Listen Notes is approaching its 10th anniversary. Over the last decade, we’ve made a conscious effort to be the "good guys" in SaaS. While most companies force users into predatory long-term subscriptions, we’ve stuck to a small-business-friendly model: on-demand, one-time payments and Fair Billing for API Pro plan. You buy what you need, you leave when you’re done, and you’re always welcome back. No pressure.
I love supporting indie hackers and side-hustlers. I was one myself 11 years ago. But lately, there’s a disheartening trend: a rise in "pre-professional" behavior.
Some new entrepreneurs seem to think that being "indie" is a license to abuse other businesses. The mindset is often: "I’m just starting out, so I deserve this for free. How dare you charge me? If you don’t give me what I want, I’ll dispute the charges or blast you on social media."
Here is the reality check: You cannot build a business by trying to tear others down.
If you want to make money eventually, remember that karma is real. Imagine how you’ll feel when your future customers treat your hard work with that same sense of entitlement.
My advice? Learn to be professional before building your own business. Respect the ecosystem you’re trying to join.
