Stop Selling Features: The 10-Minute “So What?” Test for Small BusinessesIf you read one more business website bragging about its “synergistic paradigms” or “cutting-edge solutions,” you might actually scream. We completely get it. As business owners, it is incredibly easy to accidentally become the hero of our own marketing, listing the boring mechanics of what we do rather than how we actually make our customers’ lives better. Here is the cheeky truth: your customers do not care about your features. They care about themselves. Here is a dead-simple, 10-minute workshop to fix your marketing blind spot and start writing copy that actually connects.
The short of it…
Customers do not buy what you do; they buy how your product or service improves their lives.
Most business marketing is full of “features” (factual mechanics) when it should be leading with “benefits” (emotional or practical payoffs).
You can transform your entire marketing message in 10 minutes just by asking two little words: “So what?”
What we’ll peel back:- The Feature Trap (Why we all do it)
- The Core Concept: 1,000 songs in your pocket
- The “So What?” exercise in action
- Your 10-minute messaging action plan
- Frequently asked questions
You are too close to your own business. When you pour your blood, sweat, and tears into building something, you naturally want to talk about the mechanics of it.
- We state facts: “We offer 24/7 customer service.”
- We highlight qualifications: “I am a certified master plumber with 15 years of experience.”
- We talk ingredients: “Our skincare uses 100% organic, cold-pressed oils.”
These are features. And while they are lovely, your potential customer is reading them and subconsciously thinking, “Nice, but what’s in it for me?” When you leave them to connect the dots themselves, you lose them.
The Core Concept: 1,000 Songs in Your PocketLet’s look at one of the most famous marketing pivots in history: Apple’s original iPod.
If Apple had fallen into the Feature Trap, their billboard would have proudly proclaimed: “A brand new 1GB MP3 player!” That is a feature. It is a fact about the device.
Instead, Steve Jobs translated that feature into a benefit: “1,000 songs in your pocket.”
He didn’t make the customer do the math. He painted a picture of the exact payoff they would get. Features tell, but benefits sell.
The “So What?” Exercise in ActionTop Banana Tip: Never assume your customer knows why a feature matters. Spell it out for them. The lazier you let their brain be, the more likely they are to buy.
To find the true benefit of any product or service you offer, state a standard feature and aggressively ask yourself “So what?” until you hit a real emotional or practical payoff.
Let’s look at a local landscaping company:
- Feature: “We use battery-powered lawnmowers.”
- So what?
- Answer: “They are much quieter than gas mowers.”
- So what?
- True Benefit: “You get to sleep in on Saturday mornings while we make your yard look perfect.”
Suddenly, you aren’t selling landscaping equipment. You are selling a peaceful Saturday morning. That is how you win lifelong clients.
Your 10-Minute Messaging Action PlanQuick Win: Look at the main headline on your website right now. If it just says what you do (e.g., “Sydney’s Premier Accountants”), it’s a feature. Change it to what your customer gets out of it (e.g., “Keep More of Your Money This Tax Season”).
Want to stop sounding like a corporate brochure and start connecting with humans today? Check these off your list:
- ✓ List the Facts: Write down three standard features or “facts” about your business on a sticky note.
- ✓ Interrogate Yourself: Play the annoying toddler. Ask “So what?” two or three times for each fact until you hit the emotional or practical payoff.
- ✓ Update Your Bio: Take your favorite new Benefit and use it to replace your current Instagram or Facebook bio.
- ✓ Nail Your Pitch: Use this new Benefit as your 10-second introduction the next time someone asks, “So, what do you do?”
By translating your features into benefits, you show your customers that you actually understand them. And in business, empathy always wins.
The Bigger PictureEmbracing the “So What?” test is incredibly liberating. It reminds you that marketing isn’t about bragging about how great your company is; it is about shining the spotlight entirely on your customer.
When you strike this balance:
- Your website copy shifts from boring corporate jargon to engaging, conversational warmth.
- You attract clients who feel immediately understood, making them an absolute dream to work with.
- You stop competing on price, because people will gladly pay a premium for a clear, stress-free solution.
Remember, your business is brilliant, but your customers are busy. Do not make them work hard to figure out why they need you. Use the “So What?” test to cut the fluff, get straight to the value, and let your amazing service do the rest. You’ve got this.
Frequently Asked QuestionsAbsolutely! Remember, businesses don’t buy things; the humans running those businesses buy things. A CEO or a Procurement Manager still wants to save time, look good to their boss, or reduce their stress. The “So What?” test is just as critical in B2B as it is in B2C.
Not at all! Features are still important, but they belong in the supporting role. The Benefit is the hook that grabs their attention and makes them care. The Features go further down the page to logically justify the purchase they have already emotionally decided to make.
Even more reason to dig into the benefits! A plain white t-shirt is a feature. The benefit could be: “Get dressed in under a minute and still look effortlessly put-together,” or “The only shirt that actually survives a hot wash cycle.” Find the angle that makes their day better!
