► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is James Tiller and I own the F1 media company EverythingF1. I have done so since 2015 lately we have begun to grow amazingly fast in recent months. Our podcast delivers great chat from massive F1 fans. Talking about all the latest Breaking News, Race Reviews and Previews, interviews with people from the motorsport world, all delivered with our unique style and personality. Our listeners are our fans and we represent them as best as we can.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We started a podcast intermittently at first 2 years ago, but we only had a small team and it was difficult to find time to fit a regular show in with our other work commitments. Now our team has expanded, we have the ability to always provide 3 to 4 voices for every podcast. This means we hope to offer a new episode every week without fail.
Our goal initially was just to have a chat, with likeminded people about the sport that we were all passionate about. We soon realised that people liked listening to our opinions and banter, so decided to offer a weekly episode for our fans to listen to.
The production is relatively quick. We tend to write notes of the latest news from F1, in the two days running up to recording. Then we record a zoom call. This is then edited by our editor Adam Sheridan the next day. And released that evening. The first episode certainly took longer than that, as we were just getting used to running orders and structures, not to mention the learning curve of editing a podcast in a specific way. But now we are getting pretty smooth at the whole process.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We produce an episode every week. We take notes on Monday and Tuesday and decide on those days, what the best stories to focus on are. Then we record on a Wednesday evening. This can take an hour on slow news weeks, up to 3 hours at busy times. Then Adam does a great job of editing out all the bloopers the following day, ready to be released that evening.
We dont have a budget persé for this sort of thing. We have all bought a decent headset and equipment. But we are looking for sponsors that can help out with advertising and bringing on new listeners.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We gain a bigger following on our social media pages. It helps to show our fans that we know what we are talking about and hopefully gives the impression that they are in a great place to acquire their daily fix of F1 news.
We dont currently have any sponsorship. But its somewhere we are always open to negotiation.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We all have a decent headset or microphone for using on a zoom call which we record in separate channels, for ease of editing.
We tend to write notes of the latest news from F1, in the two days running up to recording. This is then edited by our editor Adam the next day. And released that evening. Our guests will have the option of Zoom call or in person, but during these times, I think the majority will be done through zoom until the situation with the world calms down.
► How do you market your show?
We have a reach of 1.2 million each month on facebook. So that is our main channel of promotion. We have 25k likes on our Facebook page, 6k fans in our members group. Not forgetting our Twitter, Instagram and YouTube followers
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Without the notes made before the podcast, it's very difficult to string it all together in a coherent podcast. We have tried without and it just didn't sound right. We always have f1 articles open in different tabs on our browsers so we can reference key things and quotes. Plus it sounds great if you have multiple people cohosting, that you discuss which member of the panel wants to talk about what news story before pressing record.
