00:02:14.475 --> 00:02:22.997
Imani Eli, and for Hot Takes we have Anne-Marie Veneroni here to discuss Big Brothers, big Sisters' upcoming annual event.
00:02:22.997 --> 00:02:25.479
Anne-marie, welcome to Authentically Detroit.
00:02:25.778 --> 00:02:27.079
Thank you so much for having me.
00:02:33.020 --> 00:02:35.832
We're excited to have you, and so, before we went on air, you and Donna were discussing a little bit of Big Brothers, big Sisters history.
00:02:35.832 --> 00:02:37.379
Donna, you got some connection to Big Brothers, big Sisters.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:38.080
Absolutely.
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:54.633
You know, I worked at Warren Counter Development Coalition from 1993 until 1997 as deputy director for programs and I left here in 1999 to become vice president for programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit.
00:02:54.633 --> 00:03:03.788
It was a different Big Brothers Big Sisters at that time, but lots of great work, lots of opportunity to really understand the value of mentoring.
00:03:03.788 --> 00:03:05.872
And we had the best fundraisers.
00:03:05.872 --> 00:03:07.074
Do you still do the bowling?
00:03:07.719 --> 00:03:10.026
Well, some areas do the bowling.
00:03:10.026 --> 00:03:11.189
Bowling got played out.
00:03:11.950 --> 00:03:15.085
Bowling that was a major fundraiser.
00:03:15.125 --> 00:03:17.191
Bowling was it for a while.
00:03:17.191 --> 00:03:19.388
All the companies were like please don't make me bowl anymore.
00:03:21.161 --> 00:03:23.727
We're excited to talk about the big auction a little later on.
00:03:23.727 --> 00:03:25.592
Ebony Walls has joined us.
00:03:25.592 --> 00:03:28.006
Welcome to Authentically Detroit, ebony.
00:03:28.026 --> 00:03:30.111
Thank you, Hi everyone.
00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:32.661
So excited to have you on Y'all.
00:03:32.661 --> 00:03:38.372
It is a balmy and sunny 60 degrees in the city of Detroit.
00:03:38.372 --> 00:03:39.174
Donna, how you doing.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:40.502
I can't wait to go home and ride my bike.
00:03:40.521 --> 00:03:44.889
That's all I'm doing, great I thought you was going to say you was throwing something on the grill because I was going to come over.
00:03:45.069 --> 00:03:47.914
Dog, you know, if I can get you over, I will throw something on the grill.
00:03:47.914 --> 00:03:52.384
So I'm going to throw something on the grill, then ride my bike.
00:03:53.206 --> 00:03:58.080
Oh man, you know, today is, you know everybody.
00:03:58.080 --> 00:04:01.105
Don't be fooled, y'all know how Michigan does, but I am taking it all in.
00:04:01.105 --> 00:04:11.312
It's amazing outside and I it's we well deserve, because detroit is so ugly in the winter time I'd be like I don't want nobody taking our pictures in the winter.
00:04:11.312 --> 00:04:14.622
Come in the spring, summer, when we pretty again.
00:04:14.622 --> 00:04:23.204
Oh man, all right, it's time for hot takes, where we run down some of the week's top headlines in the city of detroit for takes.
00:04:23.845 --> 00:04:28.694
Barrier-breaking Detroit journalist and musician Luther Keith dies at 74.
00:04:28.694 --> 00:04:32.411
This is by Michael Walker, christine Ferretti and Bryce Huffman at Purge Detroit.
00:04:32.411 --> 00:04:44.134
A longtime Detroit journalist who parlayed a barrier-breaking career in the news industry into decades of uplifting Detroit neighborhoods is being remembered for his vibrant contributions to the city.
00:04:44.134 --> 00:04:53.747
Luther Keith, a trailblazing journalist who was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame for his decades long career at the Detroit News, died Wednesday.
00:04:53.747 --> 00:04:57.581
Close friends of Keith and his family said he was 74.
00:04:57.581 --> 00:05:09.415
After retiring from the paper in 2005, he founded Arise Detroit, a nonprofit coalition of more than 400 community organizations that promotes volunteerism and activism.
00:05:09.415 --> 00:05:22.521
Keith was also a well-known fixture in Detroit's music scene, following a later in life passion as a blues musician under the name Luther Batman Keith.
00:05:22.521 --> 00:05:31.490
Veteran journalist Felicia Henderson worked with Keefe at the news for several years and the pair went on to maintain a 35-year friendship.
00:05:31.490 --> 00:05:42.415
She kickstarted her career in the Detroit news due to Keefe, who asked if she wanted to join the paper doing a conference for the National Association of Black Journalists in 1985.
00:05:42.415 --> 00:05:48.641
Keefe's last act was a performance at Baker's Keyboard Lounge earlier Wednesday night.
00:05:49.242 --> 00:05:56.629
After graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Detroit, keith began his career at the news in 1972.
00:05:56.629 --> 00:06:00.420
His more than 30 years at the paper came with many firsts.
00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:06.677
In 1973, keith became the first black sports reporter at a major Detroit daily.
00:06:06.677 --> 00:06:15.663
Six years later he was the first black reporter to cover the state capitol and in 1982, he became the first black editor at the news.
00:06:15.663 --> 00:06:28.607
In 1985, keith took a leave of absence from the news to create the Journalism Institute for Minorities at Wayne State University, which recruited and trained college students for careers in the industry.
00:06:28.607 --> 00:06:33.466
The program is now known as the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity.
00:06:33.466 --> 00:06:44.024
Keith was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995 and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists last May.
00:06:44.966 --> 00:06:47.310
Although Keefe's passion for journalism was notable.
00:06:47.310 --> 00:06:49.473
It was far from his only strength.
00:06:49.473 --> 00:07:04.925
Vicki Thomas lauded Keefe for his work to stand up and lead Arise Detroit and its Neighborhoods Day, which encouraged communities throughout the city to celebrate their strengths and identify and identities with giveaways, cleanup projects and events, and identify in identities with giveaways, cleanup projects and events.
00:07:04.925 --> 00:07:12.213
When Keefe started Neighborhoods Day in 2007, he never thought it would become the large event it is today.
00:07:12.213 --> 00:07:14.136
He told Bruce Detroit in 2023.
00:07:14.136 --> 00:07:19.240
He said it's a testament to the people in the neighborhoods and how much they want to improve their city.
00:07:19.240 --> 00:07:29.512
Keefe's legacy is also marked by his love for his wife Jacqueline, daughter Aaron and brother Terrence Keefe, a Wayne County probate court judge.
00:07:29.512 --> 00:07:35.312
Rest in paradise to the legend Luther Keefe, donna.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:40.526
I saw Luther a couple of weeks ago at his uncle a luncheon for Damon Keefe.
00:07:40.526 --> 00:07:54.956
That's held every year, uncle, a luncheon for Damon Keith that's held every year and so he was there with Aaron and actually we were all recognized by the speakers as working at important Detroit nonprofits and so we had a chance to connect and that was really a beautiful thing.
00:07:54.956 --> 00:07:58.153
I had no idea this was going to be the last time I saw him.
00:07:58.153 --> 00:07:59.661
I probably would have talked a little longer.
00:07:59.661 --> 00:08:04.511
Our relationship with Luther goes back to Neighborhoods Day.
00:08:04.511 --> 00:08:09.850
We always participated, we always had our banners up and there was always something special that we did for Neighborhoods Day.
00:08:10.660 --> 00:08:31.408
I served briefly on the board of Arise Detroit, although my schedule did not allow me to continue, but I was actually a board member trying to support the organization and spoke at some of his events, and these past couple of years we've had him perform as a um, his as batman keith, and he was an amazing blues performer.
00:08:31.408 --> 00:08:32.793
His band was great.
00:08:32.793 --> 00:08:35.279
I love blues, but I like the old style blues.
00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:41.623
I don't like some of that new stuff people call the blues and they brought the dirty blues to the east side of detroit and people loved it.
00:08:41.623 --> 00:08:47.193
So, um, what can I say other than my heart really my heart was broken.
00:08:47.193 --> 00:08:49.368
He offered in so many people's careers.
00:08:49.368 --> 00:08:55.133
You know, our good friend Kim Trent said she would not be who she is without Luther Keith.
00:08:55.133 --> 00:08:57.447
She and her husband were mentored by him.
00:08:57.447 --> 00:09:05.714
The Detroit Free Press has an amazing article about him by Keith Owens, who was also who he jumpstarted his career.
00:09:06.360 --> 00:09:11.451
Luther Keith was not just the first but he also made way for other people to follow in his wake.
00:09:11.451 --> 00:09:23.028
If you don't get a chance to read, if you don't even read the Detroit Free Press, read this article by Keith Owens because it's very moving and really speaks to the power of friendship, the power of reinvention.
00:09:23.028 --> 00:09:24.683
What a wonderful person.
00:09:24.683 --> 00:09:25.548
He's going to be missed.
00:09:25.548 --> 00:09:32.000
He was an absolute giant and I know for you it means something special because you followed in his wake as a journalist.
00:09:32.620 --> 00:09:39.894
You know, growing up in the city of Detroit wanting to be a journalist, we only had a few black men to look to.
00:09:39.894 --> 00:09:42.767
Luther Keefe was one of those people.
00:09:42.767 --> 00:09:58.214
And Luther Keefe was one of those people and, interestingly enough, as I matriculated into this field, I met his daughter, erin Keefe, who is an attorney and a justice advocate and an amazing person, and we became friends.
00:09:58.214 --> 00:10:14.712
We call each other cousin, and I started hearing rumblings about his passing and I immediately hit up my friend, who confirmed that her dad passed, and so, as a journal, this is really an end of an era.
00:10:14.712 --> 00:10:23.551
This is signaling an end of an era, but as a friend to Erin Keith, I'm saddened for her.
00:10:23.551 --> 00:10:26.134
Her and her dad had the best relationship.
00:10:27.441 --> 00:10:49.285
I am a member of the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the NABJ, but last year SBJ honored Luther Keith with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and so imagine my surprise when I walk in and I see cousin Aaron Keefe there and Luther's entire family there to celebrate him and to amplify and uplift his legacy.
00:10:49.285 --> 00:10:50.749
He will be missed.
00:10:50.749 --> 00:10:52.933
We were not okay last Wednesday.
00:10:52.933 --> 00:10:54.923
I think we're doing a little better today.
00:10:54.923 --> 00:11:07.537
Um, and now it is time for us to send them off, as we do in the city of Detroit, uh, with a homegoing celebration, celebration of life, celebration of his legacy, and to pay our respects.
00:11:07.557 --> 00:11:14.253
Yeah, so his celebration of life is going to be at Fellowship Chapel.
00:11:14.653 --> 00:11:14.833
Yeah.
00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:19.052
And I think that the visitation is going to be at Kemp Funeral Home.
00:11:19.052 --> 00:11:20.500
We'll have information about his.
00:11:20.500 --> 00:11:21.624
I have it right here.
00:11:22.166 --> 00:11:23.208
Yeah, here we go, all right.
00:11:23.208 --> 00:11:30.553
So if you want to pay your respects, visitation and remarks will be held on Thursday, march 13, from 5 to 8.
00:11:30.553 --> 00:11:39.552
The program and remarks will start at 630 at Kemp Funeral Home that's located at 24585 Evergreen Road in Southfield, michigan.
00:11:39.552 --> 00:11:45.753
For the services, the family hour is going to be Friday, march 14th, from 10 to 11 at Fellowship Chapel.
00:11:45.753 --> 00:11:53.472
Y'all know where that is, on Otter Drive, and the funeral service will follow right after that at 11 am.
00:11:53.472 --> 00:12:05.572
The burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following the funeral service and the repass is to be announced, and so feel free to show up.
00:12:05.572 --> 00:12:11.488
Fellowship Chapel is large enough to pay your respects to Luther bad man Keith.
00:12:12.910 --> 00:12:22.504
And if you want to donate, if you want to contribute in some way, you can go to Arise Detroit and make a donation to his beloved nonprofit Arise Detroit to keep that hope alive.
00:12:22.864 --> 00:12:25.028
Yeah, yeah, we'll miss you.
00:12:25.028 --> 00:12:26.150
Luther Keefe man.
00:12:26.150 --> 00:12:33.773
All right, bid to build brighter futures at the great big auction.
00:12:33.773 --> 00:12:36.769
Try to say that five times real fast.
00:12:37.419 --> 00:12:52.414
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan, in partnership with Be A Part Of Me Consulting, invites the community to attend its premier fundraising event, the Great Big Auction, from 6 to 9 pm on Thursday, march 20th at the Cambria Hotel.
00:12:52.414 --> 00:13:00.994

00:13:00.994 --> 00:13:10.154
In the region, big Brothers, big Sisters helps youth achieve their full potential through mentoring and support programs that create lasting, positive change in their lives.

00:13:24.875 --> 00:13:45.912
The evening offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact by bidding on exclusive experiential auction packages, attending a VIP celebrity reception at Cambria's Five Iron Golf and enjoying a vibrant atmosphere while connecting with influential supporters of Big Brothers, big Sisters.
00:13:45.912 --> 00:13:51.432
Proceeds will directly support programs that pair local youth with caring adult mentors.
00:13:51.432 --> 00:13:53.647
Vip doors open at 5.30 pm.
00:13:53.647 --> 00:13:55.966
In general, admin is at 6 pm.
00:13:55.966 --> 00:13:58.408
The auction commences at 7.20 pm.
00:13:58.408 --> 00:14:06.625
There will also be an exciting live performance by the Urban Arts Orchestra, headed up by my classmate.
00:14:07.106 --> 00:14:08.671
Deshaun Jackson oh, he's great.
00:14:08.671 --> 00:14:11.005
The Urban Arts Orchestra is absolutely great.
00:14:11.005 --> 00:14:12.811
It's going to be dope, it is, it is.
00:14:12.811 --> 00:14:14.225
So talk about this event.
00:14:14.225 --> 00:14:19.369
I'm interested in what these experiential auction items are.
00:14:19.369 --> 00:14:20.070
What is that?
00:14:20.851 --> 00:14:22.355
Absolutely, so I'll jump right in.
00:14:22.355 --> 00:14:25.188
Yes, we love Deshaun Jones Urban Art Orchestra.
00:14:25.188 --> 00:14:30.211
Shout out to them for donating their time, service and talents on behalf of this event.
00:14:30.340 --> 00:14:31.548
They are amazing.
00:14:31.548 --> 00:14:33.102
It's hard If you haven't seen them perform.
00:14:33.102 --> 00:14:37.306
They perform quite frequently at the Michigan Central Station, so be sure to check them out there.
00:14:37.306 --> 00:14:41.890
So you gave a glowing introduction to the event.
00:14:41.890 --> 00:14:43.567
I feel like there's not much left to say.
00:14:43.567 --> 00:14:46.162
Flowing introduction to the event.
00:14:46.182 --> 00:14:50.831
I feel like there's not much left to say, but what I can say exclusively on this podcast is this experiential event is like no other fundraiser.
00:14:50.831 --> 00:14:55.328
It's a night full of fun, philanthropy, but also community right.
00:14:55.328 --> 00:15:08.767
We are honoring, celebrating our big brothers, big sisters who volunteer their time, talent and treasures to impact the lives of kids for the better, forever, while also creating a event that will include a speakeasy lounge, live performances by the orchestra.
00:15:08.767 --> 00:15:11.629
We're going to have top-notch food hors d'oeuvres.
00:15:11.629 --> 00:15:19.187
We have a five-iron VIP experience that's going to take place downstairs in the Cambria, in the PGA simulation area.
00:15:19.187 --> 00:15:24.349
We're going to have some surprise celebrity guests, some professional athletes, retired and active.
00:15:24.349 --> 00:15:26.364
You just never know who might walk through the doors.
00:15:26.364 --> 00:15:30.365
But, most importantly, we want you to walk through the doors and support Big Brothers, big Sisters.
00:15:30.485 --> 00:15:36.548
Talk about the mission of Big Brothers, big Sisters and why it is so important for people to support Anne-Marie.
00:15:37.270 --> 00:15:45.048
Well, the mission of Big Brothers, big Sisters is to create and support mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
00:15:45.048 --> 00:15:49.607
The vision for the organization is that all youth achieve their full potential.
00:15:49.607 --> 00:15:55.488
So you know, you kind of said it before it's the potential lies in every single child.
00:15:55.488 --> 00:15:58.802
It's not that we're creating it, we're not saving any kids.
00:15:58.802 --> 00:15:59.764
We're not doing anything like that.
00:15:59.764 --> 00:16:13.535
We're sort of allowing space for the young person to find themselves, to believe in themselves, believe in their ability, start to dream, start to become ambitious and aspirational.
00:16:14.100 --> 00:16:18.751
And we see transformative results in the kids that come out of the BBBS program.
00:16:18.751 --> 00:16:31.062
They are full of self-confidence, they improve their academic performance, they improve relationships with family and the community and they're two times more likely to go on to higher education after high school.
00:16:31.062 --> 00:16:42.644
There was just a recent study done by Big Brothers, big Sisters of America, in conjunction with Harvard University, that said the long-term economic outcomes for kids in the program are incredible.
00:16:42.644 --> 00:16:45.760
Like I said, two times more likely to go to college.
00:16:45.760 --> 00:16:52.653
Being a big closes the socioeconomic gap for these kids by two thirds.
00:16:52.653 --> 00:16:56.427
That is transformative for the child, for the family and the community.
00:16:56.808 --> 00:17:02.889
So, as I recall years ago, there was always a long waiting list, especially for young black men, is that?
00:17:02.931 --> 00:17:05.324
still the case, absolutely and unfortunately.
00:17:05.324 --> 00:17:17.471
We have over 200 kids on our wait list currently, the majority of which are young black boys looking for male mentors black male mentors so important.
00:17:17.471 --> 00:17:19.761
They're looking for that male role model.
00:17:19.761 --> 00:17:25.480
The parent or the guardian has specifically specified that is what they would like for their young person.
00:17:25.480 --> 00:17:27.766
So I'm putting out a call.
00:17:28.186 --> 00:17:29.990
I invite you to do it.
00:17:29.990 --> 00:17:33.163
I invite you know listeners if you have time to volunteer.
00:17:33.163 --> 00:17:34.026
What does that look like?
00:17:34.586 --> 00:17:36.491
Well, it's easier than you think.
00:17:36.491 --> 00:17:39.787
I think a lot of people are intimidated, but you don't need to be at all.
00:17:39.787 --> 00:17:48.260
What it looks like is you will go through an intensive interview process with our staff very friendly, awesome staff, um.
00:17:48.260 --> 00:17:49.163
So they get to know you.
00:17:49.163 --> 00:17:51.631
They get to know what you like, they get to know what you're interested in.
00:17:51.631 --> 00:17:53.646
They get to know you as a person.
00:17:53.646 --> 00:18:00.200
They very intentionally match you with a young person, uh, between the ages of seven and 16.
00:18:00.359 --> 00:18:04.403
We stopped matching at the age of 16 because it takes a while for them to get matched, um.
00:18:04.403 --> 00:18:08.568
But then, once you're matched up, you do things in the community together that you both enjoy.
00:18:08.568 --> 00:18:10.790
So you set goals together.
00:18:10.790 --> 00:18:11.932
You set goals.
00:18:12.031 --> 00:18:21.451
Maybe you know you want to check out, go to a live sporting event together, or maybe you want to go to a museum, or maybe you want to learn more about nature and get closer to nature.
00:18:21.451 --> 00:18:48.575
These are goals that you set with your match support specialist at Big Brothers, big Sisters, who checks in with you on a regular basis to determine how the match is going, if there are any problems concerns making sure that you're both on track and that everybody is sort of happy, but you get together at least two times a month and you do whatever you like you can get ice cream, you can go play basketball, you can work on homework, you could bake a cake, you could just talk and figure out how things are going with each other.
00:18:48.575 --> 00:19:00.375
Oftentimes, that's really all a young person is looking for is a nonjudgmental person to just be there for them to share in the joys and divide the sorrows.
00:19:00.980 --> 00:19:01.442
A clarion.
00:19:01.442 --> 00:19:02.406
Called a black man?
00:19:02.681 --> 00:19:05.134
Yes, yes, and of course, women and people of other backgrounds as wellion call to black men.
00:19:05.155 --> 00:19:08.626
Yes, and of course women and people of other backgrounds, as well, but certainly black men yes.
00:19:08.930 --> 00:19:22.728
Because, we definitely want to make sure that all of our young people have somebody who loves them and cares about them and guides them outside of home, even the best parents, and I say this- as a grandparent but, it takes a village.
00:19:22.728 --> 00:19:24.709
Even the best parents cannot do it by themselves.
00:19:24.709 --> 00:19:25.086
A grandparent when A grandparent?
00:19:25.037 --> 00:19:26.667
But it takes a village, even the best parents cannot do it by themselves.
00:19:26.667 --> 00:19:26.942
A grandparent when?
00:19:26.942 --> 00:19:27.528
A grandparent Y'all please.
00:19:29.063 --> 00:19:30.548
I've got two and a half 32.
00:19:30.548 --> 00:19:31.810
Okay, I am 32.
00:19:31.810 --> 00:19:34.288
Thank you for bringing that up, plus 30.
00:19:34.288 --> 00:19:41.772
No, but I say that because I think it's important for us to understand that it's not a sign of weakness.
00:19:41.772 --> 00:19:43.363
And these are great kids.
00:19:43.784 --> 00:19:44.465
I would agree with you.
00:19:44.465 --> 00:19:46.068
I've actually said since day one.
00:19:46.068 --> 00:19:47.833
I've been with the organization for about eight years.
00:19:47.833 --> 00:19:58.819
I think the parents and the guardians are the secret weapon in this whole program because they recognize that it does take a village and they are welcoming of this person into their family.
00:19:58.819 --> 00:20:10.590
What we hear so often it's obviously there's transformative effects on the youth in the program, but I hear it all the time from the bigs in the program and the parents and the guardians.
00:20:10.590 --> 00:20:13.508
The program has changed their lives for the better.
00:20:13.508 --> 00:20:24.309
The big becomes a family member to the little and their parent and they end up Even after they're out of the Big Brothers, big Sisters program, which currently ends after they graduate high school.
00:20:24.770 --> 00:20:34.025
I have a million stories of people standing up in each other's weddings, celebrating the birth of children, traveling together, celebrating holidays at each other's family table.
00:20:34.025 --> 00:20:42.151
These are lifelong relationships that really support you know, support you as a person Deep down.
00:20:42.151 --> 00:20:47.513
These are strong and relationships I don't think you can take them for granted anymore.
00:20:47.513 --> 00:20:50.982
I think COVID did a number on kids and they don't.
00:20:50.982 --> 00:20:59.653
They lost the ability at some point, uh, or the opportunity, I should say, to create these genuine relationships and learn how to communicate.
00:20:59.653 --> 00:21:01.055
Learn how to compromise.
00:21:01.055 --> 00:21:02.678
Learn how to um.
00:21:02.678 --> 00:21:04.580
Learn how to compromise.
00:21:04.580 --> 00:21:05.241
Learn how to be you know.
00:21:05.321 --> 00:21:17.251
Show up in a relationship and I can even speak from a perspective of a former staff member with Big Brothers, big Sisters in various counties, but also a big sister, and I've had a little sister who was under six.
00:21:17.251 --> 00:21:26.358
I had a little sister who was going through her first year of middle school and then I had a little sister who was entering high school, but also her family dynamic was changing.
00:21:26.358 --> 00:21:27.761
Parents were getting divorced.
00:21:27.761 --> 00:21:42.896
She was looked at as that leader in the family and sometimes she just wanted to be a kid and so when we got together she had the opportunity to just be a kid and not feel like there was responsibility and a weight on her shoulders, and her mom walked me into their family as her additional daughter.
00:21:42.896 --> 00:21:52.442
And so even after the program ended, we still stay connected for those important holidays, as Anne-Marie says, those special occasions, even big, monumental moments in my life.
00:21:52.442 --> 00:21:53.815
They were a part of that.
00:21:53.954 --> 00:21:54.657
I love that.
00:21:54.849 --> 00:21:58.961
So it's rewarding the big as well as for the little, Absolutely.
00:21:58.961 --> 00:22:05.056
I think, it's also important to understand, for our listeners to understand, that it's not just about giving back.
00:22:05.056 --> 00:22:09.700
Sometimes the greatest gift is to give and it comes back at you.
00:22:09.700 --> 00:22:11.570
So thank you for the work that you do.
00:22:11.570 --> 00:22:15.239
Like I said, it was really, really powerful work back then.
00:22:15.239 --> 00:22:19.897
I've never forgotten it and it's so great to see that you guys are reshaping yourselves.
00:22:19.897 --> 00:22:23.313
But I do have a question how do people get a ticket to your event?
00:22:24.576 --> 00:22:29.876
Well, you can visit us on I was going to say the Great Big Auction at Big Brothers, big Sisters' website.

00:22:43.291 --> 00:22:45.674
I want to know what you got brewing.
00:22:45.674 --> 00:22:47.317
Can you give away something now?
00:22:47.457 --> 00:22:51.741
Well, we have we can we have something for everyone, for the sports enthusiasts for the.

00:23:07.597 --> 00:23:08.760
He's also a champion.
00:23:08.760 --> 00:23:11.338
Well, he's on your committee, right, he is, he's a champion.
00:23:11.338 --> 00:23:22.912
So just to get a little bit about our champions, these are individuals who have a connection to just changing youth lives for the better forever, through their own various nonprofits, their businesses, but also just as community leaders.
00:23:22.912 --> 00:23:29.615
So this year's champions features our emcee and host, lauren Winfrey from CBS News Detroit.
00:23:29.615 --> 00:23:31.115
We also did an interview with her today.
00:23:31.115 --> 00:23:34.057
Shout out to Lauren Joy Bell Dr Shanti.
00:23:34.057 --> 00:23:35.877

He is known for executive producing music videos for Glorilla, chris Brown, sexy Red, all the young people that the kids listen to, that I have no clue who are All of those artists.
00:24:02.371 --> 00:24:08.463
He represents them and he's offering a package for you to be on the set of a actual music video.
00:24:08.463 --> 00:24:13.039
So there's a lot of opportunities to come and donate, right, but you get something.
00:24:13.059 --> 00:24:19.219
You don't have to be present, right, you have to be present to Great question you only have to be present for the live auction.
00:24:19.730 --> 00:24:20.856
All of the silent auctions.

Go ahead.
00:24:31.602 --> 00:24:35.059
Well, I would love that it would be $3.99 for everyone.
00:24:35.059 --> 00:24:37.838
That's my favorite price, but that is not the price for this event.
00:24:37.838 --> 00:24:40.719
General admission is $100, just $100.
00:24:40.719 --> 00:24:43.959

00:24:45.814 --> 00:24:47.674
I believe so and it's going to a great cause.

Created as a boutique travel business, dtc has evolved into a multifaceted company known for its luxury travel experiences, adventure practices and retail success.

00:27:02.924 --> 00:27:06.460
Imani Eli, welcome to Authentically Detroit.
00:27:07.029 --> 00:27:09.977
Thank you for having me A Navy veteran.
00:27:10.017 --> 00:27:11.800
Thank you for your service.
00:27:12.102 --> 00:27:12.722
Oh, you're welcome.
00:27:12.722 --> 00:27:13.692
You're always welcome.
00:27:13.692 --> 00:27:14.675
Great experience.
00:27:15.097 --> 00:27:28.271
You know, this is very exciting to me because I'm just really starting to embrace travel for pleasure and so, not knowing a whole lot about travel, who do you cater to and how did you come about this business?
00:27:28.271 --> 00:27:33.151
Do you think there's something unique about Detroiters that we need more of this?
00:27:34.652 --> 00:27:39.897
So I wouldn't say that Detroiters need this.
00:27:39.897 --> 00:27:42.401
I would say that everyone needs this.
00:27:42.401 --> 00:27:50.221
Travel is essentially a way to remove barriers from within, a cultural aspect, excuse me.
00:27:50.221 --> 00:28:00.384
So removing those cultural barriers to different understandings or misconceptions, excuse me, that we tend to see in everyday life.
00:28:00.384 --> 00:28:02.515
So Detroiters alone don't need it?
00:28:02.515 --> 00:28:04.601
No, but everyone does need access to travel.
00:28:04.849 --> 00:28:09.321
What I meant is it feels like a lot of people don't travel as maybe as much as we should.
00:28:09.321 --> 00:28:19.580
I feel like a lot of us at least maybe just in my world don't get out as much as we should, and so this is a way or a vehicle to help get people to get those experiences.
00:28:19.580 --> 00:28:26.923
I was talking to one of our community leaders and she wanted to start something to help more people get out of the community and out of their neighborhoods and see the world.
00:28:26.923 --> 00:28:35.044
So, anyway, who are your customers and what kind of specialty places do you focus on?
00:28:35.410 --> 00:28:37.353
So my customers is everyone.
00:28:37.353 --> 00:28:44.782
I don't have a specific niche of follower audience that I reach out to outside of just my services.
00:28:44.782 --> 00:28:57.522
Our products do have a niche or a specific audience, so we reach out to everyone, but most of the time, people reach out to us from word of mouth or specific reviews and experiences that they've heard from others.
00:28:57.522 --> 00:29:19.278
I would say that if we could have a specific audience, it would be those single individuals over 30 or those same-sex couples, because I do have a lot of reoccurring customers that are same-sex and they just want to get the convenience of having something planned for them.
00:29:19.380 --> 00:29:21.030
So how do we get these people out of the house?
00:29:21.030 --> 00:29:26.935
The people that are always at work or feel like it's out of their budget, those are the people who I want to work or feel like it's out of their budget.
00:29:26.935 --> 00:29:53.819
Those are the people who I want to or I typically enlighten and tell them hey, the same money that you're spending on this video game or this hairstyle or this material item that you just felt like you needed, you can take that money and put it on a down payment and now you're able to get out the house and go somewhere.
00:29:53.819 --> 00:30:00.558
Or rather, I come across many experiences where I have to tell someone hey, you know, you don't always have to go to Vegas or Miami, there's many other places you can go still within that budget.
00:30:01.662 --> 00:30:03.792
How do I get out of Detroit if I'm scared to get on a plane?
00:30:03.792 --> 00:30:06.557
You can take a road trip down to Cincinnati.
00:30:06.557 --> 00:30:10.023
Cincinnati is beautiful, you just look at it, like Ohio.
00:30:10.023 --> 00:30:11.513
I like to show people pictures.
00:30:11.513 --> 00:30:26.785
I like to show people different accommodations and restaurants and things to do in these places, like the popular museums or the popular waterfront district or seaport district, for example, in New York.
00:30:26.785 --> 00:30:34.957
Those are the examples that I typically will throw out to potential customers or reoccurring customers to get them to go somewhere else.
00:30:35.390 --> 00:30:36.815
When did you get the travel bug?
00:30:36.815 --> 00:30:37.657
When did you catch?
00:30:37.679 --> 00:30:38.290
it, the travel bug.
00:30:38.290 --> 00:30:41.719
I felt like it was always inside of me because as a child, I was traveling.
00:30:41.719 --> 00:30:45.857
I was going to Canada, I was going to Mexico, I was going from state to state.
00:30:45.857 --> 00:30:48.750
My aunt worked for Spirit Airlines, so I was always going somewhere.
00:30:48.851 --> 00:30:49.413
Oh, you had.
00:30:49.413 --> 00:30:51.505
It Okay, companion, exactly, come on.
00:30:51.670 --> 00:30:59.259
You know, I went to the Navy, got to travel the world some more hit other countries and I had a lot of people in my family and my friend groups that were just telling me like, oh, you got money?
00:30:59.259 --> 00:31:05.711
No, I don't.
00:31:05.711 --> 00:31:09.826
I just have access because of what I do for a living, get out the military and I'm still traveling and they're trying to find out how did I get access to go to all of these places?
00:31:11.151 --> 00:31:21.555
So if you had a choice between a cruise and say vacationing in an all-encompassing resort say in South.
00:31:21.555 --> 00:31:22.116
America.
00:31:22.116 --> 00:31:23.159
What would you do?
00:31:23.159 --> 00:31:24.342
What are your thoughts?
00:31:24.342 --> 00:31:25.022
What's the difference?
00:31:25.230 --> 00:31:27.377
Me personally, I would want to go out the country.
00:31:27.377 --> 00:31:36.682
That's just because it's a new experience, new food, new people, and it's just somewhere else to touch on this planet that I have not touched already.
00:31:36.990 --> 00:31:39.233
So would you do that on a cruise, or would you do that by plane?
00:31:39.594 --> 00:31:40.556
I would do that by plane.
00:31:40.715 --> 00:31:41.017
Okay.
00:31:41.637 --> 00:31:46.085
Now, if I wanted to go multiple places at one time, I would do a cruise.
00:31:46.085 --> 00:31:58.816
And I would do a cruise just because I might not want to just do the planes and deal with the layovers and sitting still and can't walk around.
00:31:58.816 --> 00:32:05.786
On a cruise you can walk around, drink, eat, sleep, party, swim and you can go essentially from port to port, port to port and you don't have to sit in a seat the entire time.
00:32:05.786 --> 00:32:12.750
So if I wanted to go multiple places at one time and I still wanted to eat and be comfortable, I would be on a cruise, ok.
00:32:12.750 --> 00:32:15.861
But if I wanted to just go somewhere real quick, I'll hop on a plane.
00:32:16.609 --> 00:32:17.491
Talk about.
00:32:17.491 --> 00:32:25.666
Talk to that busy professional like me and Donna who travel a lot, but not really for pleasure we be.
00:32:25.666 --> 00:32:34.750
We be traveling for work, barely able to see some of the spaces and places we go to um, what you know how, what?
00:32:34.750 --> 00:32:43.075
What does that conversation look like about carving out time for this kind of pleasure, carving out time and carving out resources?
00:32:43.075 --> 00:32:45.561
Because most, most people think I think I don't have time.
00:32:45.561 --> 00:32:48.230
It's exactly what I think it's like.
00:32:48.230 --> 00:32:49.837
I don't have time for this.
00:32:50.430 --> 00:32:53.097
But I will schedule an event for work.
00:32:53.137 --> 00:32:53.699
That's right.
00:32:53.699 --> 00:32:54.821
A conference.
00:32:55.351 --> 00:33:01.329
But setting aside that time, I just feel like I'm always on the grind or thinking I need to be on the grind.
00:33:01.410 --> 00:33:08.362
So even when I'm vacationing, I'm on the grind still Right, and it's too much to think about Like I don't want to think about.
00:33:08.362 --> 00:33:13.390
Okay, because with work everything is taken care of about with the hotel, we know where we're going.
00:33:13.390 --> 00:33:17.080
Then, when you got to do it from scratch, yes, that's what I'm for.
00:33:17.349 --> 00:33:17.931
I'm for the convenience.
00:33:17.931 --> 00:33:18.832
I'm the convenience.
00:33:19.272 --> 00:33:20.714
I'm the convenience, I'm the.
00:33:20.714 --> 00:33:22.396
You don't have time to do this.
00:33:22.396 --> 00:33:23.519
I don't have time to look it up.
00:33:23.679 --> 00:33:28.305
Okay, I don't have time to go through the reviews and make sure it's the right accommodation I want.
00:33:28.305 --> 00:33:33.571
I am your convenience.
00:33:33.571 --> 00:33:34.394
The travel agent is for convenience.
00:33:34.394 --> 00:33:35.219
I am not a travel agent to make money.
00:33:35.219 --> 00:33:35.942
I'm not a travel agent to upsell.
00:33:35.942 --> 00:33:36.463
I am your convenience.
00:33:36.463 --> 00:33:38.471
So think of it like a personal assistant.
00:33:38.471 --> 00:33:41.757
I'm your personal assistant for your travel needs.
00:33:41.757 --> 00:33:56.819
If you were on a work trip and you felt like, hey, I'm on a work trip, but I got time that I could have been out walking around or seeing what the city has for me, how would you know that unless someone gave you an itinerary or gave you like a little?
00:33:58.234 --> 00:33:58.936
thing to do.
00:33:58.936 --> 00:33:59.960
That's what I need.
00:34:00.832 --> 00:34:05.076
Or I send you a link full of all the saved hot places with the reviews on Google.
00:34:05.076 --> 00:34:05.759
Maps already.
00:34:05.759 --> 00:34:09.195
Those are things that I do offer and things that I do I make it convenient.
00:34:09.195 --> 00:34:11.014
I'm going to give you an itinerary.
00:34:11.014 --> 00:34:14.192
I can provide you a list of things to do.
00:34:14.313 --> 00:34:15.376
Give me your TikTok.
00:34:15.376 --> 00:34:16.333
I'll be trying to search the TikTok.
00:34:16.333 --> 00:34:18.237
You might not even want me to book a trip for you.
00:34:18.902 --> 00:34:22.516
You might not even need me to do anything reservation worthy.
00:34:22.516 --> 00:34:23.800
You just need to know what to do.
00:34:23.800 --> 00:34:26.876
Hey, I'm about to go to Dominican Republic.
00:34:26.876 --> 00:34:28.282
I need to know what I can do while I'm here.
00:34:28.864 --> 00:34:29.405
That is what I'm for.
00:34:29.405 --> 00:34:32.818
I have some very specific travel goals this year, so I will be in touch.
00:34:32.818 --> 00:34:35.550
How do I sign up for your program?
00:34:36.092 --> 00:34:39.856
In order to sign up, just go to DetroitTravelCocom.
00:34:39.856 --> 00:34:43.621
That's DetroitTravel with two T'scom Cocom.
00:34:43.621 --> 00:34:47.146
Same thing on Facebook and Instagram DetroitTravelco.
00:34:47.146 --> 00:35:02.079
So, just whenever you feel like you don't have the time to put to the side, or you can't just say I want to do, say I want to do this, don't think about the time, don't think about man, I've got to figure this out, I've got to plan.
00:35:02.079 --> 00:35:02.802
I've got to ask people.
00:35:02.802 --> 00:35:05.869
No, just say I got to figure this out, I got a plan.
00:35:05.869 --> 00:35:06.273
I got to ask people.
00:35:06.273 --> 00:35:06.960
No, just say I want to do this and say, okay, I'm going to send it to Imani.
00:35:06.960 --> 00:35:08.114
Okay, I want to go out of town, imani.
00:35:08.114 --> 00:35:10.976
Just I'm going to give you some dates and I'm going to figure it out for you.
00:35:12.173 --> 00:35:14.952
Oh, this is so great, it's so amazing.
00:35:14.952 --> 00:35:17.275
Oh, my goodness, this sounds so amazing.
00:35:17.275 --> 00:35:25.264
Now, we are a small nonprofit organization and sometimes we have to book travel.
00:35:25.264 --> 00:35:26.606
Do you remember when we went to DC that?
00:35:26.626 --> 00:35:27.286
time.
00:35:28.291 --> 00:35:37.369
Oh my gosh, we went to DC for training and we get to DC and we drive and we pull up to this hostel okay, and we walk through this like a bar downstairs.
00:35:37.429 --> 00:35:41.081
And suffice it to say, Donna and I are not hostile people Me either.
00:35:41.471 --> 00:35:49.619
We specialize in luxury budgeted travel options and travel solutions, so we had a staff person who thought it was she didn't mean to do this, but she put a.
00:35:50.141 --> 00:35:52.460
we were like, okay, we're not doing this, we have to go somewhere else.
00:35:52.481 --> 00:35:53.048
She thought it was charming.
00:35:53.150 --> 00:35:58.302
She thought I don't even know if she even sometimes she probably I don't even know if she knew it was a hostel.
00:35:58.302 --> 00:36:01.110
She was just like this is cheap, it was, but it was.
00:36:01.110 --> 00:36:05.152
But do you work with businesses, small businesses, to help assist with?
00:36:05.213 --> 00:36:06.032
employee travel.
00:36:06.032 --> 00:36:09.175
Yes, I do business to business, product sales and services.
00:36:09.175 --> 00:36:17.659
So if you needed corporate travel, which I have done in the past for maybe two to three local companies, yes, that's very easy.
00:36:17.659 --> 00:36:23.320
Groups are better as well, because a group going to get you a better deal, it's going to get you a better accommodation price.
00:36:23.460 --> 00:36:25.561
Well, this is very good to know.
00:36:25.561 --> 00:36:29.523
Yes, because I've tried using some of the online tools.
00:36:29.523 --> 00:36:31.505
It's just, travel is really hard.
00:36:31.505 --> 00:36:39.829
Airfare, hotels it's hard, you know, even when you're just doing it for work, and then if you're doing it for fun, it gets even harder.
00:36:50.030 --> 00:36:51.695
Because then it's like how do I find out what I like to do here?
00:36:51.695 --> 00:36:52.056
So I'm excited.
00:36:52.056 --> 00:36:52.418
What is the price?
00:36:52.418 --> 00:36:53.300
Oh, so there is no price to use my services.
00:36:53.300 --> 00:36:54.324
The price is based on whatever the reservation is.
00:36:54.324 --> 00:37:09.398
But if you wanted to use my itinerary services or detailed services, which are destination event planning, which I could plan anything for you in any city, state, country, birthday, honeymoon, bridal shower, whatever it is, it can be planted to see from decorations to Cora's chef.
00:37:09.398 --> 00:37:10.360
Own down Sold.
00:37:10.360 --> 00:37:12.420
That is the only service that I pay for.
00:37:12.849 --> 00:37:17.920
That's the only service that I charge for Itinerary planning and destination event planning.
00:37:17.920 --> 00:37:25.179
Anything else I'm going to get paid based off of whatever you book, so I don't have to upsell, upcharge or charge a fee.
00:37:25.269 --> 00:37:26.876
So this is us working with.
00:37:26.876 --> 00:37:28.556
You Might need to ball on a budget, right.
00:37:28.690 --> 00:37:31.018
Yes, that's exactly what it is Balling on a budget.
00:37:31.018 --> 00:37:34.097
I say it all the time I need to book a flight to Newark.
00:37:34.170 --> 00:37:35.195
So we're going to talk after this.
00:37:35.195 --> 00:37:38.960
Listen, let the people know once again how they can get in contact with you.
00:37:45.510 --> 00:37:48.817
And social media handles, because a lot of people like to search.
00:37:48.817 --> 00:37:59.378
You can follow us on instagram and facebook at detroit travelco that's with two t's, as well as wwwdetroittravelcocom, that's detroit travel with two t's okay, before we let you go, though, I have some questions.
00:38:00.762 --> 00:38:02.789
Best place you've ever visited.
00:38:03.800 --> 00:38:05.728
Best country I've ever been to is Dubai.
00:38:05.728 --> 00:38:09.983
I've been five times, and every time you go back you get better, because there's always something new.
00:38:09.983 --> 00:38:23.184
Somebody else is there, someone special, some movie is being filmed, and our money, the US dollar, is more to Durham's, so you're going to always have a good time and get your money's worth and you can ball out because there's work more you can ball on a budget in Dubai.
00:38:23.184 --> 00:38:24.987
You definitely can do that, all right.
00:38:25.547 --> 00:38:26.188
Any other places?
00:38:26.188 --> 00:38:26.989
What about Japan?
00:38:26.989 --> 00:38:27.690
Do you like Japan?
00:38:27.710 --> 00:38:30.775
I have never been to Japan, but I planned three trips to Japan.
00:38:33.021 --> 00:38:34.231
They've all stayed at least two weeks.
00:38:34.231 --> 00:38:37.222
I think I want to go to the Disney in Tokyo, Tokyo.
00:38:37.322 --> 00:38:37.764
Osaka.
00:38:37.764 --> 00:38:39.668
You know, they bounce around from city to city.
00:38:39.769 --> 00:38:40.831
Okay, what about Africa?
00:38:47.599 --> 00:38:48.923
What countries have you booked for in africa?
00:38:48.923 --> 00:38:49.867
Morocco, it's morocco, somebody else.
00:38:49.867 --> 00:38:50.750
I almost did egypt, but it didn't go through.
00:38:50.750 --> 00:38:53.840
Um, I personally had my own personal reviews of egypt.
00:38:53.840 --> 00:38:56.327
Um, I didn't like egypt.
00:38:56.327 --> 00:38:57.469
Egypt it's not.
00:38:57.469 --> 00:38:59.958
It's what you see is culturally.
00:38:59.958 --> 00:39:05.590
You don't get the cultural aspect of oh it's not the traditions and the the history.
00:39:05.590 --> 00:39:15.175
When you go to the tombs and things like that, it's very city, surrounded surrounding all of the pyramids and the tombs, and it's very crowded.
00:39:15.380 --> 00:39:21.052
Yeah, I want to go to Ethiopia and I want to go to those churches that are underground in the caves.
00:39:21.052 --> 00:39:23.204
I am so fascinated by that.
00:39:23.344 --> 00:39:24.969
That would be beautiful, yes.
00:39:25.050 --> 00:39:29.407
So I just don't want to go in the middle of a civil war, so it's like timing right.
00:39:29.407 --> 00:39:51.800
But I've, really I've read this book by Tanana Rebdu and it was this Living Blood series and it took place part of it was in Ethiopia and I was so fascinated to learn about these ancient parts of you know, in this ancient place in Ethiopia where the Catholic religion or the Christianity was really foundational to this area, and we don't learn about that in school.
00:39:51.800 --> 00:39:54.327
They have their own calendar.
00:39:54.327 --> 00:40:02.326
Religion they have their own, essentially civilization, and a lot of people don't talk about it.
00:40:02.326 --> 00:40:05.599
I'm not sure if you know about their calendar, their calendar is completely different.
00:40:05.659 --> 00:40:08.760
Yodit Mesfin Johnson, our good friend, our good friend.
00:40:08.860 --> 00:40:14.019
So these are the things that you learn or you're exposed to when you remove those cultural barriers.
00:40:14.179 --> 00:40:19.306
Yeah, so I really, really hope to have a conversation with you about that and other travel.
00:40:19.306 --> 00:40:22.909
This is really exciting to have somebody in our community do this.
00:40:22.909 --> 00:40:25.092
You know, back in the day people From the east side.
00:40:25.092 --> 00:40:26.414
From the east side at that.
00:40:26.414 --> 00:40:27.775
Are you still an east sider?
00:40:28.320 --> 00:40:34.686
Well kind of Just say yes, Okay yes, well, that's still east Upper east borderline.
00:40:35.688 --> 00:40:36.190
You know what?
00:40:36.190 --> 00:40:39.523
Harper Woods is sort of like Southfield now or Oak Park.
00:40:39.523 --> 00:40:41.242
Okay, it's just like Detroit.
00:40:41.344 --> 00:40:49.030
Northeast Detroit Got your own mayor got your own little city council schools, but it's still us over there right.
00:40:49.030 --> 00:40:51.432
All right, imani, it was a pleasure having you on.
00:40:51.452 --> 00:40:53.744
Thank you so much, and I thank you all for giving me the opportunity.
00:40:54.005 --> 00:40:54.869
No, it's our pleasure.
00:40:54.869 --> 00:41:06.485
If you have topics that you want discussed on Authentically Detroit, you can hit us up on our socials at Authentically Detroit on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or you can email us at authenticallydetroit at gmailcom.
00:41:06.485 --> 00:41:09.447
All right, it is time for shout-outs.
00:41:09.447 --> 00:41:11.128
Imani, you have any shout-outs?
00:41:11.347 --> 00:41:14.070
Yeah, I want to shout-out myself Come on.
00:41:14.070 --> 00:41:15.150
I'm a woman.
00:41:15.150 --> 00:41:16.751
It's March, it's our month.
00:41:17.751 --> 00:41:18.132
Yes.
00:41:18.472 --> 00:41:21.114
And I just see great potential in my business.
00:41:21.114 --> 00:41:24.175
So I want to give myself a shout out for keep going and not quitting.
00:41:24.255 --> 00:41:25.735
I think you got two new customers right here.
00:41:25.755 --> 00:41:26.976
Yes, you do Good thing.
00:41:27.036 --> 00:41:28.677
I'm sure a couple more are listening today.
00:41:28.677 --> 00:41:29.378
I hope so.
00:41:31.239 --> 00:41:33.625
Donna you have any shout out.
00:41:33.625 --> 00:41:35.768
You know I really do want to shout out.
00:41:35.768 --> 00:41:36.389
Luther Keith.
00:41:36.389 --> 00:41:37.833
Yeah, I want to shout him out.
00:41:37.833 --> 00:41:42.934
I was thinking about it and just about the fact that he was a giant among us.
00:41:42.934 --> 00:41:50.358
When you look at the amount of impact this man had on our community, it was tremendous in so many different ways.
00:41:50.358 --> 00:41:58.190
I think it's important to honor people who were the first, but not the last, who got there first and opened the door so others could follow behind them.
00:41:59.822 --> 00:42:13.275
And then, he turned his attention to trying to pull out leadership of revitalized leaders across the city of Detroit and get people excited about being here and investing and proud of our community.
00:42:13.275 --> 00:42:16.951
So what a living legend that we just lost.
00:42:16.951 --> 00:42:19.260
And then you know then to be a blues man Right.
00:42:19.260 --> 00:43:02.585
So he was embracing all parts of himself the arts part of himself, the professional side, the philanthropic side just a really great human being, and I think that those of us who follow in his wake should take a look and see the example that he left, because we never know when I will say this and this is not going to sound right I'm glad that he was doing something he loved and doing it well on his last day on earth and I pray that on mine I'm doing something that I love as well, that you want to do something you love and live a life of purpose and meaning and joy and accomplishment all the way until the end, and he did that.
00:43:03.827 --> 00:43:14.253
I want to shout out and remember Luther Keith as well, but also Angie Stone, Roy Ayers, Dwayne Wiggins.
00:43:14.253 --> 00:43:19.411
I mean, it's been a tough couple of weeks.
00:43:19.411 --> 00:43:21.887
On Friday we were in the office.
00:43:21.887 --> 00:43:27.001
There was only a couple of us in the office on Friday, so we had a Tony, Tony, Tony playlist going on and it was.
00:43:27.001 --> 00:43:29.811
You know, it was bittersweet.
00:43:30.380 --> 00:43:35.112
I'd like to shout out the amazing staff at Outlier Media.
00:43:35.112 --> 00:43:38.728
One of my staffers came to me in November and said hey, Orlando, I have this idea.
00:43:38.728 --> 00:43:39.632
I want to do an event.
00:43:39.632 --> 00:44:08.572
Alex Alsup has given us this list of about 27 households who lost their homes to property tax foreclosure between 2015 and 2020, whereby the county sold their homes for a profit and the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that that's illegal and that you actually owe those former property owners the profit, the difference, so the average amount owed is around $8,000.
00:44:08.572 --> 00:44:20.442
Okay, he said I just want to do an event where we call people, we look people up, we call them and we try to let them know that this is available to them and we will help them through this process with the county.
00:44:20.442 --> 00:44:30.090
And I said to him I said this is not a one event kind of thing, and so I wrote up a whole proposal and we built a program.
00:44:30.090 --> 00:44:32.527
This is this is my training from Donna Gives Davidson.
00:44:32.527 --> 00:44:33.530
It's like let's blow it up.
00:44:34.121 --> 00:44:54.931
We blew it up, we built a program within a span of weeks and we've been having these really amazing call-a-thons where volunteers come and they receive a small stipend to get through this list of trying to contact people by phone, by social media, to let them know about the money that is owed to them.
00:44:54.931 --> 00:45:19.641
We had a call-a-thon last week and one of the things that really touched me and I was actually able to be there is that that night we were able to make contact with people, that after the end of the night we were able to make contact with people and get them started on the process, where a total of about 500,000 will be recouped if they went through the entire process, which we are funded to help them do.
00:45:19.641 --> 00:45:27.173
But so far we've already have helped residents get back 1.3 million dollars.
00:45:27.173 --> 00:45:30.659
Wow, 1.3 million.
00:45:30.659 --> 00:45:33.465
Right, they've submitted it's, it's, it's.
00:45:33.465 --> 00:45:50.699
Come and so shout out to the amazing team at outlier who goes through these lists, create the call sheet, the script, train the volunteers, we feed them and people are just in there calling.
00:45:51.842 --> 00:45:59.614
I talked to an elderly person who was owed $33,000 in profits in profits.
00:45:59.614 --> 00:46:02.268
And no, this is not replace a home.
00:46:02.268 --> 00:46:08.923
You lost your home but we're talking about money that can still make a material difference in the lives of Detroiters.
00:46:08.923 --> 00:46:16.248
And so I am right at home at Outlier being able to build a program that quickly and erect it.
00:46:16.248 --> 00:46:17.429
And why should it be?
00:46:17.429 --> 00:46:35.653
You all, as a news organization, I said do y'all question Fox 2, Hall of Shame and Hank to the Rescue and all of the other television service journalists?
00:46:35.653 --> 00:46:40.148
This is a service journalism project and so I can't rave enough about it.
00:46:40.148 --> 00:46:42.561
We're going to continue to do the work.
00:46:42.561 --> 00:46:51.675
Shout out to Kobe and Shiva and Leah and Erica and everybody at Outlier who, Ashley, who is a part of this.
00:46:51.940 --> 00:46:58.780
I mean, outlier already has, as part of its mission, educating people about homes and connecting people to resources.
00:46:58.780 --> 00:47:02.110
This is just taking it and supersizing that mission.
00:47:02.110 --> 00:47:04.126
Congratulations to you as a leader.
00:47:04.126 --> 00:47:07.306
This is your first really big thing since you've been at Outlier right.
00:47:07.387 --> 00:47:09.291
Yeah, yeah, I'm proud of it.
00:47:09.291 --> 00:47:13.809
All right, y'all, we want to thank you so much for listening and rocking with Authentically Detroit.
00:47:13.809 --> 00:47:14.731
We'll see you next time.
00:47:14.731 --> 00:47:15.519
Love on your neighbor.
00:47:15.519 --> 00:47:17.099
Outro Music.
