► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are Will and Emma, a married couple living in Idaho. Our podcast is called We Watch Dead People. In it, we discuss horror movies, new and old. It is a great podcast for horror aficionados and film buffs, in general.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
When we got together, Will's love of horror movies was a point of contention — Emma could not stand them. But after talking to other people and realizing that lots of couples are split on horror, we decided it could be fun to turn the idea into a podcast. Will is obsessed with the genre and has seen lots of these movies already, but Emma is coming to most of them fresh. It leads to a robust and fun discussion for horror fans and film fans in general.
We started the show in 2018 and got things rolling fairly quickly. We had a USB microphone and a laptop so the technical requirements were pretty well met. And we did not have huge aspirations for the show — we just wanted to have fun, watch entertaining movies, and have exciting discussions.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We aim to release episodes weekly. Throughout the week, we will watch the movie we've scheduled, outlined our conversation, record, edit, and publish. It sounds simple but, considering we both have day jobs, the process usually does take all week.
We are eager to get back into the show because we had to take a hiatus due to COVID. It may seem like the perfect time to double-down on a podcast, but we had a lot of life changes — new careers, a move across the country, marriage. But as things settle back down, we are eager to get We Watch Dead People rolling again.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
While we do not currently have any sponsorships — we are happy to take inquiries! — we have gained a lot from doing this show. We have gotten to share our love for movies with each other and with friends. And having energetic discussions about film, especially discussions in which we disagree with one another, has been a healthy outlet for our relationship. It has really brought us closer together in so many ways.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Currently, we use Yeti microphones processed through Garageband on a MacBook Pro. We are hoping to upgrade to a more professional setup in the near-future, but this has worked well (mostly) thus far.
► How do you market your show?
We have distributed our show to as many platforms as possible but we have found Spotify to be the fastest-growing outlet for us. I think the number of young people using the platform, in addition to the ease of its UI, has made it a popular choice.
Emma has experience in social media marketing, so she has worked to leverage social for our podcast. Any suggestions would be welcome!
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
It may seem obvious, but the best advice is to just do it. Listen to your favorite podcasts, take what works, and go for it. Even if no one is listening, the worst thing is that you have created something fun and fulfilling. And if you really care about it and put time into it, I trust people will respond to it in due time.
