Why pray for the Souls in Purgatory
- To participate in the Paschal Mystery. Through prayer for the faithful departed, Catholics believe they participate in the Paschal Mystery—the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This mystery is the source of our hope and salvation, and it reminds us that even death cannot separate us from the love of God.
- To fulfill the spiritual works of mercy. Praying for the dead is considered one of the spiritual works of mercy in Catholicism. It is a way of caring for the spiritual needs of others, even those who have passed away.
