How does Caleb Williams complete 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards, throw zero interceptions, go a PERFECT 24-for-24 from a clean pocket… and still receive only a 65.0 overall grade from PFF?
On today’s episode of Chicago Bears Central, Haize breaks down the growing debate around Caleb Williams’ Week 6 performance, the Bears’ offensive-line concerns heading into Thursday Night Football, and a New England Patriots roster that is suddenly dealing with major injuries of its own.
Caleb finished the Atlanta game completing 83.3% of his passes for 305 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, earning a 111.2 passer rating. PFF graded the performance at 65.0 overall and 70.7 as a passer. Next Gen Stats also credited Williams with going 24-for-24 for 248 yards from a clean pocket. Pasted text
That 83.3% completion rate was the best in Bears franchise history for a quarterback attempting at least 30 passes, while the clean-pocket performance represented the most attempts without an incompletion in one game since Next Gen Stats began tracking the category in 2018. Pasted text
So is PFF identifying flaws the box score doesn’t show?
Or is the grading system undervaluing exactly the type of efficient quarterback play Bears fans have been begging Caleb to develop?
And Chicago has another problem.
🚨 Jonah Jackson is week-to-week.
Jackson suffered a hip-flexor injury against Atlanta and was listed as an estimated non-participant Monday. Before the Green Bay and Atlanta games, PFF had Jackson carrying an 84.8 overall grade, sixth among guards, and an 82.5 pass-blocking grade, fourth at the position. He had allowed only four pressures and zero sacks through 163 pass-blocking snaps in that earlier snapshot. Pasted text
Now Ben Johnson has a decision:
🔥 Luke Newman, who replaced Jackson against Atlanta?
or
👀 Jordan McFadden, who already has playoff starting experience?
And finally...
🚨 The Patriots are dealing with major injuries.
New England placed Romeo Doubs on injured reserve after his shoulder injury. Doubs had 261 receiving yards, three touchdowns and was averaging 18.6 yards per reception. Pasted text
Their offensive line is also banged up, with Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown listed as estimated non-participants Monday while Morgan Moses was limited. Pasted text
