אודות פרק זה
What if “too late” is the wrong question and the better one is “what do I actually want now?” We dig into the midlife pivot with humor and honesty, peeling back the fear of looking foolish, the pressure to be instantly good, and the myth that everyone else got the memo on timing. From career changes to first creative attempts, we explore how to begin again without blowing up your life or your budget.
I share why podcasting became my laboratory for starting messy and staying consistent, including the reality of working without sponsors and carving out time around a day job. We talk about the real costs—money, energy, visibility—and the underrated advantages of being 40-ish: clearer boundaries, sharper instincts, and the ability to spot red flags early. You’ll hear personal stories, from my dad launching his own architecture business in his 40s to a one-year job detour that wasn’t ideal but led to friendships that changed everything. These aren’t highlight reels; they’re proof that experience is the upgrade, not the obstacle.
If you’ve been sitting on a new path—writing a script, changing fields, starting a business—we walk through reversible steps that reduce risk and build momentum: small pilots, trusted feedback, simple outreach, and a plan that respects the bills while growing your craft. The most useful reframe might be the simplest: time will pass either way. Five years from now, do you want to be wondering or living differently? Try this prompt to unlock honest desire: If it wasn’t too late, what would I let myself want?
If this conversation resonates, tap follow, leave a quick review, and share it with a friend who needs the nudge. Your words help more 40-ish listeners find their next brave step.

00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:38.960
Hello and welcome back to 40 ish and figuring it out, the podcast where we asked the questions no one warned us would show up around 40 and try to answer them without pretending we have it all together.
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:40.960
I'm your host, Katie Collicker.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:45.439
Last week we kicked off this series with a big one, who am I now?
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:52.960
And judging by the messages and quiet, oh wow, same reactions, that question hit home for a lot of us.
00:00:53.200 --> 00:00:59.600
If you haven't listened yet, I'd start there because today's question tends to show up right after that one.
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:02.399
But before we jump in, quick housekeeping.
00:01:02.560 --> 00:01:12.640
If this podcast feels like something you wish you had a few years ago, or something you really need right now, I'd love it if you'd subscribe, leave a rating, or share it with a friend.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:17.519
It helps this little corner of honesty find more women who are also figuring it out.
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:20.319
Usually in yoga pants with a cold coffee.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:23.040
Alright, let's get into today's question.
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:24.719
Is it too late?
00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:30.239
Alright, so is it too late to change careers?
00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:40.879
To start over, to go back to school, to fall in love again, or finally do something you've been quietly googling at midnight.
00:01:41.519 --> 00:01:47.200
And my personal favorite is Is it too late to be the version of myself I actually like?
00:01:47.680 --> 00:01:57.840
Because nothing makes you feel more ancient quite like technology updates, a pop song you don't recognize, or realizing your five-year plan was fifteen years ago.
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:01.120
So here's what I've noticed.
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:07.120
The question isn't really about time, it's about fear.
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:16.479
Fear of looking foolish, fear of starting at the bottom, fear of being seen trying, and not being instantly good at it.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:22.800
In our 40s, we've collected experience and along it and along with it expectations.
00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:28.960
We're used to being competent, we know how to do things, we don't love being beginners anymore.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:34.960
And yet, almost everything meaningful, meaningful requires us to begin one again.
00:02:35.919 --> 00:02:49.759
I know when I was originally starting out in podcasting, it was something that I had been toying with for a few months, and I started my other soccer podcast first, and I got really into that.
00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:57.919
I I really like this platform, and I really think it's helpful for those people that choose to listen to it.
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:02.240
I know that there are some people who don't like to listen to podcasts.
00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:20.560
I'm I, with my job and driving in different things, it's a lot easier for me to take in information, doing audiobooks, um, listening to music, and then listening to podcasts because that's how I get a lot of my information or stories and things.
00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:26.319
I hear recommendations for shows that I eventually watch from podcasts and different things.
00:03:26.479 --> 00:03:31.840
I find other podcasts through podcasts, so I find it to be very helpful for me.
00:03:32.400 --> 00:04:06.719
Um if you're new to listening to podcasts, I never I I remember being young and getting in the car with my dad who would listen to talk radio all the time, and it was like boring, but I love that podcasting gives people more flexibility to be able to speak on specific topics, relevant topics to different niches, and so I've really I've really enjoyed that, and there were is a lot of fear with doing it because I'm not a professional in any way.
00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:13.280
I didn't go to school for podcasting, but I've always been I guess a performer.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:23.680
Um and so I feel like I I don't know, I I put myself out there when I would perform and and do those types of things.
00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:36.560
Um, so I feel like I was pretty comfortable with being able to do it, but there is also the fear of you know the haters, the trolls, and things like that, because there are people who are just awful out there.
00:04:37.040 --> 00:04:48.639
And um, so putting yourself out there in platforms like this, you know, radio show hosts, TV show hosts, different things, like it's it's very you're putting yourself out there.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:55.120
So anyway, that that's something that could definitely hold people back from trying something like that.
00:04:55.360 --> 00:05:05.680
And if you've ever thought about trying to have a podcast or get into podcasting or something, you know, reach out to me or a you know, a friend, maybe somebody else that you know that does it.
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:13.360
I have a friend who was recommended with her new business to start a podcast, and so I was like, hey, I would love to help you in any way.
00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:21.439
I um gave her information to somebody else that was looking to help um get people going on podcasts from the ground floor.
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:32.480
They didn't want to help me because I had already started publishing my podcast, um, even though I was only like one or two episodes in, but they were like, yeah, no, we want to um help people from the ground floor.
00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:34.879
So I don't know if she's being helped by them at all.
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:39.439
Um, but if you're listening, Brooke, I'm also here if you still need help.
00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:42.639
Um anyway, excuse me.
00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:45.360
So the fear of starting it.
00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:55.759
That is a lot of at least in this space, what I hear people talk about is the fear of putting their information out there and that they'll get rejected.
00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:59.839
And when I started podcasting, it wasn't very easy.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:03.279
I wasn't super, I don't know, talkative.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:09.839
I I'm not really sure, but it gets easier as you do it more, which that's how everything is.
00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:14.160
It comes easier after you've done it over and over.
00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:18.959
Alright, so moving on, I guess.
00:06:19.199 --> 00:06:21.120
Trying to get over that fear.
00:06:21.439 --> 00:06:22.879
Um, so let's be honest.
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:25.199
Starting over at 40 hits different.
00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:27.839
At 25, you're like, sure, I'll try that.
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:29.439
What's the worst that could happen?
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:40.639
And at 40, you're like, okay, but that's the wor what's the worst case scenario, the backup plan, the emotional fallout, and will this require a bra with extra support?
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:47.360
Because, like, for me, I would love to do podcasting full-time or something in that realm.
00:06:47.519 --> 00:07:02.000
I'm also I've got some other creative ideas that I would love to be able to do, but I also need to be making money, and as of right now, I have no podcast sponsors, so if you're interested in that or know anybody, send them my way.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:13.040
But a lot of podcasters, independent podcasters, they don't have any sponsorships or anything like that, they're just doing it to do it because they like it.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:24.639
Um, I'm not making any money from this, so maybe down the road I will, but I'm not a top 10% or 1% or anything in podcasting.
00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:40.079
So for me, if I decided to one day quit my day job and my night job and just do podcasting full time, I could do it more and I could reach out to people and things like that that I don't have time to do.
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:42.800
But it's definitely scary.
00:07:43.040 --> 00:07:51.920
Here's the lie that we've been sold: that there's a timeline, that we missed it, that everyone else got the memo except us.
00:07:52.240 --> 00:08:01.040
But most of that pressure, it's imaginary or outdated, could be borrowed from people who never lived your life.
00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:08.399
40 isn't the end of possibility, it's the point where you finally have enough information to choose differently.
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:17.199
And I really love that because there's a lot of people who would want to try something new, and people are like, No, what are you thinking?
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:22.639
My dad had a job, um, very secure job for a company for a long time.
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:31.759
He's a design build architect, and when I was, I don't remember how old, but he was in his 40s and he started his own business.
00:08:31.920 --> 00:08:38.240
Now it was in the same niche, same realm, but he broke off on his own and he started out on his own.
00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:49.840
Now he was able to have, I'm assuming, business loans and things like that, and he already had relationships with a lot of people in in his area and things like that.
00:08:50.080 --> 00:09:09.519
So it it wasn't hard for him to build a clientele, but again, leaving a steady paying job that has benefits and things like that is really difficult, and starting over and starting out on your own is really difficult, and you have to be ready for that.
00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:22.639
So, for a personal story for me, I took a job for a like a family friend, and the contract was basically for one year.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:26.000
I was kind of not really loving the job that I was at.
00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:39.919
It I I didn't really know where I was gonna be going with it, and so I decided to take this other job, and it was just for a year, and it was fine, like it was okay, it was different.
00:09:40.159 --> 00:10:01.840
Um it it yeah, I some of it wasn't really what I expected it, some of it was what it was, and anyway, now when I look back on it, would I have taken that job knowing what I know now?
00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:25.919
Probably not, but I do have some good friendships that came out of that, and I never would have met those people had it not been for that job, but yeah, when I think back on that, that was kind of a year that was a transition year for me, and it was I think it was when we were moving, and maybe it wasn't.
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:51.759
I I don't even I don't even remember so long ago, but um I was in my 20s, and it was gonna pay me a little bit better and the opportunity for possible bonuses and things like that, and some things that happened afterwards were kind of eh, I I didn't really love, but um, I did it, and then I was able to move on and get another job later.
00:10:52.080 --> 00:11:02.639
But yeah, it's one of those where if I had known the things I know now, I probably wouldn't have.
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:09.759
But again, I gained a really good friendship with one of the women that I worked with, and I don't know if I would trade that.
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:20.240
You know, I never would have met that person had I not taken that job, and um, I was able to be there for her when her brother passed away, and I've kept in touch with her.
00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:32.320
She was my hairstylist for several years, and you know, I've kept in touch with her all throughout these years, even though she's moved to another state, um, watching her little family grow and things like that.
00:11:32.480 --> 00:11:33.840
So I don't know.
00:11:34.080 --> 00:11:37.919
Like, I I feel like I was meant to be friends with her.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:40.480
So, Marcy, if you're listening, love you.
00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:44.720
But as far as that job job, probably wouldn't do it again.
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:46.639
All right.
00:11:47.039 --> 00:11:51.200
We treat age like a disadvantage, but what if it's actually the upgrade?
00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:59.039
You know what you don't want now, you know what drains you, you know that you'll never tolerate it again.
00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:02.639
That's not being late, that's being informed.
00:12:02.879 --> 00:12:09.440
You're not starting from scratch, you're starting from experience with fewer illusions and better boundaries.
00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:11.440
And I totally feel that.
00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:19.840
Like there's certain things that kind of leave a bad taste in your mouth, and you're like, I'll never do that again.
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:39.120
Like that, because you didn't know that whatever that experience was, you you didn't know about it till you experienced it, and then you're like, Yeah, I'm gonna take this information and duly note it for next time something like this comes up, and I'll make sure that whatever it is doesn't happen again.
00:12:39.279 --> 00:12:50.720
And that could be in any case, like it could be, you know, you had an interaction with a family member and you needed to set boundaries with them for the next holiday or something like that.
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:51.600
I don't know.
00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:54.879
Like it could really could be anything.
00:12:55.279 --> 00:13:03.039
Also, can we agree starting over with emotional intelligence and a decent credit score is wildly underrated?
00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:09.600
If we're honest, the question isn't usually, is it too late?
00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:11.759
It's usually what if I fail?
00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:13.440
What if people judge me?
00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:17.120
What if I change and my life has to change too?
00:13:17.440 --> 00:13:24.320
Because wanting something new often means admitting that what we have isn't fully enough anymore.
00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:30.559
And that can feel scary and lonely and very inconvenient.
00:13:31.120 --> 00:13:47.600
So, one of the things that I have talked about on this podcast recently was um maybe one of one of my goals for this year is to write a book, which I'm actually gonna maybe table that or push it back a little bit.
00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:56.080
I've come up with a wildly amazing idea for a script for either a movie or a limited series.
00:13:56.240 --> 00:14:19.200
So if you guys know anybody in the biz, I know I have some contacts and things, and I've been getting feedback about different angles that I could start with, but I'm gonna be writing this script for, like I said, um maybe a a movie or a limited series, and um I've never done it before, you know.
00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:33.120
I didn't want my my inexperience, like I I I feel like I have this huge creative bubble around me um that's trying to come out.
00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:38.240
I like I said, the podcasting thing has really helped me be a little bit creative.
00:14:38.639 --> 00:14:50.559
Um and I've I've been going I went to my first fly dance fitness class this week, and I'm gonna be going to a couple more this week and next week um to give that a try.
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:52.000
I've I've enjoyed it so far.
00:14:52.159 --> 00:14:55.120
The first class was fun, a lot harder than I thought.
00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:04.240
Just because it says 101 on the end of it does not mean that it is like a baby beginner thing, but it definitely was a great workout.
00:15:04.480 --> 00:15:06.159
So shout out to Nicole.
00:15:06.399 --> 00:15:16.960
Um, but I have fear of trying to pursue that for many reasons.
00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:22.559
I'm not in the business, I have been in the film industry world locally here.
00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:31.360
Um, so like I said, I know people and I have some contacts from some sets and things that I've been on, but not like huge.
00:15:31.759 --> 00:15:37.919
And anyway, I've never written a screenplay before, a script or anything like that.
00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:40.080
So I'm developing the story.
00:15:40.159 --> 00:15:48.320
I have visions of the story and scenes and things going through my head and and things that I would like to be included, obviously.
00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:59.759
But um, yeah, there is that fear that, and I know that it will probably not get picked up, but I want to be able to say that I did it.
00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:10.799
But there is also the fear of doing it and putting myself out there, and obviously it it would be my very first one.
00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:17.200
I mean, what are the odds that my very first idea would actually be picked up and come to life?
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:18.399
That would be amazing.
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:19.440
I would love that.
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:29.519
And maybe if for some reason I could get investors to even make it like a I don't know, an independent film, something, I don't know.
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:30.799
I will I would love it.
00:16:30.960 --> 00:16:38.320
It would be I I think the story would resonate with a lot of people, but I'm still gonna move forward with it.
00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:40.960
So I'm excited about that.
00:16:41.120 --> 00:16:51.600
But there, you know, there's like I said, there's a lot of hesitation for me to obviously keep doing what I'm already doing.
00:16:51.679 --> 00:17:02.799
I you know, my job, my day job, and my night job, the things that I'm already doing, and disrupting that, it's kind of I mean, it's a little scary.
00:17:04.000 --> 00:17:07.599
Mostly for me right now is the financial aspect of it.
00:17:07.839 --> 00:17:21.359
Um if if I knew that we we could be supported for a few months without me having to work, I would I would probably quit and just focus on doing that or ask for leave or something like that.
00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:22.559
But I don't I don't know.
00:17:22.720 --> 00:17:23.920
I don't know if that'll happen.
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:26.559
Um and that's fine.
00:17:26.799 --> 00:17:34.000
So I'll do a little bit here and a little bit there and keep doing the podcasts and all that jazz.
00:17:34.319 --> 00:17:39.440
But it's definitely definitely different.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:41.200
And yeah.
00:17:42.079 --> 00:17:49.279
And I don't and I don't feel like because there's a lot of times where people feel like, you know, age or anything like that.
00:17:50.720 --> 00:17:52.960
I don't think that I'm old, old.
00:17:53.039 --> 00:17:55.359
I don't think that I've passed that part.
00:17:55.839 --> 00:17:57.759
So I'm kind of excited for that.
00:17:57.920 --> 00:18:05.440
I actually feel like my age and knowledge and wisdom and lived experiences will actually help me help me for for this.
00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:07.920
So I'm kind of excited about that.
00:18:08.559 --> 00:18:10.880
But here's the part we don't say enough.
00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:13.920
The time will pass either way.
00:18:14.240 --> 00:18:18.319
Five years from now will show up whether you tried or not.
00:18:18.720 --> 00:18:27.039
The only difference is will you be five years older and wondering, or five years older and living differently?
00:18:27.279 --> 00:18:33.599
You don't need certainty, you don't need permission, you don't need a full plan.
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:36.880
You just need enough courage to take the next step.
00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:46.880
So if you've been thinking about starting your own business, I know I've had discussions about starting a business and idea I have ideas up the wazoo.
00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:52.640
If somebody wants an idea on something, just mention something to me and I will totally hit you back.
00:18:52.799 --> 00:18:56.079
I I definitely could have ideas for you.
00:18:56.880 --> 00:18:59.839
If you can, pause with this question.
00:19:00.559 --> 00:19:05.200
If it wasn't too late, what would I let myself want?
00:19:06.960 --> 00:19:13.599
Not to commit to, not announce to anyone, just want.
00:19:15.039 --> 00:19:18.720
If you're asking this question, it doesn't mean you've missed your chance.
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:23.920
It means you're paying attention, and that might be the most on time thing there is.
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:28.160
So in our next episode, we're talking about exhaustion.
00:19:28.400 --> 00:19:30.000
Why am I so tired?
00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:34.880
Spoiler alert, it's probably not because you're doing life wrong.
00:19:35.119 --> 00:19:38.000
Until then, be kind to yourself.
00:19:38.240 --> 00:19:41.680
You're not late, you're right where change begins.
00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:45.279
Thanks for listening, and I'll see you in the next episode.
00:19:45.599 --> 00:19:50.160
