Mackay attended Sydney Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, where he first started acting in school plays.Mackay studied at the University of Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history and English literature, before training as an actor at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth.
