's always going to be an uphill battle, but your voice matters, no matter what age you are.
00:11:31.577 --> 00:11:33.570
Um, I think elementary school kids are coming.
00:11:33.570 --> 00:11:36.450
Peaks like that is a huge representation matters.
00:11:36.529 --> 00:11:53.934
The youth are our future and if we're not giving them a platform now, they'll they'll probably feel like they never have a seat at the table, so right and and something that we talk about a lot uh in in education, uh, specifically in our district I think in many other districts as well it's this idea that we educate the whole child.
00:11:54.195 --> 00:12:01.721
You know, it's not just about teaching reading skills or math skills or, you know, playing a sport.
00:12:01.721 --> 00:12:15.738
It's it's all of those things and uh, being able to experience an event like this that's going to promote the ideas and ideals of equity and inclusion and belonging those things are really important.
00:12:15.738 --> 00:12:25.441
Um, and and unfortunately, sometimes in our world today, everything gets politicized, and this is not, this should not be political.
00:12:25.441 --> 00:12:26.049
It's.
00:12:26.049 --> 00:12:34.005
It's kind of the same thing that we run into in terms of when we talk about promoting this idea of funding public education effectively.
00:12:34.005 --> 00:12:37.379
That should have never become a political issue.
00:12:37.379 --> 00:12:47.672
The same way that treating each other with respect, dignity and and making sure that you're promoting equality that that's not something that should ever become.
00:12:47.672 --> 00:12:50.038
This party believes this and this party believes this.
00:12:50.038 --> 00:12:51.322
We're Americans.
00:12:51.322 --> 00:12:57.499
That's what our country was founded on this idea that everyone is created equal and we're we deserve to be treated that way.
00:12:57.971 --> 00:13:13.470
I'm glad you even mentioned that, because focus on race relations is not a political organization, and so I'm proud to be hosting this and sponsoring this because that's to let people know this isn't one way or another, this isn't a party fight, this is not political in any way.
00:13:13.470 --> 00:13:17.288
Just like you said, this is just people coming together for equality, right.
00:13:17.288 --> 00:13:20.825
You know, people coming together for justice, for freedoms.
00:13:20.825 --> 00:13:23.509
You know just your basic human rights.
00:13:23.509 --> 00:13:25.149
So we're excited to be.
00:13:26.134 --> 00:13:27.679
And anyone want to add anything else.
00:13:28.458 --> 00:13:29.269
I think I mean I think we covered it.
00:13:29.269 --> 00:13:42.009
I mean I think we're talking about humanity right now and kind of just equality across the board, and I really I'm I'm really happy to be, to be deep behind the scenes on this, because I have a huge sore spot in my heart for the kids.
00:13:42.009 --> 00:13:44.494
I really, I really love to bring them to the table.
00:13:44.494 --> 00:13:45.807
So I'm excited, I love it.
00:13:46.592 --> 00:13:54.229
Well, something that you all may not know is on this on the show, after we talk about the main topics of the day, we do something a little fun.
00:13:54.229 --> 00:13:57.178
We talk about some fun facts.
00:13:58.221 --> 00:13:58.722
I love it.
00:13:58.722 --> 00:13:59.546
Fun facts.
00:13:59.546 --> 00:14:00.708
It's time, all right.
00:14:01.731 --> 00:14:03.195
And, and, and these are going to be.
00:14:03.195 --> 00:14:04.979
And, Larry, you got to participate in this too.
00:14:04.999 --> 00:14:05.900
I'm ready, are you ready?
00:14:05.900 --> 00:14:07.182
All right, fun facts, oh yeah.
00:14:08.732 --> 00:14:12.470
Question number one what is your favorite movie of all time?
00:14:12.470 --> 00:14:14.950
We'll start with Larry Murphy, because he says he's ready.
00:14:14.950 --> 00:14:16.929
My favorite movie?
00:14:17.495 --> 00:14:18.629
I didn't even have to think about it.
00:14:19.534 --> 00:14:20.903
I didn't even have to think about it, I'm ready.
00:14:21.586 --> 00:14:23.461
All right, Katerina, you go.
00:14:23.461 --> 00:14:24.126
I need more time.
00:14:24.750 --> 00:14:27.081
My favorite movie of all times is the Goonies.
00:14:27.461 --> 00:14:28.547
Goonies Great.
00:14:28.726 --> 00:14:29.330
All time favorite movie.
00:14:29.610 --> 00:14:32.081
That's actually been mentioned before by a previous guest.
00:14:32.081 --> 00:14:33.807
So, okay, all right, harry.
00:14:33.868 --> 00:14:34.250
Potter.
00:14:34.613 --> 00:14:35.442
Oh, that's a good one.
00:14:35.442 --> 00:14:36.591
The original right the.
00:14:36.591 --> 00:14:38.195
Half-blood Prince is my favorite.
00:14:38.195 --> 00:14:39.359
Oh, that's a good one.
00:14:39.379 --> 00:14:42.230
Okay, all right, cool, larry, you're on the hot seat, man, let's go.
00:14:43.777 --> 00:14:46.368
I would probably say what's love got to do with it?
00:14:46.368 --> 00:14:46.427
Oh?
00:14:46.447 --> 00:14:46.809
that's a good one.
00:14:47.071 --> 00:14:50.961
Start at my my admiration for Tina Turner.
00:14:51.121 --> 00:14:55.413
Awesome, Very good, very good, all right, so Only have three of these.
00:14:55.413 --> 00:14:59.643
Second question what is your favorite food, katima?
00:15:00.063 --> 00:15:03.332
Oh gosh, favorite food.
00:15:03.332 --> 00:15:05.000
Favorite food had to say pasta.
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:08.614
Yeah, I don't care what kind of pasta it is, give me the noodles Carb loathe.
00:15:08.956 --> 00:15:09.919
Yeah, yeah, love it.
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:12.389
I could kill myself with chocolate chip cookies.
00:15:17.508 --> 00:15:17.528
I.
00:15:18.370 --> 00:15:19.413
Could eat it every day, yep.
00:15:19.754 --> 00:15:24.703
Yep, last question, and we're gonna start with Christy on this one last question, here we go.
00:15:24.703 --> 00:15:29.020
What is your favorite musical group or musical performer?
00:15:31.110 --> 00:15:32.134
Michael Jackson.
00:15:32.134 --> 00:15:33.662
I've been to three of his concerts.
00:15:33.662 --> 00:15:38.009
I find it, every single one of them, I love him, and I'll love him till the just till I die.
00:15:38.009 --> 00:15:40.657
I'm a super fan.
00:15:41.197 --> 00:15:45.769
I saw the Michael Jackson show in the Cirque de Soleil show in.
00:15:45.828 --> 00:15:46.029
Vegas.
00:15:46.029 --> 00:15:47.033
Oh, it's the best I've seen.
00:15:47.033 --> 00:15:53.639
That twice unbelievable when they did the hologram of him yeah, yeah crazy, crazy.
00:15:53.820 --> 00:15:57.716
All right, larry Murphy, I said mine Tina Turner and, yep, I got you beat.
00:15:57.716 --> 00:15:59.461
I've seen her eight times in a concert.
00:15:59.461 --> 00:16:07.653
Four times front row oh wow, wow, all right.
00:16:08.650 --> 00:16:12.221
Man, man, man, this one's hard for me because I'm a music junkie.
00:16:12.221 --> 00:16:15.239
Uk artist, I would say Brent Fias.
00:16:15.239 --> 00:16:18.392
So for all my kids out there that know, brent Fias, you're a cool kid.
00:16:18.392 --> 00:16:21.298
And then if I had to choose a group, it would be the temptations.
00:16:21.418 --> 00:16:22.982
Okay, temptations are solid.
00:16:22.982 --> 00:16:25.216
Listen, I really appreciate you all.
00:16:25.216 --> 00:16:28.759
Katima, christy, larry, thank you for being part of this.
00:16:28.759 --> 00:16:30.004
Thank you for promoting this.
00:16:30.004 --> 00:16:31.570
This is a wonderful event.
00:16:31.570 --> 00:16:40.182
We can't wait to collaborate with you and Until next time, I hope everyone has a wonderful day and we appreciate you listening.
00:16:40.322 --> 00:16:41.403
Thank you, thank you.

00:17:05.395 --> 00:17:07.501
I.
00:00:08.189 --> 00:00:10.391
Welcome to FCS Unscripted.
00:00:10.391 --> 00:00:17.708
A new podcast for one team, fcs, where we look at the stories behind every one in Franklin County schools.
00:00:17.708 --> 00:00:19.725
Welcome to FCS Unscripted.
00:00:19.725 --> 00:00:21.065
This is Superintendent Mark Kopp.
00:00:21.065 --> 00:00:23.065
I am so thrilled to be with you today.
00:00:23.065 --> 00:00:26.646
We have a really special podcast today.
00:00:26.646 --> 00:00:38.511
We are getting ready to have an epic event in our community and that is the recreation of the original March on Frankfurt on March 5th 1964.
00:00:38.511 --> 00:00:42.951
An amazing event took place in our history, in our local history.
00:00:42.951 --> 00:00:53.588
We had some really significant people that took part in this event, including Dr Martin Luther King, jackie Robinson and others that we'll talk about during the podcast today.
00:00:53.588 --> 00:01:00.369
I am so thrilled to be joined with three guests today.
00:01:00.369 --> 00:01:03.713
First of all, we have Katima Smith-Willis, who is with us.
00:01:03.713 --> 00:01:06.064
Hey, everybody, thank you for joining us.
00:01:06.064 --> 00:01:08.045
We have Kristi Poe with us.
00:01:08.325 --> 00:01:08.908
Hello.
00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:12.206
And we have Larry Murphy, our Director of Human Resources.
00:01:12.468 --> 00:01:13.230
Hello everyone.
00:01:13.861 --> 00:01:15.564
Larry Murphy, for the district is our.
00:01:15.564 --> 00:01:25.587
He coordinates our diversity, equity and inclusion and all of the associated programs that we are working on as a district.
00:01:25.587 --> 00:01:29.137
Kristi is Really.
00:01:29.137 --> 00:01:36.685
She represents the focus on race relations Correct, and we're going to start by talking to Katima, though.
00:01:36.685 --> 00:01:42.259
So, katima, you want to talk about why you're here and why you're excited about what's getting ready to take place?
00:01:42.459 --> 00:01:52.875
Yeah Well, I mean, I'm super excited because I hail from the county school district, so it's really nice to be able to give back to my home and where I grew up, especially Franklin County High School.
00:01:52.875 --> 00:01:53.977
Shout out to the Flyers.
00:01:54.680 --> 00:01:57.058
So, yeah, cacaw, cacaw.
00:01:58.295 --> 00:01:59.359
Yeah, I'm super excited.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:02.784
I'm here because, I mean, I'm 27.
00:02:02.784 --> 00:02:05.283
1964 wasn't too long ago.
00:02:05.283 --> 00:02:15.223
My mom was born four years after the march on Frankfurt and I have some really amazing people in my family that attended the march on Frankfurt in 1964.
00:02:15.223 --> 00:02:28.903
But I'm here because I really like to make sure that I reach out to the students and make sure that they understand how big of an impact this march was and how huge of an impact it will be to have them a part of this monumental day.
00:02:28.903 --> 00:02:38.162
I have a two-year-old son and I'm excited for him to attend school in the future, hopefully in the county school district, but for him to be a part of this day too.
00:02:38.162 --> 00:02:50.606
I think it'll be really cool and full circle for my life and my purpose being a part of this march, but then also just the significance behind the historical pivotal moment that this had.
00:02:50.606 --> 00:02:53.604
So I'm really excited to be here and to be able to talk about this.
00:02:53.754 --> 00:03:06.639
Well, we are thrilled to have you here and to be part of this and we're really excited as a school district to get to collaborate and be part of this and we're going to talk about some of the school district initiatives and some of the things that we're going to be doing as part of the march.
00:03:06.639 --> 00:03:10.081
I want to bring in Christie Poe at this time also.
00:03:10.081 --> 00:03:28.443
I've gotten to know Christie over the years and Christie your father, ed Poe was really a special human being and special to me, special to this community, and you are really picking up the baton from him and are so proud of the work that you're doing.
00:03:28.443 --> 00:03:35.200
So kind of talk to us first about yourself, about the focus on race relations and then also the march on Frankfurt.
00:03:35.514 --> 00:03:36.400
No problem at all.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:39.800
Well, I am currently the president of Focus on Race Relations.
00:03:39.800 --> 00:03:43.842
I'm also a Franklin County flyer, class of 1990.
00:03:43.962 --> 00:03:45.506
Hello, Good call yes.
00:03:46.167 --> 00:03:46.949
That's new too.
00:03:46.949 --> 00:03:49.387
I don't we didn't pick up, right it's going to know what that is?
00:03:49.467 --> 00:03:50.913
It's just go flyers, right.
00:03:51.355 --> 00:03:52.841
Go flyers, flyers, actually.
00:03:52.841 --> 00:04:01.305
So it's just really exciting to be back here talking about this with you all wearing my Franklin County school shirt.
00:04:01.305 --> 00:04:04.260
I love it, but focus on race relations.
00:04:04.260 --> 00:04:06.120
So what we do?
00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:21.019
We are simply a group of concerned community citizens a very diverse group, and we've all decided that it's very important to have open and honest, face-to-face conversations about race and race-related issues here in Frankfurt and Franklin County.
00:04:21.019 --> 00:04:22.761
That's all we strive to do.
00:04:22.761 --> 00:04:30.581
We make sure that we engage people in those conversations and we understand that Frankfurt and Franklin County is ready for those conversations.
00:04:30.581 --> 00:04:38.021
One of the things that we've always found is there is safety and silence, and most of the time people are so quiet they're scared to say something.
00:04:38.021 --> 00:04:42.524
They feel like they may say the wrong thing or they may offend you or is this racist?
00:04:42.574 --> 00:04:43.459
Is this not racist?
00:04:43.459 --> 00:04:45.701
No bad questions.
00:04:45.701 --> 00:04:50.403
As long as that conversation is opened, we can all find some common ground.
00:04:50.403 --> 00:04:59.708
So that's one of the reasons I'm so excited about this march, because this is community coming together and excited about it.
00:04:59.708 --> 00:05:02.603
We're all excited to be a part of this.
00:05:02.603 --> 00:05:04.047
It saddened me.
00:05:04.047 --> 00:05:21.841
I did get a call from a Native American group of Indigenous people out of Indy I think it was Indianapolis and they had been told that they weren't welcome, that this was only a march for blacks and whites, and I said not at all.
00:05:22.375 --> 00:05:28.684
The whole purpose of this was equality, this was freedom, this was unity for everyone, for all people.
00:05:28.684 --> 00:05:31.564
So it's going to be an exciting group.
00:05:31.564 --> 00:05:44.562
We've got people from all backgrounds, all ages, all races and religions, and we're just going to just march together, listen to each other and get caught up in where we are now, while we also look back to where we were.
00:05:44.661 --> 00:05:45.043
I love it.
00:05:45.043 --> 00:05:45.504
I love it.
00:05:46.216 --> 00:05:48.202
There is no community without unity.
00:05:48.904 --> 00:05:49.485
I love that.
00:05:49.576 --> 00:05:50.747
My husband, jordan, taught me that.
00:05:50.827 --> 00:05:51.514
So I love it.
00:05:51.576 --> 00:05:58.607
I think about it all the time, because when we have conversations like this, it's not just about black or white, people of color, indigenous.
00:05:58.607 --> 00:06:05.394
It's about us all collectively coming together as almost some sort of cohort to move forward with change and progress.
00:06:05.494 --> 00:06:06.416
So I love that.
00:06:06.416 --> 00:06:10.245
And so let's kind of talk about some of the logistics behind the day.
00:06:10.245 --> 00:06:14.442
It's going to be on Tuesday, march the 5th 2024.
00:06:14.442 --> 00:06:21.918
The march itself will begin at 1045, I believe, and that is we're all.
00:06:21.918 --> 00:06:34.934
Everyone's going to assemble, I think, by the Capital City Museum, if I'm not mistaken, right there, and the march begins there, and then we're going to cross over the bridge and march to the capital from there.
00:06:35.100 --> 00:06:37.507
Now there's also a reception, just to add.
00:06:37.507 --> 00:06:44.367
So the city of Frankfurt is hosting a reception from 9 to 11 at the Capital City Museum, so there will be light refreshments.
00:06:44.367 --> 00:06:51.735
We've also got an impersonator, someone that does King impersonations of his speeches through the past.
00:06:51.735 --> 00:06:53.281
He'll be at the museum as well.
00:06:53.281 --> 00:06:54.367
So there'll be things to do.
00:06:54.367 --> 00:07:01.079
There's a poster station that's set up for anyone that wants to make their poster, so there are things to do in the museum starting at 9.
00:07:01.220 --> 00:07:04.769
Great, great From our perspective as a school district.
00:07:04.769 --> 00:07:09.247
Just so you all know, Franklin County School is supporting this.
00:07:09.247 --> 00:07:16.670
We've got kids who've been making posters now for the last week or so and they will continue to do so.
00:07:16.670 --> 00:07:18.192
So we're going to have a lot of posters.
00:07:18.192 --> 00:07:24.774
We are busing students down to the Capital City Museum to take part in the march.
00:07:24.774 --> 00:07:30.031
I know that our friends at Frankfurt Independent are doing the same thing, so we're really excited.
00:07:30.031 --> 00:07:33.934
We're going to have representatives from every one of our schools.
00:07:33.934 --> 00:07:36.423
Some schools are going to have a few more than others.
00:07:36.423 --> 00:07:52.954
It's hard to get all 15 schools to do the exact same thing, you know so, but we're going to have a very large contingent of students who are going to get to participate in this event and really recreate history, and so we're really excited about that.
00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:55.607
Let me bring in Mr Murphy just very briefly.
00:07:55.607 --> 00:07:59.466
Is there anything that you would like to add from the district's perspective?
00:07:59.466 --> 00:08:07.651
Talking about, you know, with our efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion and what you know, what makes us so excited about participating in this?
00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:34.315
Yeah, I think that, just as Kateema, I think, mentioned the students listening to the students' excitement and voice we can learn a lot just from our students and I think giving them an opportunity to share what their visions are for just creating a better community, a better state, a better country really is empowering to us and motivating us.
00:08:34.315 --> 00:08:40.008
So I always love the opportunity to listen and to learn from our students.
00:08:40.008 --> 00:08:46.410
I think they have a lot that they show and teach us on a daily basis, so the students are excited about participating.
00:08:46.851 --> 00:08:57.993
I've been getting pictures and their posters that they're making in schools and lots of questions that they have about just you know, what can I do to participate in that energy is.
00:08:57.993 --> 00:09:03.533
I love that energy, so looking forward to seeing all of our students there on March the 5th.
00:09:03.674 --> 00:09:19.566
Yeah, it's going to be a very exciting event, and it's one of those things where I love seeing when the community can come together and do something together that promotes more of what we need in this world equality, goodness, kindness, belonging All those things are incredibly important.
00:09:19.566 --> 00:09:34.316
So, going back to you, christy, in terms of the group, the focus on race relations and getting involved in this, what do you all see as one of the most beneficial outcomes of what this march is going to do for our community?
00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:38.113
It opens up the conversation, and that is what we stand for.
00:09:38.113 --> 00:09:40.301
People are going to be talking about this.
00:09:40.301 --> 00:09:42.611
People are going to be asking why are we marching?
00:09:42.611 --> 00:09:43.677
What are we marching for?
00:09:43.677 --> 00:09:46.326
What was the reason for the march in 64?
00:09:46.326 --> 00:09:51.402
So, all of these conversations, especially with our youth, that's what's important.
00:09:51.402 --> 00:09:59.250
They, just, like Larry and Katina said, they're taking an interest, they're excited and they're the ones that are going to make these changes.
00:09:59.250 --> 00:10:08.432
Okay, we have tried, we will continue to try, but it is the youth that is actually standing up and saying we do not like what's been happening.
00:10:08.432 --> 00:10:10.363
We will not allow it to continue.
00:10:10.363 --> 00:10:12.144
This is what we're going to do.
00:10:12.144 --> 00:10:14.269
They are the change that we want to see.
00:10:14.269 --> 00:10:16.615
Focus on race relations.
00:10:16.615 --> 00:10:22.038
That is what we're focusing on All of us coming together and just having that conversation.
00:10:22.840 --> 00:10:23.923
Yeah, what do you think, katima?
00:10:24.370 --> 00:10:27.677
I mean, I guess, coming from um.
00:10:27.677 --> 00:10:29.442
I graduated class of 2014.
00:10:29.442 --> 00:10:32.339
So I we were having our 10 year reunion this year, which is crazy.
00:10:32.359 --> 00:10:40.279
To me it's very crazy, but, coming from, coming from where I grew up and um, just throughout school, I know I learned a lot through the school.
00:10:40.279 --> 00:10:47.158
Through school, but I think once I hit 18, um, I didn't quite fully understand everything that was going on.
00:10:47.158 --> 00:10:51.120
I had to kind of do a little self-searching and um diving into that.
00:10:51.120 --> 00:11:06.101
But I've I learned at a very young age that in 25 years, my voice is going to be the one that needs to be heard and if I don't have, if I'm not educated about what's going on, and if I'm not making a making a direct action call on what needs to happen, I will have no impact.
00:11:06.101 --> 00:11:09.759
So I think representation matters right now, especially with the youth.
00:11:09.909 --> 00:11:17.020
I know that you know, if we we encourage them to vote when they turn 18, but some might, some might think you know, what can I do until I turn 18?
00:11:17.020 --> 00:11:21.381
But you, using your voice, you showing up to this March, you are making an impact.
00:11:21.381 --> 00:11:31.577
You are, you are clearly making a message to um anybody out there, because we still need change today and um, it's always going to be an uphill battle, but your voice matters, no matter what age you are.
00:11:31.577 --> 00:11:33.570
Um, I think elementary school kids are coming.
00:11:33.570 --> 00:11:36.450
Peaks like that is a huge representation matters.
00:11:36.529 --> 00:11:53.934
The youth are our future and if we're not giving them a platform now, they'll they'll probably feel like they never have a seat at the table, so right and and something that we talk about a lot uh in in education, uh, specifically in our district I think in many other districts as well it's this idea that we educate the whole child.
00:11:54.195 --> 00:12:01.721
You know, it's not just about teaching reading skills or math skills or, you know, playing a sport.
00:12:01.721 --> 00:12:15.738
It's it's all of those things and uh, being able to experience an event like this that's going to promote the ideas and ideals of equity and inclusion and belonging those things are really important.
00:12:15.738 --> 00:12:25.441
Um, and and unfortunately, sometimes in our world today, everything gets politicized, and this is not, this should not be political.
00:12:25.441 --> 00:12:26.049
It's.
00:12:26.049 --> 00:12:34.005
It's kind of the same thing that we run into in terms of when we talk about promoting this idea of funding public education effectively.
00:12:34.005 --> 00:12:37.379
That should have never become a political issue.
00:12:37.379 --> 00:12:47.672
The same way that treating each other with respect, dignity and and making sure that you're promoting equality that that's not something that should ever become.
00:12:47.672 --> 00:12:50.038
This party believes this and this party believes this.
00:12:50.038 --> 00:12:51.322
We're Americans.
00:12:51.322 --> 00:12:57.499
That's what our country was founded on this idea that everyone is created equal and we're we deserve to be treated that way.
00:12:57.971 --> 00:13:13.470
I'm glad you even mentioned that, because focus on race relations is not a political organization, and so I'm proud to be hosting this and sponsoring this because that's to let people know this isn't one way or another, this isn't a party fight, this is not political in any way.
00:13:13.470 --> 00:13:17.288
Just like you said, this is just people coming together for equality, right.
00:13:17.288 --> 00:13:20.825
You know, people coming together for justice, for freedoms.
00:13:20.825 --> 00:13:23.509
You know just your basic human rights.
00:13:23.509 --> 00:13:25.149
So we're excited to be.
00:13:26.134 --> 00:13:27.679
And anyone want to add anything else.
00:13:28.458 --> 00:13:29.269
I think I mean I think we covered it.
00:13:29.269 --> 00:13:42.009
I mean I think we're talking about humanity right now and kind of just equality across the board, and I really I'm I'm really happy to be, to be deep behind the scenes on this, because I have a huge sore spot in my heart for the kids.
00:13:42.009 --> 00:13:44.494
I really, I really love to bring them to the table.
00:13:44.494 --> 00:13:45.807
So I'm excited, I love it.
00:13:46.592 --> 00:13:54.229
Well, something that you all may not know is on this on the show, after we talk about the main topics of the day, we do something a little fun.
00:13:54.229 --> 00:13:57.178
We talk about some fun facts.
00:13:58.221 --> 00:13:58.722
I love it.
00:13:58.722 --> 00:13:59.546
Fun facts.
00:13:59.546 --> 00:14:00.708
It's time, all right.
00:14:01.731 --> 00:14:03.195
And, and, and these are going to be.
00:14:03.195 --> 00:14:04.979
And, Larry, you got to participate in this too.
00:14:04.999 --> 00:14:05.900
I'm ready, are you ready?
00:14:05.900 --> 00:14:07.182
All right, fun facts, oh yeah.
00:14:08.732 --> 00:14:12.470
Question number one what is your favorite movie of all time?
00:14:12.470 --> 00:14:14.950
We'll start with Larry Murphy, because he says he's ready.
00:14:14.950 --> 00:14:16.929
My favorite movie?
00:14:17.495 --> 00:14:18.629
I didn't even have to think about it.
00:14:19.534 --> 00:14:20.903
I didn't even have to think about it, I'm ready.
00:14:21.586 --> 00:14:23.461
All right, Katerina, you go.
00:14:23.461 --> 00:14:24.126
I need more time.
00:14:24.750 --> 00:14:27.081
My favorite movie of all times is the Goonies.
00:14:27.461 --> 00:14:28.547
Goonies Great.
00:14:28.726 --> 00:14:29.330
All time favorite movie.
00:14:29.610 --> 00:14:32.081
That's actually been mentioned before by a previous guest.
00:14:32.081 --> 00:14:33.807
So, okay, all right, harry.
00:14:33.868 --> 00:14:34.250
Potter.
00:14:34.613 --> 00:14:35.442
Oh, that's a good one.
00:14:35.442 --> 00:14:36.591
The original right the.
00:14:36.591 --> 00:14:38.195
Half-blood Prince is my favorite.
00:14:38.195 --> 00:14:39.359
Oh, that's a good one.
00:14:39.379 --> 00:14:42.230
Okay, all right, cool, larry, you're on the hot seat, man, let's go.
00:14:43.777 --> 00:14:46.368
I would probably say what's love got to do with it?
00:14:46.368 --> 00:14:46.427
Oh?
00:14:46.447 --> 00:14:46.809
that's a good one.
00:14:47.071 --> 00:14:50.961
Start at my my admiration for Tina Turner.
00:14:51.121 --> 00:14:55.413
Awesome, Very good, very good, all right, so Only have three of these.
00:14:55.413 --> 00:14:59.643
Second question what is your favorite food, katima?
00:15:00.063 --> 00:15:03.332
Oh gosh, favorite food.
00:15:03.332 --> 00:15:05.000
Favorite food had to say pasta.
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:08.614
Yeah, I don't care what kind of pasta it is, give me the noodles Carb loathe.
00:15:08.956 --> 00:15:09.919
Yeah, yeah, love it.
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:12.389
I could kill myself with chocolate chip cookies.
00:15:17.508 --> 00:15:17.528
I.
00:15:18.370 --> 00:15:19.413
Could eat it every day, yep.
00:15:19.754 --> 00:15:24.703
Yep, last question, and we're gonna start with Christy on this one last question, here we go.
00:15:24.703 --> 00:15:29.020
What is your favorite musical group or musical performer?
00:15:31.110 --> 00:15:32.134
Michael Jackson.
00:15:32.134 --> 00:15:33.662
I've been to three of his concerts.
00:15:33.662 --> 00:15:38.009
I find it, every single one of them, I love him, and I'll love him till the just till I die.
00:15:38.009 --> 00:15:40.657
I'm a super fan.
00:15:41.197 --> 00:15:45.769
I saw the Michael Jackson show in the Cirque de Soleil show in.
00:15:45.828 --> 00:15:46.029
Vegas.
00:15:46.029 --> 00:15:47.033
Oh, it's the best I've seen.
00:15:47.033 --> 00:15:53.639
That twice unbelievable when they did the hologram of him yeah, yeah crazy, crazy.
00:15:53.820 --> 00:15:57.716
All right, larry Murphy, I said mine Tina Turner and, yep, I got you beat.
00:15:57.716 --> 00:15:59.461
I've seen her eight times in a concert.
00:15:59.461 --> 00:16:07.653
Four times front row oh wow, wow, all right.
00:16:08.650 --> 00:16:12.221
Man, man, man, this one's hard for me because I'm a music junkie.
00:16:12.221 --> 00:16:15.239
Uk artist, I would say Brent Fias.
00:16:15.239 --> 00:16:18.392
So for all my kids out there that know, brent Fias, you're a cool kid.
00:16:18.392 --> 00:16:21.298
And then if I had to choose a group, it would be the temptations.
00:16:21.418 --> 00:16:22.982
Okay, temptations are solid.
00:16:22.982 --> 00:16:25.216
Listen, I really appreciate you all.
00:16:25.216 --> 00:16:28.759
