Nai-update:
Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton (6 October 1903 – 25 June 1995) was an Anglo-Irish physicist and Nobel laureate for his work with John Cockcroft with "atom-smashing" experiments done at Cambridge University in the early 1930s, and so became the first person in history to split the atom.
== Early years ==
ernest walton was born in Abbeyside, Dungarvan, County Waterford to a Methodist minister father, Rev John Walton (1874–1936) and Anna Sinton (1874–1906). In those days a general clergyman's family moved once every three years, and this practice carried Ernest and his family, while he was a small child, to Rathkeale, County Limerick (where his mother died) and to County Monaghan.

Experts estimate that fossil-fuel burning power plants, such as the one pictured here, a peat fired plant in Ireland at Shannonbridge, Co Offaly, lose up to 70 per cent of their energy through heat losses. New nano materials could change all that [Credit: Wi…
Special Relativity: E=mc², Unraveling Mass-Energy Equivalence
E=mc²: The Equation That Changed the UniverseIn 1905, Albert Einstein published a three-page paper that forever changed physics. His equation, E=mc², revealed that mass and energy are interchangeable, reshaping everything from nuclear power to cosmology.For centuries, mass and energy were seen as s…
The Science of the Large Hadron Collider
Ireland has finally joined CERN as an associate member, opening the doors of the world’s biggest scientific instrument to Irish researchers for the first time. And what a machine to step into. This week, Professor Luke takes us deep inside the Large Hadron Collider — the 27-kilometre, super-cooled,…
How the Atom Was Split for the First Time
Ever since the discovery of the proton in 1919 by Ernest Rutherford, scientists had been on a mission to break atoms apart, splitting them into their smaller components in hopes of changing elements into others. This was first successfully done by two of Rutherford's pupils, John Cockcroft and Erne…
