Speaker 1: The Twins split the first two games in Houston after a brilliant start on Monday from Zebi Matthews and maybe the most consequential challenge in the brief, wondrous history of the ABS system on Tuesday, leading to a big hit for the Astros and a win plus more injury woes for a team that really can't afford them. This is Twin Cities Territory, your Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network. I am Zach Pierce of the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Dufe, longtime Major leaguer and former Minnesota Twins pitcher. Guys, we will start with the more recent game, which was Tuesday night's loss. Twins are now forty one forty six after going one to one of these first two games. As I mentioned, but Tuesday might have been a win as well, if not for one of the more I guess poster child reasons for having the ABS system in the first place. The Twins were up three to nothing after the first inning, Joe Ryan on the mound feeling good, and then in the bottom of the fourth Astros got a little rally going and with the bases loaded and two outs down three to one, jose L two Vey worked to full count. Joe Ryan thought he struck him out, got the call. Everybody was walking off the field. Al two ve correctly challenged it onlike Monday night when we saw a player take too long and looking into the dugout first and be denied a challenge for the Astros. Al two Bay got the challenge. Pitch was called a ball by point six inches, and then as everybody probably saw coming Roy down, Olivarez comes up and hits a grand slam off Joe Ryan. It was the last runs of the game the Astros scored, but it was enough for a six four win, and Joe Ryan continues to have struggles against the Astros.

Speaker 2: Dan, Yeah, and it's funny like he was early on pitching great three scoreless sinnings, but they were making him work and the foulon pitches off, and you know that just kept going and that's what been them of The Astros can see his back ball more than any other teams. I think he came in with a five to ninety one career era against the Astros. I mean this is a guy that we saw be reduced to a two inning guy in the twenty twenty three playoffs because the Astro success against him. So it's always been there and it just kind of matriculated last night the uh the weird play the ball that gets hit by roy Slewis and it looked like it had some weird spin on it, because I think I thought that initially was an error based off of the fact that Royce has kind of dropped a pop up at the railing earlier in the inning, and it just looked like it was a weird inning for him. But seeing the seeing the replay, the ball checked up and it was a strange play. But that kind of got the inning going, where you know, three ground balls to get through and all of a sudden it's a three to one game. It was weird. The al Tuove challenge ended up being huge. Joe Ryan was about three feet from the top step of the dugout. He he hit the glove perfect exactly as Karattini had set up and was convinced it was a strike. He you know, was right on the outside edge. It was a great pitch. It was a great take by Jose Altuve and alto be signal right away, and you see Joe Ryan walking off, you see Kartini walking off, and the reversal was was a monster, Like you mentioned, Zach, and like here we are eighty seven games in and I don't know if there's been one overturn that's been that consequential. But afterwards, Joe Ryan actually was kind of ruined the fact that he hadn't challenged the previous He wanted Victor Kartini to challenge against Delgado the ninth. So Joe Ryan walked to in a row and that was really his downfall right there. He walked to ninth hitter, his three to two to Delgado hit the corner upper upper outside corner, and he had a pitch chart afterwards, he said after the game he thought about tapping, but they really don't. The Twins don't let their pitchers tap. It's not they don't let them. They discouraged them because the catchers are.

So like unless you're watching it the whole way, it is so hard. Like there's times when Garber I can remember doing, or Castro would like squeeze one on the inside corner and I'd be like pissed, And then after game it's like two balls inside. I'm like, Okay, that's my bad.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and and so like that, you know, Joe wanted to challenge. Maybe in that instance with al Twove coming up, KROTENI should have challenged. That seemed like a moment where yeah, but obviously this is a guy that has the view and and has proven to be pretty damn good at knowing when to call balls and strikes. But you know, those two walks really set up the whole inning because then it forced most of the inning the Astros were hitting pitches that were off the plate. Joe Ryan was trying to get was trying to be aggressive get chases, and he came in to Jordan Alvarez and it was you know, in the inside middle spot and yeah, Alvarez did what he does man ninety five, a sinker ninety five and it went out one oh six, and he hit it to the hardest part of the park, to Homer, to other than dead center, and you know, the Twins were worried about facing Alvarez in a big spot. I wonder why this guy's killed him for years. You know, hid the home run off Jacks last year early in the season. He's homered off them so many times. It's look, he's one of the best hitters in the planet, and he showed it again. So it was a tough losses very uncharacteristic from job.

There it's a great, mound like there's nothing obscure about, it like other than The crawford boxes that are like kind of right, there but like you don't really see a ton of like the balls that get hit, there like just mistake pitches. Whatever so it's not like you're getting chip beat bad. Whatever it's just sometimes guys just have your. Number and and to that, point hitters get comfortable knowing that they have good, History like so you could be as confident as you, want but if they're comfy in the box and you're not changing, that there's nothing that's going to. Change and to that, POINT i Think chelty Mentioned dan also just mentioned like they knew Yord on before the, series like that was the guy to circle and make sure nobody's on when he's. Up and he came up his first at, BAT i think he hit a ball one, Fifteen like he's just he's on AN mvp pace right, now like he's he's doing incredible things at the, plate and he's the last guy you wanted up in that spot and it, happened and LIKE i my wife actually even said she like last, year like that challenge can't. Happen like it's crazy how fast that simple rule change is now changing the game like it was something it wasn't even a thought ten years, ago you, know and then just now every. Thinking i'm, like Imagine Greg maddox having to challenge pitches and being wrong every time.

Rate he's just been so efficient and his cutter was sharp that night and paired it with the, fastball and you, know he just went to town and just cruised through a very tough As stars came into the series fourth and baseball on home runs and you, know they hit one Off. Zebby was It jordon? Who home of Cam? Smith the first of like two rim rocking home runs hit By kim Cam smith that. Gomez adams gave up the two run. Earlier BUT i, mean like ze aside from that, Moment zebby was so good and really kept them in. Check and that was a much needed effort because earlier in the day they found out By Anthony. Bondo we'll talk about that a little bit, later but they found. Out Anthony bonda is out not for weeks but months with the, injury And buxton was out AND i was getting AN mri on his hip and that turned into a hip, impingement which they think is the best case. Scenario BUT i, mean it was big day when you lose two really critical guys to your, clubhouse and Between zebi showing up and just throwing a, gem and that's three in a row for him where he's been so. GOOD i, mean he gave up two solos to The dodgers and lost two to one in that, game but pitch great there and the time before, that pitched seven. Innings he delivered they needed. It the offense delivered that night and hit three home runs and gave them a four to. One you, know Gave zebby plenty of room to work with to survive that scare in the in the ninth another ninth inning. Scare with all within the last four, days it's felt, like, man this bullpen's been on the run and just getting. By you, Know Travis adams was one batter away from getting out of that inning and and getting giving them two innings to close it out and have an easy. Win and it spiraled on him real. Quick the challenge that you, Referenced Christian walker took called strike. Three there was a man on First walker took a step towards first base and you, know. Taps here's the, call turns and, taps and you, know it's clear he thought it was ball. Four but the ump, said, no you look in the direction of the, dugout and that's the. No, no that's the, rule which, that by the letter of the, law is the. Rule BUT i actually was over in The astros clubhouse yesterday and had a quick chance to talk To Christian walker about, it AND i was, like here's the one THING i would do IF i was. Players is very clear from his intent his. Stride he's taking off his elbow. Guard he is walking to first base believing it was called strike. Three that all takes aboutzero point five seconds to do. That he is then alarmed to strike three and turns back to look at the umpire and taps. Immediately all that happened within the three. Seconds the dugout is also like.

In Derek shelton after the game, said you, know this is what they what the umpires, said and so you, KNOW i get it because that's the. Rule but from his vantage, point you, Know shelton's looking into that dugout and he didn't see. Anything he, SAID i didn't see anything go on over. There it was so, instant and that really saved The twins because that inning quickly fell. Apart you, Know adams gives up a two run and in the next batter hit a two run. HOMER i cannot remember for the life of me who that home that home run. Was but it was all of a, sudden it's five. Three If walker's, on it's five to. Four yoenderstimez came, in gave up a solo to Cam smith and it would have been five to. Five instead it was five to. Four he had breathing room and got the next out and The twins. Won So taylor raul, Run, yeah thank, you thank. You that was a nice shot down the right field. Line and you, know The twins were that close from getting through with a five to one, win and they were that close from blowing a five to one. Lead it was a very thin margin in the ninth and In, monday but you, Know zebby did enough And Royce, Lewis Josh, bell And victor carrotin all. Homeward so that was a great win on a on a day that needed.

In so it wouldn't shock me if we saw him On thursday Or, friday That angel series and they reinsert him if he stays, healthy, obviously but that would be a big boost because at some point you got to think about trim and Back connor prelypse, innings which sucks because he's been pitching so well and he responded great to that that, rest the extra rest the other, day but at some point he's got hit one hundred and twenty innings and you just can't a two Time Tommy john. Guy you don't want to push him in and you, know test. It you want him for the long term, future and so keeping you, know Getting bailey back would would definitely help alleviate That paratus has definitely done a good. Upsetting you could tell because they lost sort of a guy they believe is one of their. Leaders you could they came around and almost did it like a protective circle during the media session because you could tell he didn't want to, talk like he signaled immediately On. Sunday knew something was wrong and he was one hundred percent correct about that because it's a tear in his lat And Derek shelton, said it's not, weeks it's. Months and that's a big blow to this team because he And morris And Andrew morris And Eandris gomez had really started to settle in and show The twins they could close out winnable, games and now they got to figure out how to get that third guy again and who it's going to.

Speaker 1: The Twins split the first two games in Houston after a brilliant start on Monday from Zebi Matthews and maybe the most consequential challenge in the brief, wondrous history of the ABS system on Tuesday, leading to a big hit for the Astros and a win plus more injury woes for a team that really can't afford them. This is Twin Cities Territory, your Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network. I am Zach Pierce of the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Dufe, longtime Major leaguer and former Minnesota Twins pitcher. Guys, we will start with the more recent game, which was Tuesday night's loss. Twins are now forty one forty six after going one to one of these first two games. As I mentioned, but Tuesday might have been a win as well, if not for one of the more I guess poster child reasons for having the ABS system in the first place. The Twins were up three to nothing after the first inning, Joe Ryan on the mound feeling good, and then in the bottom of the fourth Astros got a little rally going and with the bases loaded and two outs down three to one, jose L two Vey worked to full count. Joe Ryan thought he struck him out, got the call. Everybody was walking off the field. Al two ve correctly challenged it onlike Monday night when we saw a player take too long and looking into the dugout first and be denied a challenge for the Astros. Al two Bay got the challenge. Pitch was called a ball by point six inches, and then as everybody probably saw coming Roy down, Olivarez comes up and hits a grand slam off Joe Ryan. It was the last runs of the game the Astros scored, but it was enough for a six four win, and Joe Ryan continues to have struggles against the Astros.

Speaker 2: Dan, Yeah, and it's funny like he was early on pitching great three scoreless sinnings, but they were making him work and the foulon pitches off, and you know that just kept going and that's what been them of The Astros can see his back ball more than any other teams. I think he came in with a five to ninety one career era against the Astros. I mean this is a guy that we saw be reduced to a two inning guy in the twenty twenty three playoffs because the Astro success against him. So it's always been there and it just kind of matriculated last night the uh the weird play the ball that gets hit by roy Slewis and it looked like it had some weird spin on it, because I think I thought that initially was an error based off of the fact that Royce has kind of dropped a pop up at the railing earlier in the inning, and it just looked like it was a weird inning for him. But seeing the seeing the replay, the ball checked up and it was a strange play. But that kind of got the inning going, where you know, three ground balls to get through and all of a sudden it's a three to one game. It was weird. The al Tuove challenge ended up being huge. Joe Ryan was about three feet from the top step of the dugout. He he hit the glove perfect exactly as Karattini had set up and was convinced it was a strike. He you know, was right on the outside edge. It was a great pitch. It was a great take by Jose Altuve and alto be signal right away, and you see Joe Ryan walking off, you see Kartini walking off, and the reversal was was a monster, Like you mentioned, Zach, and like here we are eighty seven games in and I don't know if there's been one overturn that's been that consequential. But afterwards, Joe Ryan actually was kind of ruined the fact that he hadn't challenged the previous He wanted Victor Kartini to challenge against Delgado the ninth. So Joe Ryan walked to in a row and that was really his downfall right there. He walked to ninth hitter, his three to two to Delgado hit the corner upper upper outside corner, and he had a pitch chart afterwards, he said after the game he thought about tapping, but they really don't. The Twins don't let their pitchers tap. It's not they don't let them. They discouraged them because the catchers are.

That seemed like a moment where yeah, but obviously this is a guy that has the view and and has proven to be pretty damn good at knowing when to call balls and strikes. But you know, those two walks really set up the whole inning because then it forced most of the inning the Astros were hitting pitches that were off the plate. Joe Ryan was trying to get was trying to be aggressive get chases, and he came in to Jordan Alvarez and it was you know, in the inside middle spot and yeah, Alvarez did what he does man ninety five, a sinker ninety five and it went out one oh six, and he hit it to the hardest part of the park, to Homer, to other than dead center, and you know, the Twins were worried about facing Alvarez in a big spot. I wonder why this guy's killed him for years. You know, hid the home run off Jacks last year early in the season. He's homered off them so many times. It's look, he's one of the best hitters in the planet, and he showed it again. So it was a tough losses very uncharacteristic from job.

Number and and to that, point hitters get comfortable knowing that they have good, History like so you could be as confident as you, want but if they're comfy in the box and you're not changing, that there's nothing that's going to. Change and to that, POINT i Think chelty Mentioned dan also just mentioned like they knew Yord on before the, series like that was the guy to circle and make sure nobody's on when he's. Up and he came up his first at, BAT i think he hit a ball one, Fifteen like he's just he's on AN mvp pace right, now like he's he's doing incredible things at the, plate and he's the last guy you wanted up in that spot and it, happened and LIKE i my wife actually even said she like last, year like that challenge can't. Happen like it's crazy how fast that simple rule change is now changing the game like it was something it wasn't even a thought ten years, ago you, know and then just now every. Scenario BUT i, mean it was big day when you lose two really critical guys to your, clubhouse and Between zebi showing up and just throwing a, gem and that's three in a row for him where he's been so. GOOD i, mean he gave up two solos to The dodgers and lost two to one in that, game but pitch great there and the time before, that pitched seven. Innings he delivered they needed. It the offense delivered that night and hit three home runs and gave them a four to. One you, know Gave zebby plenty of room to work with to survive that scare in the in the ninth another ninth inning. Scare with all within the last four, days it's felt, like, man this bullpen's been on the run and just getting. By you, Know Travis adams was one batter away from getting out of that inning and and getting giving them two innings to close it out and have an easy. Win and it spiraled on him real. Quick the challenge that you, Referenced Christian walker took called strike. Three there was a man on First walker took a step towards first base and you, know. Taps here's the, call turns and, taps and you, know it's clear he thought it was ball. Four but the ump, said, no you look in the direction of the, dugout and that's the. No, no that's the, rule which, that by the letter of the, law is the. Rule BUT i actually was over in The astros clubhouse yesterday and had a quick chance to talk To Christian walker about, it AND i was, like here's the one THING i would do IF i was. Line and you, know The twins were that close from getting through with a five to one, win and they were that close from blowing a five to one.
