Her path into law began in deeply personal circumstances. Originally trained as a scientist, Mary lost her husband to cancer caused by occupational exposure to benzene. Understanding the science behind what had happened compelled her to pursue a law degree and build a career fighting for people harmed by dangerous products, toxic exposure, corporate wrongdoing, and preventable negligence.
Across this three-part conversation, Miles talks with Mary about the experiences and cases that shaped her remarkable career. They discuss her transition from science to law, the decades-long fight against the lead paint industry, major cases involving toxic exposure, the Ghost Ship fire, a devastating bicycle crash in Yosemite National Park, and the moments when securing justice required more than simply accepting the law as it stood.
Mary also reflects on the persistence required to take on cases that can last for years, the importance of understanding the science behind a claim, and what it means to use the law as a tool for wider social change.Whether you heard the conversation the first time or are discovering it now, this series offers a rare look inside the career and thinking of a legendary trial lawyer whose work has helped change lives, industries, and the law itself.
