TIETOJA TÄSTÄ JAKSOSTA
What transformed Uttam Kumar from a successful actor into an irreplaceable phenomenon?
Was it his effortless naturalism, his understanding of the camera, the courage with which he allowed Satyajit Ray to dismantle his superstar image in Nayak—or the extraordinary relationship he created with generations of viewers?
In Part 2 of this special birth-centenary conversation, Aloka Banerjee Syam speaks with Dr. Sayandeb Chowdhury, film scholar and author of Uttam Kumar: A Life in Cinema, about the craft, courage and humanity behind Bengal’s Mahanayak.
This conversation explores:
• Why Uttam Kumar’s spontaneity was built on relentless practice
• How he used marbles, mirrors and movement to train himself
• Why his acting remains surprisingly modern and undated
• Why Satyajit Ray asked him to perform without makeup in Nayak
• How Nayak exposed the man behind the superstar
• The generosity that made him a guardian of studio technicians
• The burden of carrying an entire film industry
• Why Chhoti Si Mulaqat failed—and whether Bollywood really worked against him
• Why he never received a Padma Shri
• Why no proper Doordarshan interview with him survives
• Why an Uttam Kumar biopic may never capture the real man
• How his cult continues to grow among younger audiences
This is not simply a tribute to a beloved superstar. It is an investigation into how Uttam Kumar mastered the camera, carried an industry and became part of Bengal’s emotional and cultural memory.
