00:00:08.330 --> 00:00:12.695
Hello, I'm Philip Stoughton, I'm at Apex 2024 and I'm on the booth of CoYoung.
00:00:12.695 --> 00:00:15.263
I'm joined by Chris from Worthington Assembly.
00:00:15.263 --> 00:00:16.788
Chris, thanks for joining me.
00:00:16.788 --> 00:00:25.126
You're the CTO, so we're going to get a little bit technical, but first of all, let's start by introducing Worthington Assembly to anybody that doesn't know the company.
00:00:25.500 --> 00:00:36.313
Sure, we're a small contract manufacturer in New England about 40 people and we focus on quick turn and prototype runs, small volume, a lot of medical devices.
00:00:36.313 --> 00:00:42.509
We really like that industry and we're a strong technical team Everybody who works for us.
00:00:42.509 --> 00:00:43.700
They're really well trained.
00:00:43.700 --> 00:00:48.387
They're really focused on understanding what they do and being really good at it.
00:00:48.387 --> 00:00:58.813
So we spend a lot of time getting our staff like to the point where we can really put a lot of faith and trust in them, and we think that reflects pretty well in the products we deliver.
00:00:58.813 --> 00:01:02.243
Our customers really appreciate that the people who are building their stuff really know what they're doing.
00:01:02.545 --> 00:01:06.192
Yeah, that's really important in terms of technology.
00:01:06.192 --> 00:01:13.308
When you look at your client base, are they mainly in the local area or is it within a sort of limited geography?
00:01:14.340 --> 00:01:17.990
No, actually we ship all over the world, all over the United States.
00:01:17.990 --> 00:01:19.266
We ship to Australia even.
00:01:19.266 --> 00:01:21.766
We have some customers in Europe and the UK.
00:01:21.766 --> 00:01:31.225
But obviously I would say a pretty good majority is in the New England area, but we do ship all over the world.
00:01:32.001 --> 00:01:35.879
And you talk about that technical excellence, and you talk about having very well-trained staff.
00:01:35.879 --> 00:01:42.933
Do you think that's one of the key elements that your customers are looking for when they're seeking a contract manufacturer for these products?
00:01:43.180 --> 00:01:47.927
I don't know that it's necessarily something they're looking for right away, but I think it's something they come to appreciate eventually.
00:01:47.927 --> 00:01:57.028
Maybe they've been burned before and then when they find a place like us and they see the technical excellence of our staff, they're happy to see it and willing to pay a bit of a premium.
00:01:57.028 --> 00:02:03.727
It's not cheap to manufacture electronics in New England, but they find the value in it and they become a good customer.
00:02:03.727 --> 00:02:04.849
It doesn't fit everybody.
00:02:04.849 --> 00:02:07.474
It doesn't fit everybody, but the customers who keep coming back.
00:02:07.474 --> 00:02:08.925
It seems to work for them.
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:15.080
Yeah, and when you look at that, does that relate to where you sit within the product lifecycle Like?
00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:25.961
Are you getting involved in the design phase all the way through to end of life, or do some companies like to try and pin you in just to the PCBA part of the business, because the more you can do?
00:02:25.981 --> 00:02:26.622
the more you can add value.
00:02:26.622 --> 00:02:33.787
That's right, yeah, so usually the way that it gets started is you know, they're already designing their boards.
00:02:33.787 --> 00:02:38.829
They may already have a contract manufacturer that they've been working with, Maybe they're looking to second source, something like that.
00:02:38.829 --> 00:02:49.931
And then oftentimes we start to give them some pointers and we say, hey, you know, if you tidied up this or you change that, things would go so much easier.
00:02:49.931 --> 00:02:52.118
And then they've not gotten that feedback before and all of a sudden they are and they're saying, wow, this is really great.
00:02:52.118 --> 00:02:57.020
And we start we're able to grow those customers by, like just showing them that, hey, we actually kind of know what we're doing, you know.
00:02:57.262 --> 00:03:38.469
Yeah, yeah, I think one of the things that's really interesting about the contract manufacturing industry generally is that you know the industry started as pretty much built to print, so you get a box of components and you get some bare boards, throw these components on the boards and bring them back to us, and it's kind of expanded in both directions along the supply chain and there is that sense that if, if an oem will put faith in the contract manufacturing industry and hand everything over to you, you can deliver so much more for them because you can get that right from design and that impacts on what the board costs, the components that they need all the way through to the end of life.
00:03:38.469 --> 00:03:45.953
Do you see customers understanding that or is that, as you say, something they come to understand once they've seen it and felt?
00:03:45.973 --> 00:03:46.634
it Exactly.
00:03:46.634 --> 00:03:48.164
They tend to come to understand it.
00:03:48.164 --> 00:03:48.545
Eventually.
00:03:48.545 --> 00:03:49.430
We have one customer.
00:03:49.430 --> 00:04:01.133
They actually have their own SMT line, they do their own circuit board assembly, we do their overflow work and when they first came to us and they were showing us, you know, this is how we build things and this is how we do things.
00:04:01.219 --> 00:04:04.085
We're looking at it, going how long have you guys been building?
00:04:04.085 --> 00:04:11.241
We help them with that kind of a thing.
00:04:11.241 --> 00:04:13.390
It's, it's, and then it's way more.
00:04:13.390 --> 00:04:16.922
Now, hey guys, we're coming up with rev three of this product.
00:04:16.922 --> 00:04:18.846
Can can we talk about the design?
00:04:18.846 --> 00:04:27.576
And they'll we'll do a screen share and they'll show us what they're working on, what they're changing or what they're trying to do, and we'll tell them like, yeah, this is great, everything's great, just change this one little thing.
00:04:27.576 --> 00:04:37.415
Cause they've learned now they they've it really well themselves the first time for the most part, but maybe there's just one little change that we know will improve the manufacturability of the product.
00:04:37.415 --> 00:04:43.658
So, yeah, so eventually they don't know it right away, but they come to learn it over time yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
00:04:43.918 --> 00:04:49.281
And it's not just, it's not just about the, the technical side of the design, it's also about the supply chain.
00:04:49.281 --> 00:05:05.208
How much, how much thought is given to obsolescence about, you know, challenges with respect to supply chain, how you might be able to fit a different, alternative component if you need to, yeah, so you know, largely I'm going to be involved a lot in like how do we build it.
00:05:05.415 --> 00:05:06.959
I'm going to be less than me personally.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:09.365
I'm going to be less involved in the supply chain side of things.
00:05:09.365 --> 00:05:11.017
When does something go end of life?
00:05:11.017 --> 00:05:14.466
But typically I get involved when something does go end of life.
00:05:14.466 --> 00:05:19.177
Now it's an emergency.
00:05:19.177 --> 00:05:19.819
Now what do we do about it?
00:05:19.819 --> 00:05:25.279
Right, but because we've done it for a lot of customers, we tend to be able to know like, don't worry, we have this, here's what we can do about it, here's how we can address it.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:27.245
And it ends up going pretty smooth.
00:05:27.245 --> 00:05:41.286
Most of these manufacturers, if they're end of life in a product, they've already got a path on how you can transition to a new product, and so we just call the manufacturer, we talk to them maybe a three-way call with our customer and we smooth it out and it ends up being fine.
00:05:42.187 --> 00:05:42.906
We're at Apex.
00:05:42.906 --> 00:05:46.430
You've been here for a day and a half as CTO.
00:05:46.430 --> 00:05:48.192
It's your job to go and find some new toys.
00:05:48.192 --> 00:05:51.357
What have you seen?
00:05:51.377 --> 00:05:51.778
that's excited you.
00:05:51.778 --> 00:06:01.545
You know we spend I was just looking at our numbers we spent almost an entire employee's time last year depaneling circuit boards.
00:06:01.545 --> 00:06:02.728
I know this sounds crazy, right?
00:06:02.728 --> 00:06:12.802
So you think SMT machines, new stencil printers, aoi everybody talks AI and all these great new technologies, but it's like you know how much time we spend just depaneling boards.
00:06:12.802 --> 00:06:17.529
And so we're really looking for automation because it's just so difficult to hire.
00:06:17.529 --> 00:06:22.105
The region that we're in is largely a machining town.
00:06:22.105 --> 00:06:29.603
Right the area that we're in, there's a lot of machine shops CNC milling, grinding, these kinds of things and they can pay pretty well.
00:06:29.603 --> 00:06:34.706
So for us to hire operators and technicians to do this kind of work is quite challenging for us.
00:06:34.706 --> 00:06:37.985
So we're really having to find more and more ways to automate stuff.
00:06:37.985 --> 00:06:40.343
So that's something I'm really interested in seeing.
00:06:40.394 --> 00:06:55.725
I've seen some promising equipment here and I'm hoping to look at some more before the end of the show yeah, and when you look at that talent issue, obviously you talked earlier about training and the importance of that and you know you train people, get them the right jobs, you're going to retain them.
00:06:55.725 --> 00:06:58.882
Recruiting is clearly a challenge.
00:06:58.882 --> 00:07:04.146
Do you see automation as a route to grow without necessarily growing your workforce?
00:07:04.466 --> 00:07:05.127
Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:05.127 --> 00:07:08.483
I mean, it's the only thing we can do.
00:07:08.483 --> 00:07:09.507
It's the only thing we can do.
00:07:09.507 --> 00:07:13.245
There's not enough people to choose from.
00:07:13.245 --> 00:07:16.562
You can bring five, six people in for an interview.
00:07:16.562 --> 00:07:17.565
You can't hire them all.
00:07:17.565 --> 00:07:19.622
They don't all, they're not all the right fit.
00:07:19.622 --> 00:07:32.718
You might get one out of five, one out of six, and so when you already have a small pool and the only people that fit is maybe one out of five in that small pool, you got to look to automation to be able to continue to deliver to your customers.
00:07:32.718 --> 00:07:35.678
Otherwise, your customers are growing and we can't grow with them.
00:07:35.678 --> 00:07:36.939
They're going to go somewhere else.
00:07:37.620 --> 00:07:39.922
Some of that software automation as well as hardware automation.
00:07:39.942 --> 00:07:42.382
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely, it's constant.
00:07:42.382 --> 00:07:43.084
It's constant.
00:07:43.084 --> 00:07:49.958
It's a little bit of Finding vendors here at the show that can provide solutions, a little bit of building it ourselves.
00:07:49.958 --> 00:07:53.634
Ideally, we would prefer to buy it as much as possible.
00:07:53.634 --> 00:07:57.235
Some of it doesn't exist that we really want to do, so we have to build some of it ourselves.
00:07:57.235 --> 00:07:58.951
We've got some talented people to help us with that.
00:07:58.951 --> 00:08:12.516
But yeah, software, when you talk about lean manufacturing, lean manufacturing is not just how can we get the part on the board as efficiently as possible, it's everything that leads up to the point where the parts come in the building too.
00:08:12.516 --> 00:08:16.221
So, yeah, you've got to integrate software into your lean manufacturing journey.
00:08:18.365 --> 00:08:19.420
Yeah, and you've got to take that holistic approach.
00:08:19.420 --> 00:08:19.785
You mentioned AI.
00:08:19.785 --> 00:08:23.836
Five years ago, everybody had Industry 4.0 on their booth.
00:08:23.836 --> 00:08:25.630
Today, everybody's got AI.
00:08:26.605 --> 00:08:27.288
Everybody's got.
00:08:27.348 --> 00:08:28.232
AI on their booth.
00:08:28.232 --> 00:08:35.774
Is there anything that is really delivering with AI, or is it a waiting game and figuring out where the potential?
00:08:35.835 --> 00:08:36.397
savings are.
00:08:36.397 --> 00:08:37.990
That's a really great question.
00:08:37.990 --> 00:08:44.677
I think the AI experts in this world aren't quite sure what to use it for yet.
00:08:44.677 --> 00:08:47.331
Right when we're seeing it is.
00:08:47.331 --> 00:08:48.534
We're talking about software.
00:08:48.845 --> 00:08:52.876
It's obvious the first use case for AI is going to be in software.
00:08:52.876 --> 00:08:59.999
How can they apply that to other digital manufacturing tools?
00:08:59.999 --> 00:09:04.158
So, for example, an AOI machine, for example, or an SPI machine?
00:09:04.158 --> 00:09:05.764
That is a digital manufacturing tool.
00:09:05.764 --> 00:09:09.677
It's not doing any physical changes to the product, it's taking pictures manufacturing tool.
00:09:09.677 --> 00:09:12.345
It's not doing any physical changes to the product, it's taking pictures.
00:09:12.345 --> 00:09:15.551
How can AI, which is natively digital, apply itself to AOI and SPI?
00:09:15.551 --> 00:09:19.317
I think I kind of see that as being the first place where it's going to have an impact.
00:09:19.317 --> 00:09:24.716
And that's kind of like what I'm keeping my eye on and trying to see if somebody's making some big strides there.
00:09:24.716 --> 00:09:26.788
Do I see it yet?
00:09:26.788 --> 00:09:37.378
I haven't seen it yet, but I I have to imagine it's around the corner because using you know, using llms and chat, gpt and co-pilot things like that myself you just it's.
00:09:37.378 --> 00:09:41.355
It blows me away how powerful it is and how can we use that to some of this stuff?
00:09:41.355 --> 00:09:42.225
It's got to be possible.
00:09:42.365 --> 00:09:57.129
It's got to be possible, it's got to be possible and and I think, like you say, that that co-pilot relationship with ai is really important really well-trained staff, you can um, you can actually make their jobs more interesting and actually leverage ai for them to become more productive.
00:09:57.129 --> 00:10:00.119
And that's the, you know, that's the smart way to do it, the, the.
00:10:00.119 --> 00:10:10.495
The idea is not necessarily to reduce your workforce, but it's to grow your business without necessarily increasing your workforce at the same rate I You'll be able to pay them more.
00:10:10.635 --> 00:10:11.376
Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:11.376 --> 00:10:16.136
I want to give you the opportunity to plug your own podcast, Pick Place Podcast.
00:10:16.136 --> 00:10:20.658
Tell me a bit about that and tell me how long you've been doing it and what kind of topics you're covering.
00:10:20.841 --> 00:10:22.687
Yeah, absolutely so.
00:10:22.687 --> 00:10:27.839
The topic is as simple as how does a conveyor work?
00:10:27.839 --> 00:10:30.072
Why do manufacturers use conveyors?
00:10:30.072 --> 00:10:34.734
Because we're finding, before COVID, we would do a lot of tours.
00:10:34.734 --> 00:10:49.448
We would bring people in junior engineers, college students and we would show them this is what manufacturing looks like, this is how a circuit board gets built, and when they got to see those kinds of things, it informed their design decisions and they became better designers.
00:10:49.448 --> 00:10:59.293
It reduced the cost of building products for their companies, right, and then COVID hit no more tours, so we decided to start to do the podcast during COVID 2020.
00:11:00.495 --> 00:11:06.721
And again, how do you explain something like a stencil printer over an audio only medium?
00:11:06.721 --> 00:11:08.511
It was tricky to figure out how to do that.
00:11:08.511 --> 00:11:15.687
We don't have the budget to do video and to be recording and editing all these things, so we like to talk about the whole manufacturing process.
00:11:15.687 --> 00:11:19.596
We bring in industry experts to talk about maybe a particular thing.
00:11:19.596 --> 00:11:30.421
We had IPC, we had John Mitchell, dr John W Mitchell, on our show, and the whole goal is to try to educate people on, or educate engineers on, the manufacturing process.
00:11:30.863 --> 00:11:35.845
What we're finding, though, is that a lot of people in the manufacturing industry have really latched onto it and enjoyed it.
00:11:35.845 --> 00:11:43.658
So when they do new hires, they're telling people hey, listen to these episodes of this podcast and you'll it'll bring you up to speed much quicker.
00:11:43.658 --> 00:11:45.606
And we're doing the same thing with our own employees.
00:11:45.606 --> 00:11:57.099
When we have new hires, we say, hey, listen to these, these episodes, you'll understand our whole process so much faster, rather than take you a couple years before you get a holistic idea of how how a circuit board gets built, you can learn it a lot quicker.
00:11:57.099 --> 00:11:58.445
So it's, it's been great.
00:11:58.445 --> 00:11:59.869
We did a meet up here at the show.
00:11:59.869 --> 00:12:00.831
It was a lot of fun.
00:12:00.831 --> 00:12:04.908
We're hoping to do some more next year, but, um, yeah, I'm, I'm having fun with it.
00:12:04.908 --> 00:12:12.120
It's not a uh, it's not something I'm spending a ton of time on, but we're seeing some interest and I'm glad it exists.
00:12:12.504 --> 00:12:13.951
Yeah, no, it sounds like you're enjoying it.
00:12:13.951 --> 00:12:23.456
It sounds like it is a nice communication tool internally, it's a nice communication tool externally and it's turning into a training resource that you can use as well.
00:12:23.456 --> 00:12:24.339
So really valuable.
00:12:24.339 --> 00:12:29.297
We'll put a connection in the show notes, but it's Pick Place Podcast.
00:12:29.297 --> 00:12:33.875
They can just search for that on Spotify or wherever they get their podcasts.
00:12:33.875 --> 00:12:35.446
Absolutely, Chris.
00:12:35.446 --> 00:12:36.268
Thanks for talking to me.
00:12:36.268 --> 00:12:37.010
Always a pleasure.
00:12:37.010 --> 00:12:38.254
We'll chat again soon.
00:12:38.254 --> 00:12:41.703
Thanks for having me, Thank you.
00:00:08.330 --> 00:00:12.695
Hello, I'm Philip Stoughton, I'm at Apex 2024 and I'm on the booth of CoYoung.
00:00:12.695 --> 00:00:15.263
I'm joined by Chris from Worthington Assembly.
00:00:15.263 --> 00:00:16.788
Chris, thanks for joining me.
00:00:16.788 --> 00:00:25.126
You're the CTO, so we're going to get a little bit technical, but first of all, let's start by introducing Worthington Assembly to anybody that doesn't know the company.
00:00:25.500 --> 00:00:36.313
Sure, we're a small contract manufacturer in New England about 40 people and we focus on quick turn and prototype runs, small volume, a lot of medical devices.
00:00:36.313 --> 00:00:42.509
We really like that industry and we're a strong technical team Everybody who works for us.
00:00:42.509 --> 00:00:43.700
They're really well trained.
00:00:43.700 --> 00:00:48.387
They're really focused on understanding what they do and being really good at it.
00:00:48.387 --> 00:00:58.813
So we spend a lot of time getting our staff like to the point where we can really put a lot of faith and trust in them, and we think that reflects pretty well in the products we deliver.
00:00:58.813 --> 00:01:02.243
Our customers really appreciate that the people who are building their stuff really know what they're doing.
00:01:02.545 --> 00:01:06.192
Yeah, that's really important in terms of technology.
00:01:06.192 --> 00:01:13.308
When you look at your client base, are they mainly in the local area or is it within a sort of limited geography?
00:01:14.340 --> 00:01:17.990
No, actually we ship all over the world, all over the United States.
00:01:17.990 --> 00:01:19.266
We ship to Australia even.
00:01:19.266 --> 00:01:21.766
We have some customers in Europe and the UK.
00:01:21.766 --> 00:01:31.225
But obviously I would say a pretty good majority is in the New England area, but we do ship all over the world.
00:01:32.001 --> 00:01:35.879
And you talk about that technical excellence, and you talk about having very well-trained staff.
00:01:35.879 --> 00:01:42.933
Do you think that's one of the key elements that your customers are looking for when they're seeking a contract manufacturer for these products?
00:01:43.180 --> 00:01:47.927
I don't know that it's necessarily something they're looking for right away, but I think it's something they come to appreciate eventually.
00:01:47.927 --> 00:01:57.028
Maybe they've been burned before and then when they find a place like us and they see the technical excellence of our staff, they're happy to see it and willing to pay a bit of a premium.
00:01:57.028 --> 00:02:03.727
It's not cheap to manufacture electronics in New England, but they find the value in it and they become a good customer.
00:02:03.727 --> 00:02:04.849
It doesn't fit everybody.
00:02:04.849 --> 00:02:07.474
It doesn't fit everybody, but the customers who keep coming back.
00:02:07.474 --> 00:02:08.925
It seems to work for them.
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:15.080
Yeah, and when you look at that, does that relate to where you sit within the product lifecycle Like?
00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:25.961
Are you getting involved in the design phase all the way through to end of life, or do some companies like to try and pin you in just to the PCBA part of the business, because the more you can do?
00:02:25.981 --> 00:02:26.622
the more you can add value.
00:02:26.622 --> 00:02:33.787
That's right, yeah, so usually the way that it gets started is you know, they're already designing their boards.
00:02:33.787 --> 00:02:38.829
They may already have a contract manufacturer that they've been working with, Maybe they're looking to second source, something like that.
00:02:38.829 --> 00:02:49.931
And then oftentimes we start to give them some pointers and we say, hey, you know, if you tidied up this or you change that, things would go so much easier.
00:02:49.931 --> 00:02:52.118
And then they've not gotten that feedback before and all of a sudden they are and they're saying, wow, this is really great.
00:02:52.118 --> 00:02:57.020
And we start we're able to grow those customers by, like just showing them that, hey, we actually kind of know what we're doing, you know.
00:02:57.262 --> 00:03:38.469
00:03:38.469 --> 00:03:45.953
Do you see customers understanding that or is that, as you say, something they come to understand once they've seen it and felt?
00:03:45.973 --> 00:03:46.634
it Exactly.
00:03:46.634 --> 00:03:48.164
They tend to come to understand it.
00:03:48.164 --> 00:03:48.545
Eventually.
00:03:48.545 --> 00:03:49.430
We have one customer.
00:03:49.430 --> 00:04:01.133
They actually have their own SMT line, they do their own circuit board assembly, we do their overflow work and when they first came to us and they were showing us, you know, this is how we build things and this is how we do things.
00:04:01.219 --> 00:04:04.085
We're looking at it, going how long have you guys been building?
00:04:04.085 --> 00:04:11.241
We help them with that kind of a thing.
00:04:11.241 --> 00:04:13.390
It's, it's, and then it's way more.
00:04:13.390 --> 00:04:16.922
Now, hey guys, we're coming up with rev three of this product.
00:04:16.922 --> 00:04:18.846
Can can we talk about the design?
00:04:18.846 --> 00:04:27.576
And they'll we'll do a screen share and they'll show us what they're working on, what they're changing or what they're trying to do, and we'll tell them like, yeah, this is great, everything's great, just change this one little thing.
00:04:27.576 --> 00:04:37.415
Cause they've learned now they they've it really well themselves the first time for the most part, but maybe there's just one little change that we know will improve the manufacturability of the product.
00:04:37.415 --> 00:04:43.658
So, yeah, so eventually they don't know it right away, but they come to learn it over time yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
00:04:43.918 --> 00:04:49.281
And it's not just, it's not just about the, the technical side of the design, it's also about the supply chain.
00:04:49.281 --> 00:05:05.208
How much, how much thought is given to obsolescence about, you know, challenges with respect to supply chain, how you might be able to fit a different, alternative component if you need to, yeah, so you know, largely I'm going to be involved a lot in like how do we build it.
00:05:05.415 --> 00:05:06.959
I'm going to be less than me personally.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:09.365
I'm going to be less involved in the supply chain side of things.
00:05:09.365 --> 00:05:11.017
When does something go end of life?
00:05:11.017 --> 00:05:14.466
But typically I get involved when something does go end of life.
00:05:14.466 --> 00:05:19.177
Now it's an emergency.
00:05:19.177 --> 00:05:19.819
Now what do we do about it?
00:05:19.819 --> 00:05:25.279
Right, but because we've done it for a lot of customers, we tend to be able to know like, don't worry, we have this, here's what we can do about it, here's how we can address it.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:27.245
And it ends up going pretty smooth.
00:05:27.245 --> 00:05:41.286
Most of these manufacturers, if they're end of life in a product, they've already got a path on how you can transition to a new product, and so we just call the manufacturer, we talk to them maybe a three-way call with our customer and we smooth it out and it ends up being fine.
00:05:42.187 --> 00:05:42.906
We're at Apex.
00:05:42.906 --> 00:05:46.430
You've been here for a day and a half as CTO.
00:05:46.430 --> 00:05:48.192
It's your job to go and find some new toys.
00:05:48.192 --> 00:05:51.357
What have you seen?
00:05:51.377 --> 00:05:51.778
that's excited you.
00:05:51.778 --> 00:06:01.545
You know we spend I was just looking at our numbers we spent almost an entire employee's time last year depaneling circuit boards.
00:06:01.545 --> 00:06:02.728
I know this sounds crazy, right?
00:06:02.728 --> 00:06:12.802
So you think SMT machines, new stencil printers, aoi everybody talks AI and all these great new technologies, but it's like you know how much time we spend just depaneling boards.
00:06:12.802 --> 00:06:17.529
And so we're really looking for automation because it's just so difficult to hire.
00:06:17.529 --> 00:06:22.105
The region that we're in is largely a machining town.
00:06:22.105 --> 00:06:29.603
Right the area that we're in, there's a lot of machine shops CNC milling, grinding, these kinds of things and they can pay pretty well.
00:06:29.603 --> 00:06:34.706
So for us to hire operators and technicians to do this kind of work is quite challenging for us.
00:06:34.706 --> 00:06:37.985
So we're really having to find more and more ways to automate stuff.
00:06:37.985 --> 00:06:40.343
So that's something I'm really interested in seeing.
00:06:40.394 --> 00:06:55.725
I've seen some promising equipment here and I'm hoping to look at some more before the end of the show yeah, and when you look at that talent issue, obviously you talked earlier about training and the importance of that and you know you train people, get them the right jobs, you're going to retain them.
00:06:55.725 --> 00:06:58.882
Recruiting is clearly a challenge.
00:06:58.882 --> 00:07:04.146
Do you see automation as a route to grow without necessarily growing your workforce?
00:07:04.466 --> 00:07:05.127
Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:05.127 --> 00:07:08.483
I mean, it's the only thing we can do.
00:07:08.483 --> 00:07:09.507
It's the only thing we can do.
00:07:09.507 --> 00:07:13.245
There's not enough people to choose from.
00:07:13.245 --> 00:07:16.562
You can bring five, six people in for an interview.
00:07:16.562 --> 00:07:17.565
You can't hire them all.
00:07:17.565 --> 00:07:19.622
They don't all, they're not all the right fit.
00:07:19.622 --> 00:07:32.718
You might get one out of five, one out of six, and so when you already have a small pool and the only people that fit is maybe one out of five in that small pool, you got to look to automation to be able to continue to deliver to your customers.
00:07:32.718 --> 00:07:35.678
Otherwise, your customers are growing and we can't grow with them.
00:07:35.678 --> 00:07:36.939
They're going to go somewhere else.
00:07:37.620 --> 00:07:39.922
Some of that software automation as well as hardware automation.
00:07:39.942 --> 00:07:42.382
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely, it's constant.
00:07:42.382 --> 00:07:43.084
It's constant.
00:07:43.084 --> 00:07:49.958
It's a little bit of Finding vendors here at the show that can provide solutions, a little bit of building it ourselves.
00:07:49.958 --> 00:07:53.634
Ideally, we would prefer to buy it as much as possible.
00:07:53.634 --> 00:07:57.235
Some of it doesn't exist that we really want to do, so we have to build some of it ourselves.
00:07:57.235 --> 00:07:58.951
We've got some talented people to help us with that.
00:07:58.951 --> 00:08:12.516
But yeah, software, when you talk about lean manufacturing, lean manufacturing is not just how can we get the part on the board as efficiently as possible, it's everything that leads up to the point where the parts come in the building too.
00:08:12.516 --> 00:08:16.221
So, yeah, you've got to integrate software into your lean manufacturing journey.
00:08:18.365 --> 00:08:19.420
Yeah, and you've got to take that holistic approach.
00:08:19.420 --> 00:08:19.785
You mentioned AI.
00:08:19.785 --> 00:08:23.836
Five years ago, everybody had Industry 4.0 on their booth.
00:08:23.836 --> 00:08:25.630
Today, everybody's got AI.
00:08:26.605 --> 00:08:27.288
Everybody's got.
00:08:27.348 --> 00:08:28.232
AI on their booth.
00:08:28.232 --> 00:08:35.774
Is there anything that is really delivering with AI, or is it a waiting game and figuring out where the potential?
00:08:35.835 --> 00:08:36.397
savings are.
00:08:36.397 --> 00:08:37.990
That's a really great question.
00:08:37.990 --> 00:08:44.677
I think the AI experts in this world aren't quite sure what to use it for yet.
00:08:44.677 --> 00:08:47.331
Right when we're seeing it is.
00:08:47.331 --> 00:08:48.534
We're talking about software.
00:08:48.845 --> 00:08:52.876
It's obvious the first use case for AI is going to be in software.
00:08:52.876 --> 00:08:59.999
How can they apply that to other digital manufacturing tools?
00:08:59.999 --> 00:09:04.158
So, for example, an AOI machine, for example, or an SPI machine?
00:09:04.158 --> 00:09:05.764
That is a digital manufacturing tool.
00:09:05.764 --> 00:09:09.677
It's not doing any physical changes to the product, it's taking pictures manufacturing tool.
00:09:09.677 --> 00:09:12.345
It's not doing any physical changes to the product, it's taking pictures.
00:09:12.345 --> 00:09:15.551
How can AI, which is natively digital, apply itself to AOI and SPI?
00:09:15.551 --> 00:09:19.317
I think I kind of see that as being the first place where it's going to have an impact.
00:09:19.317 --> 00:09:24.716
And that's kind of like what I'm keeping my eye on and trying to see if somebody's making some big strides there.
00:09:24.716 --> 00:09:26.788
Do I see it yet?
00:09:26.788 --> 00:09:37.378
I haven't seen it yet, but I I have to imagine it's around the corner because using you know, using llms and chat, gpt and co-pilot things like that myself you just it's.
00:09:37.378 --> 00:09:41.355
It blows me away how powerful it is and how can we use that to some of this stuff?
00:09:41.355 --> 00:09:42.225
It's got to be possible.
00:09:42.365 --> 00:09:57.129
It's got to be possible, it's got to be possible and and I think, like you say, that that co-pilot relationship with ai is really important really well-trained staff, you can um, you can actually make their jobs more interesting and actually leverage ai for them to become more productive.
00:09:57.129 --> 00:10:00.119
And that's the, you know, that's the smart way to do it, the, the.
00:10:00.119 --> 00:10:10.495
The idea is not necessarily to reduce your workforce, but it's to grow your business without necessarily increasing your workforce at the same rate I You'll be able to pay them more.
00:10:10.635 --> 00:10:11.376
Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:11.376 --> 00:10:16.136
I want to give you the opportunity to plug your own podcast, Pick Place Podcast.
00:10:16.136 --> 00:10:20.658
Tell me a bit about that and tell me how long you've been doing it and what kind of topics you're covering.
00:10:20.841 --> 00:10:22.687
Yeah, absolutely so.
00:10:22.687 --> 00:10:27.839
The topic is as simple as how does a conveyor work?
00:10:27.839 --> 00:10:30.072
Why do manufacturers use conveyors?
00:10:30.072 --> 00:10:34.734
Because we're finding, before COVID, we would do a lot of tours.
00:10:34.734 --> 00:10:49.448
We would bring people in junior engineers, college students and we would show them this is what manufacturing looks like, this is how a circuit board gets built, and when they got to see those kinds of things, it informed their design decisions and they became better designers.
00:10:49.448 --> 00:10:59.293
It reduced the cost of building products for their companies, right, and then COVID hit no more tours, so we decided to start to do the podcast during COVID 2020.
00:11:00.495 --> 00:11:06.721
And again, how do you explain something like a stencil printer over an audio only medium?
00:11:06.721 --> 00:11:08.511
It was tricky to figure out how to do that.
00:11:08.511 --> 00:11:15.687
We don't have the budget to do video and to be recording and editing all these things, so we like to talk about the whole manufacturing process.
00:11:15.687 --> 00:11:19.596
We bring in industry experts to talk about maybe a particular thing.
00:11:19.596 --> 00:11:30.421
We had IPC, we had John Mitchell, dr John W Mitchell, on our show, and the whole goal is to try to educate people on, or educate engineers on, the manufacturing process.
00:11:30.863 --> 00:11:35.845
What we're finding, though, is that a lot of people in the manufacturing industry have really latched onto it and enjoyed it.
00:11:35.845 --> 00:11:43.658
So when they do new hires, they're telling people hey, listen to these episodes of this podcast and you'll it'll bring you up to speed much quicker.
00:11:43.658 --> 00:11:45.606
And we're doing the same thing with our own employees.
00:11:45.606 --> 00:11:57.099
When we have new hires, we say, hey, listen to these, these episodes, you'll understand our whole process so much faster, rather than take you a couple years before you get a holistic idea of how how a circuit board gets built, you can learn it a lot quicker.
00:11:57.099 --> 00:11:58.445
So it's, it's been great.
00:11:58.445 --> 00:11:59.869
We did a meet up here at the show.
00:11:59.869 --> 00:12:00.831
It was a lot of fun.
00:12:00.831 --> 00:12:04.908
We're hoping to do some more next year, but, um, yeah, I'm, I'm having fun with it.
00:12:04.908 --> 00:12:12.120
It's not a uh, it's not something I'm spending a ton of time on, but we're seeing some interest and I'm glad it exists.
00:12:12.504 --> 00:12:13.951
Yeah, no, it sounds like you're enjoying it.
00:12:13.951 --> 00:12:23.456
It sounds like it is a nice communication tool internally, it's a nice communication tool externally and it's turning into a training resource that you can use as well.
00:12:23.456 --> 00:12:24.339
So really valuable.
00:12:24.339 --> 00:12:29.297
We'll put a connection in the show notes, but it's Pick Place Podcast.
00:12:29.297 --> 00:12:33.875
They can just search for that on Spotify or wherever they get their podcasts.
