00:00:35.359 -->
00:00:41.920This is Brainstorm, where understanding your brain is the first step toward lasting change.
00:00:42.960 -->
00:00:43.840Welcome everyone.
00:00:44.000 -->
00:00:53.119I'm Chelsea Earlywine, co-host and producer here in the studio with Sandra Hooper Mercott, founder of BrainTopia Neurofeedback Center.
00:00:53.280 -->
00:00:54.560Sandra, how are you today?
00:00:54.880 -->
00:00:55.200Great.
00:00:55.280 -->
00:00:56.240Good morning, Chelsea.
00:00:56.560 -->
00:00:57.039Good morning.
00:00:57.200 -->
00:00:58.240It's great to see you.
00:00:58.479 -->
00:01:06.000So over the years, you've grown a remarkable following, but some of our listeners might not be familiar with the full journey.
00:01:06.159 -->
00:01:07.920So let's take it from the top.
00:01:08.159 -->
00:01:12.000Could you share a little background about your company and what you do?
00:01:12.400 -->
00:01:12.799Sure.
00:01:13.040 -->
00:01:14.799So I'm an educator by nature.
00:01:14.959 -->
00:01:19.200A lot of people will ask if uh I'm if I'm a doctor, if I'm in the medical field.
00:01:19.280 -->
00:01:27.439We like to say we're medically adjacent because I come from a medical family, started off my education pre-med, but went the education route.
00:01:27.599 -->
00:01:35.760And so my master's degree, all of my work was in brain-based education under the um teachings of a psychologist named Howard Gardner.
00:01:35.920 -->
00:01:40.959And his idea was that there were nine different areas of the brain that controlled nine different learning functions.
00:01:41.040 -->
00:01:47.760And then when I found neurofeedback, it was very similar to that, just in the emotional realm instead of educational realm.
00:01:47.840 -->
00:01:52.560So it really fit, it was a hand-in-glove fit for my education and for what I was doing.
00:01:52.719 -->
00:01:56.400I've spent 25 years as an educator, just left that field.
00:01:56.640 -->
00:02:04.959Um, and so we really wanted to be able to offer parents and families and people in general a look into their brain to understand why they were feeling what they were feeling.
00:02:05.040 -->
00:02:08.719And that's what neurofeedback and the QEG brain mapping process gives us.
00:02:09.039 -->
00:02:10.080That's amazing.
00:02:10.319 -->
00:02:15.759Well, I'm excited to dive in further about Brain Topia in our coming episodes.
00:02:15.919 -->
00:02:19.919So I know that marketing is key to any business's success.
00:02:20.080 -->
00:02:22.400So how do you market Brain Topia?
00:02:22.800 -->
00:02:23.039Right.
00:02:23.199 -->
00:02:28.879So the most the the way that we started was going to the people that I was already working with.
00:02:29.039 -->
00:02:35.840So parents in my class or um friends of my son, and just going to the people in our warm market.
00:02:35.919 -->
00:02:46.960And what we found is something that we have now coined mom-to-mom marketing because we found that when one family experienced success, they're going to tell other members of their family, they're going to tell their friends.
00:02:47.120 -->
00:02:53.360And so that's the best referral source that we can have is one person who has had success and felt better telling another person.
00:02:53.439 -->
00:02:55.439And so that's really how we've grown this.
00:02:55.759 -->
00:02:59.360Um, we also, you know, wanted to, again, education is my background.
00:02:59.520 -->
00:03:03.919So I wanted to be able to be education forward of letting people know that this is a solution.
00:03:04.240 -->
00:03:10.080Um, we're not anti-meds in our center, but we want to give people a solution that is not necessarily medicine-based.
00:03:10.159 -->
00:03:15.840And so uh we we just want to educate people little by little in any way that we can that this is an option for them.
00:03:16.000 -->
00:03:20.240So mostly that mom-to-mom or person-to-person marketing is how we want to grow.
00:03:20.400 -->
00:03:26.319But um, we're we're working with doctors now and going out with uh different practitioners to to spread the word.
00:03:26.639 -->
00:03:27.199I love that.
00:03:27.360 -->
00:03:28.639Mom-to-mom marketing.
00:03:28.719 -->
00:03:30.400That's a fantastic term.
00:03:30.639 -->
00:03:36.319So, Sandra, when you are not busy running your business, what do you do for fun in your free time?
00:03:36.879 -->
00:03:38.479Uh our family loves to travel.
00:03:38.639 -->
00:03:45.280So that has been a big thing for us is being able to look at the world um and and really make the world.
00:03:45.360 -->
00:03:50.000We have a 13-year-old son, and so make the world his classroom and make the world our classroom.
00:03:50.159 -->
00:03:56.400So we know that the more that we can understand uh everyone in different cultures and different countries, uh, the better we can be here.
00:03:56.479 -->
00:04:01.599So really travel is is what we would, you know, next to Braintopia, that's how we spend most of our time.
00:04:01.840 -->
00:04:02.479Oh, I love that.
00:04:02.639 -->
00:04:04.960Do you have a top destination that you've been to?
00:04:05.599 -->
00:04:11.919Oh gosh, our goal uh for our family is to get my son to ever all seven continents uh before he graduates high school.
00:04:12.000 -->
00:04:13.520So we have two more to go.
00:04:13.599 -->
00:04:15.919So we we've we've done a great uh job with that.
00:04:16.079 -->
00:04:18.480So Europe is probably the place we go most.
00:04:18.639 -->
00:04:20.560Um, but but we love it all.
00:04:20.720 -->
00:04:25.279I mean, we we love we we uh have been to Africa, we have been to Australia.
00:04:25.439 -->
00:04:27.199So that really, I mean, you can't go wrong.
00:04:27.279 -->
00:04:28.160They're all wonderful.
00:04:28.480 -->
00:04:29.680Oh, that's so much fun.
00:04:29.839 -->
00:04:30.319I love that.
00:04:30.480 -->
00:04:34.079Well, you are a very busy person, in your own words.
00:04:34.319 -->
00:04:35.680Why are you doing this?
00:04:36.639 -->
00:04:43.120I am doing this because my family has been directly affected by brain health in a couple different ways.
00:04:43.360 -->
00:04:56.560So the first is um my son is adopted, and so we knew that we were potentially going to run into some um, you know, ADHD potentially different different things, and we just didn't want to add meds into the mix because we didn't know how that might affect him.
00:04:56.800 -->
00:04:58.000So that was number one.
00:04:58.160 -->
00:05:04.639Um, number two is my dad, who's an MD, he went through a liver transplant um uh uh that whole process.
00:05:04.800 -->
00:05:12.480And so what we saw is something called encephalopathy happen, which is the brain just losing, you know, function because of toxicity.
00:05:12.639 -->
00:05:15.759And then we saw that come back after his transplant.
00:05:15.839 -->
00:05:24.240And so we re we really started to see the the transformative and the healing power of the brain that this is not when we're in a certain state, it's not forever.
00:05:24.560 -->
00:05:26.160And there is a way that we can help.
00:05:26.319 -->
00:05:44.079And so, and then the third was um my little niece who had started with us before she was even two years old with some delayed language development, and not that anything was wrong, she just needed to open up those pathways a bit and was looking at potential diagnoses that we did not agree with and did not want to put on her.
00:05:44.160 -->
00:05:51.439And so she's she started this, and now she is a vibrant, four and a half, like brilliant, talkative, amazing little girl.
00:05:51.600 -->
00:05:54.720And so she always was that, but now she just is able to express it.
00:05:54.800 -->
00:06:02.639So those are three specific reasons why in our own family we saw that brain health and needing to address this and wanting to address this was so important.
00:06:02.879 -->
00:06:09.759And that's why we are so passionate in our family about bringing this story forward, is that we've seen it ourselves and we were our first clients.
00:06:09.920 -->
00:06:14.800And if I'm gonna do this with my own family, I'm going to feel very confident recommending it for yours.
00:06:15.040 -->
00:06:15.680Oh, wow.
00:06:15.759 -->
00:06:16.240I love that.
00:06:16.399 -->
00:06:19.759That's very deep and personal to have that connection.
00:06:19.920 -->
00:06:20.560So wow.
00:06:20.639 -->
00:06:23.600Well, thank you so much, Sandra, for sharing all of that.
00:06:23.839 -->
00:06:32.240We will catch you in the next episode where we will dive into some frequently asked questions and get deeper into all things braintopia.
00:06:32.560 -->
00:06:32.879All right.
00:06:32.959 -->
