אודות פרק זה
A single song can crack you open in the best way. We start with how getting lost in music can pull us into someone else’s thoughts, then land on “Life of the Party” and the gut-level question it raises: why do so many of us wait until grief to finally say what we mean to our mothers, our families, and ourselves? I talk through a recent disconnect with my mom and what I want to change now, so I do not need art or tragedy to translate my feelings later.
From there, the conversation turns into a practical map for trauma healing and mental health: simplifying life, taking ownership of time, and using yoga as a discipline that goes beyond “stick to a routine.” For me, real discipline is noticing when I am off, correcting it, and living with the consequences without dodging the lesson. That mindset ties into communication, too. Words can be sloppy tools. Two people can use the same language and still not be having the same conversation, especially when context, culture, and emotion get stripped away.
Then we widen the lens to sports and money. Canceling YouTube TV becomes a small move toward mindful consumption and more family bonding, and it leads into a bigger critique of football trades, exploited labor, and all the revenue streams built around athletes. We end on a challenge that sticks: do you want to make money, build wealth, or build institutions that actually feed and free your people?
If any part of this hits home, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. What is one conversation you are done postponing?

00:00:01.919 --> 00:00:04.080
Hey, so um back.
00:00:04.959 --> 00:00:12.960
And um I've taken a few weeks off because uh I didn't feel like recording anything.
00:00:13.279 --> 00:00:28.079
I thought I wanted to record something, but something always came up, and I've realized that I have to protect my piece because it'll be a phone call.
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:39.359
I may like start listening to music to prepare myself and get in that creative mode, but then I'll listen to too much music and I'll get consumed in other people's thoughts.
00:00:39.679 --> 00:00:47.840
And that's kind of one of the things that uh brings us here is getting consumed in others' thoughts.
00:00:48.000 --> 00:01:10.400
Because man, I was listening to uh Life of the Party this morning, unpacking some trauma, and in unpacking that, you know, you're listening to Andre 3000 and Kanye talk to their mom, uh their deceased moms, and it's just an amazing song.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:18.560
Like I text Parlay Pete today and was like, hey, that song is like uh LeBron James of hip-hop, right?
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:20.560
It has a goat case.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:24.640
You think about the production, the lyrics, the artistry.
00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:27.200
It's just a beautiful song.
00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:30.879
Uh I mean, there's even disses in the song.
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:34.400
Uh it's just the complete song, you know.
00:01:34.640 --> 00:01:49.519
And but also the things they were getting off, man, and I kept listening to it and listening to it, and it made some things make sense to me because these two guys were having an honest conversation with their mothers.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:56.879
And I recently had an honest conversation with my mother, and there was a disconnect.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:24.080
And listening to the song, I was just like, man, I've got to make sure that when my mother passes away, I don't have to write the letter, say the words, do the artistic creative piece to have the conversation, to have conversations with her.
00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:24.719
You know what I mean?
00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:41.840
And not like a like I'm definitely gonna talk to my mom because I've I've gotten in touch with my family and I I go to the family graveyard uh on a regular basis now to talk to my deceased, some of my deceased family members, uh, because I do believe there's power in that.
00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:45.520
But point being, it's not that I'm not gonna talk to my mother in that way.
00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:56.879
It's more so the it's more so not having anything to work out, you know.
00:02:56.960 --> 00:03:01.919
You want to have that alignment before.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:08.159
And I think about that with anybody in your life, you know, just want to make sure everything is good.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:11.840
And oftentimes words confuse us.
00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:24.159
Some would say by design, but wow, that was a rant that I didn't plan on opening with, but that's the beauty of showing up without topics, is that you kind of free flow.
00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:37.199
And earlier today, what really confirmed that I was going to pod was that I I was unpacking some some trauma, right?
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:48.000
And the way that I live now, I've simplified a lot of my day-to-day life, and I create a lot of time for myself, and I've really started to gain ownership of my time.
00:03:48.240 --> 00:04:05.280
So even when I go to work, yes, I know I have to be here for this many hours, but this is where I want to be uh because this is my means of making money right now and uh acquiring skills and building community uh to live the life that I want to live.
00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:05.759
Right.
00:04:05.919 --> 00:04:08.159
So I take control of my day.
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:18.639
And in that, I like try to unpack trauma uh because you know, the things that lead us to medicine lead us to needing regular therapy.
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:22.240
Somebody who goes to therapy and I am all for therapy, right?
00:04:22.319 --> 00:04:32.319
If you're healing yourself, um I try to like regularly unpack things so they don't fester and then I can move accordingly.
00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:35.199
And uh I've learned that through yoga.
00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:41.439
And I actually talked to a friend about some yoga and he and he recommended me a book.
00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:44.959
And um, I'm gonna order it, I'm gonna read it soon.
00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:52.639
So, but, anyways, in that unpacking, I was just like, wow, I'm an only child with two sisters.
00:04:56.480 --> 00:04:59.279
Something's profound about that.
00:05:01.199 --> 00:05:08.560
And I often look at things conceptually first when it's not emotional.
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:14.720
Now, if it's emotional, I'm in the moment, and I look at it for kind of what it is actually.
00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:22.079
But when I don't bring emotions into things, I think about the concept uh conceptually, and I go, what does this mean?
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:28.399
And it took me to my first tattoo, angel and a demon, like fighting over my heart.
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:47.519
And hit his this constant conflict with duality and understanding duality and my inability to level set with people in communication of I wouldn't even say duality, of the fact that multiple things can be true.
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:57.120
And it's like, yeah, I know multiple things can be true because I'm an only child, I'm my mom's only child.
00:05:57.279 --> 00:05:59.600
I grew up in my mom's home.
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.600
But I have two sisters that came before me.
00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:10.639
So for my dad, you know.
00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:15.360
So yeah, it's different, you know.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:31.120
And for so long, I've like clinged to this only child thing, and and now I'm kind of at a point to where it's like, well, let's figure out how to unpack and create true bonds with my sisters because they're my sisters.
00:06:31.519 --> 00:06:46.480
But in understanding that, you go, wow, two things really can be true, and there's not a right or wrong approach to life, there is the approach you choose to take and the results that come with that approach, uh, based upon the situation you're in and the circumstances.
00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:55.680
So if I can accept that about myself, I can accept that with anybody.
00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:48.319
And because I can see it and it's true, I could tell you that, hey man, oftentimes when we disagree, it's because we're not having the same conversation, we're using the same words, but by design, words are confusing, and words are used to express what's going on in your brain, and oftentimes we struggle to truly express what's going on in our brain, and the words that we use can be one of the best representatives of it, but like words don't speak to emotions, right?
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:51.360
Words don't always have the same emphasis, you know.
00:07:51.439 --> 00:08:04.160
Sometimes when you want to hug somebody and you feel them close to you, yeah, like there's no word to describe that actual feeling and what it feels for you.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:26.319
And so because we use simplified words, words simplify things, right, to communicate, oftentimes things get lost in translation.
00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:38.399
And because things get lost in translation, we are using the same words, but they mean different things.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:09:00.559
And even with fet definitions of words, there's still a different understanding of the word because of how it's introduced to you, your your ability to retain information, your experiences, all of this, right?
00:09:01.759 --> 00:09:03.360
So it creates fog.
00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:10.639
And in this world we live in today, things are so foggy.
00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:13.200
So we have to we have to cut that out.
00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:27.919
But back to this idea of things meaning multiple things, and it takes me to hey, you know, I wear a lot of uh paraphernalia from the colleges that I uh have degrees from, right?
00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:29.840
I have on a Morehouse hat right now.
00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:35.919
Pretty much every day at work, I have on something Morehouse or University of Tennessee, right?
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:41.519
Anytime you see me out, I usually have on something Morehouse University of Tennessee.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:47.279
At a former time in my life, I used to wear a lot of my own material uh branded stuff that I made, right?
00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:56.559
And I wear Morehouse and UT stuff because it skips a lot in conversation, right?
00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:03.360
Uh somebody sees you wearing Morehouse paraphernalia at my age, they assume you're an alum because it's niche.
00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.000
And then in Bulldog country, there aren't a lot of Tennessee fans.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:14.240
So if somebody like sees me in the Tennessee stuff, they say something and I'm like, yeah, got my master's there.
00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:16.320
Boom, changes the conversation.
00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:17.519
We get a lot out.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:26.240
And oftentimes that works in my favor because these are positive institutions and they represent you know good things.
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:37.279
But oftentimes, especially in the black community, based on someone else's experience of a Morehouse man, they make a lot of assumptions.
00:10:37.360 --> 00:10:42.159
And it's like, hey, yo, man, I went to that institution, but them niggas don't represent me.
00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:56.240
And in that same context, I think about how in our miscommunication, because of the complexity of, for one, the English language, it's like, oh shoot.
00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:02.159
This word means generally something, right?
00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.120
But even a word in itself lacks context.
00:11:08.320 --> 00:11:12.399
Even when you use more words to contextualize it, it lacks context.
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:31.679
And now imagine taking those words that already lack some context, then you translate those words into another language.
00:11:31.840 --> 00:11:36.320
And anytime you translate words into another language, you lose context.
00:11:36.559 --> 00:11:42.080
That's why you can't really know a culture if you don't know the language.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:52.799
So I didn't think I was going here today.
00:11:53.440 --> 00:12:41.679
So now you take this these words that are already out of context because they're expressing things that happen, translate them into a different language, then you remove them from the context in which they existed, and then you try to interpret and contextualize those same words and apply them in a different era with people who have different experiences you and define things differently.
00:12:42.240 --> 00:13:01.759
In a world where we say words are bond, but we also say actions speak louder than words, so we should move off of actions and let words support actions instead of actions supporting the words, right?
00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:05.759
You follow me here?
00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:11.679
And we wonder why we aren't confused.
00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:23.200
We wonder why there's so much turmoil, and I don't even mean in the world, I mean day to day.
00:13:55.519 --> 00:14:14.960
But we don't take that and then work with the person who we describe that word, who we describe with that word, and have that relationship with, to then level set what it is they mean by that.
00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:24.480
So if we don't do that with our loved ones and it causes communication, what the hell does it do with our people we don't know?
00:14:24.720 --> 00:14:30.559
People that we deem as threats, people who are we are told that are threats to us, right?
00:14:31.440 --> 00:14:33.360
It creates confusion.
00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:49.360
Yo, it's crazy how you can unpack things in your life.
00:14:50.080 --> 00:15:12.000
Oh, a life, you can unpack things in your life and then put that into reality and then be like, dang, hold on, I gotta do this right here, and then put that into like reality and realize that we are all a microcosm of the world that we live in.
00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:26.559
So, with us being a microcosm of the world that we live in, if we work on ourselves, we will actually see the world in the way that we want it to be.
00:15:28.320 --> 00:15:32.720
Instead of trying to work on everything else, we should work on ourselves.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:46.320
And that's one of the conflicts I've been having with just people in my life because I've truly started working on myself, and for many reasons, uh the way that I've gotten there is through yoga.
00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:50.639
And doing yoga is just discipline, man.
00:15:51.120 --> 00:15:58.080
It's discipline, and what I thought discipline is was having a routine and sticking to the routine and all of that stuff.
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:01.519
But it's like, no, that's part of it.
00:16:01.840 --> 00:16:11.840
But then when you vary, when you waver, right, you understand, oh, here's why the routine, this is why I'm off routine.
00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:15.440
Oh, this is why, oh, this doesn't make sense.
00:16:15.679 --> 00:16:16.799
Oh, okay.
00:16:18.159 --> 00:16:32.639
The discipline is knowing when you're not being disciplined, and then having the discipline to correct yourself, and also living with the consequences of what comes with breaking your discipline.
00:16:33.759 --> 00:16:35.360
One second, I gotta pick up this.
00:16:35.440 --> 00:16:38.240
Uh gotta pick up this over time.
00:17:11.279 --> 00:17:12.400
Got my overtime at it.
00:17:12.480 --> 00:17:36.480
Anyways, so yeah, like the yoga's helped me like look inside and it's helping me understand why I have issues with people because it's it ultimately an issue within myself, because those people are being themselves.
00:17:36.640 --> 00:18:16.480
And if you put yourself in the in their shoes and you can level set, even if they don't do that for you, if you can get an understanding of what they understand and how they view life, you then can understand why you get the responses, and if you can understand what you do to contribute to the responses, and you let go of doing things for a response, it's no once you do it, it's done, and whatever comes back comes back, but not trying to dictate the response, you know what I mean?
00:18:16.559 --> 00:18:32.559
Not putting the cart before the horse, not making your not saying words and then those words equaling actions, it's having actions first, you know what I mean?
00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:38.880
Like leading with your actions and then using the words to support your actions.
00:18:39.920 --> 00:18:58.799
And honestly, if you want to take an analytical approach to life, look at the connections between people's actions and their words, and that can help you level set and understand their perspective.
00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:02.640
Because if you watch their actions, don't listen to shit they say.
00:19:03.759 --> 00:19:06.160
Excuse me, I forgot I'm gonna stop cursing.
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:17.519
If you don't listen, just don't listen to anything that they say and just watch what they do and watch what they do with you, their interactions with you.
00:19:18.160 --> 00:19:19.359
Hear the words, right?
00:19:19.519 --> 00:19:20.000
Whatever.
00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:23.440
But the actions tell you exactly who somebody is.
00:19:25.759 --> 00:19:33.359
And then the disconnect between their words and their actions, that's the disconnect.
00:19:33.519 --> 00:19:41.839
That same delta is what you need to understand when they give you words.
00:19:44.880 --> 00:19:46.960
Look for the consistency, the trends.
00:19:47.039 --> 00:19:48.799
We're man, we all, everything's in cycles.
00:19:48.960 --> 00:19:50.160
Life works in cycles.
00:19:50.319 --> 00:19:55.839
I look at my life right now and I see just the different cycles, the different evolutionary phases of my life.
00:19:56.000 --> 00:20:00.559
And I go, oh, that's it's cyclical, that's crazy, but that makes sense.
00:20:00.799 --> 00:20:06.799
Hold on, I gotta do something about this camera because that that's probably a terrible picture.
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:08.880
Let's stop tracking.
00:20:09.759 --> 00:20:11.200
Almost got a half-body.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:42.480
But yeah, everything's inside of you, and if all of us start to look inside of ourselves for the answers, we can actually meet up together in community.
00:20:42.799 --> 00:20:44.319
Oh, another thing, man.
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:48.319
I I I don't know if y'all know, I'm kind of off of sports.
00:20:48.480 --> 00:20:54.559
Uh, I just canceled my YouTube TV yesterday um because I've been meaning to cancel it for a while.
00:20:54.640 --> 00:20:57.599
Now what can't and I said I was gonna cancel it in the offseason.
00:20:57.759 --> 00:21:02.640
And then with my work schedule, I work on Sundays, so I don't watch football on Sundays.
00:21:02.720 --> 00:21:07.759
I'm fairly busy on Saturdays and resting and doing whatever I choose to do.
00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:18.559
But nonetheless, it's a um for$82.99 a month, I don't watch enough YouTube TV.
00:21:20.079 --> 00:21:27.920
And if watching a football game is that important to me, I'll just go to my mom's house and watch it because they got cable, they're gonna keep cable.
00:21:28.720 --> 00:21:39.599
And that forces me to bond with my grandmom and my mom if I want to watch football, and that creates a new dynamic for us because I I don't really watch football with my mom, she's not a big football fan.
00:21:39.759 --> 00:21:43.839
Uh, and I watch football with my grandmama, and it's actually really cool.
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:47.279
So it's like, okay, this is how I watch football now.
00:21:47.680 --> 00:21:50.799
Again, accepting the the reactions to your actions.
00:21:50.960 --> 00:21:59.759
But in saying that, seeing how all of these teams in football are are reacting, uh leading up to the trade.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:04.559
Deadline now that they understand that they're not gonna compete, they start moving the players around.
00:22:04.640 --> 00:22:07.920
And I go, dude, like the Colts thing is what really got me.
00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:12.000
Like seeing the Quentin Nelson and Jonathan Taylor maybe on the on the move.
00:22:12.160 --> 00:22:14.799
I'm like, and they already moved Zaire Franklin.
00:22:15.039 --> 00:22:20.160
And I'm like, yo, this is this is really like the modern day slave trade.
00:22:20.319 --> 00:22:25.359
I mean, yeah, they get more money, but you have no control over where you work.
00:22:25.440 --> 00:22:27.119
It's like, hey, we traded you.
00:22:27.279 --> 00:22:29.279
Oh, I mean, slave trade, play, trade.
00:22:29.680 --> 00:22:31.839
Then you go, it's labor, right?
00:22:33.599 --> 00:22:44.960
It's exploited labor, yes, highly paid labor, but the billions that are made off of their backs in the other industries, they they don't get to touch that.
00:22:45.039 --> 00:22:48.400
Like they fuel so many different industries, and I go, wow.
00:22:49.519 --> 00:22:58.000
And then it's like now with these trade markets, you can trade on whether or not players will move.
00:22:58.079 --> 00:23:01.200
And I'm like, wow, that's another way to make money off of them.
00:23:01.519 --> 00:23:07.039
And obviously, some of them, like LeBron, have the deals, but conversation for another day.
00:23:07.680 --> 00:23:12.960
And then you go, these media accounts clip this stuff up and they make money off of them.
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:30.880
And then now you got like the girlfriends going viral and the wives going viral when they say stuff and they get podcasts, and you go, Wow, that is a lot of revenue streams generated off of football.
00:23:31.680 --> 00:23:37.759
And then sometimes you want to blame the players, or some of us want to blame the players because they don't take a stance.
00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:39.759
And I go, well, ha ha ha ha.
00:23:40.160 --> 00:23:42.880
From your perspective, it's easy to take a stance.
00:23:42.960 --> 00:23:46.480
But when you've dedicated your life to doing something, it's what you love.
00:23:47.519 --> 00:24:04.480
You may not be aware of it, or you may not have the understanding to truly grasp it because you were busy becoming this warrior, this football player, this athlete, that you didn't have time to understand the markets around it and how you're being exploited.
00:24:04.720 --> 00:24:21.359
Or, or even worse, you get so deep in that your taste, you increase your taste, and you're now bought into this mega corporation.
00:24:21.839 --> 00:24:24.160
So your livelihood is tied to it.
00:24:24.400 --> 00:24:28.960
So in order to get free from it, you have to cut your leg off.
00:24:30.079 --> 00:24:32.400
And everyone's not gonna cut their leg off.
00:24:32.480 --> 00:24:42.640
And everyone's not, I don't I don't really use right or wrong, but I don't blame everyone for not cutting their leg off because we all want different things out of life.
00:24:42.799 --> 00:24:44.480
We all view things differently.
00:24:44.640 --> 00:24:56.400
Now, don't get me wrong, that doesn't make me want to try to better educate those people and help create systems in which they don't have to cut their legs off, they're just cutting the shackle off.
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:06.960
They're freeing themselves from a shackle with a key instead of cutting the leg off to take their shackle off because I want you to dance, right?
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:10.799
And when you take the shackles off, you're supposed to dance, not limp.
00:25:12.799 --> 00:25:17.200
You know, now if you're limping, you're still free, but I want you to run.
00:25:17.279 --> 00:25:18.640
I actually want you to dance.
00:25:18.720 --> 00:25:19.440
You know what I mean?
00:25:19.519 --> 00:25:21.039
Shout out to Mary Mary.
00:25:21.519 --> 00:25:36.160
Um, so, anyways, that was an aside, but it's just really interesting to see how it was once a game, it was fun, it was entertainment.
00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:40.559
It was like, hey, we can make money off of this, we can make an industry out of it.
00:25:40.880 --> 00:25:41.519
Boom.
00:25:44.720 --> 00:25:49.839
Then it no longer becomes an industry about the thing.
00:25:50.319 --> 00:25:57.359
The thing just is the pump for all of this money.
00:25:58.799 --> 00:26:09.519
And then a society where we are consumed with money, money's in our face, consumption's in our face, we think going to get money is okay, and making money is okay.
00:26:13.039 --> 00:26:18.000
But I ask you, do you want to make money or make wealth?
00:26:18.960 --> 00:26:21.440
Do you want to make money or do you want to make institutions?
00:26:23.680 --> 00:26:36.480
Because a great scholar, thinker, his book two, maybe up here, said how can you in order to create a nation, you must be able to feed it.
00:26:38.960 --> 00:26:51.920
So after I've gotten back in touch with the earth and started stripping a lot of the fat from my life, from my body, from my mind, my consumption.
00:26:52.079 --> 00:27:02.160
Like, dog, I had a conversation with the doctor today, and it's like, dang, I gotta strip this out of my diet, strip this out of my diet, because I don't want to be on any type of medication long term.
00:27:02.240 --> 00:27:13.279
And in order for me to be get off of this GERD medication just for my indigestion, I have to dramatically change my diet and some other habits too.
00:27:13.440 --> 00:27:21.279
And it's like, oh, I've always wanted to get rid of these things, and again, it tie that knot together, again, working through your trauma actively.
00:27:21.759 --> 00:27:33.119
Um, it's a great thing, but I totally lost my train of thought, sorry y'all.
00:27:33.279 --> 00:27:35.920
Uh, these are all rough drafts, right?
00:27:39.599 --> 00:27:44.720
But in breaking your chains, man, it's important.
00:27:47.680 --> 00:28:00.960
That's why it's important to break your chains because some of the chains that I'm attached to, some of the shackles that had me down had me lose my train of thought because again, I didn't have total ownership of I don't have total ownership of myself.
00:28:02.480 --> 00:28:03.759
Working on it though.
00:28:04.960 --> 00:28:06.400
I'm working on it.
00:28:07.839 --> 00:28:11.680
So, yeah, I hope you found something profound in this.
00:28:12.720 --> 00:28:30.480
Uh because I I definitely find something profound in daily, unpacking trauma and getting behind the whys of things, and just seeing uh how multiple things can be true at the same time.
00:28:30.640 --> 00:28:32.720
Sports can be a great thing to watch.
00:28:32.960 --> 00:28:50.720
Uh, the athletes can be creating wealth for themselves and their families, uh, while also building wealth for a system that is against them, and doing this at their detriment and giving up their freedoms for this opportunity uh for wealth.
00:28:50.880 --> 00:28:56.640
And it can be good, it can be bad, it just depends on which lens you view it through.
