197. Casting Reflection on Black Mirror - Bete Noire

1
00:00:13,280 --> 00:00:19,560
Hello and welcome to the second
episode of Season 7 of Casting
2
00:00:19,560 --> 00:00:21,720
Reflections on Black Mirror.
Well done.
3
00:00:22,160 --> 00:00:23,600
I've just about got that right,
haven't I?
4
00:00:23,960 --> 00:00:25,720
You don't want to retake it.
You're OK.
5
00:00:25,720 --> 00:00:28,520
I think you cracked it.
Well done.
6
00:00:28,640 --> 00:00:32,840
Yeah, I mean, really, it's only
season 2 of casting reflections,
7
00:00:32,840 --> 00:00:35,920
but let's let's say each season
of the actual show was it?
8
00:00:36,320 --> 00:00:39,160
Yeah, Yeah, that's fine.
How are you done?
9
00:00:39,560 --> 00:00:40,840
I'm good, thank you.
How are you?
10
00:00:41,880 --> 00:00:44,360
I'm all right after butchering
that intro again.
11
00:00:44,680 --> 00:00:47,400
I was just saying that she
before literally just as we were
12
00:00:47,400 --> 00:00:50,400
starting to record.
I wish I'd seen this episode
13
00:00:50,400 --> 00:00:52,160
again because I've just watched
it the once.
14
00:00:52,640 --> 00:00:57,200
And just to shout out now
obviously spoilers for season 7
15
00:00:57,200 --> 00:00:59,520
episode 2 Benoit of Black
Mirror.
16
00:00:59,920 --> 00:01:04,120
I found this an odd episode
overall for a number of reasons.
17
00:01:04,120 --> 00:01:06,000
What?
What should just initial views
18
00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:09,200
of this?
My initial views is and we could
19
00:01:09,200 --> 00:01:12,920
talk a little more into it, but
I really, really liked it up
20
00:01:12,920 --> 00:01:17,080
until it ended.
Like I thought the concept of it
21
00:01:17,080 --> 00:01:22,280
was great and the whole
gaslighting theme was kind of
22
00:01:22,280 --> 00:01:24,240
throughout it, and I thought
that was really clever.
23
00:01:24,800 --> 00:01:28,200
I just hated the way it ended.
I agree with you, I agree with
24
00:01:28,200 --> 00:01:31,560
you, but I also find it's a
difficult one when I was
25
00:01:31,560 --> 00:01:33,800
thinking about how we're going
to talk about this because it
26
00:01:33,800 --> 00:01:38,080
feels like a difficult one to
try to apply to real life, but
27
00:01:38,360 --> 00:01:40,160
but we'll come on to that.
We'll come on to that.
28
00:01:40,600 --> 00:01:45,080
Season 7 Episode 2 Bet Noir
directed by Toby Haynes.
29
00:01:45,080 --> 00:01:50,200
Now, he has directed a few shows
that we've also discussed in the
30
00:01:50,200 --> 00:01:52,040
past ourselves.
He directed an episode of
31
00:01:52,040 --> 00:01:54,160
Sherlock.
He did The Reich and Backfalls
32
00:01:54,680 --> 00:01:59,560
OK.
He also directed the original
33
00:01:59,560 --> 00:02:02,560
USS Callister.
He's therefore directed the
34
00:02:02,840 --> 00:02:04,600
second episode, which I've not
seen.
35
00:02:04,600 --> 00:02:09,639
He directed Demon 79 and he's
also directed a few episodes of
36
00:02:09,639 --> 00:02:13,400
Doctor Who.
Now the two, the two main
37
00:02:13,400 --> 00:02:15,720
actresses we're going to talk
about they've they haven't got
38
00:02:15,720 --> 00:02:17,840
too much in the way of a
filmography.
39
00:02:17,840 --> 00:02:21,920
And I thought our linking to DC
has, sorry, our linking to
40
00:02:21,920 --> 00:02:25,280
Marvel has ended.
But I found a really tenuous
41
00:02:25,280 --> 00:02:28,640
link.
The director has directed some
42
00:02:28,640 --> 00:02:31,600
episodes of Andor, the Disney
Plus.
43
00:02:32,120 --> 00:02:34,360
Disney owns Marvel.
So that's my link.
44
00:02:35,440 --> 00:02:37,640
I'm not, is it?
Is it a link?
45
00:02:37,640 --> 00:02:40,480
It feels a bit of a stretch.
Moving on, Right?
46
00:02:41,920 --> 00:02:47,240
It stars Sienna Kelly as Maria,
Rosie McEwan as Verity.
47
00:02:47,240 --> 00:02:50,880
Now, yeah, this debuted along
with all the other episodes on
48
00:02:50,880 --> 00:02:55,440
the 10th of April of this year.
We get straight into it.
49
00:02:55,800 --> 00:02:59,400
It starts off with Monday, which
is, I don't know, I always like
50
00:02:59,400 --> 00:03:02,240
it when you have these big, bold
things come up on the screen
51
00:03:02,240 --> 00:03:03,760
that tell you what time period
it is.
52
00:03:03,760 --> 00:03:07,160
But this is Monday and we see
Maria and her boyfriend at home.
53
00:03:07,480 --> 00:03:10,520
She's tasting some chocolates
for work.
54
00:03:10,520 --> 00:03:12,840
We find out that she works at a
chocolate company.
55
00:03:12,840 --> 00:03:16,760
She comes up with new flavours
and she's she's trying a new one
56
00:03:16,760 --> 00:03:20,120
she's just created.
It cuts to her at work and
57
00:03:20,120 --> 00:03:23,160
there's a group, A testing group
trying it.
58
00:03:23,240 --> 00:03:28,120
And the final person who comes
in is Verity, who you can tell
59
00:03:28,120 --> 00:03:31,280
Maria recognizes straight away.
They're testing the chocolate
60
00:03:31,280 --> 00:03:32,600
and a lot of the group don't
like it.
61
00:03:32,600 --> 00:03:35,840
But Verity tries it and she
likes it and she she asks
62
00:03:35,840 --> 00:03:38,760
everyone to try it again.
And on the second taste,
63
00:03:38,880 --> 00:03:40,760
suddenly the group starts to
like it.
64
00:03:41,680 --> 00:03:44,400
Verity and Maria meet in the
restrooms where it's revealed
65
00:03:44,600 --> 00:03:47,440
it's been 10 years since they
last met, which was at school.
66
00:03:48,240 --> 00:03:52,080
And Verity says she's going to
apply for an assistant role in
67
00:03:52,080 --> 00:03:54,000
Maria's team.
And Maria looks uncomfortable
68
00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:57,120
and says there is no role.
You see there's tension between
69
00:03:57,120 --> 00:04:01,280
them and you get the impression
maybe there's been some bullying
70
00:04:01,520 --> 00:04:04,080
because often that's the only
reason why someone's going to be
71
00:04:04,080 --> 00:04:07,480
really uncomfortable.
Maria goes back to her computer,
72
00:04:07,800 --> 00:04:10,920
looks on the company website and
sees there is a role going.
73
00:04:11,320 --> 00:04:15,080
We then find out in a
conversation between Maria and
74
00:04:15,080 --> 00:04:20,000
her boyfriend that Verity was
seen as a brainy computer freak
75
00:04:20,079 --> 00:04:23,320
and there was a rumour that she
performed a sex act on a
76
00:04:23,320 --> 00:04:27,280
teacher, that she was an easy
target and one girl in
77
00:04:27,280 --> 00:04:30,440
particular was quite evil
towards Verity.
78
00:04:31,200 --> 00:04:34,080
Maria is suspicious as to why
Verity, who was a brainy
79
00:04:34,080 --> 00:04:37,520
student, has been working as a
travel agent, now wants to be in
80
00:04:37,520 --> 00:04:40,240
food R&D.
So that's Monday.
81
00:04:40,520 --> 00:04:42,240
Anything in that initial bit for
you?
82
00:04:42,240 --> 00:04:44,680
I think I missed an important
part there actually, didn't I?
83
00:04:44,680 --> 00:04:48,960
About the cap?
Yeah, I was going to say that
84
00:04:49,720 --> 00:04:54,600
when she was talking to the
research group, the group only
85
00:04:54,600 --> 00:04:57,480
liked the chocolate because she
suggested they like the
86
00:04:57,480 --> 00:05:00,400
chocolate, and she was.
So she got them to try it again.
87
00:05:00,400 --> 00:05:02,840
And she was like, Oh no, it's so
much better than the second time
88
00:05:02,840 --> 00:05:04,400
round.
Trust me, trust me, trust me.
89
00:05:04,920 --> 00:05:06,920
And at that point, then they all
all loved it.
90
00:05:07,280 --> 00:05:10,400
Yeah, and I'm going to say
something here, and I don't want
91
00:05:10,400 --> 00:05:14,200
you to jump in just yet, but the
important thing I missed is you
92
00:05:14,200 --> 00:05:20,000
see that her boyfriend works at
a chicken shop and he puts a hat
93
00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:23,360
on the counter.
And it was for me, probably
94
00:05:23,360 --> 00:05:25,200
gives a bit away.
It was this place called
95
00:05:25,200 --> 00:05:29,120
Barney's.
So Tuesday comes up, Verity's
96
00:05:29,120 --> 00:05:32,920
being interviewed and to Maria's
concern, she gets a job and
97
00:05:32,920 --> 00:05:36,280
Maria asks her boss to dig
around a bit more into Verity
98
00:05:36,280 --> 00:05:38,960
because again she's saying why
someone who's so clever at
99
00:05:38,960 --> 00:05:42,720
school worked as a a travel
agent now wants to be in her
100
00:05:42,720 --> 00:05:47,000
business.
Cuts to Wednesday and Maria and
101
00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:51,400
her boss meet and he says Verity
checks all came back clean.
102
00:05:52,000 --> 00:05:56,200
He also lets her know that he is
assigned Verity to shadow Maria.
103
00:05:56,760 --> 00:06:00,120
Maria starts by making Verity
list all the ingredients for a
104
00:06:00,120 --> 00:06:04,840
new mallow treat that the
company owner, Mr. Ditta is
105
00:06:04,840 --> 00:06:08,040
interested in and is visiting
them specifically to try.
106
00:06:08,360 --> 00:06:11,720
Maria starts writing off the
list of ingredients and she is
107
00:06:11,720 --> 00:06:14,160
correcting on the spelling by
the computer.
108
00:06:14,160 --> 00:06:16,640
I think it was for a seaweed.
I I didn't write it down because
109
00:06:16,640 --> 00:06:20,360
it was a a weird word.
And her colleagues are then
110
00:06:20,480 --> 00:06:24,280
talking about a chicken shop
called Barney, sorry, called
111
00:06:24,280 --> 00:06:27,640
Bernie's, but Maria corrects him
and says no, it's Barney's.
112
00:06:28,120 --> 00:06:30,880
And then there's an argument,
you know, because as I said, I
113
00:06:30,880 --> 00:06:33,640
also saw the cap at the start of
the episode, which confirmed it
114
00:06:33,640 --> 00:06:37,920
was Barney's.
So they argue it and she googles
115
00:06:37,920 --> 00:06:42,000
it and the results do show that
it's Bernie's, not Barney's.
116
00:06:42,200 --> 00:06:46,160
So she goes home, looks at the
cap and see, sees that it
117
00:06:46,160 --> 00:06:48,360
changed from a Barney's cap to a
Bernie's.
118
00:06:48,360 --> 00:06:50,520
And I think it changed from red
to purple.
119
00:06:51,000 --> 00:06:54,600
Anyway, she's talking to her
boyfriend about this, he starts
120
00:06:54,600 --> 00:06:56,480
relating it to the Mandela
effect.
121
00:06:57,000 --> 00:07:00,240
They have an argument, she
storms out and looks at school
122
00:07:00,240 --> 00:07:03,440
photos where one of them shows
Verity in the background looking
123
00:07:03,440 --> 00:07:06,080
on.
She then decides to message
124
00:07:06,080 --> 00:07:10,120
Natalie Kane, who was the the
girl that was nasty to Verity
125
00:07:10,120 --> 00:07:13,680
and has started the rumours to
let her know about Verity coming
126
00:07:13,680 --> 00:07:16,600
back.
But on the text message, we see
127
00:07:16,600 --> 00:07:19,480
that they haven't spoken for
four years.
128
00:07:19,920 --> 00:07:22,840
Cut to Thursday, bosses visiting
the office.
129
00:07:22,960 --> 00:07:26,080
He tries the new chocolate,
loves it and starts to ask what
130
00:07:26,080 --> 00:07:29,640
the texture is.
Maria says that it's held
131
00:07:29,640 --> 00:07:33,400
together with a derivative from
the seaweed that she'd listed in
132
00:07:33,560 --> 00:07:35,920
the the ingredients.
Oh, and I forgot to say that.
133
00:07:36,120 --> 00:07:38,680
Yeah, Verity was then going to
take the ingredients and bring
134
00:07:38,680 --> 00:07:43,360
it to the chef to make.
When she says that it's a plant
135
00:07:43,360 --> 00:07:46,720
based derivative, the head chef
looks very confused but doesn't
136
00:07:46,720 --> 00:07:49,560
say anything.
Yeah, she she described the
137
00:07:49,560 --> 00:07:53,080
product as having a plant based
derivative in the cook looked
138
00:07:53,720 --> 00:07:58,360
horrified at that point and then
it was realised that it did have
139
00:07:58,480 --> 00:08:02,520
beef based gelatin in it.
They go into the boss's office
140
00:08:02,520 --> 00:08:06,320
and they're arguing and Verity
says that all Maria said was
141
00:08:06,320 --> 00:08:10,320
that it should be non pork
gelatin and Maria is adamant
142
00:08:10,320 --> 00:08:13,640
that she wrote carrageenan.
They're arguing over this.
143
00:08:13,640 --> 00:08:17,240
He asked to see the e-mail that
Maria sent, but again, it says
144
00:08:17,240 --> 00:08:22,800
non pork gelatin, whereas we
know we saw earlier Maria write
145
00:08:23,080 --> 00:08:26,880
the word carrageenan.
She's forced to apologise and
146
00:08:26,880 --> 00:08:30,080
later at home, she says to her
boyfriend that Verity must have
147
00:08:30,080 --> 00:08:33,080
done something as she was always
a computer genius.
148
00:08:33,360 --> 00:08:37,159
Natalie messages her back with a
friend from school, but it's
149
00:08:37,159 --> 00:08:39,480
actually a message from her
husband who informs her that
150
00:08:39,480 --> 00:08:43,280
Natalie had died a few days ago.
Maria calls her back.
151
00:08:43,280 --> 00:08:47,160
Now whilst this isn't a funny
bit in terms of because she's
152
00:08:47,160 --> 00:08:51,640
just found out someone has died,
the the boyfriend was arguing
153
00:08:51,640 --> 00:08:54,360
for her not to call him because
he's going to be grieving.
154
00:08:54,360 --> 00:08:56,640
And you can see the boyfriend
cringing in the background,
155
00:08:56,640 --> 00:08:59,520
can't you, when she calls him up
to ask about him.
156
00:09:00,120 --> 00:09:02,800
So we see him cringing in the
background and and we find out
157
00:09:02,800 --> 00:09:05,760
the friend took her own life
after becoming increasingly
158
00:09:05,760 --> 00:09:09,520
paranoid.
Skip to Friday, Maria goes to
159
00:09:09,520 --> 00:09:14,160
work and only Verity is there
and she asks if she was sitting
160
00:09:14,160 --> 00:09:16,000
out the team meeting that was
going on.
161
00:09:16,520 --> 00:09:20,720
They have an open conversation
about their childhood and Verity
162
00:09:20,720 --> 00:09:23,720
then drinks all of their
colleagues milk chucking it on
163
00:09:23,720 --> 00:09:27,760
the floor and then blames Maria.
Now in a lead up to this, on
164
00:09:27,760 --> 00:09:29,760
previous days there was a
colleague in the office was
165
00:09:29,760 --> 00:09:33,000
constantly complaining that her
milk was being drunk or was
166
00:09:33,000 --> 00:09:34,760
being used up.
Almond.
167
00:09:35,240 --> 00:09:36,320
Milk.
Yeah, Yeah, Almond milk.
168
00:09:36,320 --> 00:09:38,040
That's right.
And yes.
169
00:09:38,040 --> 00:09:41,520
So Verity drinks this milk,
chucks it on the floor, blames
170
00:09:41,520 --> 00:09:44,680
Maria.
When the the rest of the team
171
00:09:44,680 --> 00:09:48,160
come in, you know, Maria starts
saying that Verity's drunk it,
172
00:09:48,160 --> 00:09:50,080
Verity's drunk it, Verity blames
her.
173
00:09:50,920 --> 00:09:54,560
So they go to check the CCTV
footage and it shows Maria
174
00:09:54,560 --> 00:09:56,880
getting quite aggressive,
grabbing the milk and drinking
175
00:09:56,880 --> 00:09:58,960
it.
She says it couldn't be her as
176
00:09:58,960 --> 00:10:03,200
she has a nut allergy.
When she says nut allergy, the
177
00:10:03,200 --> 00:10:06,160
boss and the security guard
don't recognize these words.
178
00:10:06,640 --> 00:10:10,120
So when she googles nut allergy,
it comes up and it says did you
179
00:10:10,120 --> 00:10:14,160
mean not allergy?
So now those the phrase nut
180
00:10:14,160 --> 00:10:18,080
allergy means nothing.
Right at that point she notices
181
00:10:18,080 --> 00:10:23,800
a pendant on Verity that Verity
is fondling and she believes
182
00:10:23,800 --> 00:10:26,120
that it's that that's changing
the facts.
183
00:10:26,120 --> 00:10:28,880
She lunges to stop it.
They're to take it, but it's
184
00:10:28,880 --> 00:10:32,320
stopped and fired.
Now this is where we get to the
185
00:10:32,320 --> 00:10:36,480
bit you were saying that night.
Just just just just before that,
186
00:10:36,840 --> 00:10:38,680
just to kind of some of those
points.
187
00:10:38,680 --> 00:10:42,760
So when every time that reality
is changed, well, what she sees
188
00:10:42,760 --> 00:10:46,920
as reality is being changed.
Verity makes a statement just
189
00:10:46,920 --> 00:10:50,000
before which will sound when I
watched it first time round, I
190
00:10:50,000 --> 00:10:52,240
don't don't know if you felt the
same, but always it felt odd
191
00:10:52,240 --> 00:10:53,920
what she was saying when she was
saying it.
192
00:10:54,360 --> 00:10:56,600
But when you watch it second
time round, it kind of makes
193
00:10:56,600 --> 00:10:59,120
sense.
So when it comes to the nut
194
00:10:59,120 --> 00:11:02,040
allergy piece that the second
before that she goes, no, such
195
00:11:02,040 --> 00:11:05,000
fingers are nut allergy.
And obviously you kind of like
196
00:11:05,320 --> 00:11:08,040
your, your ears pick up a point
because that's nonsense.
197
00:11:08,280 --> 00:11:12,120
And then just before the CCTV
footage was shown, she was like,
198
00:11:12,160 --> 00:11:15,600
it was her, it wasn't me.
And and again, it was like a
199
00:11:15,600 --> 00:11:18,720
useless kind of you didn't need
to say that out loud.
200
00:11:18,960 --> 00:11:21,400
First time around it, it made me
feel a bit weird when she said
201
00:11:21,400 --> 00:11:23,080
it because it just it was out of
place.
202
00:11:23,720 --> 00:11:25,800
But then obviously as the story
goes on, you understand why
203
00:11:25,800 --> 00:11:27,760
she's saying it.
Yeah, and I wish I'd seen it a
204
00:11:27,760 --> 00:11:29,440
second time.
So I think a lot of it would
205
00:11:29,440 --> 00:11:31,640
make sense.
And and I, I guess the one thing
206
00:11:31,640 --> 00:11:34,800
I haven't stressed is that
Maria, as the days have gone on,
207
00:11:34,800 --> 00:11:37,640
has become increasing
increasingly more.
208
00:11:38,640 --> 00:11:41,160
I guess we would say the word
paranoid because as we said,
209
00:11:41,160 --> 00:11:44,920
she, she was convinced her
boyfriend's, that chicken shop
210
00:11:44,920 --> 00:11:46,800
was called Barney's and then it
was Bernie's.
211
00:11:47,240 --> 00:11:51,840
The incident where she knows she
emailed a specific ingredient to
212
00:11:51,840 --> 00:11:54,720
Verity and when they've looked
at the e-mail, that word wasn't
213
00:11:54,720 --> 00:11:56,520
there.
I mean, the big one is obviously
214
00:11:56,520 --> 00:12:00,800
the changing of the, the CCTV
from Verity because they were
215
00:12:00,800 --> 00:12:03,600
getting on.
I think they'd reconciled from
216
00:12:03,600 --> 00:12:06,360
Verity drinking the milk and
throwing it on the floor to
217
00:12:06,600 --> 00:12:08,880
Maria drinking the milk and
throwing it on the floor.
218
00:12:08,880 --> 00:12:13,320
So all this is increasingly
making Maria think she's going
219
00:12:13,320 --> 00:12:17,800
crazy, doesn't she?
So that night she breaks into
220
00:12:18,080 --> 00:12:22,880
Verity's home and she discovers
a massive server room and a box
221
00:12:22,880 --> 00:12:26,080
of pendants that are identical
to the one Verity was wearing.
222
00:12:27,040 --> 00:12:30,280
When Verity discovers Maria
hiding under the bed, because
223
00:12:30,280 --> 00:12:33,600
obviously Maria sees Verity
still there, she hides under the
224
00:12:33,600 --> 00:12:35,920
bed.
Verity explains that after
225
00:12:35,920 --> 00:12:38,920
finishing school, she became an
expert programmer.
226
00:12:39,800 --> 00:12:43,960
She created a quantum computer
in her home that can shift her
227
00:12:43,960 --> 00:12:47,040
to any timeline she desires
through real time data she
228
00:12:47,040 --> 00:12:51,360
gathered using the pendant as
the remote, essentially meaning
229
00:12:51,360 --> 00:12:54,120
she could do whatever she wants.
She could change anything to her
230
00:12:54,120 --> 00:12:56,320
will.
She's been changing the
231
00:12:56,320 --> 00:12:59,800
timelines around Maria in an
attempt to drive her to suicide.
232
00:13:00,240 --> 00:13:04,160
Verity reveals she did the same
thing to Natalie as revenge for
233
00:13:04,160 --> 00:13:08,200
the rumour that Maria started.
Maria tries to reason with her,
234
00:13:08,320 --> 00:13:12,200
but Verity reveals she has tried
every path in life, with none
235
00:13:12,200 --> 00:13:17,080
being as satisfying as revenge.
Maria attempts to attack Verity,
236
00:13:17,280 --> 00:13:20,600
but Verity alters reality to
have armed police arrive,
237
00:13:21,160 --> 00:13:25,720
placing a knife in Maria's hand.
While restrained, Maria grabs an
238
00:13:25,720 --> 00:13:28,680
officer's gun and shoots Verity
in the face.
239
00:13:29,200 --> 00:13:32,960
She quickly grabs A pendant,
uses Verity's fingerprint to
240
00:13:32,960 --> 00:13:36,760
shift to a timeline where it
works for her, and after making
241
00:13:36,760 --> 00:13:40,480
the police officers believe that
Verity was the attacker, she
242
00:13:40,480 --> 00:13:43,200
shifts reality several times to
her own benefit.
243
00:13:43,200 --> 00:13:46,880
Now one thing that was said
earlier on when she finds out
244
00:13:47,400 --> 00:13:50,400
that Verity's changing timeline,
doesn't Verity say at one point
245
00:13:50,400 --> 00:13:53,440
I even made myself Empress of
the Universe, didn't she?
246
00:13:53,840 --> 00:13:58,000
And it wasn't as fun as revenge.
So the very final scene is
247
00:13:58,000 --> 00:14:02,680
Verity, sorry, is Maria making
herself the Empress of the
248
00:14:02,680 --> 00:14:06,360
Universe.
So that's a really, really quick
249
00:14:06,360 --> 00:14:11,160
synopsis, but I think this
episode probably has got quite a
250
00:14:11,160 --> 00:14:14,440
quick summary.
So ultimately woman makes
251
00:14:14,440 --> 00:14:18,680
another woman go crazy by
changing timelines around her to
252
00:14:18,720 --> 00:14:21,560
make her that to doubt
everything she currently
253
00:14:21,560 --> 00:14:24,360
believes, right?
Yeah, that's essentially it.
254
00:14:25,160 --> 00:14:27,000
So what what?
What were your kind of initial
255
00:14:27,000 --> 00:14:28,120
thoughts?
So when you finished the
256
00:14:28,120 --> 00:14:32,280
episode, how did you feel?
Exactly like you, I love the
257
00:14:32,280 --> 00:14:34,160
idea of it.
I love the premise.
258
00:14:34,480 --> 00:14:37,440
I just saw the ending.
I I don't know what I thought
259
00:14:37,440 --> 00:14:39,560
about the ending.
I know what he was trying to do,
260
00:14:39,560 --> 00:14:41,400
but.
Do do you think so?
261
00:14:41,400 --> 00:14:44,920
We've discussed many black bear
episodes in the past where we've
262
00:14:44,920 --> 00:14:47,800
said I think it would have been
better if we ended it like this.
263
00:14:48,280 --> 00:14:50,600
On this one, I was disappointed
with the ending and I couldn't
264
00:14:50,600 --> 00:14:53,080
think how I could end it.
So it was satisfactory.
265
00:14:53,240 --> 00:14:55,080
Do you think there's an
alternative way you could?
266
00:14:55,240 --> 00:14:58,960
Because because in my mind, I
had such a good like first 95%
267
00:14:58,960 --> 00:15:02,920
and like, this episode is great.
And then she goes from being
268
00:15:02,920 --> 00:15:06,040
bullied and paranoid to Empress
of the Universe in the space of
269
00:15:06,040 --> 00:15:09,760
about 40 seconds.
And I'm like, and when that
270
00:15:09,760 --> 00:15:13,560
episode finishes, it's like, oh
for goodness sake, like that's,
271
00:15:13,600 --> 00:15:17,160
that was ridiculous.
It's an interesting 1, isn't it?
272
00:15:17,160 --> 00:15:21,600
Because one thing I didn't like
is because we do find out that
273
00:15:21,600 --> 00:15:25,520
Maria and that the other friend
were bullies.
274
00:15:25,520 --> 00:15:28,280
I mean, I think we find out it
was actually Maria blamed the
275
00:15:28,480 --> 00:15:31,320
other woman, that Natalie is a
person who started the rumour
276
00:15:31,320 --> 00:15:33,320
about the sex act on the
teacher.
277
00:15:33,840 --> 00:15:35,360
I think we find out it was
Maria, don't we?
278
00:15:35,360 --> 00:15:39,160
So the bully, the bully one at
the end of it, that's one thing
279
00:15:39,160 --> 00:15:42,640
I don't like.
But yeah, it was just that that
280
00:15:42,640 --> 00:15:47,280
whole if they'd have maybe
showed it over like a like a do
281
00:15:47,280 --> 00:15:49,960
it over a few minutes and
showing her getting increasingly
282
00:15:49,960 --> 00:15:52,640
crazy with power.
And that's then when she made
283
00:15:52,640 --> 00:15:54,080
herself the Empress of the
universe.
284
00:15:54,080 --> 00:15:57,480
But she just goes from having a
struggle finding out about this
285
00:15:57,800 --> 00:16:00,320
quantum computer, which she
doesn't even question, right.
286
00:16:00,320 --> 00:16:02,920
It's just, oh, you've created a
quantum computer that can change
287
00:16:02,920 --> 00:16:06,280
time to them making herself
that.
288
00:16:06,280 --> 00:16:11,600
I mean maybe I think I wonder if
a better ending and maybe more
289
00:16:11,600 --> 00:16:16,080
fitting with Black Mirror is
that Verity then ultimately
290
00:16:16,080 --> 00:16:20,960
erases Maria from everyone's
memories and she becomes Maria.
291
00:16:21,280 --> 00:16:24,800
Yeah, I think what would have
been quite good is if I'd given
292
00:16:24,920 --> 00:16:27,000
Verity a bit more of a back
story.
293
00:16:27,000 --> 00:16:29,520
So you felt sorry for her
character to start with.
294
00:16:29,960 --> 00:16:33,400
And then you'd kind of get to
the episode end and I would
295
00:16:33,400 --> 00:16:35,600
almost have like, like you said,
the bully one.
296
00:16:35,640 --> 00:16:39,720
At the end of the day, you you
kind of find that out later on.
297
00:16:40,280 --> 00:16:43,160
But always if you felt sorry for
Verity and then she kind of won,
298
00:16:43,520 --> 00:16:45,800
you know, not to the point where
she committed suicide, but in a,
299
00:16:45,800 --> 00:16:49,440
in a scenario where, you know,
Maria's left unhappy, I think
300
00:16:49,440 --> 00:16:50,960
that might have been a better
ending.
301
00:16:51,760 --> 00:16:54,480
Or that they kept changing
timelines, that they're having a
302
00:16:54,480 --> 00:16:58,000
battle with these pendants and
they changed timelines so much
303
00:16:58,000 --> 00:17:00,120
so it just the world rips apart
or something.
304
00:17:01,320 --> 00:17:03,960
I I.
Also think they could have drawn
305
00:17:03,960 --> 00:17:05,880
not drawn out.
That's probably the wrong word,
306
00:17:05,880 --> 00:17:09,880
but they could have really
explored that, you know, the
307
00:17:09,880 --> 00:17:11,720
little things making you go
crazy.
308
00:17:11,720 --> 00:17:13,680
I don't think they did that long
enough because I think it
309
00:17:13,920 --> 00:17:17,920
because when they did the CCTV,
because all that other stuff on
310
00:17:17,920 --> 00:17:19,560
there, you would question
yourself, wouldn't you?
311
00:17:19,560 --> 00:17:22,839
You would like, oh, maybe I
didn't send that e-mail if the
312
00:17:22,839 --> 00:17:25,599
evidence is here, maybe I've
completely remembered that wrong
313
00:17:25,599 --> 00:17:28,040
or maybe I didn't write that
ingredient down.
314
00:17:28,040 --> 00:17:29,400
Maybe I just remembered that
wrong.
315
00:17:29,680 --> 00:17:31,280
All that stuff is kind of
believable.
316
00:17:31,280 --> 00:17:34,080
What you would doubt yourself
the second the CCTV got
317
00:17:34,080 --> 00:17:36,320
involved.
At that point it's like
318
00:17:36,320 --> 00:17:39,000
blatantly obvious.
It's, it's almost like we've
319
00:17:39,000 --> 00:17:40,480
rushed the last few minutes,
isn't it?
320
00:17:40,960 --> 00:17:43,400
That's a really good point
because everything up till then
321
00:17:43,400 --> 00:17:47,280
maybe apart from the the nut
allergy, I still find that funny
322
00:17:47,280 --> 00:17:49,160
where they said, do you mean nut
allergy?
323
00:17:49,600 --> 00:17:53,440
Yeah, maybe if they made it more
of a small, small steps, small
324
00:17:53,440 --> 00:17:55,520
steps, maybe do it over a couple
of weeks.
325
00:17:55,720 --> 00:17:57,440
And it's just these little
things because we've all done
326
00:17:57,440 --> 00:17:59,000
that.
Like you said, you know, you
327
00:17:59,000 --> 00:18:00,880
think someone has said something
to you.
328
00:18:00,880 --> 00:18:03,440
When you say you go back to
them, they say, no, I didn't say
329
00:18:03,440 --> 00:18:05,160
that.
Or you think you've read
330
00:18:05,160 --> 00:18:07,000
something, but you've
misinterpreted it.
331
00:18:07,040 --> 00:18:09,600
Misinterpreted it.
So basically you're you're
332
00:18:09,600 --> 00:18:13,000
advocating her drawing out the
poor woman's torture a little
333
00:18:13,000 --> 00:18:15,640
bit more, aren't you?
Yeah, but with the caveat.
334
00:18:15,640 --> 00:18:19,160
But we feel sorry for her more
by seeing more of her back story
335
00:18:19,360 --> 00:18:21,840
because she just kind of, it
almost introduces herself as a
336
00:18:21,840 --> 00:18:23,920
bully and we don't understand
why.
337
00:18:25,520 --> 00:18:29,160
I'd like to hear a back story.
It's like I said, really, really
338
00:18:29,160 --> 00:18:31,880
really good idea.
The other thing I found weird
339
00:18:31,880 --> 00:18:35,200
about it though, is, and I know
you shouldn't think about things
340
00:18:35,200 --> 00:18:38,960
like this in a, in a show like
Black Mirror, but you know, this
341
00:18:38,960 --> 00:18:42,720
woman, OK, she was a computer
nerd, but she's created a
342
00:18:42,760 --> 00:18:45,360
quantum computer that can shift
timelines.
343
00:18:45,680 --> 00:18:49,240
You know, it's not even said
that that she's worked for a
344
00:18:49,240 --> 00:18:51,000
company or or something.
It's just.
345
00:18:51,000 --> 00:18:52,960
That or she's stolen it or been
given it.
346
00:18:52,960 --> 00:18:57,000
It's yeah, yeah, it's a bit.
That bit's a bit silly, isn't
347
00:18:57,000 --> 00:18:58,840
it?
I said to you not to jump in at
348
00:18:58,840 --> 00:19:01,680
the start, but the whole thing
about the chicken shop, do you
349
00:19:01,680 --> 00:19:03,760
want to say talk about that?
Yeah.
350
00:19:03,760 --> 00:19:07,200
So essentially Netflix, I don't,
I mean, so I don't think Black
351
00:19:07,200 --> 00:19:10,440
Mirror have done this before.
Netflix had done this before,
352
00:19:10,440 --> 00:19:14,320
but they've released 2 alternate
episodes, haven't they?
353
00:19:14,680 --> 00:19:19,480
Whereby in one episode it
started off being Bernie's and
354
00:19:19,480 --> 00:19:22,160
turned out to be Barney's with
the change reality and in
355
00:19:22,160 --> 00:19:24,440
another episode it did it the
other way round so it was
356
00:19:24,440 --> 00:19:31,320
Barney's and became Bernie's.
Now when I we were texting about
357
00:19:31,320 --> 00:19:37,680
this we saw different versions.
However, when I re watched it I
358
00:19:37,680 --> 00:19:39,520
had the version that you just
explained.
359
00:19:39,880 --> 00:19:42,640
Now I'm beginning to question
myself whether I had the the
360
00:19:42,640 --> 00:19:45,360
version the other the other way
right way round in the first
361
00:19:45,400 --> 00:19:47,280
place.
But that's what I think this
362
00:19:47,280 --> 00:19:49,240
does good.
And that's what I will give this
363
00:19:49,240 --> 00:19:51,080
episode credit for doing.
So yeah, there were two
364
00:19:51,080 --> 00:19:53,480
versions.
I had the Barneys that turned
365
00:19:53,480 --> 00:19:54,960
into Bernie's, and then I'll
message you.
366
00:19:54,960 --> 00:19:57,600
You said you had the Bernie's
that turned into Barneys.
367
00:19:58,120 --> 00:20:00,520
This time round when I'm
watching it, I heard her say
368
00:20:00,920 --> 00:20:05,000
it's definitely Barney's because
it's like a barn where you keep
369
00:20:05,000 --> 00:20:08,240
animals.
And now I wish I'd known what
370
00:20:08,240 --> 00:20:10,000
she said in the other version,
because she would have said
371
00:20:10,000 --> 00:20:11,560
something.
She would have said something
372
00:20:11,560 --> 00:20:13,400
different.
This is what I was going to say.
373
00:20:13,400 --> 00:20:17,840
So obviously this whole episode
is on playing on gaslighting and
374
00:20:17,840 --> 00:20:23,200
the Mandela Effect, right?
And imagine if you and I, we'd
375
00:20:23,200 --> 00:20:25,920
come on and we didn't know about
that.
376
00:20:26,400 --> 00:20:29,200
And I'm not saying Barney's turn
into Bernie's.
377
00:20:29,200 --> 00:20:31,240
You're probably sitting there.
You would either one or two
378
00:20:31,240 --> 00:20:33,640
things if you didn't want to say
anything because you'd think,
379
00:20:33,640 --> 00:20:35,920
did you get it wrong?
I would have corrected you.
380
00:20:35,920 --> 00:20:37,760
Well, I.
Was going to say, yeah, knowing
381
00:20:37,760 --> 00:20:40,320
you, you'd be like, daddy,
you're feeling all right.
382
00:20:40,320 --> 00:20:42,680
You know, it was Bernie's into,
into Barneys.
383
00:20:43,280 --> 00:20:46,880
Yeah, I I just think that that
was a clever little thing.
384
00:20:46,880 --> 00:20:49,560
I think at the start the, the
problem is in this day and age
385
00:20:49,560 --> 00:20:51,720
with the Internet, these things
come out really quickly.
386
00:20:51,720 --> 00:20:55,800
But yeah, Can you imagine if you
or even if you you weren't doing
387
00:20:55,800 --> 00:20:58,200
this episode and you just
decided to watch it again, would
388
00:20:58,200 --> 00:21:00,320
you be questioning yourself?
I don't.
389
00:21:00,600 --> 00:21:02,080
I don't think I would have
picked up on it.
390
00:21:02,560 --> 00:21:05,880
I I feel like we concentrate on
these episodes because we're
391
00:21:05,880 --> 00:21:08,600
we're going to talk to them and
we look out for these details.
392
00:21:09,280 --> 00:21:11,200
I'm not convinced.
If I was just a casual viewer, I
393
00:21:11,200 --> 00:21:13,440
would have noticed it.
It's not the sort of detail you
394
00:21:13,440 --> 00:21:16,680
would talk about either, right?
It's not like, you know, you
395
00:21:16,680 --> 00:21:19,160
wouldn't go and analyse it to
the detail that we've just done
396
00:21:19,160 --> 00:21:21,520
on this this podcast.
We wouldn't talk about that
397
00:21:21,520 --> 00:21:23,240
scene.
I wonder if you watched it
398
00:21:23,240 --> 00:21:26,240
quickly in succession though,
like if you've had a few weeks
399
00:21:26,240 --> 00:21:29,720
between, like I might not watch
it for another few months now so
400
00:21:29,720 --> 00:21:32,000
I won't remember.
But if you were to watch it,
401
00:21:32,280 --> 00:21:35,200
like sometimes I will watch his
episode twice back-to-back,
402
00:21:35,200 --> 00:21:38,280
1:00, so I can add some notes
and two, just to enjoy it.
403
00:21:38,720 --> 00:21:41,840
Yeah, indeed.
Now if they'd done two versions
404
00:21:41,840 --> 00:21:44,160
where the two actresses were
completely reversed.
405
00:21:44,680 --> 00:21:48,600
Yeah, that would.
That would get us that.
406
00:21:48,640 --> 00:21:50,160
I think I'd notice that like
that that.
407
00:21:50,280 --> 00:21:53,560
'D be brilliant.
Imagine doing a imagine doing a
408
00:21:53,560 --> 00:21:55,360
second watch of that and you're
like, what?
409
00:21:57,280 --> 00:21:59,760
You would be, I think you'd be,
you would question your sanity,
410
00:21:59,760 --> 00:22:00,960
wouldn't you?
And then you would look it up on
411
00:22:00,960 --> 00:22:03,560
the Internet and you'd go, oh
that, that's quite clever.
412
00:22:03,640 --> 00:22:06,200
That's actually class.
That would be the far better
413
00:22:06,200 --> 00:22:08,080
option.
Yeah, that'd be the far better
414
00:22:08,080 --> 00:22:09,920
option.
The whole thing.
415
00:22:09,920 --> 00:22:11,880
This got me thinking.
So you know, you know the
416
00:22:11,880 --> 00:22:14,440
Mandela Effect where people
remember something to be
417
00:22:14,440 --> 00:22:18,040
different to what it is or they
find something out and they
418
00:22:18,040 --> 00:22:20,800
they're sure their memory tells
them it was something different.
419
00:22:20,800 --> 00:22:24,040
Now long time listeners of this
show knows that, knows that I
420
00:22:24,360 --> 00:22:26,440
did an episode on the Mandela
Effect.
421
00:22:27,000 --> 00:22:29,760
And The thing is, you know,
we've we've discussed like
422
00:22:29,760 --> 00:22:32,200
things are going streaming,
there's more and more streaming
423
00:22:32,640 --> 00:22:36,000
on the streaming.
People are changing things and
424
00:22:36,000 --> 00:22:39,640
they don't have to tell people
like Stranger Things in the last
425
00:22:39,640 --> 00:22:43,440
series that came out, directors
changed some of the effects in
426
00:22:43,440 --> 00:22:46,080
the some of the episodes, but
didn't tell people what or
427
00:22:46,080 --> 00:22:47,160
where.
They just did it.
428
00:22:47,160 --> 00:22:48,600
They were, I think they weren't
happy.
429
00:22:49,200 --> 00:22:51,960
So again, if you're watching
that and then you rewatch it and
430
00:22:51,960 --> 00:22:54,120
you notice something's
different, you're going to think
431
00:22:54,120 --> 00:22:58,600
that's a Mandela Effect, right?
And there was that show on
432
00:22:58,600 --> 00:23:00,120
Apple.
I don't know if you watched it.
433
00:23:00,120 --> 00:23:02,440
Is it with that Rob Mcaleny in
it?
434
00:23:03,160 --> 00:23:08,120
So it's called Mythic Quest.
The show got cancelled after the
435
00:23:08,120 --> 00:23:11,960
last season so they weren't
happy with the ending so they
436
00:23:11,960 --> 00:23:15,840
redone the last episode and have
uploaded it and took away the
437
00:23:15,840 --> 00:23:21,000
original ending.
So again, are we in an age now
438
00:23:21,000 --> 00:23:25,120
where these things are happening
and we are going to start
439
00:23:25,120 --> 00:23:28,000
questioning ourselves?
But because streaming can change
440
00:23:28,000 --> 00:23:31,160
at any point, we're starting to
doubt our our minds.
441
00:23:31,520 --> 00:23:34,200
Before I come on, I did try and
think there was a way that I
442
00:23:34,200 --> 00:23:37,720
could drop things on into this
conversation to, to question
443
00:23:37,720 --> 00:23:42,640
your sanity and see if I could
kind of catch you out on I, I, I
444
00:23:42,640 --> 00:23:44,520
couldn't think of one in time
to, to do it.
445
00:23:44,720 --> 00:23:47,160
Oh, I've don't worry.
I think my, my, my brain's so
446
00:23:47,160 --> 00:23:49,960
tired tonight.
I think already some of the the
447
00:23:49,960 --> 00:23:53,000
mistakes I've made during this
is is has been fine.
448
00:23:53,800 --> 00:23:56,880
I mean, I like the episode in a
whole because I said guests like
449
00:23:56,880 --> 00:24:00,640
Mandela Effect streaming fake
news and Big Brother.
450
00:24:00,640 --> 00:24:05,320
That sort of thing has always
been something that we as people
451
00:24:05,320 --> 00:24:08,960
have been fascinated.
We've nothing faint news in the
452
00:24:08,960 --> 00:24:12,240
last few years since COVID
especially has become massive,
453
00:24:12,240 --> 00:24:14,120
right?
But it's you see what I'm saying
454
00:24:14,120 --> 00:24:16,880
that it's a hard episode, I
think to try to apply to real
455
00:24:16,880 --> 00:24:19,640
life because it would then mean
we'd need to have one of these
456
00:24:19,880 --> 00:24:21,760
clickers.
So if you had one of these
457
00:24:21,760 --> 00:24:24,040
pendants, I bet you'd have a
field day, right?
458
00:24:25,080 --> 00:24:27,920
Yeah, what would you do with it?
What wouldn't you do with it?
459
00:24:28,000 --> 00:24:30,960
I think.
I guess I guess if if any if the
460
00:24:30,960 --> 00:24:33,760
scope wasn't everything then.
This is a thing.
461
00:24:33,760 --> 00:24:35,400
It's a proper cheat code, isn't
it?
462
00:24:35,800 --> 00:24:38,320
Well, other than her untimely
death, there was no
463
00:24:38,320 --> 00:24:43,240
ramifications for Verity
constantly using it, was there?
464
00:24:43,960 --> 00:24:47,200
Yeah, yeah, agree.
No penalty I is I guess is what
465
00:24:47,200 --> 00:24:49,680
I mean.
And do you think she aged?
466
00:24:50,080 --> 00:24:52,000
Like, do you think she was just
living one life or do you think
467
00:24:52,000 --> 00:24:53,560
she kept on going back to do it
again?
468
00:24:53,760 --> 00:24:56,280
That bit wasn't clear, was it?
No, I got the impression it was
469
00:24:56,280 --> 00:24:58,160
just one life but she was just
able.
470
00:24:58,880 --> 00:25:01,960
And she didn't undo some of the
stuff that she said.
471
00:25:01,960 --> 00:25:05,880
So she also like, got her speak
in Chinese, didn't she?
472
00:25:06,080 --> 00:25:08,040
And then she didn't undo the
Chinese.
473
00:25:08,040 --> 00:25:09,760
She just suddenly started
speaking English again.
474
00:25:10,200 --> 00:25:13,880
Oh, and I guess the important
thing is to say that I think
475
00:25:13,880 --> 00:25:17,440
what a secondary watch will do
is as you pointed out in the
476
00:25:17,440 --> 00:25:21,840
focus group where she got people
to to change their minds about
477
00:25:21,840 --> 00:25:25,360
the chocolate is you can see
when she's she's touching that
478
00:25:25,360 --> 00:25:28,040
pendant is ultimately when she's
activating.
479
00:25:29,000 --> 00:25:30,640
Yeah.
And and then you can see when
480
00:25:30,640 --> 00:25:34,120
she's influencing.
So on the on the Barney's thing,
481
00:25:34,120 --> 00:25:36,680
she made a slide comment saying
actually I think it was
482
00:25:36,680 --> 00:25:39,400
Barney's.
And you don't notice that on the
483
00:25:39,640 --> 00:25:41,960
on the 1st watch.
The second watch it's definitely
484
00:25:41,960 --> 00:25:44,480
worth a go to to notice when
she's influencing the room.
485
00:25:44,880 --> 00:25:47,560
I guess, yeah, If you have that
power, it's it's a small little
486
00:25:47,560 --> 00:25:48,880
things.
Like you said, you could just
487
00:25:48,880 --> 00:25:51,400
change anything you have.
You have a bad conversation at
488
00:25:51,400 --> 00:25:52,960
work, you just change it and you
say no.
489
00:25:53,040 --> 00:25:54,920
That project I had to do was
perfect.
490
00:25:56,440 --> 00:25:58,560
Do you not find though, maybe
going off onto a bit of a
491
00:25:58,560 --> 00:26:01,520
tangent here with the whole
gaslighting thing, People don't
492
00:26:01,520 --> 00:26:04,560
have pendants, but I feel like
this happens a bit in today's
493
00:26:04,760 --> 00:26:08,360
world in, in the because we both
work in office environments.
494
00:26:08,720 --> 00:26:11,480
Do you not feel it happens
sometimes on the small scale
495
00:26:11,480 --> 00:26:13,400
kind of gaslight?
It's like, well, no, you said
496
00:26:13,400 --> 00:26:16,000
this and I said this and so and
so said this.
497
00:26:16,000 --> 00:26:20,120
And there's always this
influence in by stretching the
498
00:26:20,120 --> 00:26:22,480
truth a little bit, by
exaggerating just that little
499
00:26:22,480 --> 00:26:25,040
bit to to kind of change the
tone or the message.
500
00:26:26,240 --> 00:26:29,880
Yeah, especially if something
isn't written down, you know,
501
00:26:30,160 --> 00:26:31,800
anyone can say I told you to do
this.
502
00:26:31,800 --> 00:26:34,960
And especially if it's a
position of power to somebody
503
00:26:35,480 --> 00:26:39,360
under their power, then that
person is probably more likely
504
00:26:39,360 --> 00:26:43,040
to doubt themselves, right, The
person who who's been spoken to.
505
00:26:43,920 --> 00:26:47,560
So, yeah, I think people always
have been, whether it's to cover
506
00:26:47,560 --> 00:26:51,480
up their own mistake maybe or,
or just because they generally
507
00:26:51,480 --> 00:26:53,400
believe it.
Yeah, you must have little
508
00:26:53,400 --> 00:26:57,560
instances of this happen all the
time, but yeah, I I think you'd
509
00:26:57,560 --> 00:27:01,440
have fun with it.
I think I was going to say,
510
00:27:01,440 --> 00:27:03,440
think of all the football
results we could change.
511
00:27:05,320 --> 00:27:08,680
Football results but but also as
well because again we, we both
512
00:27:08,680 --> 00:27:11,160
work in IT and we both work in
kind of support service
513
00:27:11,160 --> 00:27:15,120
operational areas.
We could just wipe out any any
514
00:27:15,120 --> 00:27:16,880
bad issue that we encountered.
Right.
515
00:27:16,960 --> 00:27:19,360
Yeah, Yeah, that's not really an
issue.
516
00:27:19,760 --> 00:27:22,760
It wasn't me.
I just felt the ending was very
517
00:27:22,760 --> 00:27:25,200
rushed.
Like I said, that Maria quickly
518
00:27:25,200 --> 00:27:27,960
got a plan together and yeah,
just that Empress of the
519
00:27:27,960 --> 00:27:30,720
Universe thing felt just so
silly and forced.
520
00:27:30,720 --> 00:27:34,880
And I thought the other thing
was when she shot that Verity.
521
00:27:34,880 --> 00:27:37,040
That was quite gruesome as well,
wasn't it?
522
00:27:37,040 --> 00:27:38,520
It was.
Yes, it was, wasn't it?
523
00:27:38,520 --> 00:27:40,360
It was a bit.
It was a bit of a shock.
524
00:27:40,720 --> 00:27:42,480
Came out of the blue, didn't it?
It was.
525
00:27:42,840 --> 00:27:45,480
It was quite it was quite gory,
quite graphic.
526
00:27:45,640 --> 00:27:49,480
See, I don't think they didn't.
I didn't need to kill her off, I
527
00:27:49,480 --> 00:27:51,920
just think like seeing her
suffer in a prison cell or
528
00:27:51,920 --> 00:27:56,240
something along those lines
would have been OK as an end
529
00:27:56,240 --> 00:27:57,320
then.
I just don't think we needed a
530
00:27:57,320 --> 00:27:59,760
death in there.
Yeah, they could have arrested
531
00:27:59,760 --> 00:28:02,320
her, put her in a prison.
Then you can find out that maybe
532
00:28:02,320 --> 00:28:05,000
she had or, or put her in the
back of a police van and you
533
00:28:05,000 --> 00:28:08,160
find out she's got one of those
pendants hidden in a shoe or
534
00:28:08,160 --> 00:28:09,360
something.
Yeah.
535
00:28:09,760 --> 00:28:12,840
Yeah, agreed.
And like they, they made a point
536
00:28:12,840 --> 00:28:16,400
of saying like the pendants are
like programmed by fingerprint
537
00:28:16,400 --> 00:28:19,960
or whatever it was.
Yeah, and Ravine, 5 seconds,
538
00:28:19,960 --> 00:28:22,000
that was undone.
So it's like, why?
539
00:28:22,040 --> 00:28:24,480
Why even bother putting the
limitation on in the 1st place
540
00:28:25,000 --> 00:28:28,400
like and?
I also like the fact that in a
541
00:28:28,400 --> 00:28:31,600
bedroom, she had a box with
about 15 of them or something,
542
00:28:31,600 --> 00:28:33,440
wasn't it?
It was like a whole jewelry box
543
00:28:33,440 --> 00:28:35,360
full of them.
It's like how many of you lost
544
00:28:35,360 --> 00:28:38,080
in the past?
Yeah, exactly.
545
00:28:38,960 --> 00:28:41,000
What she could have, what she
could have done though, is just
546
00:28:41,080 --> 00:28:43,440
wiped out the bullying thing
from school.
547
00:28:43,720 --> 00:28:45,480
Like she didn't need to get
revenge.
548
00:28:45,680 --> 00:28:47,360
She didn't.
She didn't need to get revenge.
549
00:28:47,360 --> 00:28:49,520
She could have just gone into a
universe where that just didn't
550
00:28:49,520 --> 00:28:51,800
happen.
Quite, quite a short episode,
551
00:28:51,800 --> 00:28:53,920
but yeah.
Yeah, true, true.
552
00:28:54,040 --> 00:28:55,000
You know what?
Yeah.
553
00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:58,280
You see that is again Dan you've
you can't really sensible
554
00:28:58,280 --> 00:29:00,640
suggestion.
I think too much about these
555
00:29:00,640 --> 00:29:04,760
things.
I mean, there was a few things I
556
00:29:04,760 --> 00:29:06,800
was going to point out.
There was a few Easter eggs in
557
00:29:06,800 --> 00:29:09,680
there.
So I I don't think I picked up
558
00:29:09,680 --> 00:29:12,240
any of these.
So did did you pick up any that
559
00:29:12,240 --> 00:29:13,280
you want to shower?
I didn't.
560
00:29:13,280 --> 00:29:15,080
I didn't pick up any Easter
eggs.
561
00:29:15,160 --> 00:29:17,560
I thought there might have been
some Easter eggs in the name of
562
00:29:17,560 --> 00:29:20,160
the company, the name of the
brand, but I don't recall there
563
00:29:20,160 --> 00:29:22,120
being but.
No, so the only thing I think
564
00:29:22,120 --> 00:29:25,320
with the brand was that it was
referenced in the previous
565
00:29:25,320 --> 00:29:27,280
episode.
Common people.
566
00:29:27,640 --> 00:29:30,640
And I haven't checked these, but
you know, I've got no ways doubt
567
00:29:30,640 --> 00:29:33,600
it.
But Barney's Chicken is where
568
00:29:33,760 --> 00:29:37,040
Kenny worked in season 3
episodes Shut Up and Dance.
569
00:29:37,440 --> 00:29:39,880
OK.
A Verity's previous work
570
00:29:39,880 --> 00:29:43,480
experience on a LinkedIn profile
includes Wayhaven Travel, and
571
00:29:43,480 --> 00:29:46,240
that's a hotel chain featured in
Shutu and Dance.
572
00:29:46,680 --> 00:29:51,040
Outside the data testing lab is
a Gemini Orbits poster, which is
573
00:29:51,040 --> 00:29:53,320
a callback to the doomed
spacecraft.
574
00:29:53,320 --> 00:29:58,120
And beyond the sea, the data
building is situated opposite a
575
00:29:58,120 --> 00:30:02,040
Tuckersoft billboard and that's
the maker of the game that was
576
00:30:02,040 --> 00:30:04,160
the source of Black Mirror Banda
Snatch.
577
00:30:04,520 --> 00:30:07,800
When Maria's boyfriend plays
with AVR, the creatures of the
578
00:30:07,800 --> 00:30:11,400
video gaming placing which is a
later episode can be heard.
579
00:30:12,600 --> 00:30:15,920
The organic milk is the same
brand as a chocolate milk Robert
580
00:30:15,920 --> 00:30:19,560
Daly drinks in USS Callister and
it makes an appearance in the
581
00:30:19,560 --> 00:30:23,520
second one.
And the company Maria and Verity
582
00:30:23,520 --> 00:30:26,400
worked for was did tell the
maker of honey hugs referenced
583
00:30:26,400 --> 00:30:30,360
in common people.
Now Bandersnatch mentioned
584
00:30:30,360 --> 00:30:32,120
there.
I sent you something the other
585
00:30:32,120 --> 00:30:36,760
day and again talk not quite on
the Mandela Effect thing, but
586
00:30:36,760 --> 00:30:39,720
did you see that Netflix of now?
I think they've removed that
587
00:30:39,720 --> 00:30:42,480
episode from Netflix.
No, I, I, I saw your news
588
00:30:42,480 --> 00:30:43,600
article.
It said they weren't going to
589
00:30:43,600 --> 00:30:44,760
remove it.
I didn't never done it yet.
590
00:30:45,200 --> 00:30:48,000
Well, and the reason being is
because that and another show
591
00:30:48,480 --> 00:30:51,400
that one, that one was
interactive so you could make
592
00:30:51,400 --> 00:30:54,400
choices and apparently Netflix
are updating their software,
593
00:30:54,400 --> 00:30:56,280
which means that wouldn't work
anymore.
594
00:30:56,280 --> 00:30:59,480
So again, imagine you sit down
and you say I want to watch
595
00:30:59,480 --> 00:31:00,560
Banda Snatch.
It's not there.
596
00:31:00,560 --> 00:31:02,600
You're going to start.
Did it even exist?
597
00:31:04,880 --> 00:31:07,600
I was thinking why couldn't they
release it as just a stand alone
598
00:31:07,600 --> 00:31:09,680
film?
But yeah, if you if if those of
599
00:31:09,680 --> 00:31:11,280
you listening have done it,
you'll know why.
600
00:31:11,280 --> 00:31:15,000
But yeah, I just think it's
funny with this technology now
601
00:31:15,000 --> 00:31:18,720
that we are having to remove
episodes because the updates to
602
00:31:18,720 --> 00:31:22,120
the technology can't run it.
Yeah, I mean, this was a fairly
603
00:31:22,120 --> 00:31:26,760
quick episode, but like I said,
it's I think the subject was not
604
00:31:26,760 --> 00:31:29,920
as in depth as as some of the
others, but I guess it was a fun
605
00:31:29,920 --> 00:31:32,720
episode on a fun subject.
What would you rate it?
606
00:31:33,200 --> 00:31:35,400
Just before you rate it, one
thing I was going to say is I
607
00:31:35,520 --> 00:31:37,640
thought the actresses, both the
actresses are really, really
608
00:31:37,640 --> 00:31:39,720
good.
I thought they they played those
609
00:31:39,720 --> 00:31:43,080
parts well.
She got more and more frantic
610
00:31:43,080 --> 00:31:46,640
and paranoid, and the other one
got a little bit more psychotic
611
00:31:46,640 --> 00:31:48,800
as the story went on.
Quite good.
612
00:31:49,680 --> 00:31:52,880
Yeah, really good point that
Verity starts off as quite as
613
00:31:52,880 --> 00:31:56,960
shy, like she's a new person in
the company's shy, like the harm
614
00:31:56,960 --> 00:31:58,720
innocent.
You know, I'm just trying to get
615
00:31:58,720 --> 00:32:01,000
a job.
And then like he said, when she
616
00:32:01,000 --> 00:32:03,880
reveals herself with the milk
bit at the end, she she just
617
00:32:04,000 --> 00:32:05,720
totally changes.
Doesn't she just switched?
618
00:32:05,720 --> 00:32:13,680
Yeah, I'm going to give this one
a six because I just can't hide
619
00:32:13,680 --> 00:32:15,240
from how disappointed I was at
the end.
620
00:32:15,680 --> 00:32:19,360
I'm annoyed because I'm going to
give it 6 as well.
621
00:32:20,520 --> 00:32:22,400
Really.
Yeah, Yeah.
622
00:32:22,600 --> 00:32:24,440
Well, I'm annoyed because you've
got the same score as me.
623
00:32:24,440 --> 00:32:27,200
Usually you score a little bit
higher than me, so I was open to
624
00:32:27,200 --> 00:32:28,760
go.
Oh, no, I'm going to be tougher
625
00:32:28,760 --> 00:32:32,360
than you.
Yeah, again, I like the.
626
00:32:32,400 --> 00:32:37,280
I like the subject.
I thought it was good the ending
627
00:32:37,680 --> 00:32:40,640
yeah just just let it down.
It it, it ruined what?
628
00:32:40,640 --> 00:32:43,600
Well, not ruined, but it it let
down what was a really big build
629
00:32:43,600 --> 00:32:45,200
up.
And yeah, like I said, just
630
00:32:45,200 --> 00:32:47,800
about that she you go into a
house which had these massive
631
00:32:47,800 --> 00:32:52,840
quantum computers, this pendant.
Thing is, it was, what was it, a
632
00:32:52,840 --> 00:32:56,400
47 minute episode?
47 minutes or something like
633
00:32:56,400 --> 00:33:01,320
that. 51. 51 so some Black
Mirror episodes go on for like
634
00:33:01,320 --> 00:33:03,600
an hour and a half, so it felt
like they had a bit more time to
635
00:33:03,600 --> 00:33:05,840
play with.
So I think they didn't have to
636
00:33:05,840 --> 00:33:07,880
rush it.
Obviously, obviously people can
637
00:33:07,880 --> 00:33:09,160
tell.
I'm really frustrated with the
638
00:33:09,160 --> 00:33:12,920
way it ended, but just just felt
like there's opportunity and
639
00:33:13,000 --> 00:33:16,600
they've swandered it.
Yeah, like you said, you know
640
00:33:16,600 --> 00:33:18,400
where because I just had a look
ahead.
641
00:33:18,400 --> 00:33:20,840
So the next episode is 78
minutes.
642
00:33:20,840 --> 00:33:24,080
So they they've got the ability
to, as you say, have a bit of
643
00:33:24,080 --> 00:33:28,120
time.
But, you know, it's there are
644
00:33:28,120 --> 00:33:32,000
probably some people out there
who, who, who think where were
645
00:33:32,000 --> 00:33:33,680
miserable and they loved the
endings.
646
00:33:33,680 --> 00:33:38,240
Yeah, maybe, probably right.
Maybe they maybe they saw a
647
00:33:38,240 --> 00:33:41,760
completely different ending.
Maybe if you did, let us know
648
00:33:41,880 --> 00:33:44,840
and I might put out a second,
second episode of this.
649
00:33:44,840 --> 00:33:48,160
I might update this a week after
I put this out just to correct
650
00:33:48,160 --> 00:33:52,360
some things, but anything else
about this one you wanted to
651
00:33:52,360 --> 00:33:54,480
talk about?
No, I think, I think we've
652
00:33:54,480 --> 00:33:56,720
covered it all.
I guess the one thing I probably
653
00:33:56,720 --> 00:33:59,680
should ask, did this feel like a
Black Mirror episode to you?
654
00:34:00,400 --> 00:34:02,040
Did it feel like a Black
episode?
655
00:34:02,640 --> 00:34:06,320
It's funny you say that because
at some points while watching
656
00:34:06,320 --> 00:34:09,600
it, I did feel like this was
more stand alone and siloed from
657
00:34:09,600 --> 00:34:11,679
the rest of them.
And I can't tell you why I felt
658
00:34:11,679 --> 00:34:13,639
that.
So it's funny that you've asked
659
00:34:13,639 --> 00:34:14,880
me that, because I did feel
that.
660
00:34:15,520 --> 00:34:18,679
I'm the same it it.
It could almost be up until the
661
00:34:18,679 --> 00:34:21,560
last five minutes, but it feels
like it could almost be just
662
00:34:21,560 --> 00:34:24,280
some sort of psychological
drama.
663
00:34:25,080 --> 00:34:28,440
It's I, I think the reason why I
ask that is because a lot of the
664
00:34:28,440 --> 00:34:31,679
Black Mirror episodes tend to
have either that massive impact
665
00:34:31,679 --> 00:34:35,840
of technology right throughout
it, or it's quite sinister at
666
00:34:35,840 --> 00:34:38,920
the start, isn't it?
There's that, that overtone.
667
00:34:39,840 --> 00:34:42,800
I do wonder, and maybe it's not
linked to that at all, but that
668
00:34:43,040 --> 00:34:45,400
you mentioned it about the
dramatic announcement of what
669
00:34:45,400 --> 00:34:48,239
day it was.
I don't know if that had like
670
00:34:48,239 --> 00:34:52,639
some sort of impact on my
viewing of it in in some sort of
671
00:34:52,639 --> 00:34:55,199
weird way that made it seemed
different to Black Mirror.
672
00:34:55,199 --> 00:34:57,760
I don't know.
Maybe, and the only reason I say
673
00:34:57,760 --> 00:34:59,960
that is because it's very
unusual, because you didn't
674
00:34:59,960 --> 00:35:03,040
really need to know that it was
Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
675
00:35:03,040 --> 00:35:04,800
Completely unimportant, wasn't
it?
676
00:35:04,880 --> 00:35:07,560
Apart from the fact that
everything unravelled within a
677
00:35:07,560 --> 00:35:09,920
few days.
Yeah, like Russ, literally what
678
00:35:09,920 --> 00:35:13,080
they were trying to establish.
Yeah, but it comes up full
679
00:35:13,080 --> 00:35:15,000
screen, doesn't it?
It's almost like a jump scare,
680
00:35:15,000 --> 00:35:17,280
you know, It's it's.
Jarring, isn't it?
681
00:35:17,280 --> 00:35:20,240
It's not like it's gentle.
It was quite jarring when they
682
00:35:20,240 --> 00:35:22,840
announced what day it was.
Maybe that's what work feels
683
00:35:22,840 --> 00:35:24,400
like.
Maybe that's the impact they
684
00:35:24,400 --> 00:35:26,680
were trying to introduce it.
This is what a day at work feels
685
00:35:26,680 --> 00:35:28,160
like.
We're going to jar you into
686
00:35:28,840 --> 00:35:32,560
business.
OK, well, you had a you had a
687
00:35:32,560 --> 00:35:34,800
high scoring one last week.
We've gone to six, six.
688
00:35:34,800 --> 00:35:37,280
I think it just means it's a
solid episode, right?
689
00:35:37,560 --> 00:35:39,240
It's not.
It's not terrible, but.
690
00:35:39,320 --> 00:35:41,240
Yeah, solid could be better.
Yeah.
691
00:35:41,480 --> 00:35:43,720
And just actually one more thing
for me, what you said about the
692
00:35:43,720 --> 00:35:46,000
two leads.
Yeah, because when I was looking
693
00:35:46,000 --> 00:35:47,920
them up, they haven't actually
done that much.
694
00:35:47,920 --> 00:35:50,520
So it's like they're fairly.
It's not like they've got a
695
00:35:50,520 --> 00:35:52,880
massive catalog.
I think I said this at the
696
00:35:52,880 --> 00:35:54,760
start.
So you know, for how well they
697
00:35:54,760 --> 00:35:58,880
portrayed those two roles and
being ultimately the two main
698
00:35:58,880 --> 00:36:01,800
roles, right, it was only the
the boss and the boyfriend, I
699
00:36:01,800 --> 00:36:03,880
think that had the next biggest
roles, right?
700
00:36:03,880 --> 00:36:05,360
So.
Yeah, I don't think you did
701
00:36:05,360 --> 00:36:07,040
mention it at the start.
OK.
702
00:36:07,040 --> 00:36:10,320
No, I'm, I'm joking.
I was going there.
703
00:36:11,440 --> 00:36:13,880
You go well, so I I, I couldn't
let my mum.
704
00:36:14,400 --> 00:36:18,920
You got it in, you got me.
You got anything else should be
705
00:36:18,920 --> 00:36:22,360
done before we go other than
having having fun at my expense
706
00:36:22,360 --> 00:36:24,120
again?
No, I think I'm done now.
707
00:36:24,960 --> 00:36:27,360
I could do it offline as well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
708
00:36:28,120 --> 00:36:30,920
We will see you next time for
another episode of Casting
709
00:36:30,920 --> 00:36:34,720
Reflections on Black Mirror,
where it will be Season 7,
710
00:36:34,720 --> 00:36:46,200
Episode 3, Hotel Reverie 2334.
If I want your opinion, I will
711
00:36:46,200 --> 00:36:49,360
give it to you.
