In this enlightening episode of @work style, host Don Carter explores the common communication breakdowns that occur in workplace interactions. Drawing from his extensive HR experience and expertise in DiSC profiles, Don breaks down how our different communication preferences (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness) create friction when misunderstood.
Through relatable workplace scenarios and practical examples, Don illustrates three common clash patterns: "Get to the Point vs. Tell Me the Full Story," "Quick Decision vs. Thoughtful Analysis," and "People Focus vs. Task Focus." Listeners will gain valuable insights into recognizing these communication mismatches and learn specific adaptation strategies for each DiSC style.
The episode includes a compelling case study showing how a dysfunctional product team transformed their effectiveness by understanding and adapting to each other's communication styles. Don concludes with four immediately applicable tips to improve workplace communication, emphasizing that effective communication isn't about speaking the same language—it's about translating between different ones.
Whether you're struggling with a difficult colleague, managing a diverse team, or simply want to improve your workplace relationships, this episode provides the framework to recognize and bridge communication gaps for better collaboration.
