אודות פרק זה
This week on The Briefing, we look at the deluge of stories about impending war and the need to stockpile essentials, From Britain’s preparations for conflict, to Sky’s new The Wargame, which puts Michael Gove and Nicola Sturgeon into a fictional government responding to a Russian attack, the media is increasingly asking us to imagine war not as a distant possibility, but as a reality Europe must prepare for.
It is tempting to see this simply as public relations: governments, militaries and media organisations manufacturing a sense of threat in order to build support for rearmament. But something more fundamental is changing in the international system. The post-Cold War assumption that Europe could remain a relatively secure and insulated space - economically integrated, protected by American power and largely removed from great-power conflict - is breaking down. We discuss why the left needs to take the transformation seriously.
As ever, we will be back on Wednesday for The Exchange.
