00:00:00
Speaker 1: Hello everyone, former five double a announcer and that's right, superstar, amendably lovely to see, very well, it's always lovely to see. I said this earlier in the show. So Matthew pantell Us it takes.
00:00:11
Speaker 2: Holidays, yes, to do the ring, to do the ring.
00:00:14
Speaker 1: Yes, he loves the show so much. I said. The only person I know who loves the Royal Show more than Matthew is you. Yes, correct, And then you just showed me just off air. You're a lanyard.
00:00:25
Speaker 2: Yes, I'm a life member.
00:00:26
Speaker 1: You are a life Now.
00:00:27
Speaker 3: People think that that's something that's been gifted to me.
00:00:30
Speaker 2: This is not. This is something I purchased about twenty.
00:00:33
Speaker 3: Years ago because I thought, you know what, I bloody loved this show and I'm going to go every single day that it's on for the rest.
00:00:40
Speaker 2: Of my life.
00:00:41
Speaker 3: So I bought a life membership, which means I come in and out, in and out, in and out in and out as much as I can.
00:00:47
Speaker 1: You let's go back to your you're from Melbourne originally I.
00:00:50
Speaker 2: Am from Melbourne.
00:00:51
Speaker 1: Thank you for When did the love affair with the show star? Was it?
00:00:54
Speaker 3: I bought my first house in nineteen ninety nine here in Wayville, right, So I'm a Wayville resident and I didn't really know, Like bizarrely, I didn't actually know that there were the showgrounds when I bought the house, and then I'd only been a no, but I did, don't you know what I mean, Like I didn't even look.
00:01:14
Speaker 2: I was just like, Yeah, there's a house. I'll buy that house.
00:01:16
Speaker 3: And it was my first house and it was lovely and I loved Wayville.
00:01:19
Speaker 2: And then come September, I.
00:01:22
Speaker 3: Saw all of these people taking their tuppleware to the Adelaide show and I'm like.
00:01:27
Speaker 2: What's going on?
00:01:28
Speaker 3: And I followed them and it was the competitive cooking and it was the day before the show started, and I was kind of like, what's going what's going on here? And they said, oh, it's a show, and I went right, oh bang. Next day went in, loved it, love affair ever since. Because inside of me leaf Forest is a farmer wanting to come out.
00:01:47
Speaker 2: I am rural.
00:01:50
Speaker 3: In my heart, I am a person of the land. I'm not a person of the land. I have six hundred square meters in Wayville, but in my mind I think I'm a woman of the land. And you see, so I get my jeans on and my r M and I wander around, and I go and pat cows, and I look at sheep, and I pretend I understand what's happening with the fleece, and I look at the goats and the alpackers, and I spend an inordinate amount of time in the poultry pavilion.
00:02:19
Speaker 2: And I'm as happy as a clam at the Adelaide show.
00:02:23
Speaker 3: And I've written about it before. And it's not just the animals that I love. I think the thing I love most about the show is that for ten days, there's this little postage stamp of Wayville, right and the showgrounds, and every single type of person, every bit of humanity is thrown in together like a giant pot of spaghetti bolognaise. It's just everybody is here, and I'm amongst it, and I'm just quietly wandering along, doing a bit of licking and picking in the taste Essay pavilion, getting a few.
00:02:56
Speaker 1: You know, you're a great ambassador. We've been friends for a long time. I see you ride the police bike.
00:03:03
Speaker 2: Yes, I do, thank you.
00:03:04
Speaker 1: That's like a guaranteed photo. It's like you would take your kids to see Santa. It's Amanda on the bike. You want to get your photo there? You become a judge.
00:03:12
Speaker 2: Yes, no, I'm a stewart.
00:03:14
Speaker 1: I'm sorry to see so difference.
00:03:16
Speaker 3: Well, I've been made a stewart because I started competing in the cooking. Probably I reckon how Old said twenty one, probably about twenty years ago. Now, I actually started competing in the cooking following those ladies with the tappaware. I thought, well, if they can do it, I can do it too. So I started competing and I want a few blue ribbons. Don't want to make you feel, you know, insecure.
00:03:37
Speaker 1: This is what the show's all about. The humble brad.
00:03:39
Speaker 3: That's right, the humble brag. So I won a few blue ribbons. Happiest day of my life was the first blue ribbon. And then from there I kind of got to know all the judges and the conveners all thought.
00:03:48
Speaker 1: You're retired early and said, you know what, once I get the blue how much can I win? Well?
00:03:52
Speaker 2: This is it.
00:03:52
Speaker 1: Right.
00:03:53
Speaker 3: Once I got a blue ribbon in a category, I walked away, because you want to walk away on top. You know I'm working in radio. Hey, we know that you want to walk away when you're on top and.
00:04:02
Speaker 1: Boxes always hang around too long. You know, we get out.
00:04:05
Speaker 3: Don't hang around for the head injury. Just get the title.
00:04:08
Speaker 2: Get away.
00:04:09
Speaker 3: So for me, I was like right, you know, I got to know all the judges and everything. And then one day the letter arrived via the postal service saying, dear Amanda, would you consider being a.
00:04:20
Speaker 2: Steward at the Adelaide Show?
00:04:23
Speaker 3: And I was like, wow, that is an honor, and that means that I assist the judges in the cooking. So on the Friday before the show starts, when everyone hands over their competitive entries, I'm on the front counter welcoming them taking their cakes into my person, saying thank you very much, and then I lay it out on the table for the judges. And then the judges walk in and it's all very official, and I carry the knife bucket, which is where I walk around with it with the warm water so the judges can dip their knife in and it's fantastic and I hold you it's the best.
00:04:56
Speaker 1: Can I ask you a controversial question? So Die Hall was here before from Newman's Nursery. Die came second. She got a second prize in the marmalade.
00:05:05
Speaker 2: Oh that's a hard category. That's good to get.
00:05:09
Speaker 1: Wants to channel her in a Karen and speak to the manager. She wants to find out why, what does she need to do? Do you give feedback as actually.
00:05:16
Speaker 3: We do, but not so much around showtime. I mean, if you managed to see the judges are like Batman, they come in, don't no, they come in and then they disappear, you see, so you don't get to see the judges. But if you actually call up and register with the cooking conven like, you can get on the mailing list. We actually have I think two or three days leading up to the entries in the show where you can come to the Wayville showgrounds. We've also done it online and you can ask questions with the judges and they have to be honest with you, and so you have to find out what they're looking for in us loss.
00:05:52
Speaker 2: They have to say, right, this is.
00:05:54
Speaker 3: What we like, and you know, this is what we want in an anzac biscuit, this is what we look for in a ginger fluff sponge.
00:06:00
Speaker 1: And then it becomes super competitive. I watched you yesterday with the cake decorating. Oh my god, over in the corner and I got to see John Paul Drake who was wearing his blue ribbon from his hobby horse.
00:06:09
Speaker 2: That's experiment and I loved though.
00:06:14
Speaker 1: It was hilarious, so funny.
00:06:16
Speaker 2: There's always so much to do, you know.
00:06:18
Speaker 3: Like as you said, I am a bit of a fan of the show, and I love every single part of it.
00:06:24
Speaker 2: And I think to.
00:06:25
Speaker 3: What I love is that their Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society are always looking for ways to put on new things and free things, you know, And I really get quite peeved when I hear people going out it's really expensive, because it's like it's actually not that expensive, like twenty eight bucks to get in for an adult, which is pretty good, twenty dollars for concession to get in, which is nothing.
00:06:48
Speaker 2: Really.
00:06:49
Speaker 1: They have a music concert ticket for anything under the.
00:06:52
Speaker 3: Quid, you know, and that's like two lattes and a biscuit.
00:06:56
Speaker 2: Really at a cafe.
00:06:58
Speaker 3: And you can come in and I don't spend any money when I'm here. You know, you can bring your own food in, you can bring your own drinks in. It's not like other venues where they.
00:07:06
Speaker 2: Stop you doing that.
00:07:07
Speaker 3: You can come in and I've spent whole days here where I've spent no money.
00:07:12
Speaker 1: You're a great ambassador for the c w A. Yes, sac w A and you love and again. I saw a post of yours on socials where you were you showcase one of the ladies, Evelyn, and I thought to myself, it's a bit like the remember there was that online people of New York. It's like, let's meet the characters. You could almost do a book of it of the people like yourself. And I got up with Phil from Golden North who's been doing the show. I love Phil one hundred years.
00:07:40
Speaker 2: I've got a couple of my kids down there scooping for Phil.
00:07:43
Speaker 1: There would be a million stories there is show that there is may or may not know.
00:07:47
Speaker 3: And you know what, most of the people are really happy to talk about their you know, prize cat, or their prize.
00:07:53
Speaker 2: Guinea pig, or the you know, any of the exhibits.
00:07:57
Speaker 3: You can go down into poultry and there's always the owners down there, and you can say what makes a good pigeon, what makes a good cock, because that's what a male pigeon is called. And I learned that from hanging around, Yes, the Royal Adelaide.
00:08:10
Speaker 1: Show look, how nervous you just made Blake and producer to do a dumb that's.
00:08:18
Speaker 2: Like to be a bit provocating. You get with a serious.
00:08:24
Speaker 3: Skate as fast as I can towards the line, and then I pull back.
00:08:28
Speaker 1: Channing her in how It's stir, which is excellent. It's great people watching and you're right. It is everyone from every different walk of life in the same venue at the same time. That's the thing I love about it. But as I'm getting older and getting more sentimental, it's the joy, and it's the joy that the show brings for different reasons, like the kids in They're Bluey, you know, the joy, the joy of people when they find on the yellow brick road stop number three. Because I love thee I.
00:09:00
Speaker 3: Haven't done it this year yet. I'm saving myself up. I'm going to do it on Saturday because I'm coming in for the dogs, because the Bassett Hounds are in the ring on Saturday, my favorite breed.
00:09:09
Speaker 1: Do you work every day the show?
00:09:11
Speaker 2: I'm here every day every day.
00:09:14
Speaker 1: Do you have an official role or you just like.
00:09:17
Speaker 3: No Stewart So I've had to Steward a couple of times over the show. But yeah, I think just sort of all round dog's body. If they need someone to do something, I'll do it. Do you know what was amazing the other day I'm going to name and chain, but there was one of the old show, the old former board members. This is also what I love about the Adelaide Show is that there's no hierarchy, right, everyone pictures in and everyone has a great time.
00:09:40
Speaker 2: And there was a man the other day.
00:09:43
Speaker 3: Called Jock Duncan who's a former board member, like the Duncan Pavilion, big show name. The Duncan's a really big old Adelaide rural family. And I saw him picking up rubbish and putting it in the rubbish bins and straightening up the bins, and.
00:09:57
Speaker 2: I thought to myself, God, I love that. I love that.
00:10:01
Speaker 3: I love that that everyone's here, all the volunteers. Like this event could not operate without the volunteers. There's over five thousand volunteers here every single day, which is amazing. Yeah, there's over five thousand volunteers.
00:10:13
Speaker 2: Wow here on every single day. Wow, which is amazing.
00:10:17
Speaker 3: And that's one of the reasons why in the COVID year, you know, when there was COVID and that there was no show. Part of the reason for that is that the limit that was imposed by s A Health or whoever it was, was that you could only have five thousand people alongside at any one time, and the board and everyone were going, well, hang on a second, because that's only the volunteers.
00:10:37
Speaker 2: So it's not going to be it's not going to be much.
00:10:40
Speaker 1: It's huge.
00:10:41
Speaker 2: It is huge.
00:10:42
Speaker 1: I would not have put it.
00:10:44
Speaker 2: You wouldn't have known it. And you know that's incredible.
00:10:46
Speaker 3: And because every single pavilion is staffed by volunteers, all the people that do the Yellow Brick Road volunteers, you know, it's an extraordinary event.
00:10:56
Speaker 1: It is an extraordinary event. I wonder.
00:10:59
Speaker 2: I can't down if you haven't been there seriously.
00:11:01
Speaker 1: Tomorrow and across the weekend too.
00:11:04
Speaker 3: But the numbers good. I've heard a rumor the numbers are very good this year. There's lots of people coming down. And it's funny because a few people have said to me, oh, I think it's a bit quiet as and it has been in the past, and so I asked the question of the officials and they said, no, it's not. And my ration, they said, the numbers are actually up. And my rationale is that they've spread it out like the site is very well spread out.
00:11:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's I must admit it does feel. We were here last year, the year before and it felt busier, like it's almost like they've taken one row of this particular pavilion and put it somewhere else so it's not as cramped. But I must say, we were here the first day on the Monday when it rained, and the pavilion was shock because everyone got out and as soon as the sun which always happens. It's a very lady you think to happen for one rain day during the show.
00:11:53
Speaker 3: It always ranged just before the show and the ring gets a bit soggy. And again, Blake, you don't want a soggy ring, No, just but that gets nice and soggy, and we all worry about that because we're like, what's happening to the ring?
00:12:06
Speaker 2: Will the horses be all right out there? And you know, it's amazing because I.
00:12:11
Speaker 1: Know you don't have any involvement in this, but you're one of the great chef slash bakers, slash cooks all of that. I have my first toffee apple here since primary school. I had to try it so my mother in law is she got a sweet tooth like me, so I tried it. I've never been more frightful to eat anything. I'll be honest to.
00:12:29
Speaker 2: Get over your face, I know.
00:12:31
Speaker 1: But it's just like I'm just the whole time, you think, and this is a dentist appointment waiting to But I do love the history, and then there are some people that don't like that side of it. I get it. But the dag with dogs and the like every bit of tradition you want. If you want the horticulture, it's here. If you want the agriculture, it's here.
00:12:47
Speaker 3: I don't know whether i'd put dagwood dogs, but you you're.
00:12:54
Speaker 2: I've never gone leaf.
00:12:55
Speaker 1: Forest if you're a low brow. If you're low browshend love my good self. It is. It's nostalgic to walk in and see the rides and the kids, and that's well, it's all about joy a.
00:13:06
Speaker 2: Lot of people.
00:13:07
Speaker 3: And again here's another hot tip everyone. A lot of membership is a really good thing to think about if you want to come to the show more than once.
00:13:14
Speaker 2: Right, because it looks like.
00:13:15
Speaker 3: The zoo, it's you know, multiple entries. I think it's ninety nine dollars for an adult membership. It's pretty good and you get in and out as many times as you like, or might it might be one hundred and twenty.
00:13:26
Speaker 2: I don't want to.
00:13:27
Speaker 3: I don't want to quite a man on the radio. Amanda's not very good at doing attacks. Amanda doesn't understand figures very well. But it's very reasonably priced and you can come in and out as many times as you like. And the Wavell residents tend to have memberships because we live so close, because we come in just for the Rotary Club of Mount Barker. Cinnamon donuts. If you want to talk about show food, that is the business.
00:13:56
Speaker 1: But it's always a third degree burn on the way out because you're always boy and there's always like a little hole somewhere where just a little bit of jam squoiretsu. There's no gams cinnamon, these other ones hot jam.
00:14:07
Speaker 3: Don't know talking about the secretary caravan.
00:14:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, no jam, just cinnamon. Thank you.
00:14:14
Speaker 1: Try that.
00:14:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, you do have to add to it.
00:14:18
Speaker 3: I chip on a stick once because I wanted to know what it was all about. You know, I could I could insertain filthy line. They're like not going to because I'm a mother of five but I gave it to crack and I haven't been back.
00:14:32
Speaker 1: You're not going to look No, that's fine. Hey, this is the this is the beauty about the show. You pick and trees once. I need to thank you for another one. I said this. I had Fiona from Dubai Chocolate.
00:14:45
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm not happy with that.
00:14:48
Speaker 1: Facebook, I'm getting out. No, No, Meghan Megan interest. She was literally here half an hour ago and I've already forgotten. I'm just hopeless with names. You know how that works. That's why now I write listeners names down on my computers.
00:15:00
Speaker 2: Have you started writing lisps at home yet?
00:15:01
Speaker 3: Because I'm at that age where a I want to write complaint letters to people. I've been writing some to my council of recent time, like a complaint letter, just write little letters to them.
00:15:13
Speaker 1: Michael Hewitson, I don't.
00:15:15
Speaker 2: Write to him, but I've written to other people.
00:15:17
Speaker 3: And I've also thought about writing to some of the new services, like I've become that person excellent, and I've also become the person that writes notes to remind me to do things like put bins out?
00:15:30
Speaker 2: Wow, can I go to the supermarket? Like what's happening?
00:15:33
Speaker 1: You have a great conversation with a talkback caller on five double A, and you're so involved in the conversation you forget their name. So now I just write it down.
00:15:40
Speaker 2: You're way lucky because it's on a screen.
00:15:42
Speaker 1: I know it is on a screen.
00:15:43
Speaker 3: See, I've got a theory that everyone in the world should wear a name tag. If we all wore name tags, that is great, don't you reckon? And we could also go to Valerie Travers and just have our name embroidered on our clothes.
00:15:53
Speaker 1: But I want to thank you because Meghan came across and she is the new thing of the show, because every year there's something of the show. We're When we were young kids, it was that the wig that you put on was sort of the silver hair that every kid. Oh then the pink cowboy hat had a but that's still here.
00:16:09
Speaker 2: I've seen a number of ladies with that on.
00:16:12
Speaker 1: Now it's to buy chocolate's courtesy of you. So she came past me. Yeah, because I saw it on your thing, and I said, we've got to find out what that is, because this is what the number one thing is at the show. The other shows going back in the day, that's a side.
00:16:26
Speaker 3: Hustle and she's making it is beautiful, though I have to save you. If you want to get your hands on some good chocolate, then you buy chocolate's quite good.
00:16:33
Speaker 2: You know.
00:16:33
Speaker 3: The other hit of the show which I've noticed, and just for the old gag factor, I was going to do it.
00:16:39
Speaker 2: It's where you go and you get your hair braided.
00:16:41
Speaker 1: Oh yes, just over your.
00:16:43
Speaker 3: Hair braided and they put like the fake colored hair on it. And I thought, you know what, a fifty seven year old woman with fake colored.
00:16:50
Speaker 1: Please braided hair, Please do that.
00:16:53
Speaker 3: That is guaranteed to light my husband's fires.
00:16:56
Speaker 1: Please, don't you're reck Absolutely if.
00:16:58
Speaker 3: I go home to hum and go what do you think I've been at the show? Maybe taking the toffee out, you.
00:17:02
Speaker 1: Put the burning flames on your car. I think you need to get your hair done as well. Lovely to see your first and foremost, there's allays of delight, congratulations on everything that you and the entire collective the whole time is done for the show.
00:17:13
Speaker 3: Well done to every single person, seriously, to every single volunteer, the people that come in in the morning and they water the plants, all the kids that are stick down there in the agricultural teams, the people and the poultry pavilion, everybody, all the CWA members. It's an extraordinary event and we should be very proud of it here in South Australia because it is undoubtedly, I think, the greatest show in the country and it's right here in Wayville.
00:17:39
Speaker 2: Five over three four.
00:17:40
Speaker 1: We are very blessed to have it, as we are blessed to have you. Amanda Blair, Life member.
00:17:45
Speaker 2: That's right, Life member.
00:17:46
Speaker 1: Kids look for her, be jealous with the pink, glittery hair. Great stage. We're going to get to a break ten minutes before we're checking with the boys ahead of tonight's Crows. Who's going to win? I know you're a Richmond things.
00:18:00
Speaker 2: I hate Collingwood. I really I don't know why, but yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
00:18:05
Speaker 1: I'm very nervous why your team's not in it.
00:18:08
Speaker 2: Yeah I know that, but just for the State, go nervous.
00:18:11
Speaker 1: You're a good supporter of the State deal. My tea pack to give away first caller through eight, double two three, double o, double five, Royal Breakfast Tea, Green Tea, Mint Rose Tea Tea. It's the fortieth Birthday Deal Martin.
00:18:25
Speaker 2: I know they're lovely people.
00:18:26
Speaker 1: Billions of cups of Deal Marte over the years. Here first caller through eight, double two three, double oh, double five. Amanda Blair my guest, Leaf Forest
