Um, and I hope you guys are ready because I have some fun stuff planned uh to talk about uh this time around.
00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:58.640
If you are just getting with me, I had a first mini series on how to therapy.
00:00:58.880 --> 00:01:06.959
So just talking about the process, talking about you know what that entails and and how to go about it and what therapy even looks like.
00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:14.480
So go ahead, check it out, YouTube and other streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple, Podcast.
00:01:14.799 --> 00:01:23.760
Go ahead and check it out, leave some comments, DM me on Instagram, share it, all the things so we can keep the conversation going.
00:01:24.079 --> 00:01:24.959
Alright.
00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:29.760
But uh, today I got a confession to make.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:34.400
Um, I'm black, right?
00:01:35.680 --> 00:01:37.599
And I go to therapy.
00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:41.439
That's my confession right there.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:44.640
I'm black and I go to therapy.
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:50.079
Um, if you didn't notice the title, right, we're talking about stigmas today.
00:01:50.400 --> 00:02:12.319
And one of the things that I noticed that like over the years that uh especially like after COVID, it's become it's become a little bit more common for minorities to seek out uh professional help, but there is still some stigma attached uh to minorities in mental health when we think about it.
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:18.080
Um and a lot of times it's like you know, we just don't do that.
00:02:18.240 --> 00:02:20.000
Like that's that's not what we do.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:28.240
Like, um, or it's like, you know what, I think, you know, you know, other people, they got more pressing problems than us.
00:02:28.319 --> 00:02:31.199
Like, we we we cool, we cool over here.
00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:37.120
Um, or we're like, you know what, like, you know, that's why I got auntie and them.
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:39.759
That's why I got my mom, that's why I got bestie.
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:43.680
Like, you know, I call them up, like I can talk to them, like that's cool, that's it.
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:44.319
Right.
00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:47.039
And you probably said some of these things.
00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:54.000
You probably listen in and like, yeah, you know, like I I agree with those stigmas, I agree with those phrases and stuff like that.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.840
Um, and I gotta admit, like, even as a therapist, I made these same statements as well.
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:17.120
So ain't no judgment passing anybody, but I had to learn that like these things are a part of uh a part of our culture, a part of our our race, a part of what we believe to be true, and this is what a stigma is.
00:03:17.280 --> 00:03:21.919
Um, if you don't know me, I'm I'm big on let me look this definition up.
00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:24.479
Let's get some actual wording here.
00:03:24.639 --> 00:03:27.360
And so I looked up stigma, right?
00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:36.319
And stigma is it's a set of negative and unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:40.000
It is a mark of shame or discredit.
00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:43.439
Hmm.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:50.159
I think that really fits therapy in a nutshell for us, right?
00:03:50.479 --> 00:03:52.560
It's it's it's shameful, right?
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:59.360
And um, and I imagine, right, when I was thinking about like why is this such a big deal?
00:03:59.520 --> 00:04:02.960
Like, why is this such a stigma for us?
00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:07.919
Why is there so much shame associated with therapy for us?
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:12.159
And I thought of two things that came to mind, and I'm gonna break them down today.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:19.040
And those two things are are the couch, right, and a box of tissues.
00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:26.879
And you probably like as soon as you heard me say the couch and a box of tissues, like your mind probably went there, right?
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:30.800
Because how many times on TV, anytime we see therapy, right?
00:04:30.959 --> 00:04:35.680
We see the person laying on the couch, they feed up, you know, they saying, Yo, doc, and da-da-da-da.
00:04:35.839 --> 00:04:44.000
They spilling all their problems, and then you see the person, you know, blowing their nose all hard, sobbing and stuff, right?
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:45.600
Right, we we saw that.
00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:59.680
Every, every I guarantee you, I put 99.9% of the time, that's how we see therapy being portrayed on um on TV and in media.
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:06.560
Now, I meant that like if you're going to person if you're going to in-person therapy, because I know we have telehealth now, right?
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:07.360
So it's different.
00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:10.959
Sometimes we in our car, sometimes we be at the barbershop.
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:13.279
I had some people at the nail sign, whatever, right?
00:05:13.439 --> 00:05:18.160
I mean, you should be in a in a personal space, but anyway, that's a different conversation.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:26.319
Um, if you're going to in-person therapy, you often go and see a couch or a comfortable chair, right?
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:29.439
And you go and definitely see a box of tissues, right?
00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:41.839
But let me break down like how we as minorities, as black people, as as who we are, how we see the couch in the box of tissues, right?
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:47.600
Because for us, these are not just things, these are not just uh uh something in the room, right?
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:56.160
But these actually signify some things for us that we as a culture uh struggle with, I believe.
00:05:56.399 --> 00:05:58.319
And so let me break it down, right?
00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:00.720
Imagine a couch, right?
00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:07.839
For me, when I think about a couch, a couch signifies rest.
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:26.079
Um, it's a place where you know we can binge our favorite show, uh, we can take a nap, you know, we put our feet up, we grab some snacks, we spend time with the family, like it's it's it's it's a place where we just we just chillin', right?
00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:33.759
And as black people, right, it's in the minorities, it's not often that we choose rest.
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:36.480
A matter of fact, you know what?
00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:40.000
It's not often that we choose rest guilt-free.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:49.040
We're often taught as a as a culture that rest is not productive, rest is not productivity.
00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:54.720
We're taught that, you know, we gotta be on the ground, we gotta be hustling, we gotta be ahead of the game.
00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:00.079
Um, and then we know that we know that famous saying of like, you know, you can sleep when you dead.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:02.319
You got a whole lot of time to rest.
00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:05.439
Like, you could do that when you dead.
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:08.639
Let me ask you this.
00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:14.240
Let me let me let me put it in into some some perspective that you might be familiar with.
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:34.879
How many times growing up, even if you you a kid now listening to this podcast, how many times did your parents see you sitting down, right, and make you go clean something or do or just do something just because?
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:39.439
Because you chilling too hard.
00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:53.680
How many times, right, did you feel bad for being in the house all day and not doing a chore?
00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:56.879
Not doing a chore or something productive?
00:07:58.959 --> 00:08:01.360
That was that was me last week, y'all.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:06.959
How many times, right, did you feel that you didn't earn the rest?
00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:10.319
What you tired for?
00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:13.040
What you resting for?
00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:19.360
I didn't I didn't do all the things I wanted to do, so I can't rest yet.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:32.639
But today, right, on this platform, no matter what day you listening to it, or maybe listen to it at night right now, right?
00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:35.279
Right now in this moment, right?
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:38.960
I wanna give you permission to rest.
00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:42.559
Let that let that seep in.
00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:51.919
I give you permission to let go of the thought that rest is not productive.
00:08:55.360 --> 00:08:57.600
We breaking stigmas, y'all.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:00.000
We breaking stigmas.
00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:01.759
You can rest.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:03.440
You can rest.
00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.039
And so here we go with the box of tissues, right?
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:09.200
Our famous box of tissues, right?
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:10.399
Remember, remember the scene.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:13.759
Let's let's let's let's imagine in our heads, let's play it back, right?
00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:16.639
We see the heart blow of the nose, right?
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:20.240
We see the puddle of uncomfortable tears, right?
00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:28.080
They just got broken up with, or this just happened, or they got uh they failed a test, or they they mom told them this, right?
00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:36.879
And and we looking at this person, we like, yo, yo, they tripping, like it ain't even that deep.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:40.960
Like, I can never, like, they doing all this, ain't that embarrassing?
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:43.120
Like, we judging them hard, right?
00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:44.879
Or we laughing, right?
00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:47.759
We laughing, right?
00:09:47.840 --> 00:09:54.080
And this and this makes sense because our culture, we have deemed emotions as weak.
00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:54.799
Right?
00:09:54.960 --> 00:09:57.759
It's it's not, it's not right, it's not normal, right?
00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:00.639
That's in like what you crying for, right?
00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:06.639
Or or you know, stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about.
00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:10.960
Like you just gave me something to cry about, that's why I'm crying.
00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:15.840
You you you just you just beat me, and so I'm gonna cry because it hurt.
00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:29.039
Or I'm crying because I'm embarrassed, or I'm crying because I'm sad, or I'm crying because I know I shouldn't have done that thing, or I'm I'm crying because I'm frustrated and I'm angry.
00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:36.639
I'm I'm crying because I I just don't have the words, or I'm crying because get the feelings will out, right?
00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:38.799
And quick plug right here.
00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:42.720
If you don't know what a feelings will is, Google that, John, right?
00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:44.399
I'm from Philly, John.
00:10:45.279 --> 00:11:03.279
Google feelings will, and then I want you to keep that on your phone, and so anytime where you're trying to get your feelings out, you're trying to understand what you're feeling, go ahead and look at that, pick something out, pick something out to help you express what you're going through, right?
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:06.399
Because that's something that we we weren't taught, right?
00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:14.159
And especially for our our our black boys or our minority boys, right?
00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:16.960
Is stop crying, you're a boy.
00:11:18.559 --> 00:11:25.039
Stop all that, you know, pick yourself up, fix your face, stop being so sensitive, right?
00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:33.759
We we start saying all these things because that's what something that we were we were taught, and we just passed it down, right?
00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:37.039
I I've even said those things.
00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:50.000
I'm even still trying to catch myself in those times where I do go back to those stigmas, where I do go back to those sayings, where I do go back to this is how our culture raised us.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:51.679
So it was doing something right.
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:56.480
I turned out good, my brothers turned out good, my uncle turned out good, my my mom's still here.
00:11:56.639 --> 00:12:02.960
Like, you know, we start to say, you know, well, they made it through, that's how they made it through, so we gotta keep it going.
00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:24.879
But all this did was teach us how to suppress and store our feelings, which is why we're dying from heart attacks, which is why we have high blood pressure, and it's not the sole reason why, you know, why some of these things, right?
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:41.840
But um, but we haven't ulcers and different medical issues because of suppressed feelings, because we never learned that it was okay.
00:12:42.000 --> 00:13:01.200
We never had a space that said, though such and such happened to you three years ago, or though you lost this and such person, you can still cry, you can still have your feelings, you can still go through, right?
00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:04.080
Matter of fact, you can go through.
00:13:04.159 --> 00:13:08.399
I don't think that's something that our culture does a good job of teaching.
00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:20.559
We we teach how to mask, we teach how to just get by and just how uh to perform and to just check boxes and do what we gotta do.
00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:32.000
But as I was thinking, and as I was like really just trying to dig about like why do we have stigmas?
00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:34.080
Like, we what is going on here?
00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:43.039
And the biggest thing I realized about stigma is that stigma, stigma it comes from our ignorance.
00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:49.360
Like, how many people have said all these things that I just talked about?
00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:56.480
Um and and how many people that passed all these stigmas actually actually went to therapy?
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:00.240
Like, I bet you my mom didn't go to therapy.
00:14:00.960 --> 00:14:11.679
Like, I I I bet you I I I guarantee you like Pop pop don't don't even know don't even know where the therapy office is.
00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:22.559
Like, I I bet you like Auntie got so many things going on in her life and she never sat down and talked about it with any with anyone.
00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:35.919
Like, all these people that have passed on these things, like and even in my personal personal life, people that have told me things about you know going to therapy that we don't do that, they haven't done it themselves.
00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:38.639
And I used to be one of them people too.
00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:48.399
Because I was just I was just saying what people have said to me, like, oh, that's just something that we don't do, but I don't even know what it is.
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:52.000
I don't even know what it is.
00:14:53.039 --> 00:14:59.039
How many have actually even accepted that they have challenges mentally?
00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:08.639
We got a lot of undiagnosed minorities walking around, and I promise you, I'm gonna do something with that title, Undiagnosed Minorities.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:33.360
But back to the to the topic at hand, like we got so many people walking around with um undiagnosed and untreated depression, anxiety, autism, um bipolar disorder, um, borderline personality disorder, uh, post-traumatic stress disorder.
00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:51.039
We got so many people walking around with these things because I can still function, I can still do what I gotta do, I can still go to work and make my money, I can still provide for my kids, I can still cook, I don't look like it, so I'm I'm cool, right?
00:15:51.279 --> 00:15:58.559
All these different things, but if we really look at it, those things are showing up in how we even teach our children.
00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:12.960
These things are showing up in how we interact with others, these things are showing up in how we're losing so many jobs and we're going back and forth with different jobs, or we're getting uh kicked out of apartments and having to find different places.
00:16:13.039 --> 00:16:17.360
We're we're bad we're managing our money, uh, all these different things.
00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:21.840
Like our challenges are showing up in other spaces.
00:16:22.080 --> 00:16:26.159
Maybe look like we're floating by, but they're they're showing up.
00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:39.279
And it's our job to learn about these things, it's our job uh to really address you know what is actually going on with me, and not just the surface, right?
00:16:39.440 --> 00:16:45.919
Not just, you know, going to the doctors and going to church and and whatever else you do, right?
00:16:46.399 --> 00:17:00.080
But it is okay to go to therapy, it is okay to really sit down with your thoughts and understand them and understand why you think this way, why you behave this way, why you operate like this.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:03.919
It's okay, y'all.
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:07.440
It's okay, y'all.
00:17:08.720 --> 00:17:10.640
We can break this stigma.
00:17:10.960 --> 00:17:12.880
We don't gotta do it for the culture.
00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:16.640
Cause doing it for the culture ain't doing nothing for us.
00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:26.559
Doing it for the culture is is really it's really holding us back, y'all.
00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:34.960
We're trying to stay faithful to something that that really ain't serving us in in the best way.
00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:42.000
And then not just us, but generations and generations and generations and generations, right?
00:17:42.079 --> 00:17:43.920
This just ain't hop happened.
00:17:44.079 --> 00:17:46.240
This just didn't happen overnight.
00:17:48.000 --> 00:18:05.359
But uh this stigma comes from generations of generations of generations saying these things, and then us repeating those things, and then our kids repeating this their things, and then our children's children repeating these things, right?
00:18:06.480 --> 00:18:21.039
But we can stop that and how we stop that is getting educated, how we stop that is actually trying things out before before we say, Oh no, we just don't do that, or no, that don't work.
00:18:21.599 --> 00:18:21.920
Right?
00:18:22.079 --> 00:18:24.240
You know that's saying don't knock it till you try it.
00:18:24.480 --> 00:18:41.599
It's real, it's real and so instead of uh instead of passing down uh opinions or or fear or stigmas let's pass down facts.
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:46.319
Let's pass down facts.
00:18:48.799 --> 00:18:50.240
So do your research.
00:18:50.480 --> 00:18:54.480
You know, you don't gotta just listen to me, right?
00:18:54.640 --> 00:19:02.319
Because I got the mic or because you know you tuned in, or because you know I got some letters behind my name or I got a degree, right?
00:19:02.400 --> 00:19:04.079
You don't gotta listen to me.
00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:07.519
I don't know why that precious uh thing just came in my head.
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:09.680
Think you got your degree, think you know everything, right?
00:19:09.759 --> 00:19:11.839
But no, I don't know everything, right?
00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:17.359
And so it is your job to go ahead and educate yourself, right?
00:19:17.599 --> 00:19:22.799
It's your job to go ahead and experience it.
00:19:23.200 --> 00:19:36.559
And if you still like nah, I don't want to do that, Brie, let's stop passing down the stigmas by telling other people not to do that just because we won't do it.
00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:43.519
Let's stop judging them for getting the help that they feel like they need to overcome whatever they're going through.
00:19:44.640 --> 00:19:45.279
Alright.
00:19:47.200 --> 00:19:51.200
So that brings us to the end, y'all.
00:19:51.440 --> 00:19:52.880
I thank y'all for tuning in.
00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:56.960
Remember to go follow Reaching Minds on Instagram.
00:19:57.119 --> 00:19:58.400
I'll see y'all soon.
00:19:58.720 --> 00:20:00.079
Aye bye.
