00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:06.879
The teaching text for today is from Mark 12, verses 13 through 17.
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:13.679
It says, Later than uh they sent some Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.
00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:18.160
They came to him and said, Teacher, we know that you're a man of integrity.
00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:21.760
You aren't swayed by others because you pay no attention to who they are.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.719
But you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:29.920
Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
00:00:30.399 --> 00:00:32.479
Should we pay or shouldn't we?
00:00:32.719 --> 00:00:34.719
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy.
00:00:35.039 --> 00:00:36.399
Why are you trying to trap me?
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:37.119
He asked.
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:39.840
Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.
00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:43.600
So they brought him a coin and he asked them, Whose image is this?
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:45.280
And whose inscription?
00:00:45.759 --> 00:00:47.759
Caesar's, they replied.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:52.799
Then Jesus said to them, Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God and what is God's.
00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:54.640
And they were amazed at him.
00:00:55.280 --> 00:00:56.799
This is the word of the Lord.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:18.319
On Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, Charlie Kirk, an American political activist and entrepreneur, was shot and killed at an event held by his organization Turning Point.
00:01:18.959 --> 00:01:29.920
Shortly thereafter, some people with evil in their hearts began celebrating the death of an image bearer, a husband, and a father of two.
00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:32.719
Others began to mourn.
00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:41.359
And then, as it normally happens, what followed was a mass of debates and arguments on both sides.
00:01:42.239 --> 00:02:02.640
And then somewhere along the way, there developed an idea and a call to church and to church people that if your church or your pastor did not talk about Charlie Kirk and the church service from the stage or from the pulpit, that you should get up in the middle of that service and you should leave.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:18.639
So a couple days later on set on Sunday, September 14th, people began leaving churches in the middle of service or leaving churches altogether because the name of Charlie Kirk wasn't spoken from the pulpit.
00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:22.400
Now, this is very, very important.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:29.439
They did not leave because Jesus wasn't preached or worshipped.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:36.400
They did not leave because the preacher was a false prophet, bringing a false gospel the way that scriptures tell us to do that, if that's true.
00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:41.199
They didn't leave because Jesus' death and resurrection wasn't talked about.
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:46.960
They left because another man's death and name wasn't preached and talked about.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:54.560
And in so doing, they rendered unto Caesar that which was God's.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:02.960
They gave an allegiance and they gave a loyalty and they gave a boldness to Caesar that only belongs to God.
00:03:04.639 --> 00:03:16.000
So we live in a time where the church wrestles to understand in the West, here.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:25.520
It wrestles to understand and live obediently to what Jesus says in this passage, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and to God that which is God's.
00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:49.840
And so today, as we continue our series, He is Good, looking at Mark's gospel, what I want to do is I want to give you some background about what's actually taking place in this particular text, what's happening in this time in history, and then I want to look at what we can learn from what Jesus actually says, the answer that he gives, because the answer that he gives isn't just for these people.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.960
It's universally true and it still applies to us today, maybe more today than it did in the past.
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:07.199
So I want to look at what we can learn from what Jesus says, and then I want to look at the challenges that we face, that me and you face within the church to try and figure out how to actually live obediently to this brilliant thing that Jesus tells us to do.
00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:15.840
So what we can learn, background, what we can learn from Jesus, and then the challenge that we will face and that we actively do face in this nation, trying to follow Jesus obediently.
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.040
So, everybody good with that?
00:04:17.199 --> 00:04:18.319
Background learning things?
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:19.519
Okay, great.
00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:22.079
Background.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:24.720
This is a long quote, but it sums it up pretty good.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:29.279
Mark Strauss in his commentary just gives us three paragraphs that sums up everything that's taking place.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:31.600
This is what he says about the tax in this question.
00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:41.839
He says, Archelius, the son of Herod the Great, the Tetrarch of Judea, mentioned in Matthew 2, he was removed and exiled by Caesar Augustus because of his misrule.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:58.959
And so the Jews of Judea were now, at this point during this conversation, were under Roman rule, uh, ruled by and governed by a Roman prefect under the authority of the emperor, and because of that, they were required to pay into a tax into the fiscus or the emperor's treasury.
00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:02.720
Because they're under Roman rule, they do not rule themselves, they have to pay a tax.
00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:04.720
This imposition of the poll tax.
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:09.600
In 86, it sparked a revolt led by Judas the Galilean.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:14.720
And notice what he said, he chided his countrymen for paying tribute to the Romans rather than to God alone.
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.120
Do not render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:18.639
That's what he's saying.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:25.839
The revolt was quickly put down, but the tax remained highly unpopular among patriotic Jews.
00:05:26.079 --> 00:05:29.680
The coin would have been stamped with an image of Tiberius Caesar.
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:32.480
I believe we have an image, Colin, if you want to go to it.
00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:43.360
The coin would have been stamped with an image of Tiberius Caesar who ruled Rome from AD 14 to 37, and it would have had the words on it, uh, son of the divine Augustus.
00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:55.839
And so such a coin would have been highly offensive to pious Jews because it bore an idolatrous image and extolled the emperor as a god, and so the coin itself violated the first and second of the Ten Commandments.
00:05:55.920 --> 00:05:57.360
And so they would have hated the coin.
00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:03.279
Many of them wouldn't even touch the coin, hold the coin, use the coin because it was so offensive to them.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:05.120
Not supposed to have idols.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:14.160
And so on, uh Strauss continues and he says, So, some Jews, for example, the zealots, they just flatly refused to pay it.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:15.040
We will not pay it.
00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:20.879
And they were revolutionaries and they were revolting because it was for them an admission to the Roman right to rule.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:23.439
If I pay you this, that means that you do rule me.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:26.160
And they were actually ruling them, and so they wouldn't pay it.
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:33.680
The Pharisees, in this discussion, they disliked paying it for the reasons stated above, but they didn't actively oppose it.
00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.480
And then the Herodians had no objections to it.
00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:37.120
They loved it.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:42.240
Since the Herodian dynasty was ruling in Galilee under the authority of the Romans.
00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:45.199
And so the Romans were empowering the Herodians, and they're like, we don't care.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:48.879
Pay them whatever they want, as long as we stay in power, who cares if they're in power?
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:56.480
And so the intent of the question posed to Jesus was to force him to identify himself either with the zealots or with the Herodians.
00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:02.879
If he sided with the zealots against taxation, he would be accused of rebellion against the Roman authorities.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:13.199
If he sided with the Herodians in support of the taxation, he would lose faith with the people who hated Roman rule, and then they were suffering under its crushing tax burden.
00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:15.120
And so that's what's taking place here.
00:07:15.279 --> 00:07:16.560
That's why they're asking this question.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:17.839
It is a hypocritical thing.
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:18.720
They're trying to catch him.
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:20.079
They don't actually care.
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:24.879
But they're asking him, trying to trap him and put him, are you with the zealots, are you with the Herodians?
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:29.920
Are you trying to lead a revolution or are you just good with Roman rule and you're actually okay with the pagans?
00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:30.399
Which one?
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:32.959
And Jesus answers really, really well.
00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:34.399
He doesn't fall into their trap.
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:39.199
And he actually answers in such a way, give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, give unto God that which is God's.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:43.279
He answers in such a way that at the end of this passage, it says everyone was amazed.
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:47.600
Even the people that came to trap him, they're like, This guy, he's brilliant.
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:49.439
Like we just cannot seem.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:51.439
Eventually, we're gonna get to the point that keep asking them questions.
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:53.600
They're eventually getting to the point where we're like, stop asking them questions.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:57.040
Every time we ask them a question to trap them, it gets better and better and better for him.
00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:58.959
Like we just gotta stop asking them questions.
00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:02.000
And so they're stunned and amazed by what Jesus says.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:06.240
And now I want to look at that's the background, and now I want to look at what Jesus actually says.
00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:09.439
What do we learn from Jesus' answer?
00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:14.079
And so the first thing he says, he says, give back to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:15.839
Give back to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:26.560
And so what he's seeking to say is that give to the governing authorities that rule you, give to the governing authorities things that do not go against what God says.
00:08:26.800 --> 00:08:28.560
That's basically what he's saying.
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:37.360
So Mark Strauss in his commentary again says, Jesus affirmed that Caesar has a legitimate claim, but then so does God.
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:40.240
So give to each his rightful claim.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:45.279
So long as God's rights were safeguarded, there was no need to question the rights of Caesar.
00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:51.759
Civil obedience, attested by paying the tax, no more contradicts or abolishes obedience due to God.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:54.559
And so paying the tax doesn't make you disobedient to God.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:56.080
And so don't worry about it.
00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:07.279
And so follow and be lawfully obedient to the things that your Caesar, your governing bodies, be lawfully obedient to those things, unless they defy God, unless they get in the way of those things.
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:14.000
And then faithfully choose to follow God and defy your government, where it actually leads you to be disobedient to God.
00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:19.679
But if it doesn't force you into disobedience, walk faithfully with God, giving unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:31.200
Paul says this in Romans 13, writing to Christians in Rome under the Emperor Nero, who's lighting Christians on fire and using them as candles for his dinner parties.
00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:35.440
He's writing this to them and what they're actively doing.
00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:40.559
He's in prison and in certain in Rome, and then he's writing this particular thing.
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:44.000
And so he says, Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:45.840
Again, who is the governing authority?
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:47.840
Nero, lighting Christians on fire.
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.159
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:53.919
For there is no authority except that which God has established.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:57.120
The authorities that exist have been established by God.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:03.360
Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted.
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:06.080
And those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:13.840
Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:20.639
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants who give their full time to governing.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:22.960
Give to everyone what you owe them.
00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:24.960
If you owe taxes, pay taxes.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:26.480
If revenue, then revenue.
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:28.080
If respect, then respect.
00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:29.759
If honor, then honor.
00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:38.240
And so these things, all of that stuff, the taxes, the revenue, the respect, the honor, those things don't lead you into disobedience to the Ten Commandments.
00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:40.399
They don't lead you into disobedience away from God.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:49.120
And so because those things are required of you, but they're not leading you away from being obedient to God, you can give those things and render those things unto Caesar.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:50.639
And so that's what he's saying.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:11:06.559
Pete Gregg, in one of his books, I couldn't remember which book, but uh, he shared this story of a Christian community that did this really well and like navigated, rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, but also to God that which is God's.
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:15.039
So he talks about this particular uh church that existed back in the um early 1900s, or excuse me, 900s.
00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:26.159
He says, the fourth Fatimid Caliph, it was an Islamic extremist leader of the Fatimid dynasty, ruled from 1953 to 1975 in Egypt.
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:38.799
And so when persecuting the church, he once, the the caliph, once issued a decree to close all churches, all of the churches of the Coptic Christian community in the land, and then forbid the church bells to ring.
00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:44.080
Capital punishment threatened anyone who dared to meet in a church or even open a church.
00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:47.600
And so for nine long years, the churches were closed.
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:51.519
The gates grew rusty, and the pigeons took residence in their sanctuaries.
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:56.559
Some Christians traveled across the desert seeking monasteries in the wilderness so that they could meet for prayer and worship.
00:11:56.720 --> 00:12:04.159
However, the majority of them could not afford the time to travel on foot across the desert, so they were forced to stay in their homes on Sundays.
00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:14.720
Now, before you go to the next slide, Colin, at this point, if you just, if that's what you hear about a church, the government said you can't meet in your church buildings, you can't meet there and worship.
00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:16.559
And then they obeyed that.
00:12:16.799 --> 00:12:22.320
It looks like they have rendered unto Caesar way too much power, way too much authority.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:32.799
They should have pushed back, they should have just continued to meet in the churches and just dealt with the persecution that they deal with because they're supposed to render unto God that which is God, and Caesar has told them they can't meet anymore.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:38.320
And so it looks like from the start, nine years, they've just rendered unto Caesar way too much power.
00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:39.679
But that's not the story.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:40.799
It goes on.
00:12:41.039 --> 00:12:49.360
And Pete says, After nine years, the Caliph decided to see for himself how crushed and silenced the Coptic Christians were now.
00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:55.120
So in disguise he set out on a Sunday and walked in the streets of their quarters in old Cairo.
00:12:55.200 --> 00:13:03.039
And what he heard was the sound of their prayers, Bible readings, and worship from every house that he passed by.
00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:08.480
His reaction was another decree open their church buildings and let them pray as they please.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:14.000
I thought I'd close the church in every street, only to find that I've opened a church in every house.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:24.240
And what I love about it is how threading the needle this is, because it seemed like render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:25.600
You can have our church building.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:26.159
Fine.
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:29.360
You can have our church building, but you can't take our worship.
00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:32.879
And it's this perfect way of looking at like what Jesus is saying.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:42.000
It was like, look, everybody, I mean, we walked through this thing that was COVID, and people had issues with the buildings closing and the mask that we had to wear and all these different things.
00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:50.639
And it's like, those things aren't hindering your worship of Jesus because it doesn't happen in a specific building or it's not hindered by a mask in front of your face.
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:52.399
It doesn't do any of those things.
00:13:52.559 --> 00:13:55.279
And I don't actually care what you believe about masks or buildings.
00:13:55.360 --> 00:14:09.440
I'm just saying there's a there's something here that I think is important for us to understand that there are spaces that Jesus is saying, if it does not lead you into active disobedience to God, then just be the best citizen you can possibly be.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:12.879
Because at the end of the day, that's what he's calling us to be.
00:14:14.480 --> 00:14:14.879
C.B.
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:18.559
Cranfield says this Jesus is indicating God's rights are to be honored.
00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:21.600
And there's no doubt about that, God's rights must be honored.
00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:28.000
But that there are obligations to Caesar which do not infringe your rights to God, but are indeed ordained by God.
00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:32.720
There are obligations to Caesar which do not infringe the rights of God.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:34.159
They're ordained by him.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:50.320
And so even if we disagree, even if we don't like the leader or the governing body that's leading us, so long as they don't lead you into disobedience to Jesus, Jesus is saying, then subject yourself to that leading.
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:52.639
Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:54.159
That's the first thing he says.
00:14:54.320 --> 00:14:58.480
Then he says, Render unto God, give to God what is God's.
00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:08.240
And this is most likely a command, or at least he's referencing a command to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:10.159
He's it's it's all encapsulating.
00:15:10.240 --> 00:15:11.519
What do we, what is God's?
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:12.960
It's like, well, everything is God's.
00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:14.720
And Caesar was created by God.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:16.559
And so what are we supposed to render unto him?
00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:18.240
It's like honestly, everything.
00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:22.159
And his point is God gets our first and he gets our most.
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:24.000
He gets first and he gets most.
00:15:24.080 --> 00:15:28.639
And so our heart is his before we should ever give it to Caesar.
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:35.440
Our love, our hope, our devotion, our allegiance, all of those things are his first before they're anybody else's.
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:42.559
Our mind, all of our thinking, all of our attention, our strength, all of our time, all of our obedience, the things that we're doing.
00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:44.879
What who do those things belong to first and most?
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:48.159
Those things belong first and most to God and to him himself.
00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:50.720
And so he gets those things first and most.
00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:54.080
He gets our full obedience, he gets our full allegiance.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:16:03.279
Even when we disagree with him, with God, he's like, yeah, when when the when the government leads you to be disobedient to me, then don't listen to the government.
00:16:03.440 --> 00:16:08.559
But when I lead you to be disobedient to the government, be obedient to me and be disobedient to the government.
00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:10.240
Because I get first and most.
00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:12.000
And that's what he's saying.
00:16:12.320 --> 00:16:20.799
Even when we disagree, even when the practices of the government are leading us into spaces that are negative, we're supposed to give our full allegiance and full obedience to God.
00:16:20.960 --> 00:16:29.039
The early church, I mean, you'll know this, the the persecuted church is actively having to do this in many ways, but the early church had to practice this under Roman rule.
00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:34.480
They had to practice this thing of like giving to God that which is God's and not giving to Caesar that which is God's.
00:16:34.639 --> 00:16:38.240
And so Bruce Shelley in his book on church history says this.
00:16:38.720 --> 00:16:52.320
He says, On a certain day in the Roman world, uh, on a certain day in the year, every Roman citizen had to come to the temple of Caesar and burn a pinch of incense there and then say the words, Caesar is Lord.
00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:56.000
And when he had done that, he could really go away and worship any God he liked.
00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:56.799
They didn't care.
00:16:57.039 --> 00:17:01.919
Thus, to the Roman, the Christians seemed utterly intolerant and insanely stubborn.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:09.440
Had the Christians just been willing to burn the pinch of incense and say formally, Caesar is Lord, they could have gone on worshiping Jesus to their heart's content.
00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:12.079
But notice, the Christians would not compromise.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:13.920
They were like, I don't care.
00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:16.079
Anyways, I'm gonna keep going.
00:17:16.240 --> 00:17:22.960
That is, that is why the Roman, the uh Rome regarded them as a band of potential revolutionaries threatening the very existence of their empire.
00:17:23.119 --> 00:17:28.079
But these people looked at these Christians and are like, just burn, we don't think he's God either.
00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:28.960
He's dead.
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:33.759
Like, we don't we don't think that he'll just burn the incense and say the words and nobody cares.
00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:38.799
And they were like, we will not, we will not render unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:17:38.960 --> 00:17:39.680
We just won't.
00:17:39.839 --> 00:17:44.240
And so I don't care if it's incense or words or whatever, I'm not gonna shift on this.
00:17:45.759 --> 00:17:50.720
They would not render to Caesar what was God's alone, even when it went against the governing authorities.
00:17:50.799 --> 00:17:58.640
They were compellingly defiant in those ways against the government for the sake of God and for the sake of Jesus in his name.
00:17:59.519 --> 00:18:01.440
And so that's what we're called to as well.
00:18:01.680 --> 00:18:08.319
If the government is seeking to lead us into disobedience to God, then it's like, I'm so sorry, I have to step back, and I cannot be obedient to that.
00:18:09.039 --> 00:18:20.000
When we disagree, when it's pushing us into something that we disagree with, but it is also very true, and it's not the world that they lived in, but it's the world that we live in.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:25.920
We live in a time where we actually put people in power based on our own votes.
00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:36.480
And so this is also true the other way, that God should still get our full obedience and our full allegiance, even when we voted for the person in power.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:42.640
If they do something, and we vote, we like them, we voted for them, we're so we celebrated when they won or whatever.
00:18:42.720 --> 00:18:44.400
We like, we we we're so glad.
00:18:44.559 --> 00:18:54.160
But if they do something against the scriptures or lead you to go and do something against the scriptures, even though you voted for them, you must render unto God that which is God's.
00:18:54.400 --> 00:19:00.880
And you have to push back, and you you are not supposed to just go, well, I voted for them, so I guess anything they do is right.
00:19:01.200 --> 00:19:03.359
No, that's not true.
00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:16.400
Even in the case where the leader is someone that you wanted to be in charge, you were not to support them when they're doing things that are anti-biblical or against the scriptures, because you cannot render unto them that which belongs to God.
00:19:16.559 --> 00:19:20.240
And he gets our full obedience, he gets our full allegiance.
00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:34.960
And if we went along with people who were doing wrong things even though we like them, if we go along with them, even though we like them, but they're doing something wrong, we are justifying something that is against the scriptures, and that's not right.
00:19:35.039 --> 00:19:36.079
That's called sin.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:40.799
We cannot justify sin just because we like the person in office.
00:19:41.200 --> 00:19:44.079
And so Jesus is saying our fullest allegiance is to God.
00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:46.480
And so we don't render to anyone unconditional trust.
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:52.079
We don't render to anyone other than Jesus unconditional trust, unconditional allegiance, unconditional obedience.
00:19:52.160 --> 00:19:55.119
That belongs to God, and so we can't give it to anybody else.
00:19:59.119 --> 00:19:59.680
All right.
00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:20.720
When we give to Caesar that which belongs to God, um, or we don't give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar because we don't like Caesar.
00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:22.640
Both those things are wrong.
00:20:22.960 --> 00:20:27.680
And so places where I've just seen this, notice this, been at this for a minute.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:43.279
When we don't like Caesar, when we don't like Caesar, or the government, when we don't like them, the struggle that we have and the challenge we face is many people refuse to be obedient to God by giving to Caesar that which is Caesar's because we don't like Caesar.
00:20:43.440 --> 00:20:50.079
Caesar's the worst, and so I'm not gonna give him what he is is supposed to receive because I don't like Caesar.
00:20:50.240 --> 00:20:54.480
And so, for instance, Romans 13, Paul says, Everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:20:54.640 --> 00:20:55.680
Don't rebel.
00:20:56.079 --> 00:21:00.720
Um, you know, pay taxes, revenue, pay respect, pay honor.
00:21:01.039 --> 00:21:03.039
And then it's like, I don't want to give them honor.
00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:04.160
They don't deserve my honor.
00:21:04.240 --> 00:21:06.000
And it's like, that's not why you give it.
00:21:06.160 --> 00:21:08.720
You don't give honor because Caesar deserves honor.
00:21:08.799 --> 00:21:12.480
You give honor because God demands that you give honor to Caesar.
00:21:12.720 --> 00:21:15.839
And if he's saying it, then you're supposed to render unto God that which is God's.
00:21:15.920 --> 00:21:19.279
And you're supposed to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's because God said to do that.
00:21:19.440 --> 00:21:20.559
And so it's never been about.
00:21:20.720 --> 00:21:22.400
Well, they don't deserve my respect.
00:21:22.720 --> 00:21:25.440
Like, true, they probably don't.
00:21:25.680 --> 00:21:27.440
Or at least not all the time.
00:21:28.400 --> 00:21:30.240
But you're not doing it because they deserve it.
00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:32.559
Paul also says that you're supposed to pray for them.
00:21:32.799 --> 00:21:38.640
He writes this to Timothy again in prison, writing to Timothy about Nero and about the governing authorities.
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:52.000
He says, I urge you, first of all, that prayers and petitions and intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:59.759
This is good, and this pleases God, our Savior, who wants all people, even our governing bodies, to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.400
Truth.
00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:02.880
And so Paul says it pleases God.
00:22:03.039 --> 00:22:03.519
It's good.
00:22:03.680 --> 00:22:09.039
When you do those things, it pleases him that you're doing that because you're not doing it unto them or for them.
00:22:09.119 --> 00:22:10.559
You're doing it because he's asked you to.
00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:12.319
And you're like, I don't want to pray for them.
00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:13.119
I don't like them.
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:15.200
And he's like, but you're not doing it because of them.
00:22:15.440 --> 00:22:17.039
It also says thankfulness.
00:22:17.119 --> 00:22:25.279
And so it forces you, even if you don't like the person in office or the governing body, it forces you to go, like, I have to find something to be thankful for.
00:22:25.599 --> 00:22:27.759
Ah, I don't want to.
00:22:27.920 --> 00:22:30.720
And it's like, but you're not doing it for them.
00:22:30.799 --> 00:22:32.240
You're doing it for him.
00:22:33.279 --> 00:22:36.000
And some of you out there are like, are we supposed to do that for Hitler too?
00:22:36.079 --> 00:22:37.200
I know you guys are thinking about Hitler.
00:22:37.279 --> 00:22:38.559
Everybody's always thinking about Hitler.
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:41.440
Are there exceptions to this rule?
00:22:41.519 --> 00:22:42.559
Why are you looking for an exception?
00:22:42.640 --> 00:22:44.079
Just read the scriptures.
00:22:45.759 --> 00:22:49.680
And probably there's something there, but we that's not here, so we're not going to talk about that.
00:22:51.759 --> 00:22:59.680
But again, it's important to know Paul's in prison under Nero, lighting Christians on fire and using them for dinner party candles.
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:06.160
And their screams are drowning out, you know, drowned out by drums and music and all the different things at his dinner parties.
00:23:06.400 --> 00:23:12.559
It's hard to do these things when they don't deserve it, but the truth is you're not doing it because they deserve it.
00:23:12.640 --> 00:23:15.119
You're doing it because God has said, give unto God that which is God's.
00:23:15.200 --> 00:23:17.920
And God has said, give unto Caesar that which is his.
00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:27.119
And you are to do that even when you don't like them, respect them, give it to them anyways, because you're not doing it for them, you're doing it for God Himself.
00:23:27.599 --> 00:23:29.279
And so that's one challenge.
00:23:29.519 --> 00:23:37.759
When we don't like the governing bodies, when we don't like them, we struggle to be obedient to God because it's hard to give to Caesar that which is Caesar's because we don't like Caesar.
00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:39.119
That is one struggle.
00:23:39.279 --> 00:23:41.599
And I would say that's the minor one.
00:23:41.920 --> 00:24:00.400
The biggest struggle that I've noticed in the church, the biggest challenge, the greater challenge, is when we actually do like the person, when we voted for them, when we put them in office, when we were excited that they're going to be leading our country or whatever, the greater challenge that we face as Christians is when we like them.
00:24:00.480 --> 00:24:08.240
And when that happens, the trap that we can fall into is to give to Caesar that which is God's instead of giving to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:13.920
We flip it and we mix it and we begin giving to Caesar that which is God's alone.
00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:23.279
So, for example, places where I've seen this, things like evangelism, we're supposed to be sharing about Jesus.
00:24:23.599 --> 00:24:27.279
That should be the name on our lips is supposed to be about Jesus.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.400
All the good that Jesus can do for us, everything that He's done.
00:24:30.559 --> 00:24:41.599
But many Christians share more about their president that they love, more about the politics that they believe in, and all the good news that their president, politician, or policies can do.
00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:47.119
They spend more time evangelizing the good news of their politician than they do about Jesus.
00:24:47.279 --> 00:24:54.000
They know more about their candidate and what their candidate can do for them than what Jesus can do for them, and that's on their lips a lot more.
00:24:54.160 --> 00:25:00.000
And when that happens, you have rendered your evangelism unto Caesar and not to Jesus.
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:04.880
Sacrifice, devotion, loyalty.
00:25:05.119 --> 00:25:09.440
We give that to Caesar when our officials are clearly doing something wrong.
00:25:09.599 --> 00:25:13.680
And instead of being honest about it and acknowledging it, we defend them.
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:15.119
We defend them.
00:25:15.359 --> 00:25:18.400
They're doing something that it's very clear in the scriptures.
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:21.039
They cannot do that's wrong.
00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:23.039
Like we cannot go about that.
00:25:24.400 --> 00:25:25.599
People defend them.
00:25:25.839 --> 00:25:27.279
And you've given something.
00:25:27.440 --> 00:25:34.799
There are plenty of people that don't like the way that God does things in the Bible, and we choose that and go, like, well, that's just their opinion of the scriptures.
00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:37.519
But we defend our politician more than we defend God.
00:25:38.960 --> 00:25:42.079
Somebody says something against Jesus, and it's like, ah, well, that's just their opinion.
00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:44.640
Someone says something against our president or the people that we like.
00:25:44.799 --> 00:25:48.640
We bow up, we fight online, we get in arguments, our families split over it.
00:25:48.799 --> 00:25:50.400
It's like, your families were only supposed to.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:54.240
Jesus said, I bring the sword, and the sword will be this thing that divides.
00:25:54.319 --> 00:25:56.559
Some people will choose me and some people won't choose me.
00:25:56.720 --> 00:25:58.880
And the reason, the only reason to divide.
00:25:59.119 --> 00:26:01.279
People are dividing over presidents.
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:05.759
We have rendered unto Caesar that which is C uh that which is God's.
00:26:05.920 --> 00:26:07.200
Apologetics.
00:26:07.519 --> 00:26:08.960
Apologetics.
00:26:09.359 --> 00:26:12.400
Giving a defense for something if you don't know what the word apologetics means.
00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:16.960
God calls us to be ready to give a defense for our faith, 1 Peter 3.15.
00:26:17.119 --> 00:26:24.720
But instead of having a defense of our faith and what we believe, we have a better defense of our political party and why we hold to that politically.
00:26:25.200 --> 00:26:31.920
We use those arguments and that we have a better apology for our policies and our politics than we do for Jesus.
00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:38.480
And we use those online in arguments, families, randos on the internet, we just use those against everybody.
00:26:38.720 --> 00:26:47.200
We can better defend why our political view and party is correct and why the other is wrong better than you can actually defend your own faith.
00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:52.880
You can defend why your policies of your particular candidates or whatever are better.
00:26:53.039 --> 00:26:55.920
You know more about them than you're able to actually defend your faith.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:00.400
And Christian, if that's you, you have rendered unto Caesar your apologetics.
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:05.680
You have rendered unto Caesar your ability to defend what actually only should be given to God.
00:27:05.920 --> 00:27:09.519
I don't care if you're able to tell me why this policy is better than this one.
00:27:09.680 --> 00:27:14.400
Can you actually go and talk to a Muslim about Jesus and why Jesus is the king that rules the universe?
00:27:14.480 --> 00:27:15.440
No, I can't do any of that.
00:27:15.519 --> 00:27:16.960
Then shut up about the other thing.
00:27:18.319 --> 00:27:19.200
Sorry.
00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:24.480
That other thing's not going to change the world.
00:27:33.680 --> 00:27:34.480
Attention.
00:27:39.440 --> 00:27:45.599
When we give more time and attention to the news, political debates.
00:27:46.640 --> 00:28:00.079
Political debates online than you do just a second.
00:28:08.240 --> 00:28:14.240
When we know more about politics and policy than we do about the scriptures.
00:28:14.880 --> 00:28:22.720
When we spend more time reading the news, watching the news, wherever you find your news, because it's everywhere and it's all the time.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:24.160
Spend more time doing that.
00:28:24.319 --> 00:28:26.880
You know, the Bible's with you 24-7 as well.
00:28:29.920 --> 00:28:33.680
Scripture, prayer, fellowship with other believers.
00:28:34.240 --> 00:28:38.799
You've rendered unto Caesar your time, your attention.
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:40.799
All of that should have been his.
00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:43.599
Discipleship.
00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:46.160
Worked in student ministry for a long time.
00:28:46.240 --> 00:28:47.920
It was very discouraging.
00:28:49.119 --> 00:28:59.920
When I had students in my ministry who knew more about presidential candidates and presidential policies than they did about Jesus, I was like, your parents have discipled you.
00:29:00.240 --> 00:29:03.039
They've just given their discipleship to politics.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:10.160
They've given their discipleship to Donald Trump or to Kamala Harris or to whoever's next.
00:29:10.480 --> 00:29:14.799
And they know a ton about things that are not eternal.
00:29:18.000 --> 00:29:21.759
They're disciples of presidents and not disciples of a king.
00:29:24.160 --> 00:29:26.160
Citizenship and identity.
00:29:26.640 --> 00:29:33.279
We're called to imitate Jesus, be formed into his image, to live as citizens of a kingdom, not of this world.
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:37.519
That means that our values should be Jesus' values, not the world's values.
00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:45.279
But when we act more American than we do Christian, you have rendered unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:29:45.519 --> 00:29:53.839
When you look more like the American dream than you do the dream that Jesus had of a church in Acts 2, where there's no one that has a need.
00:29:54.240 --> 00:29:55.759
Every bill is paid.
00:29:55.920 --> 00:29:59.519
All the food, everybody in that space has food to eat.
00:29:59.920 --> 00:30:07.920
But when our when you look more like the American dream than the dream that Jesus had in the life, you have rendered unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:30:08.720 --> 00:30:10.400
Our citizenship and our identity.
00:30:10.559 --> 00:30:12.559
We're supposed to be formed into his likeness.
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:15.440
We should always look a little different than the American dream.
00:30:15.680 --> 00:30:18.000
We should be oddly formed in that way.
00:30:18.079 --> 00:30:20.319
And they just look at us and be like, you don't really fit.
00:30:20.559 --> 00:30:22.799
It's like, I don't live here, man.
00:30:24.400 --> 00:30:26.000
Faith and hope.
00:30:26.400 --> 00:30:28.079
Jesus is the hope of the world.
00:30:28.240 --> 00:30:33.200
It's his kingdom coming into the world, his will being done in the world that is the answer to the world's problems.
00:30:33.440 --> 00:30:41.759
But when your beliefs and comments begin to shift and become, my politician is the hope of the world.
00:30:41.920 --> 00:30:45.200
My politician is the answer to the world's deepest problem.
00:30:45.440 --> 00:30:49.200
If we could just get this person in office, then we're really going to see the things going.
00:30:49.440 --> 00:30:55.279
It's like you have given that person or that particular group all of your faith and all of your hope.
00:30:55.440 --> 00:30:58.480
And you're talking about them as if they're the Messiah.
00:31:01.279 --> 00:31:02.720
The Great Commission.
00:31:04.640 --> 00:31:10.799
Jesus' commission for how to make the world more Christian was to go into the world.
00:31:10.960 --> 00:31:12.559
You want to make the world more Christian?
00:31:12.720 --> 00:31:14.799
Go into the world and make more Christians.
00:31:15.039 --> 00:31:18.400
We try to make the world more Christian through legislation.
00:31:19.440 --> 00:31:26.480
We're trying to create, we just need to get a Christian in office, which I'm all about Christians being in the political spheres.
00:31:26.640 --> 00:31:27.599
That's fine.
00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:31.359
We just need to get a Christian in office, and our nation will be Christian again.
00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:34.319
We're trying to legislate morality.
00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:36.160
We're trying to legislate the kingdom of God.
00:31:36.240 --> 00:31:39.039
And Jesus has already told us how to bring about the kingdom of God.
00:31:39.279 --> 00:31:44.640
The early church was not trying to make the world more Christian by legislation.
00:31:44.799 --> 00:31:50.960
They were trying to make the world more Christian by walking out and sharing the gospel and making more Christians because they were following the Great Commission.
00:31:51.200 --> 00:31:57.759
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to do everything that I've commanded them to do, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
00:31:57.839 --> 00:31:59.359
Like, and they just did that.
00:31:59.599 --> 00:32:05.920
Paul's not writing to the Roman Christians, like, just get Nero out of there and get one of you bad boys in there, and then we're really going to have something with Rome.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:10.640
Like he wasn't saying that, but he was trying to share the gospel with every single person that he knew.
00:32:10.960 --> 00:32:17.119
Because he knew the Great Commission in God's kingdom, morality in God's kingdom moves forward, not by legislating it.
00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:20.720
It's by actually doing what he calls us to do.
00:32:20.799 --> 00:32:25.920
And so we our Great Commission can't sound, if it doesn't sound like what Jesus said, go therefore and make disciples.
00:32:26.000 --> 00:32:31.599
If the Great Commission that we have, the Great American Commission is just get a Christian president in there and then the world's going to be saved.
00:32:31.759 --> 00:32:33.039
That's not the Great Commission.
00:32:34.400 --> 00:32:35.200
And again, I don't care.
00:32:35.359 --> 00:32:36.000
Like it's fine.
00:32:36.160 --> 00:32:37.039
I think those things are great.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:44.319
We have this ability to place people who have particular beliefs in those things, but he has told us, you want to advance the kingdom, you want it to rule the world and take the world.
00:32:44.480 --> 00:32:45.599
I've already told you how to do it.
00:32:45.759 --> 00:32:48.240
Go therefore and make disciples.
00:32:48.640 --> 00:32:51.680
Not go therefore and find a president that can make disciples.
00:32:51.920 --> 00:32:53.279
No, it's not that.
00:32:55.759 --> 00:33:09.839
When we mix these things, when we don't give Caesar what is Caesar's, or when we give to Caesar that which is God's, we shift from being Christians who live in America to Americans who call themselves Christian.
00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:16.960
Our primary formation is from the nation itself and not from Jesus.
00:33:19.279 --> 00:33:22.000
So implications for us.
00:33:23.519 --> 00:33:24.079
Just one.
00:33:24.559 --> 00:33:30.799
If you are a follower of Jesus, you will not fit neatly in any political party.
00:33:31.039 --> 00:33:36.079
The reason is because Jesus did not fit neatly with any political party.
00:33:36.240 --> 00:33:39.839
He didn't fit neatly with the conservatives, he didn't fit neatly with the liberals.
00:33:40.079 --> 00:33:42.000
And you see that in the text here.
00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:52.720
The liberal Herodians and the conservative Bible-thumping Pharisees, both of them came together not to worship Jesus, but to get rid of Jesus.
00:33:53.039 --> 00:33:57.440
He did not fit in either of their spheres of influence.
00:33:57.680 --> 00:34:01.599
Mark Strauss says, Herodians and Pharisees make strange bedfellows.
00:34:01.839 --> 00:34:04.799
Their association here automatically raises eyebrows.
00:34:04.960 --> 00:34:08.320
The Herodians were opposed to the Pharisees for sure on political grounds.
00:34:08.400 --> 00:34:18.800
While the Herodians, or excuse me, while the Herodians supported the pro-Roman Herodian dynasty, the Pharisees rejected any rule apart from the theocratic kingdom under a Davidic ruler.
00:34:19.039 --> 00:34:22.639
Yet the two groups were united in their opposition to Jesus.
00:34:22.880 --> 00:34:25.280
Neither of them liked Jesus all that much.
00:34:25.599 --> 00:34:27.119
They just didn't like him.
00:34:27.360 --> 00:34:29.440
He didn't align with them.
00:34:29.679 --> 00:34:35.360
And the Pharisees could have been like, come on, man, like you like that Herodians, they believe, I mean, they're pagans.
00:34:35.519 --> 00:34:37.440
Like at least we believe some of the Bible.
00:34:37.519 --> 00:34:38.400
Like, come on, man.
00:34:38.480 --> 00:34:39.519
Like you align with us.
00:34:39.599 --> 00:34:44.880
And he's like, I will not align with you that way, just because you believe some of the Bible.
00:34:45.440 --> 00:34:45.920
You're wrong.
00:34:46.079 --> 00:34:49.360
And the Herodians are like, come on, man, we're like super inclusive.
00:34:49.599 --> 00:34:51.039
We got all the power.
00:34:51.280 --> 00:34:52.880
Like, why don't you align with you?
00:34:53.039 --> 00:34:54.880
We could really do something, you know?
00:34:55.440 --> 00:34:58.000
And he's like, no, I won't align with that either.
00:34:58.639 --> 00:35:08.239
Pastor and author Rich Philodis says, if you are completely comfortable in any earthly political party, it is because you don't know who you are as a citizen in the kingdom of heaven.
00:35:08.480 --> 00:35:10.960
If you're completely comfortable, I'm all set.
00:35:11.519 --> 00:35:13.679
You don't know who you are in the kingdom of heaven.
00:35:13.920 --> 00:35:19.199
You shouldn't fit comfortably because your king does not and did not fit comfortably either.
00:35:19.360 --> 00:35:27.599
He pushed back on both sides because his allegiance was to the father and his father's kingdom and not to any empire or kingdom that can be built here.
00:35:29.679 --> 00:35:33.679
Tim Keller in 2005 said this.
00:35:33.840 --> 00:35:38.079
And so those of you who know the political sphere in 2005, he said this.
00:35:50.320 --> 00:35:59.039
Conservatives think the government should be, should control personal morality, but should leave people free to do whatever they choose with their money.
00:35:59.280 --> 00:36:08.000
Liberals, on the other hand, think the government should control and redistribute that money and income, but should leave people free to do whatever they choose in the area of personal morality.
00:36:08.320 --> 00:36:16.719
If you are more concerned about abortion, the changing sexual customs, and the severe secularization of the public square, you will tend to vote Republican.
00:36:16.880 --> 00:36:23.840
If you're more concerned about racial discrimination, marginalization of the poor, and the erosion of the environment, then you will tend to vote Democrat.
00:36:24.079 --> 00:36:30.000
Of course, the problem is that all of those things are concerns for anyone who reads and trusts the Bible.
00:36:30.159 --> 00:36:31.599
All of them matter.
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:35.519
Therefore, the two-party system does not serve Christians well.
00:36:35.679 --> 00:36:42.800
Currently, it virtually forces us to leave half of our faith at the door, either personal wholeness ethics, or social wholeness ethics.
00:36:42.880 --> 00:36:44.159
So what are we to do?
00:36:44.400 --> 00:36:48.320
And the answer is we should not idolize one party and demonize the other.
00:36:48.480 --> 00:36:50.559
And he goes on, it's a long article.
00:36:50.800 --> 00:36:58.880
But what are we to do in this space where one party forces us to divorce ourselves from something that we actually hold to if we hold to the scriptures?
00:36:59.039 --> 00:37:02.079
And then the other one just leaves that stuff out and says, divorce yourself from the other stuff.
00:37:02.159 --> 00:37:02.880
What are we to do?
00:37:03.119 --> 00:37:04.960
Don't make them Messiah.
00:37:05.280 --> 00:37:06.960
Don't make them Jesus.
00:37:07.199 --> 00:37:11.679
And don't follow them blindly into this space and be like, everything that they do is right or everything that they do is wrong.
00:37:11.760 --> 00:37:14.719
It's like, no, they're kind of hitting and missing here and there.
00:37:15.360 --> 00:37:16.960
But we're a part of a different kingdom.
00:37:17.039 --> 00:37:18.400
So what are we to do?
00:37:18.719 --> 00:37:20.880
I think Jesus tells us what to do.
00:37:21.119 --> 00:37:22.159
What are we to do?
00:37:22.320 --> 00:37:28.639
Whether you like Caesar or not, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, so long as it doesn't lead you to be disobedient to God.
00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:33.519
And then render unto God's that which is God's, that full obedience and full allegiance.
00:37:33.599 --> 00:37:40.239
And never, and where you find yourself, I have given him, I have given Caesar what belongs to God.
00:37:40.400 --> 00:37:42.159
Repent and turn back from that.
00:37:42.320 --> 00:37:43.840
Don't mix those two.
00:37:44.639 --> 00:37:54.960
Because if you do, you wind up being formed more into an American Christian than you are a Jesus following Christian, an actual Christian.
00:37:55.280 --> 00:37:56.800
And I think it's great to be American.
00:37:56.960 --> 00:38:05.199
Like there's so many things that I think we have, we're praying in the back for all the different spaces that the church is being just brutalized and people are, and so we have so much freedom here.
00:38:05.360 --> 00:38:05.920
I love that.
00:38:06.000 --> 00:38:07.760
I'm not saying anything against that.
00:38:10.960 --> 00:38:15.039
But we need to mind what Jesus is saying and seek to be obedient to this.
00:38:15.280 --> 00:38:17.280
He wants us to be salt and light into the world.
00:38:17.360 --> 00:38:25.599
And when even when we agree and love the person in power, if they do something wrong, it's still truth to power that we're able to speak very honestly.
00:38:25.840 --> 00:38:30.639
Because I'm not so aligned with this person that I have to baptize every single thing that they do.
00:38:31.039 --> 00:38:32.559
I'm a Jesus follower.
00:38:32.719 --> 00:38:35.119
And so that's wrong, and that's pretty good.
00:38:35.360 --> 00:38:38.960
And that's how that goes because that's what he was able to do.
00:38:40.079 --> 00:38:43.920
And so I'd love for us to close with uh some reflection.
00:38:44.000 --> 00:38:47.679
And so if you don't mind, if you would close your eyes, bow your head.
00:38:48.079 --> 00:38:51.039
I want us just to reflect, and I want you to reflect.
00:38:53.039 --> 00:39:00.000
I want you to consider where you struggle with this and then why you struggle with this.
00:39:00.320 --> 00:39:07.039
Do you struggle to render unto Caesar, our current government?
00:39:07.360 --> 00:39:12.719
Do you struggle to render unto them honor, respect, taxes?
00:39:13.760 --> 00:39:17.039
Do you struggle to render unto them prayers because you don't like them?
00:39:17.599 --> 00:39:24.239
And if so, take this time, repent, and ask him for the forgiveness of those sins.
00:39:24.559 --> 00:39:29.840
You're not being disobedient to them as much as you are, you're being disobedient to God.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:34.400
Or is your struggle the other way?
00:39:34.719 --> 00:39:37.119
Do you like the current governing officials?
00:39:37.599 --> 00:39:45.360
And you have a hard time admitting that our current government and officials are flawed in some ways and make decisions that do not align with the scriptures in Jesus' kingdom.
00:39:45.519 --> 00:39:48.000
Do you struggle to just be honest about that?
00:39:49.360 --> 00:39:55.519
Have you supported things that you know goes against the scriptures?
00:39:56.079 --> 00:39:58.320
If so, take some time.
00:39:58.559 --> 00:39:59.360
Repent.
00:39:59.840 --> 00:40:05.039
Ask him for forgiveness for supporting things that you know that does not align with God's kingdom.
00:40:05.280 --> 00:40:10.239
That I've lived as an American citizen more than I've lived as a heavenly citizen.
00:40:11.280 --> 00:40:17.599
And then last, have you rendered unto Caesar that which is God's alone?
00:40:18.320 --> 00:40:21.440
Have you given him more than you were supposed to?
00:40:23.840 --> 00:40:26.719
Have you given Caesar more of your evangelism?
00:40:28.079 --> 00:40:33.280
Have you given him more of your faith that he or she is going to fix it all?
00:40:33.599 --> 00:40:36.159
Have you given them more of your attention and your time?
00:40:40.960 --> 00:40:48.159
More hope in a human government than you've actually given to prayer that God's kingdom would invade the earth.
00:40:48.480 --> 00:40:51.599
Have you rendered unto you that which is God's?
00:40:51.840 --> 00:40:54.960
And if so, take this time to repent.
00:40:55.280 --> 00:41:00.320
Ask Him for forgiveness, for giving someone else God's rightful place in your life.
00:41:04.559 --> 00:41:07.760
We're gonna have a few moments just in silence, and I'll close this in prayer.
00:41:08.239 --> 00:41:09.360
But you talk to him.
00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:06.879
The teaching text for today is from Mark 12, verses 13 through 17.
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:13.679
It says, Later than uh they sent some Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.
00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:18.160
They came to him and said, Teacher, we know that you're a man of integrity.
00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:21.760
You aren't swayed by others because you pay no attention to who they are.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.719
But you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:29.920
Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
00:00:30.399 --> 00:00:32.479
Should we pay or shouldn't we?
00:00:32.719 --> 00:00:34.719
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy.
00:00:35.039 --> 00:00:36.399
Why are you trying to trap me?
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:37.119
He asked.
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:39.840
Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.
00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:43.600
So they brought him a coin and he asked them, Whose image is this?
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:45.280
And whose inscription?
00:00:45.759 --> 00:00:47.759
Caesar's, they replied.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:52.799
Then Jesus said to them, Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God and what is God's.
00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:54.640
And they were amazed at him.
00:00:55.280 --> 00:00:56.799
This is the word of the Lord.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:18.319
On Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, Charlie Kirk, an American political activist and entrepreneur, was shot and killed at an event held by his organization Turning Point.
00:01:18.959 --> 00:01:29.920
Shortly thereafter, some people with evil in their hearts began celebrating the death of an image bearer, a husband, and a father of two.
00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:32.719
Others began to mourn.
00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:41.359
And then, as it normally happens, what followed was a mass of debates and arguments on both sides.
00:01:42.239 --> 00:02:02.640
And then somewhere along the way, there developed an idea and a call to church and to church people that if your church or your pastor did not talk about Charlie Kirk and the church service from the stage or from the pulpit, that you should get up in the middle of that service and you should leave.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:18.639
So a couple days later on set on Sunday, September 14th, people began leaving churches in the middle of service or leaving churches altogether because the name of Charlie Kirk wasn't spoken from the pulpit.
00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:22.400
Now, this is very, very important.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:29.439
They did not leave because Jesus wasn't preached or worshipped.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:36.400
They did not leave because the preacher was a false prophet, bringing a false gospel the way that scriptures tell us to do that, if that's true.
00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:41.199
They didn't leave because Jesus' death and resurrection wasn't talked about.
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:46.960
They left because another man's death and name wasn't preached and talked about.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:54.560
And in so doing, they rendered unto Caesar that which was God's.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:02.960
They gave an allegiance and they gave a loyalty and they gave a boldness to Caesar that only belongs to God.
00:03:04.639 --> 00:03:16.000
So we live in a time where the church wrestles to understand in the West, here.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:25.520
It wrestles to understand and live obediently to what Jesus says in this passage, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and to God that which is God's.
00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:49.840
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.960
It's universally true and it still applies to us today, maybe more today than it did in the past.
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:07.199
So I want to look at what we can learn from what Jesus says, and then I want to look at the challenges that we face, that me and you face within the church to try and figure out how to actually live obediently to this brilliant thing that Jesus tells us to do.
00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:15.840
So what we can learn, background, what we can learn from Jesus, and then the challenge that we will face and that we actively do face in this nation, trying to follow Jesus obediently.
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.040
So, everybody good with that?
00:04:17.199 --> 00:04:18.319
Background learning things?
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:19.519
Okay, great.
00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:22.079
Background.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:24.720
This is a long quote, but it sums it up pretty good.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:29.279
Mark Strauss in his commentary just gives us three paragraphs that sums up everything that's taking place.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:31.600
This is what he says about the tax in this question.
00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:41.839
He says, Archelius, the son of Herod the Great, the Tetrarch of Judea, mentioned in Matthew 2, he was removed and exiled by Caesar Augustus because of his misrule.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:58.959
And so the Jews of Judea were now, at this point during this conversation, were under Roman rule, uh, ruled by and governed by a Roman prefect under the authority of the emperor, and because of that, they were required to pay into a tax into the fiscus or the emperor's treasury.
00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:02.720
Because they're under Roman rule, they do not rule themselves, they have to pay a tax.
00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:04.720
This imposition of the poll tax.
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:09.600
In 86, it sparked a revolt led by Judas the Galilean.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:14.720
And notice what he said, he chided his countrymen for paying tribute to the Romans rather than to God alone.
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.120
Do not render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:18.639
That's what he's saying.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:25.839
The revolt was quickly put down, but the tax remained highly unpopular among patriotic Jews.
00:05:26.079 --> 00:05:29.680
The coin would have been stamped with an image of Tiberius Caesar.
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:32.480
I believe we have an image, Colin, if you want to go to it.
00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:43.360
The coin would have been stamped with an image of Tiberius Caesar who ruled Rome from AD 14 to 37, and it would have had the words on it, uh, son of the divine Augustus.
00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:55.839
And so such a coin would have been highly offensive to pious Jews because it bore an idolatrous image and extolled the emperor as a god, and so the coin itself violated the first and second of the Ten Commandments.
00:05:55.920 --> 00:05:57.360
And so they would have hated the coin.
00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:03.279
Many of them wouldn't even touch the coin, hold the coin, use the coin because it was so offensive to them.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:05.120
Not supposed to have idols.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:14.160
And so on, uh Strauss continues and he says, So, some Jews, for example, the zealots, they just flatly refused to pay it.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:15.040
We will not pay it.
00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:20.879
And they were revolutionaries and they were revolting because it was for them an admission to the Roman right to rule.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:23.439
If I pay you this, that means that you do rule me.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:26.160
And they were actually ruling them, and so they wouldn't pay it.
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:33.680
The Pharisees, in this discussion, they disliked paying it for the reasons stated above, but they didn't actively oppose it.
00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.480
And then the Herodians had no objections to it.
00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:37.120
They loved it.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:42.240
Since the Herodian dynasty was ruling in Galilee under the authority of the Romans.
00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:45.199
And so the Romans were empowering the Herodians, and they're like, we don't care.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:48.879
Pay them whatever they want, as long as we stay in power, who cares if they're in power?
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:56.480
And so the intent of the question posed to Jesus was to force him to identify himself either with the zealots or with the Herodians.
00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:02.879
If he sided with the zealots against taxation, he would be accused of rebellion against the Roman authorities.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:13.199
If he sided with the Herodians in support of the taxation, he would lose faith with the people who hated Roman rule, and then they were suffering under its crushing tax burden.
00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:15.120
And so that's what's taking place here.
00:07:15.279 --> 00:07:16.560
That's why they're asking this question.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:17.839
It is a hypocritical thing.
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:18.720
They're trying to catch him.
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:20.079
They don't actually care.
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:24.879
But they're asking him, trying to trap him and put him, are you with the zealots, are you with the Herodians?
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:29.920
Are you trying to lead a revolution or are you just good with Roman rule and you're actually okay with the pagans?
00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:30.399
Which one?
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:32.959
And Jesus answers really, really well.
00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:34.399
He doesn't fall into their trap.
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:39.199
And he actually answers in such a way, give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, give unto God that which is God's.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:43.279
He answers in such a way that at the end of this passage, it says everyone was amazed.
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:47.600
Even the people that came to trap him, they're like, This guy, he's brilliant.
00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:49.439
Like we just cannot seem.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:51.439
Eventually, we're gonna get to the point that keep asking them questions.
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:53.600
They're eventually getting to the point where we're like, stop asking them questions.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:57.040
Every time we ask them a question to trap them, it gets better and better and better for him.
00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:58.959
Like we just gotta stop asking them questions.
00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:02.000
And so they're stunned and amazed by what Jesus says.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:06.240
And now I want to look at that's the background, and now I want to look at what Jesus actually says.
00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:09.439
What do we learn from Jesus' answer?
00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:14.079
And so the first thing he says, he says, give back to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:15.839
Give back to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:26.560
And so what he's seeking to say is that give to the governing authorities that rule you, give to the governing authorities things that do not go against what God says.
00:08:26.800 --> 00:08:28.560
That's basically what he's saying.
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:37.360
So Mark Strauss in his commentary again says, Jesus affirmed that Caesar has a legitimate claim, but then so does God.
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:40.240
So give to each his rightful claim.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:45.279
So long as God's rights were safeguarded, there was no need to question the rights of Caesar.
00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:51.759
Civil obedience, attested by paying the tax, no more contradicts or abolishes obedience due to God.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:54.559
And so paying the tax doesn't make you disobedient to God.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:56.080
And so don't worry about it.
00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:07.279
And so follow and be lawfully obedient to the things that your Caesar, your governing bodies, be lawfully obedient to those things, unless they defy God, unless they get in the way of those things.
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:14.000
And then faithfully choose to follow God and defy your government, where it actually leads you to be disobedient to God.
00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:19.679
But if it doesn't force you into disobedience, walk faithfully with God, giving unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:31.200
Paul says this in Romans 13, writing to Christians in Rome under the Emperor Nero, who's lighting Christians on fire and using them as candles for his dinner parties.
00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:35.440
He's writing this to them and what they're actively doing.
00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:40.559
He's in prison and in certain in Rome, and then he's writing this particular thing.
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:44.000
And so he says, Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:45.840
Again, who is the governing authority?
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:47.840
Nero, lighting Christians on fire.
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.159
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:53.919
For there is no authority except that which God has established.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:57.120
The authorities that exist have been established by God.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:03.360
Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted.
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:06.080
And those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:13.840
Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:20.639
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants who give their full time to governing.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:22.960
Give to everyone what you owe them.
00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:24.960
If you owe taxes, pay taxes.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:26.480
If revenue, then revenue.
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:28.080
If respect, then respect.
00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:29.759
If honor, then honor.
00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:38.240
And so these things, all of that stuff, the taxes, the revenue, the respect, the honor, those things don't lead you into disobedience to the Ten Commandments.
00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:40.399
They don't lead you into disobedience away from God.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:49.120
And so because those things are required of you, but they're not leading you away from being obedient to God, you can give those things and render those things unto Caesar.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:50.639
And so that's what he's saying.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:11:06.559
Pete Gregg, in one of his books, I couldn't remember which book, but uh, he shared this story of a Christian community that did this really well and like navigated, rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, but also to God that which is God's.
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:15.039
So he talks about this particular uh church that existed back in the um early 1900s, or excuse me, 900s.
00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:26.159
He says, the fourth Fatimid Caliph, it was an Islamic extremist leader of the Fatimid dynasty, ruled from 1953 to 1975 in Egypt.
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:38.799
And so when persecuting the church, he once, the the caliph, once issued a decree to close all churches, all of the churches of the Coptic Christian community in the land, and then forbid the church bells to ring.
00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:44.080
Capital punishment threatened anyone who dared to meet in a church or even open a church.
00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:47.600
And so for nine long years, the churches were closed.
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:51.519
The gates grew rusty, and the pigeons took residence in their sanctuaries.
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:56.559
Some Christians traveled across the desert seeking monasteries in the wilderness so that they could meet for prayer and worship.
00:11:56.720 --> 00:12:04.159
However, the majority of them could not afford the time to travel on foot across the desert, so they were forced to stay in their homes on Sundays.
00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:14.720
Now, before you go to the next slide, Colin, at this point, if you just, if that's what you hear about a church, the government said you can't meet in your church buildings, you can't meet there and worship.
00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:16.559
And then they obeyed that.
00:12:16.799 --> 00:12:22.320
It looks like they have rendered unto Caesar way too much power, way too much authority.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:32.799
They should have pushed back, they should have just continued to meet in the churches and just dealt with the persecution that they deal with because they're supposed to render unto God that which is God, and Caesar has told them they can't meet anymore.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:38.320
And so it looks like from the start, nine years, they've just rendered unto Caesar way too much power.
00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:39.679
But that's not the story.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:40.799
It goes on.
00:12:41.039 --> 00:12:49.360
And Pete says, After nine years, the Caliph decided to see for himself how crushed and silenced the Coptic Christians were now.
00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:55.120
So in disguise he set out on a Sunday and walked in the streets of their quarters in old Cairo.
00:12:55.200 --> 00:13:03.039
And what he heard was the sound of their prayers, Bible readings, and worship from every house that he passed by.
00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:08.480
His reaction was another decree open their church buildings and let them pray as they please.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:14.000
I thought I'd close the church in every street, only to find that I've opened a church in every house.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:24.240
And what I love about it is how threading the needle this is, because it seemed like render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:25.600
You can have our church building.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:26.159
Fine.
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:29.360
You can have our church building, but you can't take our worship.
00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:32.879
And it's this perfect way of looking at like what Jesus is saying.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:42.000
It was like, look, everybody, I mean, we walked through this thing that was COVID, and people had issues with the buildings closing and the mask that we had to wear and all these different things.
00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:50.639
And it's like, those things aren't hindering your worship of Jesus because it doesn't happen in a specific building or it's not hindered by a mask in front of your face.
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:52.399
It doesn't do any of those things.
00:13:52.559 --> 00:13:55.279
And I don't actually care what you believe about masks or buildings.
00:13:55.360 --> 00:14:09.440
I'm just saying there's a there's something here that I think is important for us to understand that there are spaces that Jesus is saying, if it does not lead you into active disobedience to God, then just be the best citizen you can possibly be.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:12.879
Because at the end of the day, that's what he's calling us to be.
00:14:14.480 --> 00:14:14.879
C.B.
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:18.559
Cranfield says this Jesus is indicating God's rights are to be honored.
00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:21.600
And there's no doubt about that, God's rights must be honored.
00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:28.000
But that there are obligations to Caesar which do not infringe your rights to God, but are indeed ordained by God.
00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:32.720
There are obligations to Caesar which do not infringe the rights of God.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:34.159
They're ordained by him.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:50.320
And so even if we disagree, even if we don't like the leader or the governing body that's leading us, so long as they don't lead you into disobedience to Jesus, Jesus is saying, then subject yourself to that leading.
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:52.639
Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:54.159
That's the first thing he says.
00:14:54.320 --> 00:14:58.480
Then he says, Render unto God, give to God what is God's.
00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:08.240
And this is most likely a command, or at least he's referencing a command to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:10.159
He's it's it's all encapsulating.
00:15:10.240 --> 00:15:11.519
What do we, what is God's?
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:12.960
It's like, well, everything is God's.
00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:14.720
And Caesar was created by God.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:16.559
And so what are we supposed to render unto him?
00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:18.240
It's like honestly, everything.
00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:22.159
And his point is God gets our first and he gets our most.
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:24.000
He gets first and he gets most.
00:15:24.080 --> 00:15:28.639
And so our heart is his before we should ever give it to Caesar.
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:35.440
Our love, our hope, our devotion, our allegiance, all of those things are his first before they're anybody else's.
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:42.559
Our mind, all of our thinking, all of our attention, our strength, all of our time, all of our obedience, the things that we're doing.
00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:44.879
What who do those things belong to first and most?
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:48.159
Those things belong first and most to God and to him himself.
00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:50.720
And so he gets those things first and most.
00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:54.080
He gets our full obedience, he gets our full allegiance.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:16:03.279
Even when we disagree with him, with God, he's like, yeah, when when the when the government leads you to be disobedient to me, then don't listen to the government.
00:16:03.440 --> 00:16:08.559
But when I lead you to be disobedient to the government, be obedient to me and be disobedient to the government.
00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:10.240
Because I get first and most.
00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:12.000
And that's what he's saying.
00:16:12.320 --> 00:16:20.799
Even when we disagree, even when the practices of the government are leading us into spaces that are negative, we're supposed to give our full allegiance and full obedience to God.
00:16:20.960 --> 00:16:29.039
The early church, I mean, you'll know this, the the persecuted church is actively having to do this in many ways, but the early church had to practice this under Roman rule.
00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:34.480
They had to practice this thing of like giving to God that which is God's and not giving to Caesar that which is God's.
00:16:34.639 --> 00:16:38.240
And so Bruce Shelley in his book on church history says this.
00:16:38.720 --> 00:16:52.320
He says, On a certain day in the Roman world, uh, on a certain day in the year, every Roman citizen had to come to the temple of Caesar and burn a pinch of incense there and then say the words, Caesar is Lord.
00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:56.000
And when he had done that, he could really go away and worship any God he liked.
00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:56.799
They didn't care.
00:16:57.039 --> 00:17:01.919
Thus, to the Roman, the Christians seemed utterly intolerant and insanely stubborn.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:09.440
Had the Christians just been willing to burn the pinch of incense and say formally, Caesar is Lord, they could have gone on worshiping Jesus to their heart's content.
00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:12.079
But notice, the Christians would not compromise.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:13.920
They were like, I don't care.
00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:16.079
Anyways, I'm gonna keep going.
00:17:16.240 --> 00:17:22.960
That is, that is why the Roman, the uh Rome regarded them as a band of potential revolutionaries threatening the very existence of their empire.
00:17:23.119 --> 00:17:28.079
But these people looked at these Christians and are like, just burn, we don't think he's God either.
00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:28.960
He's dead.
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:33.759
Like, we don't we don't think that he'll just burn the incense and say the words and nobody cares.
00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:38.799
And they were like, we will not, we will not render unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:17:38.960 --> 00:17:39.680
We just won't.
00:17:39.839 --> 00:17:44.240
And so I don't care if it's incense or words or whatever, I'm not gonna shift on this.
00:17:45.759 --> 00:17:50.720
They would not render to Caesar what was God's alone, even when it went against the governing authorities.
00:17:50.799 --> 00:17:58.640
They were compellingly defiant in those ways against the government for the sake of God and for the sake of Jesus in his name.
00:17:59.519 --> 00:18:01.440
And so that's what we're called to as well.
00:18:01.680 --> 00:18:08.319
If the government is seeking to lead us into disobedience to God, then it's like, I'm so sorry, I have to step back, and I cannot be obedient to that.
00:18:09.039 --> 00:18:20.000
When we disagree, when it's pushing us into something that we disagree with, but it is also very true, and it's not the world that they lived in, but it's the world that we live in.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:25.920
We live in a time where we actually put people in power based on our own votes.
00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:36.480
And so this is also true the other way, that God should still get our full obedience and our full allegiance, even when we voted for the person in power.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:42.640
If they do something, and we vote, we like them, we voted for them, we're so we celebrated when they won or whatever.
00:18:42.720 --> 00:18:44.400
We like, we we we're so glad.
00:18:44.559 --> 00:18:54.160
But if they do something against the scriptures or lead you to go and do something against the scriptures, even though you voted for them, you must render unto God that which is God's.
00:18:54.400 --> 00:19:00.880
And you have to push back, and you you are not supposed to just go, well, I voted for them, so I guess anything they do is right.
00:19:01.200 --> 00:19:03.359
No, that's not true.
00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:16.400
Even in the case where the leader is someone that you wanted to be in charge, you were not to support them when they're doing things that are anti-biblical or against the scriptures, because you cannot render unto them that which belongs to God.
00:19:16.559 --> 00:19:20.240
And he gets our full obedience, he gets our full allegiance.
00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:34.960
And if we went along with people who were doing wrong things even though we like them, if we go along with them, even though we like them, but they're doing something wrong, we are justifying something that is against the scriptures, and that's not right.
00:19:35.039 --> 00:19:36.079
That's called sin.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:40.799
We cannot justify sin just because we like the person in office.
00:19:41.200 --> 00:19:44.079
And so Jesus is saying our fullest allegiance is to God.
00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:46.480
And so we don't render to anyone unconditional trust.
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:52.079
We don't render to anyone other than Jesus unconditional trust, unconditional allegiance, unconditional obedience.
00:19:52.160 --> 00:19:55.119
That belongs to God, and so we can't give it to anybody else.
00:19:59.119 --> 00:19:59.680
All right.
00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:20.720
When we give to Caesar that which belongs to God, um, or we don't give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar because we don't like Caesar.
00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:22.640
Both those things are wrong.
00:20:22.960 --> 00:20:27.680
And so places where I've just seen this, notice this, been at this for a minute.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:43.279
When we don't like Caesar, when we don't like Caesar, or the government, when we don't like them, the struggle that we have and the challenge we face is many people refuse to be obedient to God by giving to Caesar that which is Caesar's because we don't like Caesar.
00:20:43.440 --> 00:20:50.079
Caesar's the worst, and so I'm not gonna give him what he is is supposed to receive because I don't like Caesar.
00:20:50.240 --> 00:20:54.480
And so, for instance, Romans 13, Paul says, Everyone be subject to the governing authorities.
00:20:54.640 --> 00:20:55.680
Don't rebel.
00:20:56.079 --> 00:21:00.720
Um, you know, pay taxes, revenue, pay respect, pay honor.
00:21:01.039 --> 00:21:03.039
And then it's like, I don't want to give them honor.
00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:04.160
They don't deserve my honor.
00:21:04.240 --> 00:21:06.000
And it's like, that's not why you give it.
00:21:06.160 --> 00:21:08.720
You don't give honor because Caesar deserves honor.
00:21:08.799 --> 00:21:12.480
You give honor because God demands that you give honor to Caesar.
00:21:12.720 --> 00:21:15.839
And if he's saying it, then you're supposed to render unto God that which is God's.
00:21:15.920 --> 00:21:19.279
And you're supposed to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's because God said to do that.
00:21:19.440 --> 00:21:20.559
And so it's never been about.
00:21:20.720 --> 00:21:22.400
Well, they don't deserve my respect.
00:21:22.720 --> 00:21:25.440
Like, true, they probably don't.
00:21:25.680 --> 00:21:27.440
Or at least not all the time.
00:21:28.400 --> 00:21:30.240
But you're not doing it because they deserve it.
00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:32.559
Paul also says that you're supposed to pray for them.
00:21:32.799 --> 00:21:38.640
He writes this to Timothy again in prison, writing to Timothy about Nero and about the governing authorities.
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:52.000
He says, I urge you, first of all, that prayers and petitions and intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:59.759
This is good, and this pleases God, our Savior, who wants all people, even our governing bodies, to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.400
Truth.
00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:02.880
And so Paul says it pleases God.
00:22:03.039 --> 00:22:03.519
It's good.
00:22:03.680 --> 00:22:09.039
When you do those things, it pleases him that you're doing that because you're not doing it unto them or for them.
00:22:09.119 --> 00:22:10.559
You're doing it because he's asked you to.
00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:12.319
And you're like, I don't want to pray for them.
00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:13.119
I don't like them.
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:15.200
And he's like, but you're not doing it because of them.
00:22:15.440 --> 00:22:17.039
It also says thankfulness.
00:22:17.119 --> 00:22:25.279
And so it forces you, even if you don't like the person in office or the governing body, it forces you to go, like, I have to find something to be thankful for.
00:22:25.599 --> 00:22:27.759
Ah, I don't want to.
00:22:27.920 --> 00:22:30.720
And it's like, but you're not doing it for them.
00:22:30.799 --> 00:22:32.240
You're doing it for him.
00:22:33.279 --> 00:22:36.000
And some of you out there are like, are we supposed to do that for Hitler too?
00:22:36.079 --> 00:22:37.200
I know you guys are thinking about Hitler.
00:22:37.279 --> 00:22:38.559
Everybody's always thinking about Hitler.
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:41.440
Are there exceptions to this rule?
00:22:41.519 --> 00:22:42.559
Why are you looking for an exception?
00:22:42.640 --> 00:22:44.079
Just read the scriptures.
00:22:45.759 --> 00:22:49.680
And probably there's something there, but we that's not here, so we're not going to talk about that.
00:22:51.759 --> 00:22:59.680
But again, it's important to know Paul's in prison under Nero, lighting Christians on fire and using them for dinner party candles.
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:06.160
And their screams are drowning out, you know, drowned out by drums and music and all the different things at his dinner parties.
00:23:06.400 --> 00:23:12.559
It's hard to do these things when they don't deserve it, but the truth is you're not doing it because they deserve it.
00:23:12.640 --> 00:23:15.119
You're doing it because God has said, give unto God that which is God's.
00:23:15.200 --> 00:23:17.920
And God has said, give unto Caesar that which is his.
00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:27.119
And you are to do that even when you don't like them, respect them, give it to them anyways, because you're not doing it for them, you're doing it for God Himself.
00:23:27.599 --> 00:23:29.279
And so that's one challenge.
00:23:29.519 --> 00:23:37.759
When we don't like the governing bodies, when we don't like them, we struggle to be obedient to God because it's hard to give to Caesar that which is Caesar's because we don't like Caesar.
00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:39.119
That is one struggle.
00:23:39.279 --> 00:23:41.599
And I would say that's the minor one.
00:23:41.920 --> 00:24:00.400
The biggest struggle that I've noticed in the church, the biggest challenge, the greater challenge, is when we actually do like the person, when we voted for them, when we put them in office, when we were excited that they're going to be leading our country or whatever, the greater challenge that we face as Christians is when we like them.
00:24:00.480 --> 00:24:08.240
And when that happens, the trap that we can fall into is to give to Caesar that which is God's instead of giving to Caesar that which is Caesar's.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:13.920
We flip it and we mix it and we begin giving to Caesar that which is God's alone.
00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:23.279
So, for example, places where I've seen this, things like evangelism, we're supposed to be sharing about Jesus.
00:24:23.599 --> 00:24:27.279
That should be the name on our lips is supposed to be about Jesus.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.400
All the good that Jesus can do for us, everything that He's done.
00:24:30.559 --> 00:24:41.599
But many Christians share more about their president that they love, more about the politics that they believe in, and all the good news that their president, politician, or policies can do.
00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:47.119
They spend more time evangelizing the good news of their politician than they do about Jesus.
00:24:47.279 --> 00:24:54.000
They know more about their candidate and what their candidate can do for them than what Jesus can do for them, and that's on their lips a lot more.
00:24:54.160 --> 00:25:00.000
And when that happens, you have rendered your evangelism unto Caesar and not to Jesus.
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:04.880
Sacrifice, devotion, loyalty.
00:25:05.119 --> 00:25:09.440
We give that to Caesar when our officials are clearly doing something wrong.
00:25:09.599 --> 00:25:13.680
And instead of being honest about it and acknowledging it, we defend them.
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:15.119
We defend them.
00:25:15.359 --> 00:25:18.400
They're doing something that it's very clear in the scriptures.
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:21.039
They cannot do that's wrong.
00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:23.039
Like we cannot go about that.
00:25:24.400 --> 00:25:25.599
People defend them.
00:25:25.839 --> 00:25:27.279
And you've given something.
00:25:27.440 --> 00:25:34.799
There are plenty of people that don't like the way that God does things in the Bible, and we choose that and go, like, well, that's just their opinion of the scriptures.
00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:37.519
But we defend our politician more than we defend God.
00:25:38.960 --> 00:25:42.079
Somebody says something against Jesus, and it's like, ah, well, that's just their opinion.
00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:44.640
Someone says something against our president or the people that we like.
00:25:44.799 --> 00:25:48.640
We bow up, we fight online, we get in arguments, our families split over it.
00:25:48.799 --> 00:25:50.400
It's like, your families were only supposed to.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:54.240
Jesus said, I bring the sword, and the sword will be this thing that divides.
00:25:54.319 --> 00:25:56.559
Some people will choose me and some people won't choose me.
00:25:56.720 --> 00:25:58.880
And the reason, the only reason to divide.
00:25:59.119 --> 00:26:01.279
People are dividing over presidents.
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:05.759
We have rendered unto Caesar that which is C uh that which is God's.
00:26:05.920 --> 00:26:07.200
Apologetics.
00:26:07.519 --> 00:26:08.960
Apologetics.
00:26:09.359 --> 00:26:12.400
Giving a defense for something if you don't know what the word apologetics means.
00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:16.960
God calls us to be ready to give a defense for our faith, 1 Peter 3.15.
00:26:17.119 --> 00:26:24.720
But instead of having a defense of our faith and what we believe, we have a better defense of our political party and why we hold to that politically.
00:26:25.200 --> 00:26:31.920
We use those arguments and that we have a better apology for our policies and our politics than we do for Jesus.
00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:38.480
And we use those online in arguments, families, randos on the internet, we just use those against everybody.
00:26:38.720 --> 00:26:47.200
We can better defend why our political view and party is correct and why the other is wrong better than you can actually defend your own faith.
00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:52.880
You can defend why your policies of your particular candidates or whatever are better.
00:26:53.039 --> 00:26:55.920
You know more about them than you're able to actually defend your faith.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:00.400
And Christian, if that's you, you have rendered unto Caesar your apologetics.
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:05.680
You have rendered unto Caesar your ability to defend what actually only should be given to God.
00:27:05.920 --> 00:27:09.519
I don't care if you're able to tell me why this policy is better than this one.
00:27:09.680 --> 00:27:14.400
Can you actually go and talk to a Muslim about Jesus and why Jesus is the king that rules the universe?
00:27:14.480 --> 00:27:15.440
No, I can't do any of that.
00:27:15.519 --> 00:27:16.960
Then shut up about the other thing.
00:27:18.319 --> 00:27:19.200
Sorry.
00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:24.480
That other thing's not going to change the world.
00:27:33.680 --> 00:27:34.480
Attention.
00:27:39.440 --> 00:27:45.599
When we give more time and attention to the news, political debates.
00:27:46.640 --> 00:28:00.079
Political debates online than you do just a second.
00:28:08.240 --> 00:28:14.240
When we know more about politics and policy than we do about the scriptures.
00:28:14.880 --> 00:28:22.720
When we spend more time reading the news, watching the news, wherever you find your news, because it's everywhere and it's all the time.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:24.160
Spend more time doing that.
00:28:24.319 --> 00:28:26.880
You know, the Bible's with you 24-7 as well.
00:28:29.920 --> 00:28:33.680
Scripture, prayer, fellowship with other believers.
00:28:34.240 --> 00:28:38.799
You've rendered unto Caesar your time, your attention.
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:40.799
All of that should have been his.
00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:43.599
Discipleship.
00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:46.160
Worked in student ministry for a long time.
00:28:46.240 --> 00:28:47.920
It was very discouraging.
00:28:49.119 --> 00:28:59.920
When I had students in my ministry who knew more about presidential candidates and presidential policies than they did about Jesus, I was like, your parents have discipled you.
00:29:00.240 --> 00:29:03.039
They've just given their discipleship to politics.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:10.160
They've given their discipleship to Donald Trump or to Kamala Harris or to whoever's next.
00:29:10.480 --> 00:29:14.799
And they know a ton about things that are not eternal.
00:29:18.000 --> 00:29:21.759
They're disciples of presidents and not disciples of a king.
00:29:24.160 --> 00:29:26.160
Citizenship and identity.
00:29:26.640 --> 00:29:33.279
We're called to imitate Jesus, be formed into his image, to live as citizens of a kingdom, not of this world.
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:37.519
That means that our values should be Jesus' values, not the world's values.
00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:45.279
But when we act more American than we do Christian, you have rendered unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:29:45.519 --> 00:29:53.839
When you look more like the American dream than you do the dream that Jesus had of a church in Acts 2, where there's no one that has a need.
00:29:54.240 --> 00:29:55.759
Every bill is paid.
00:29:55.920 --> 00:29:59.519
All the food, everybody in that space has food to eat.
00:29:59.920 --> 00:30:07.920
But when our when you look more like the American dream than the dream that Jesus had in the life, you have rendered unto Caesar that which is God's.
00:30:08.720 --> 00:30:10.400
Our citizenship and our identity.
00:30:10.559 --> 00:30:12.559
We're supposed to be formed into his likeness.
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:15.440
We should always look a little different than the American dream.
00:30:15.680 --> 00:30:18.000
We should be oddly formed in that way.
00:30:18.079 --> 00:30:20.319
And they just look at us and be like, you don't really fit.
00:30:20.559 --> 00:30:22.799
It's like, I don't live here, man.
00:30:24.400 --> 00:30:26.000
Faith and hope.
00:30:26.400 --> 00:30:28.079
Jesus is the hope of the world.
00:30:28.240 --> 00:30:33.200
It's his kingdom coming into the world, his will being done in the world that is the answer to the world's problems.
00:30:33.440 --> 00:30:41.759
But when your beliefs and comments begin to shift and become, my politician is the hope of the world.
00:30:41.920 --> 00:30:45.200
My politician is the answer to the world's deepest problem.
00:30:45.440 --> 00:30:49.200
If we could just get this person in office, then we're really going to see the things going.
00:30:49.440 --> 00:30:55.279
It's like you have given that person or that particular group all of your faith and all of your hope.
00:30:55.440 --> 00:30:58.480
And you're talking about them as if they're the Messiah.
00:31:01.279 --> 00:31:02.720
The Great Commission.
00:31:04.640 --> 00:31:10.799
Jesus' commission for how to make the world more Christian was to go into the world.
00:31:10.960 --> 00:31:12.559
You want to make the world more Christian?
00:31:12.720 --> 00:31:14.799
Go into the world and make more Christians.
00:31:15.039 --> 00:31:18.400
We try to make the world more Christian through legislation.
00:31:19.440 --> 00:31:26.480
We're trying to create, we just need to get a Christian in office, which I'm all about Christians being in the political spheres.
00:31:26.640 --> 00:31:27.599
That's fine.
00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:31.359
We just need to get a Christian in office, and our nation will be Christian again.
00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:34.319
We're trying to legislate morality.
00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:36.160
We're trying to legislate the kingdom of God.
00:31:36.240 --> 00:31:39.039
And Jesus has already told us how to bring about the kingdom of God.
00:31:39.279 --> 00:31:44.640
The early church was not trying to make the world more Christian by legislation.
00:31:44.799 --> 00:31:50.960
They were trying to make the world more Christian by walking out and sharing the gospel and making more Christians because they were following the Great Commission.
00:31:51.200 --> 00:31:57.759
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to do everything that I've commanded them to do, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
00:31:57.839 --> 00:31:59.359
Like, and they just did that.
00:31:59.599 --> 00:32:05.920
Paul's not writing to the Roman Christians, like, just get Nero out of there and get one of you bad boys in there, and then we're really going to have something with Rome.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:10.640
Like he wasn't saying that, but he was trying to share the gospel with every single person that he knew.
00:32:10.960 --> 00:32:17.119
Because he knew the Great Commission in God's kingdom, morality in God's kingdom moves forward, not by legislating it.
00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:20.720
It's by actually doing what he calls us to do.
00:32:20.799 --> 00:32:25.920
And so we our Great Commission can't sound, if it doesn't sound like what Jesus said, go therefore and make disciples.
00:32:26.000 --> 00:32:31.599
If the Great Commission that we have, the Great American Commission is just get a Christian president in there and then the world's going to be saved.
00:32:31.759 --> 00:32:33.039
That's not the Great Commission.
00:32:34.400 --> 00:32:35.200
And again, I don't care.
00:32:35.359 --> 00:32:36.000
Like it's fine.
00:32:36.160 --> 00:32:37.039
I think those things are great.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:44.319
We have this ability to place people who have particular beliefs in those things, but he has told us, you want to advance the kingdom, you want it to rule the world and take the world.
00:32:44.480 --> 00:32:45.599
I've already told you how to do it.
00:32:45.759 --> 00:32:48.240
Go therefore and make disciples.
00:32:48.640 --> 00:32:51.680
Not go therefore and find a president that can make disciples.
00:32:51.920 --> 00:32:53.279
No, it's not that.
00:32:55.759 --> 00:33:09.839
When we mix these things, when we don't give Caesar what is Caesar's, or when we give to Caesar that which is God's, we shift from being Christians who live in America to Americans who call themselves Christian.
00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:16.960
Our primary formation is from the nation itself and not from Jesus.
00:33:19.279 --> 00:33:22.000
So implications for us.
00:33:23.519 --> 00:33:24.079
Just one.
00:33:24.559 --> 00:33:30.799
If you are a follower of Jesus, you will not fit neatly in any political party.
00:33:31.039 --> 00:33:36.079
The reason is because Jesus did not fit neatly with any political party.
00:33:36.240 --> 00:33:39.839
He didn't fit neatly with the conservatives, he didn't fit neatly with the liberals.
00:33:40.079 --> 00:33:42.000
And you see that in the text here.
00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:52.720
The liberal Herodians and the conservative Bible-thumping Pharisees, both of them came together not to worship Jesus, but to get rid of Jesus.
00:33:53.039 --> 00:33:57.440
He did not fit in either of their spheres of influence.
00:33:57.680 --> 00:34:01.599
Mark Strauss says, Herodians and Pharisees make strange bedfellows.
00:34:01.839 --> 00:34:04.799
Their association here automatically raises eyebrows.
00:34:04.960 --> 00:34:08.320
The Herodians were opposed to the Pharisees for sure on political grounds.
00:34:08.400 --> 00:34:18.800
While the Herodians, or excuse me, while the Herodians supported the pro-Roman Herodian dynasty, the Pharisees rejected any rule apart from the theocratic kingdom under a Davidic ruler.
00:34:19.039 --> 00:34:22.639
Yet the two groups were united in their opposition to Jesus.
00:34:22.880 --> 00:34:25.280
Neither of them liked Jesus all that much.
00:34:25.599 --> 00:34:27.119
They just didn't like him.
00:34:27.360 --> 00:34:29.440
He didn't align with them.
00:34:29.679 --> 00:34:35.360
And the Pharisees could have been like, come on, man, like you like that Herodians, they believe, I mean, they're pagans.
00:34:35.519 --> 00:34:37.440
Like at least we believe some of the Bible.
00:34:37.519 --> 00:34:38.400
Like, come on, man.
00:34:38.480 --> 00:34:39.519
Like you align with us.
00:34:39.599 --> 00:34:44.880
And he's like, I will not align with you that way, just because you believe some of the Bible.
00:34:45.440 --> 00:34:45.920
You're wrong.
00:34:46.079 --> 00:34:49.360
And the Herodians are like, come on, man, we're like super inclusive.
00:34:49.599 --> 00:34:51.039
We got all the power.
00:34:51.280 --> 00:34:52.880
Like, why don't you align with you?
00:34:53.039 --> 00:34:54.880
We could really do something, you know?
00:34:55.440 --> 00:34:58.000
And he's like, no, I won't align with that either.
00:34:58.639 --> 00:35:08.239
Pastor and author Rich Philodis says, if you are completely comfortable in any earthly political party, it is because you don't know who you are as a citizen in the kingdom of heaven.
00:35:08.480 --> 00:35:10.960
If you're completely comfortable, I'm all set.
00:35:11.519 --> 00:35:13.679
You don't know who you are in the kingdom of heaven.
00:35:13.920 --> 00:35:19.199
You shouldn't fit comfortably because your king does not and did not fit comfortably either.
00:35:19.360 --> 00:35:27.599
He pushed back on both sides because his allegiance was to the father and his father's kingdom and not to any empire or kingdom that can be built here.
00:35:29.679 --> 00:35:33.679
Tim Keller in 2005 said this.
00:35:33.840 --> 00:35:38.079
And so those of you who know the political sphere in 2005, he said this.
00:35:50.320 --> 00:35:59.039
Conservatives think the government should be, should control personal morality, but should leave people free to do whatever they choose with their money.
00:35:59.280 --> 00:36:08.000
Liberals, on the other hand, think the government should control and redistribute that money and income, but should leave people free to do whatever they choose in the area of personal morality.
00:36:08.320 --> 00:36:16.719
If you are more concerned about abortion, the changing sexual customs, and the severe secularization of the public square, you will tend to vote Republican.
00:36:16.880 --> 00:36:23.840
If you're more concerned about racial discrimination, marginalization of the poor, and the erosion of the environment, then you will tend to vote Democrat.
00:36:24.079 --> 00:36:30.000
Of course, the problem is that all of those things are concerns for anyone who reads and trusts the Bible.
00:36:30.159 --> 00:36:31.599
All of them matter.
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:35.519
Therefore, the two-party system does not serve Christians well.
00:36:35.679 --> 00:36:42.800
Currently, it virtually forces us to leave half of our faith at the door, either personal wholeness ethics, or social wholeness ethics.
00:36:42.880 --> 00:36:44.159
So what are we to do?
00:36:44.400 --> 00:36:48.320
And the answer is we should not idolize one party and demonize the other.
00:36:48.480 --> 00:36:50.559
And he goes on, it's a long article.
00:36:50.800 --> 00:36:58.880
But what are we to do in this space where one party forces us to divorce ourselves from something that we actually hold to if we hold to the scriptures?
00:36:59.039 --> 00:37:02.079
And then the other one just leaves that stuff out and says, divorce yourself from the other stuff.
00:37:02.159 --> 00:37:02.880
What are we to do?
00:37:03.119 --> 00:37:04.960
Don't make them Messiah.
00:37:05.280 --> 00:37:06.960
Don't make them Jesus.
00:37:07.199 --> 00:37:11.679
And don't follow them blindly into this space and be like, everything that they do is right or everything that they do is wrong.
00:37:11.760 --> 00:37:14.719
It's like, no, they're kind of hitting and missing here and there.
00:37:15.360 --> 00:37:16.960
But we're a part of a different kingdom.
00:37:17.039 --> 00:37:18.400
So what are we to do?
00:37:18.719 --> 00:37:20.880
I think Jesus tells us what to do.
00:37:21.119 --> 00:37:22.159
What are we to do?
00:37:22.320 --> 00:37:28.639
Whether you like Caesar or not, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, so long as it doesn't lead you to be disobedient to God.
00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:33.519
And then render unto God's that which is God's, that full obedience and full allegiance.
00:37:33.599 --> 00:37:40.239
And never, and where you find yourself, I have given him, I have given Caesar what belongs to God.
00:37:40.400 --> 00:37:42.159
Repent and turn back from that.
00:37:42.320 --> 00:37:43.840
Don't mix those two.
00:37:44.639 --> 00:37:54.960
Because if you do, you wind up being formed more into an American Christian than you are a Jesus following Christian, an actual Christian.
00:37:55.280 --> 00:37:56.800
And I think it's great to be American.
00:37:56.960 --> 00:38:05.199
Like there's so many things that I think we have, we're praying in the back for all the different spaces that the church is being just brutalized and people are, and so we have so much freedom here.
00:38:05.360 --> 00:38:05.920
I love that.
00:38:06.000 --> 00:38:07.760
I'm not saying anything against that.
00:38:10.960 --> 00:38:15.039
But we need to mind what Jesus is saying and seek to be obedient to this.
00:38:15.280 --> 00:38:17.280
He wants us to be salt and light into the world.
00:38:17.360 --> 00:38:25.599
And when even when we agree and love the person in power, if they do something wrong, it's still truth to power that we're able to speak very honestly.
00:38:25.840 --> 00:38:30.639
Because I'm not so aligned with this person that I have to baptize every single thing that they do.
00:38:31.039 --> 00:38:32.559
I'm a Jesus follower.
00:38:32.719 --> 00:38:35.119
And so that's wrong, and that's pretty good.
00:38:35.360 --> 00:38:38.960
And that's how that goes because that's what he was able to do.
00:38:40.079 --> 00:38:43.920
And so I'd love for us to close with uh some reflection.
00:38:44.000 --> 00:38:47.679
And so if you don't mind, if you would close your eyes, bow your head.
00:38:48.079 --> 00:38:51.039
I want us just to reflect, and I want you to reflect.
00:38:53.039 --> 00:39:00.000
I want you to consider where you struggle with this and then why you struggle with this.
00:39:00.320 --> 00:39:07.039
Do you struggle to render unto Caesar, our current government?
00:39:07.360 --> 00:39:12.719
Do you struggle to render unto them honor, respect, taxes?
00:39:13.760 --> 00:39:17.039
Do you struggle to render unto them prayers because you don't like them?
00:39:17.599 --> 00:39:24.239
And if so, take this time, repent, and ask him for the forgiveness of those sins.
00:39:24.559 --> 00:39:29.840
You're not being disobedient to them as much as you are, you're being disobedient to God.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:34.400
Or is your struggle the other way?
00:39:34.719 --> 00:39:37.119
Do you like the current governing officials?
00:39:37.599 --> 00:39:45.360
And you have a hard time admitting that our current government and officials are flawed in some ways and make decisions that do not align with the scriptures in Jesus' kingdom.
00:39:45.519 --> 00:39:48.000
Do you struggle to just be honest about that?
00:39:49.360 --> 00:39:55.519
Have you supported things that you know goes against the scriptures?
00:39:56.079 --> 00:39:58.320
If so, take some time.
00:39:58.559 --> 00:39:59.360
Repent.
00:39:59.840 --> 00:40:05.039
Ask him for forgiveness for supporting things that you know that does not align with God's kingdom.
00:40:05.280 --> 00:40:10.239
That I've lived as an American citizen more than I've lived as a heavenly citizen.
00:40:11.280 --> 00:40:17.599
And then last, have you rendered unto Caesar that which is God's alone?
00:40:18.320 --> 00:40:21.440
Have you given him more than you were supposed to?
00:40:23.840 --> 00:40:26.719
Have you given Caesar more of your evangelism?
00:40:28.079 --> 00:40:33.280
Have you given him more of your faith that he or she is going to fix it all?
00:40:33.599 --> 00:40:36.159
Have you given them more of your attention and your time?
00:40:40.960 --> 00:40:48.159
More hope in a human government than you've actually given to prayer that God's kingdom would invade the earth.
00:40:48.480 --> 00:40:51.599
Have you rendered unto you that which is God's?
00:40:51.840 --> 00:40:54.960
And if so, take this time to repent.
00:40:55.280 --> 00:41:00.320
Ask Him for forgiveness, for giving someone else God's rightful place in your life.
00:41:04.559 --> 00:41:07.760
We're gonna have a few moments just in silence, and I'll close this in prayer.
00:41:08.239 --> 00:41:09.360
But you talk to him.
